Pairing: Cyberverse Shockwave/Bumblebee
Rating: Teen
Details/Themes: Past relationship, angst
Bumblebee didn't smile as he encountered his former lover on the battlefield. There was nothing nice he could say about Shockwave anymore but while he wished to forget the mech and what they had; Shockwave had long gotten over him.
There was not a shred of regret, no whispers of what they could have had together...nothing. It hurt more than anything that the fun they had watching Megatron's gladiatorial fights meant nothing in the long run. That was their site for most dates as they both loved watching the Pits and their favorite gladiator-turned-Decepticon warmonger. Now, it was nothing but a harsh reminder of an empty love.
If he ever locked optics with Shockwave on the battlefield, it was always a cold stare he received before it was dismissed and the mech all but left him. Even during a few stalemate talks between the two leaders of their factions, Shockwave didn't see him or at least not in regards to noticing him as anything but an enemy.
There was never a guaranteed number of times he would call Shockwave's name just to hear his voice one more time say his own with some sort of emotion, even malice would suffice. His longing fell on deaf audio receptors, something that he began to accept as time went on.
Then he heard his name called by Shockwave once. It was forced, almost detesting but it was something. Bee couldn't stop the smile on his face from hearing it though he knew quite well it was not under any circumstances an invitation to talk. As he guessed, it was only a call for Megatron to speak to him and Optimus. It didn't stop him from expressing his enjoyment of it.
In some battles, Bumblebee began to notice that he too was starting to not think of anything they had in relevance to what they were now. The bad memories began to outweigh the good. At one point, he held no emotion as he saw Shockwave once more. All he could feel was the urge to fight like enemies...because that's just what they were. Memories of the gladiatorial pits weren't as prominent as the heartache before nor was his yearning to hear Shockwave's voice say his name.
One day, that became the true reality of his feelings. He stared back at Shockwave unfazed and ready to kick Decepticon tailpipe. His processor didn't halt him; his emotions never once got the better of him. He was prepared to do what needed to be done.
"Bumblebee," Shockwave said. It wasn't with as much malice as normal but Bumblebee didn't see it as anything but.
"Shockwave," he replied dead-toned.
The name held no meaning anymore. As they both watched each other with little emotion between them, Bumblebee knew for sure that what they had was indeed never going to come back. If there was a chance, he could admit that he didn't remember most of their time together to make it work a second time.
Shockwave one day asked in another stalemate as a side conversation to pass the time, "Do you remember the fight against Saberclaw? Megatron beat him into the ground?"
Bumblebee was hesitant but to his surprise, he didn't remember it. He couldn't remember. It had been too long and giving up the hope for a relationship erased some things very memorable he would have loved to discuss most likely. He tried and tried again to search for the memory but...it didn't exist anymore.
There was dread and acceptance of the fact everything they had was forgotten. Everything. It felt so natural but so heavy to speak the truth even when he could see Shockwave seemed disappointed by the answer. It was too late to fix what was broken and he should have known that as Bumblebee knew now.
The question should have been: did he remember them?
"No."
AN: Sometimes you need a little heartache in here. It freshens everything up a bit.
