CHAPTER 8 - MISTLETOE CAY BY DAYLIGHT
At the last minute, the plans changed because Arlo needed Scott's help, so Julie drove. As Julie navigated the familiar streets of Mistletoe Cay, she began talking about the program and practice. Once done, she switched to talking about the town itself. "You know, Mistletoe Cay is fairly small, which is why we only have three schools here. The town has a lot of retirees, which shapes our community."
Julie continued as they rolled past the picturesque homes, "Our elementary school caters to the little ones from Pre-K to Sixth grade. Then there's the Junior High School for grades seven through nine, and finally, the high school." She glanced at Elizabeth, gauging her interest.
"That's for the whole town?" Elizabeth asked, her brow furrowed in thought.
"For now, yes," Julie confirmed, nodding. "But I've heard chatter about starting to include some students from the outskirts of Tidewater Cove over the next couple of years. Currently, our combined student population across the three schools is just over a thousand."
"Wow, I didn't realize it was that small," Elizabeth's curiosity piqued.
Julie pointed casually as they drove by. "See that over there? That's Kookaburra Cove Elementary, where Lili and Allie go." Elizabeth turned to look out the window and was surprised to see that the building was much larger than she'd imagined, a bright and welcoming structure that seemed to buzz with the energy of youth.
Soon, they approached their destination. Julie steered into a spacious parking lot where two distinct buildings sat side by side. Despite sharing space, they had separate driveways and a wide median dividing them. Elizabeth's gaze shifted between the signs: Wombat Creek Junior High to the left, a modern building with large windows offering glimpses of bustling hallways, and Thylacine Hills High School to the right, where their practice was set to take place. She felt a thrill of anticipation as they pulled into a parking spot directly in front of what appeared to be an expansive auditorium.
"Looks like Colleen and Emma are already here," Julie said, a hint of excitement in her voice. "I can't wait for you to meet Emma. She's the music director at the high school, but she and Colleen work closely together on most projects."
As they stepped out of the car, laughter and chatter enveloped them. Parents lounged around the entrance, engaged in warm conversations, while children clustered in groups, animatedly preparing for their rehearsal. Elizabeth felt a wave of eagerness as she stepped into the lively atmosphere, ready to dive into the music that awaited them.
Colleen spotted them across the bustling room, her smile instantly brightening as she made her way through the crowd. "Elizabeth, it's so lovely to see you looking so well-rested," she teased, her eyes sparkling with warmth.
"Thanks, Colleen. I do feel much better now that I've had a decent amount of sleep."
Colleen leaned in slightly, her voice playful. "Let's hope there are no more wildlife encounters on your horizon, right?"
Elizabeth's face turned a light shade of pink as she recalled her last adventure. "If there were any last night, I must admit, I was blissfully ignorant of them!" she laughed, amused at the memory.
As their laughter faded, a lovely brunette approached them. She appeared slightly older than Elizabeth, perhaps around 32, with an air of confidence that immediately captured their attention. Colleen's face lit up as she turned to greet her. "Emma, come over! I'd like you to meet Julie's sister, Elizabeth Thatcher."
"It's very nice to meet you, Elizabeth," Emma said warmly, her voice melodic and inviting. "Are you ready for your debut performance?"
Elizabeth chuckled softly, feeling a twinge of nervous excitement. "I believe so! I've practiced it many times with my friend pretending to be Julie. I really appreciate you letting us take part in this."
"Think nothing of it," Emma replied with a smile, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Love Actually is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I adore Agatha's character. The kids are eager to meet you, too. Would you like to come and meet them now?"
"I would love to!" Elizabeth responded enthusiastically, allowing Emma to gently pull her away towards the group of young students. As they walked away, Julie seized the moment to share with Colleen all about Captain Fire Hazard, her voice animated with excitement as she launched into the details.
Colleen's eyes sparkled with delight and mischief as Julie recounted her story. "So, Captain Fire Hazard, huh?" she teased, a playful grin spreading across her face.
"Yes! You should have seen Elizabeth's expression when she saw the calendar. I swear, drool was practically dripping from her mouth," Julie replied, giggling as she shared the amusing moment, inadvertently drawing Elizabeth's attention for a fleeting moment.
