AN: Honestly, I think my favorite part about this story is integrating FF7 into Remnant like this. It's really fun making completely new versions of characters I've known and loved since I was a kid.
Without any further ado, onwards!
Introduction: Blake Belladonna and Yuffie Kisaragi
Blake Belladonna sat on a rock in the middle of a forest with pure red foliage, reading a book. She casually brushed her long black hair out of her face when the wind picked up. Her outfit was something to behold, consisting of a white crop top with a black vest over it, short white shorts with black tights underneath, and black heeled boots. On her back rested her weapon, Gambol Shroud. Atop her head was a black bow, serving a far more practical purpose than most would suspect.
Her amber eyes scanned the page, desperate to get as far in the story as she could before the operation started. She was about to turn the page, when she heard a rustling sound behind her. Her bow twitched, and an amused smirk appeared on Blake's lips.
She quickly activated her Semblance, jumping up onto the tree branch above her and leaving a doppelganger of herself still reading.
"HYAH!" a very familiar voice shouted from the brush behind where Blake had just been sitting, and a green blur tackled her clone, causing it to vanish. The blur, with nothing to stop its momentum, kept flying through the air until it landed in a pile of leaves. "Ow." Blake chuckled to herself.
The girl that had just tried to tackle her had black hair in a bob-cut and brown eyes. She wore a sleeveless green crop top and short tan shorts, with a thick light brown gauntlet covering the entirety of her left arm, and brown gloves on both hands. Around her forehead she wore a metal headband, and a bushy black fox tail with a white tip stuck out of her behind. Strapped to her back was a giant, four-pointed shuriken, called Juji.
She was Blake's best friend, Yuffie Kisaragi.
"Nice try, Yuffie," Blake said from her perch. "But you gotta be a lot more quiet than that if you want to sneak up on me."
"Ugh!" Yuffie groaned in frustration. "I figured you'd be distracted with your reading."
"That doesn't turn off my hearing," Blake said with a smirk, jumping down from the tree branch.
Yuffie pouted. "You didn't hear me this morning, and I was able to hear you mumbling in your sleep," she said petulantly.
"Y-You what?" Blake asked, her eyes opening in surprise, and a blush appearing on her face.
Last night, hadn't she dreamed about…
A mischievous grin appeared on Yuffie's face. "It sounded pretty steamy, too, sis," she said, the idea of embarrassing Blake too good to pass up. "Were you dreaming about Ninjas of Love, maybe even reenacting a few scenes?"
Blake felt her face heating up even more at that accusation.
"I bet I know who you were dreaming about," Yuffie continued with her teasing. "Blake and Adam sitting in a tree~! K-I-S-S-I-N-G~!"
Blake's face fell at Yuffie's words, surprising her friend. Clearly, Yuffie had expected her to get even more flustered, but instead Blake just looked sad.
"Hm?" Yuffie asked, her smile being replaced with a concerned look. "Blake, what's wrong?"
"I…" she said, when the third member of their team stepped out of the brush.
He was a fairly tall man, wearing black clothing, with bright red hair and two bull horns sticking out of his head. He held a sheathed katana in his left hand, and on his face he wore a bone-white mask inspired by the creatures of Grimm, with red accents decorating it.
He was the leader of their little team, Adam Taurus.
He was also Blake's…
She shook her head.
"Blake, Yuffie, it's time," he said.
"Okay," Blake said.
"Got it, boss!" Yuffie said more enthusiastically, giving the man a mock salute.
The trio ran along the edge of a cliff parallel to a train emblazoned with an all-too-familiar snowflake emblem.
"You know the drill!" Adam shouted, and the girls nodded in confirmation. "Then let's go!" At Adam's word the three of them jumped off the cliff, sliding down the steep rocks until they got close enough to the train to jump and land on its roof. All three of them drew their weapons and embedded them into the metal of the roof to slow themselves down. They quickly hopped to the next car, and Adam used his sword, Wilt, to slash open a hatch, allowing the team to jump inside.
They looked up and saw that the car was full of Atlesian Knight Model 130 Androids, that were now beginning to surround the trio.
"Looks like we're gonna be doing this the hard way," Adam said.
"Don't be so dramatic," Blake said.
"Yeah, these guys are nothing," Yuffie said confidently.
"Intruders, identify yourselves," one of the robots ordered, as it and the others aimed their arm-cannons. Adam answered by tilting his sheathed katana at the robot and pulling the trigger on the sheath, firing the sword hilt-first at the lead droid. The sword bounced off its head, spinning several times in the air, and Adam quickly dashed behind the robot, flipping the sheath around and using the rifle barrel on the back end to shoot its head off, before catching his sword and slicing the robot in half in a single movement.
