Chapter 2

Detective Lucy Silver was finishing her report when Detective Ryan appeared next to her desk. Lucy wasn't in the mood for the vile detective but she knew that Ryan was going to say whatever he had come to say.

"Detective Silver," Ryan said as a greeting, smoothing out his tie with his right hand.

Lucy looked up at him, her slightly narrowed green eyes showing her annoyance.

Ryan cleared his throat, obviously not bothered by the look that Lucy was giving him. "I've heard that your past few cases have involved a former detective turned private investigator." He paused for a moment to see if she would say anything, but she didn't say a word.

He leaned forward and spoke in a low voice, almost a whisper. "I have warned you before about Sandoval. It would be wise for you to discontinue working with him and his friends."

Lucy gave Ryan her most aggravated look. "Ryan, what cases I work on and with whom, is none of your business."

Ryan sighed and shook his head, crossing his arms over his protruding stomach. "I don't want to see you throwing your career away for that arrogant, hot shot that believes that just because he has some friends within law enforcement that he can be above the law."

Her eyes flashed like green lightning as she rose to her feet and she looked Ryan straight into the face. "Ryan," she said in an even tone, but with an underlying threat that not even Ryan could miss. "I do not need you talking to me about who I decide or not decide to work with on my cases. You need to focus all of your attention on your cases. That way, they will all be solved and you will have arrested the correct people."

The other detectives in the bullpen all chuckled softly as Ryan's face reddened considerably and he began to sputter incoherently

She sat down and looked up at Ryan. "This is the final time that I will even listen to you warning me about Sandoval. Now, I am going to focus on my work and you should focus on yours," she declared and dismissed him by getting back to work.

Ryan huffed, dropped his hands to his side as he spun around and returned to his desk, while the other detectives also went back to work.

A few minutes later, Darryl Sun walked up to Lucy's desk and set a cup of coffee down. The coffee came from the Perfect Cup, Lucy's favorite and frequent coffee shop. "Good morning, Lucy," he greeted with a large smile.

"Morning, Darryl," she returned as she gladly took a long sip of the delicious coffee. She returned his smile with a small one of her own, trying to shake the annoyance of Ryan's so-called advice.

"Ryan told you to avoid Carlos again?" Darryl glanced over at Ryan, who had taken a seat at his own desk and was looking at his computer monitor intently. The displeased and incensed detective was seemingly ignoring everyone around him.

Lucy set down her coffee and shot her partner an irritated gaze. "What makes you say that?"

"He said something to me the other day. I just told him to mind his own business. I wish I had been here when you told him off." Darryl chuckled noticed that his partner's emerald eyes narrowed. He raised his hands in surrender, his right hand clutching his own coffee, but he had three finger raised. "Sorry, I just know it would have been rather entertaining to watch you take down that pompous jerk."

"I suppose you would have found it interesting," Lucy admitted, toning down her irritation and decided to take another sip of her coffee. "You will have to speak with the other detectives and talk about it."

Darryl smiled and sat down at his desk, checking his emails and working on his own reports.

Lucy shrugged her shoulders and rolled her neck, trying to get the kinks out when she glanced at the clock and saw that it had been almost three hours. She looked over at her partner just as he threw the empty coffee container into the trash bin next to his desk. She had thrown out her empty coffee container an hour before and she needed another one soon.

Lucy's desk phone rang and she answered it. As she listened to the person on the other end of the call, she could see Darryl watching her. She spoke quietly into the phone and when she hung up Darryl looked at her curiously and asked, "Do we have a case?"

Lucy shook her head and answered, "No, that was Snyder. There has been another murder, but it is Walker and his team's case."

Darryl's face instantly sobered when he thought about the killer that had murdered two women in Dallas in the past couple of months.

They returned to work, only stopped for an hour lunch, which Lucy left the building to bring back coffee and sandwiches.

After several hours, Darryl looked down at his computer and rose to his feet. "I say we call it a day. I've finished my reports and I want to get home to my wife."

Lucy nodded and did the same. She didn't have anyone to go home to, so she decided to go out and she knew exactly where she wanted to go.

Carlos finished his statement and signed his name. He got up from his desk and went over to the combination fax machine and printer. He was glad that the case that had involved embezzlement and fraud was over. As he punched in the button that sent his statement to the DPD, he heard his stomach growl.

He looked around the office and saw that it was empty. He remembered that Trent had a date with Nancy and Kim had plans with her a couple her old friends from high school, so he was on his own for dinner.

He felt a little disappointed that he didn't have any plans that night. He hadn't dated anyone since Angela and that had been almost been a year. The break-up with Angela had hurt him deeply and he had been trying to get through a turbulent mix of feelings about it, even though he would never admit that to anyone at least until he had met someone.

His thoughts drifted to a new woman in his life and that woman was Detective Lucy Silver with the DPD. Her strawberry-blonde hair, green eyes and athletic body had grabbed him instantly, but she wasn't one to fall for his usual charms. When they had first met, she had arrested him on suspicion of murder. A smile crossed his face at the memory and it hadn't taken him long to learn that she was smart, tough, and dedicated to her job.

Lucy was the most interesting woman he had ever met, but he could tell that things in her past had kept her from making connections. Sure, she had made friends, but she kept her distance.

He shook his head when his stomach growled at him again and decided to get something to eat and grabbed his jacket, having noted that the nights in Dallas were beginning to drop since it was mid-September. He went out the door, securely locking it before walking down the steps and heading towards the front door of Uppercuts.

He opened the door, revealing the noisy and boisterous drinking crowd that had been anticipating a fun Friday night after a long week of work. It was far more crowded than Carlos had expected, but he made his way upstairs, ordering a drink from a passing server named Susie, who agreed to bring him his beer next time she made her way around again.

He grabbed a recently vacated table located on the upper level of the bar. Susie dropped off his beer a few minutes later, as well as a menu. He thanked her as she took off, taking orders and dropping off orders along the way.

He scanned the menu, wondering what he wanted for dinner. Susie came around and took his order, leaving again in a blur of motion. As he sipped his beer, his mind drifted, wondering what Lucy was doing at that moment. He sighed, imagining her sitting across from him, sharing a meal and a wonderful conversation together.

When he heard the door open, he looked and saw a familiar blonde with dazzling green eyes and a smile spread across his face.