Colleen leaned in closer, her excitement palpable. "That sounds incredibly promising! I'd say we're off to a fantastic start," she remarked, her voice brimming with enthusiasm. Her gaze drifted towards Nathan, who had been observing the group. "I couldn't help but notice Nathan's eyes straying to Elizabeth. Did you catch how he seemed perturbed when Mark carried her to the car?"
Julie nodded, processing the observation. "I did notice that. Has Nathan brought up anything about Elizabeth?" she asked curiously.
Colleen shrugged slightly, a thoughtful expression crossing her face. "Not yet, unfortunately. But maybe now, with this new nickname for him, I can slip it into conversation and see if it opens the door for a dialogue later."
Their conversation was interrupted by Elizabeth, who approached them while speaking animatedly into her phone. "Hey, Julie! Just a heads up—Mark can't make it for lunch because he got called out on an investigation," she explained, a hint of disappointment in her voice. "But he did mention that he wants me to be his plus one at his work holiday party tomorrow night." Elizabeth laughed, her eyes twinkling with amusement as she added, "He just found out he'd be the only one without a date!"
Julie's face lit up with excitement. "Oh, that's perfect! I don't have any plans since Scott works from tomorrow at 3 pm until Monday morning."
"That's awesome! Easton and I will be there too, so we can hang out together," Colleen chimed in, her smile beaming with anticipation.
As Elizabeth continued chatting with Mark on the phone, her expression shifted between joy and mild concern. After a few more minutes of animated conversation, she finally disconnected the call. Over her head, Julie and Colleen exchanged knowing smirks, already concocting plans to snap pictures of Elizabeth all dressed up for the party.
Before long, the atmosphere shifted from matchmaking schemes to the Christmas program, and rehearsal began.
A few hours later, Julie and Elizabeth made their way into town, excited for a leisurely lunch and a tour of the local sights. Julie pulled into the community parking lot near the Surf's Up Café.
"It's still a bit early for lunch," Julie suggested, glancing at the sun just beginning its descent in the afternoon sky. "Why don't we start with a refreshing drink here, and then we can embark on our tour? Tonight, after the program, you'll see the town all lit up; it's truly a sight to behold."
They stepped into the café, the warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods wrapping around them like a comforting blanket. Immediately, they were greeted by an older woman with a beaming smile who approached them with open arms. "Abigail! I was hoping you would be in today!" Julie exclaimed as she embraced the woman. "I want you to meet my sister, Elizabeth."
"Hello, Elizabeth," Abigail said warmly, her eyes sparkling with a welcoming light. "I'm Abigail Avery. It feels like I already know you since your family has talked of nothing but your visit for the past few months. I've been looking forward to meeting you!"
Elizabeth laughed softly, her cheeks flushing slightly with shyness. "I keep hearing that, and I just hope I meet everyone's expectations."
"I have no doubt you will, my girl," Abigail replied with encouragement, her gentle tone wrapping Elizabeth in a sense of ease.
Julie chimed in, "Bill is the Fire Chief of Mistletoe Cay and oversees Scott and Captain Fire Hazard's station."
"JULIE!" Elizabeth gasped, her face turning a vibrant shade of red as embarrassment washed over her.
Abigail chuckled heartily, her laughter ringing like wind chimes in the soft breeze. "Don't be embarrassed, dear. I take it she's referring to Nathan?"
Elizabeth nodded, still feeling the heat of embarrassment. "Yes, my friend Rosemary was the one who named him that because of the calendar," she explained. However, she didn't delve into the details—partly because it only skimmed the surface of the truth and also to avoid further humiliation. Thankfully, Julie chose not to comment further on it.
Abigail continued, wiping her hands on her apron. "This year's calendar is certainly generating a lot of buzz and sales. Bill is strutting around like a proud papa, glowing with pride over it all," she said, laughing again. "Now, what can I get you two?"
Julie, eager to introduce Elizabeth to some local flavors, responded, "How about a couple of flat whites to go? Abigail makes the best flat white I've ever had."
"Coming right up!" Abigail said cheerily, bustling away to prepare their drinks with the expertise of someone who took great pride in her craft.
Curiously, Elizabeth inquired, "What is a flat white?"