"Here ya go!" Yuffie shouted, throwing Juji at some of the robots near Adam. The shuriken bounced off the wall, and Adam struck it with his sword like a baseball. The force of the impact sent the weapon bouncing all throughout the car as Blake and Adam shot at any robots the shuriken missed. Finally, Adam kicked one last robot against the back door of the car, throwing the doors open and allowing the trio to step out onto a flatcar. They saw another small army of robots running towards them.
"Let's do this," Adam said, charging in to fight them. Blake and Yuffie shared a look.
"Yo-yo?" Yuffie asked.
"Yo-yo," Blake said with a small nod.
Blake flipped Gambol Shroud into its sickle formation and threw it along the freight car at the same time Yuffie hurled Juji. Blake twisted the long black ribbon in just the right way that Gambol Shroud's blade snagged the hole in the center of the shuriken, and swung it around, using it like… well, like a giant yo-yo to slice some robots to ribbons. She heard Yuffie jump behind her, so with a flick of her wrist upwards, the two weapons were separated, sending the shuriken up into the air.
Yuffie leaped up high, catching her shuriken and landing in a group of robots. Smirking, she sliced a few of them up before throwing Juji, sending the shuriken straight through several robots before it embedded itself in the floor of the flatcar. The sound of cocking firearms got Yuffie's attention, as she realized that multiple robots had surrounded her with their arm-cannons all primed and ready to fill her with holes.
Thinking fast, she reached into her pocket and threw a smoke bomb on the ground, allowing her to dodge as the robots fired and took each other out. When the smoke cleared, Yuffie reached out towards her giant shuriken and activated the Gravity Dust weaved inside her glove, causing it to glow purple and the shuriken fly back towards her hand.
She heard the clunk of metal behind her, so instead of catching her weapon, Yuffie simply lowered her hand and stepped to the side, letting the momentum carry Juji through the air until it embedded itself in the chest of a surviving robot. She reached behind her and pulled Juji out of the android's chest, making the Knight fall to the ground in a heap.
"Come on, Adam's made it to the next car already," Blake said, and the two approached the bull Faunus, who was in the process of opening the door to the next car. Inside were rows and rows of crates bearing an irritatingly-familiar snowflake emblem. Adam opened up one of them and took a look inside. "Perfect. Move up to the next car," he said, closing the lid of the crate. "I'll set the charges."
"What about the crew members?" Blake asked.
"What about them?" Adam asked dismissively, prompting Blake and Yuffie to share uneasy looks with each other.
"Ad—" Blake tried to say, before Adam quickly looked up and fired a few shots at the ceiling. Blake and Yuffie looked up, and were shocked to see a large, multi-legged Spider Droid with a big cannon attached to its shoulder hanging from the ceiling. It dropped down in response to Adam's gunfire, and stood up to its full, intimidating height.
"Adam…" Blake said anxiously, but the young man just growled and charged at the robot.
Blake and Yuffie rushed in to back him up, but trying to fight something three times your size in a confined space proved to be innefective.
"Blake!" Yuffie cried out in concern as the black-haired girl was smacked into a crate by one of the robot's arms. She landed on her stomach, and the droid moved to crush her while she was down, but Adam scooped her up and carried her to safety before it could.
"We need to get out of here," Blake said as Adam gently placed her back on the ground.
"Duck!" Yuffie shouted, as the Spider Droid fired a large cannon shot at them. They dove out of the way, and the missed shot blew a hole in the wall behind them, revealing another flatbed car.
"That'll do," Adam said. "Come on!" The three of them quickly moved outside to gain more space to maneuver around. "Buy me some time!"
"Are you sure?" Blake asked.
"Do it!" Adam shouted.
"This is gonna suck," Yuffie said before the two girls charged at the Spider Droid. They moved perfectly in sync, having fought for years together, but the Spider Droid was way faster than any other Atlesian robot the two of them had fought before. It blocked so many of their attacks, fired guns attached to nearly all surfaces. Finally, the Droid jumped to the complete opposite end of the flatbed and widened its stance, turning itself into a stabilized cannon platform, as it deployed and began to charge up its shoulder cannon.
"I'm ready!" Adam shouted. Blake quickly retreated, and Yuffie jumped back, landing directly between Adam and the Droid.
"Hey, tin can!" Yuffie yelled. "You belong in a junkyard!"
The Droid fired a massive beam from its cannon, which tore its way through Yuffie's chest…
Or at least it would have, were it not for the fox Faunus's Semblance.