Julie let Abigail explain as she worked on them behind the counter. "It's a delightful coffee drink made with espresso and steamed milk. The difference lies in the balance—the espresso-to-milk ratio is higher than that of a caffe latte. Instead of a thick foam layer like a cappuccino, it features just a thin layer of micro-foam on top, resulting in an extra creamy flavor."
As Abigail finished preparing their order, she placed the steaming cups before the girls, a warm smile on her face. When Julie reached for her wallet to pay, Abigail gently shooed her away, shaking her head. "My shout today!"
Stepping back outside, with the sun shining brightly above, Elizabeth turned to Julie, her brow furrowed in curiosity. "What did she mean by 'my shout'?"
Julie took a sip of her beverage, closing her eyes in appreciation as the rich flavors enveloped her senses. "Oh, it means it's my treat, or it's on me," she clarified, her voice light as she savored the moment.
Imitating Julie, Elizabeth brought the cup to her lips and took a sip. The flavor exploded in her mouth, an exquisite blend of coffee and cream that was both rich and satisfying. "This is really, really good!" she exclaimed, enthusiasm evident in her voice. Julie simply nodded knowingly, taking another sip as she enjoyed the serene atmosphere around them. The afternoon was off to a perfect start.
"First off, the town square is the heart of it all and where the town Christmas tree is. This is where the Christmas Concert will be." Julie exclaimed. As they started to reach the center, Elizabeth saw the enormous, decorated tree standing in the center of a large park square. There was also a stage where they would begin setting up for the concert later.
"It's draped in fairy lights that twinkle like the Southern Cross in our summer night sky. Oh, and I can't wait for you to see the Southern Cross constellation. Anyway, as you can see, the tree is adorned with ornaments shaped like kangaroos, koalas, and boomerangs, all painted in the vibrant colors of the Aussie flag. They are homemade and have been donated by different families over the years, depending on the chosen theme each year. Around its base, there are stacks of presents, though obviously they are only for show. They serve as drop boxes for toy donations.
"Now, let's take a stroll down Main Street. The first place I want you to see is the Koala Café. Their special for the season is the "Jingle Bell Cappuccino," topped with chocolate shavings that look like little didgeridoos. The café is decked out with tinsel made from recycled fishing nets, giving it a real beach vibe." Julie said, pausing in front of the store to let Elizabeth see. After a few minutes, Julie guided her to the next store she guided Elizabeth into.
"Next door, there's Surf Santa's Shack. This little surf shop turns into a Christmas wonderland with surfboards hung like baubles from the ceiling; each one painted with scenes from Christmas Down Under. They've got Santa on a surfboard and sell Santa hats with a tiny surfboard charm. Their best seller? The "Mistletoe Boardie" – board shorts with a festive pattern. Seeing Elizabeth's interest, she guided her in for a better look around.
Ten minutes and a purchase for Scott later, Julie pointed her across the street. "Barramundi Bar and Grill is the place for a bite to eat. In fact, we will be meeting everyone there before the show for dinner. As you can see, the outdoor area is strung with lights that mimic the glow of fireflies, and their menu features a Christmas seafood platter with prawns, oysters, and barramundi, all with a hint of native lemon myrtle. You have got to try it. Then there's …"
"What exactly is Barramundi?" Elizabeth asked warily, interrupting Julie's monologue.
"Oh, it's Asian Sea Bass. Now, where was I? Oh, they've got a special cocktail called "Christmas Down Under," made with Bundaberg rum, pineapple juice, and a sprig of mint." Urging her forward, Julie continued. There's Wombat Wines, a cozy wine bar where you can sip local shiraz or chardonnay, and for the holidays, they serve Mulled Wine. They've got these adorable wine glasses with wombats etched on them, and their special holiday drink is the "Gum leaf Grog. It's a mix of sparkling wine with a dash of bush tomato cordial."
"Gum Leaf Grog?"
"I've not had it, but Colleen says it's excellent. They just brought it out this year, and I haven't tried it." Julie replied.
"Didgeridoo Delights?" Elizabeth read.
"If you're looking for authentic souvenir shopping, that's where to go. You'll find didgeridoos painted in festive colors, boomerangs with Santa designs, and Christmas ornaments made from local shells. But they also have some non-Christmasy souvenirs." Julie said. "And finally, as the sun sets, head to Kookaburra Bakery for dessert. Their signature is the "Kookaburra Pavlova."
"Pavlova?" Elizabeth asked. "What is that?"
It is the most popular dessert in Australia, and it has the texture of a macaron. It's a meringue base made from whipped egg whites and sugar. Then, it is traditionally topped with whipped cream and fruit or sometimes lemon curd or jam. But here it's topped with passionfruit curd and fresh berries, and they add a chocolate Kookaburra," Julie said, urging her inside where they could grab a sample from a plate on the counter. With a wave at a lady behind the counter, they were outside again and heading down the other side of Main Street.
"Now, here is Lili's favorite place because Wallaby's Wonderland, as you can see, is the candy shop. They have these amazing chocolate koalas that look like they're wearing Santa hats. See these?" Julie said, pointing at something in the window. Elizabeth went over to see what she was pointing out. "These are made from native flavors like Wattle seed and Lemon Myrtle."
"Are you talking about the suckers?" Elizabeth asked, trying to decide whether she wanted to try them.
"Yes, but here in Australia, they are called Lolli's. The Lemon Myrtle tastes like lemonade." Julie giggled as she grabbed Elizabeth's arms and pulled her along. "Come on, I want to show you another store I know you will love."
Just as Elizabeth started to tell her to slow down, Julie told her to look up. Elizabeth's mouth drooped open as she saw the next store. "This is Bunyip Books. Come on." Upon entering, Elizabeth saw that it was a quirky little bookstore that was unlike anything she had ever seen. The entire store was currently decorated into a scene that could be straight out of A Christmas Story. The bookshelves were draped with paper chains made from what appeared to be old book pages.
Everywhere Elizabeth looked contained a new delight. As she walked toward Julie, she saw a list of upcoming events on a flyer. Taking one, she could see that they would be putting on a presentation of A Christmas Carol in town while she was visiting.
Looking at her watch, Julie said, "Oh, Elizabeth, we need to go if we are going to grab lunch."
"Okay," Elizabeth said, still reading the paper.
"What do you have there?"
"It's a list of upcoming events, and look, they are going to be doing a presentation of A Christmas Carol on Sunday evening," Elizabeth exclaimed.
"Oh, I have heard about this, but we always miss it. Scott's on duty, but we should come. They hold it in the square where the program will be. We can make a big night of it." Julie said enthusiastically, leading her back to where they had started. Looking at her watch again, Julie noted that it was really too late for lunch.
"Why don't we get a light snack? Then I'll take you to Emu's Emporium. That's my favorite place. They have everything from boomerang Christmas cards to locally made jams and chutneys. They even have a special area for Christmas decorations and another for homemade items made from recycled beach glass, including ornaments. Oh, Elizabeth, wait until you see it. It's like Disney World if it was a store without the rides."
Elizabeth laughed. "I can't wait to see it."
Later that evening, the warm glow of the Barramundi Bar and Grill beckoned as the group gathered to enjoy a hearty meal before heading to the bustling square. The air was filled with the tantalizing aroma of grilled seafood and spices, mingling with the sound of laughter and clinking glasses.
As Elizabeth entered, her eyes quickly scanned the room, alighting on Nathan almost immediately. A ripple of curiosity washed over her as she wondered whether the whispers of his new nickname had made their way to him.
"Hello, Lizabeth," Nathan greeted her with an easy smile, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Hi, Nathan," she replied, feeling a rush of confidence. With a playful tilt of her head and a light chuckle, she added, "Or should I call you Mr. February?" She raised an eyebrow, waiting to see his reaction.
Nathan burst into laughter, a low, infectious sound that made Elizabeth's heart flutter. "Actually," he said, a teasing glint in his eye, "I'm kind of partial to Captain Fire Hazard."
Elizabeth couldn't help but giggle at his response. "I hope whoever informed you also made it clear that I wasn't the one who came up with that nickname. But after looking at that calendar, I guess it does seem fitting," she teased, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
At that moment, Nathan felt a warm flush creep up his cheeks, and he looked down for a brief second before flashing her his characteristic crooked grin. "I'm glad you think so," he retorted, the playful banter between them making the atmosphere feel even more vibrant. The easy camaraderie was palpable, and a sense of anticipation hung in the air as they continued to share lighthearted jabs and infectious laughter, setting the tone for the night ahead.