In a puff of smoke, Yuffie appeared behind Adam, while a small thick log of wood was left to be obliterated by the beam. The beam kept traveling uninterrupted, and Adam pulled just enough of his sword out of its sheath for the blade to catch the beam. After a few seconds, the beam dissipated and Adam sheathed his katana, before his body began to glow an ominous red. The Spider Droid charged at him, but Adam just chuckled.
With a mighty slash, Adam sliced the Spider Droid in half and what was left disintegrated into nothing.
Yuffie and Adam walked back towards Blake, only to see her standing on a separate train car, holding her sword in her hand with a melancholic, yet determined look on her face.
"Blake?" Yuffie asked in confusion, while Adam tried to reach his hand out towards her.
"Goodbye," Blake said, before slashing the coupler, leaving Yuffie and Adam's car to fall behind while hers kept speeding along.
Yuffie's eyes widened in surprise, before narrowing in anger. She activated her Semblance, teleporting herself onto Blake's car before it got too far. Blake took a step back at seeing the fury in her old friend's eyes.
"Blake, what are you doing?!" Yuffie yelled. Blake looked scared for a second, but her gaze hardened in determination and…
…resignation?
"I'm done," Blake said.
"What are you talking about?" Yuffie demanded. "Done with w—"
"All of it!" Blake shouted, surprising Yuffie. "I'm done with the White Fang, and I'm done with Adam. I realized a long time ago that the White Fang isn't going to make anything better for our kind. I had hoped that I was wrong, but what Adam was about to do today proved that I was right to be concerned."
"Ok, so Adam might have been out of line, but taking the fight to the humans has worked in the past," Yuffie argued.
"Yuffie, open your eyes!" Blake said. "Hurting innocent people isn't going to make them respect us, it's just going to make them fear and hate us!"
"B-But Sienna said—"
"Sienna was wrong," Blake said. "I just can't believe it took me this long to realize it." She looked down at the floor in shame.
"Blake, where's this coming from?" Yuffie asked. "You were acting like nothing was wrong before, why bring this up now?"
"…I was afraid of what Adam would do," Blake said. "I couldn't let him know that I was leaving."
"But I thought you loved him," Yuffie said. "I'm sure if you just talked to—"
"You don't know Adam like I do," Blake said. "What we had… what he did… it wasn't love."
"Blake…" Yuffie said sadly. Blake breathed deeply, like she was trying to compose herself.
"Look Yuffie, you don't have to come with me and I'm not going to force you to leave the White Fang, but I can't keep lying to myself anymore," Blake said. "You can go back, but I'm not."
"…Now what kind of sister would I be if I just abandoned you?"
"What?" Blake asked, her eyes widening in shock.
"You think I'm just gonna let you go off and do your own thing?" Yuffie asked. "Well sorry to break it to you B, but you're not gonna get rid of me that easy. Plus the White Fang would be so boring without you there."
"Yuffie, you sure you want to do this?" Blake asked. "We'll both be seen as traitors by the White Fang."
"Eh, they can shove it," Yuffie said. "Besides, they're already gonna be pissed at me when they found out how much stuff I've stolen from them. Especially Adam." She shot Blake a cheeky grin, prompting the taller girl to chuckle. "So, sis, what's the plan?"
"Well, I was gonna my luck at becoming a Huntress," Blake said. "What do you think?"
"Free room, free food, fight some Grimm…" Yuffie said. "Sounds perfect!"
"Alright," Blake said. "The closest academy to here is Beacon. We'll head there and see if we can get in."
"Yeah!"
"But if we do, no pickpocketing," Blake said sternly.
"Oh come on, it's fun," Yuffie said. "Give it a try and you'll see for yourself."
"Yuffie…" Blake said in a warning tone. Yuffie sighed.
"Fine, mom, I promise not to steal from anyone at Beacon."
"Thank you," Blake said.
"…Unless they deserve it," Yuffie quickly added at the end. Blake huffed in frustration.
"That's all I'm getting out you, isn't it?" she asked.
"Yup," Yuffie said playfully, smiling widely at Blake. After a few seconds, Blake chuckled.
"Beacon, here we come!" Yuffie said. "You know, I've got a really good feeling about this."
Blake gave her friend a small smile. "Me too."
AN: Since Yuffie keeps referring to Blake as "sis" and calls herself Blake's sister, I feel like I need to get ahead of the assumptions. Blake and Yuffie are not actually sisters. They've known each other for a long time, are best friends, and have a sisterly bond, and members of the White Fang refer each other as brothers and sisters, but they aren't actual siblings. I'm excited to write a version of Blake that isn't a complete loner, since she already has Yuffie.
Next time will be the final character introduction before we get started for real, and it's gonna be a doozy: Yang Xiao Long and Tifa Lockhart. Plus, a special appearance by a certain someone.
As always, thank you very much for reading, and I'll see you all next time!
