Chapter 5:
Derek Morgan took a seat in the middle of the plane and then he watched as the rest of the members of his team boarded. Derek first saw Hotchner or as the team preferred to call their leader Hotch, took a seat all the way in the back. Next was Emily Prentiss, who shot him a smile before she took her seat in front of him.
Jennifer Jareu also known as "JJ" sat next to Dr. Spencer Reid in the first row, the later carrying a book about the latest innovations of psychology while JJ had files about the case.
David Rossi took the seat across from Emily, scratching the gray part in his beard as he sat down.
The team quickly settled in and buckled seatbelts, preparing for the takeoff but it was within twenty minutes after boarding the plane, that the plane had taken off and the announcement came over the intercom, telling the team that the plane had reached a decent altitude and since there wasn't any turbulence that they could unbuckle seatbelts which every member of the team promptly did.
Derek glanced casually behind him, noting that his boss had fallen asleep quite quickly. He was glad that Hotch was getting some sleep. He knew that his boss had been dealing with some of the bureaucracy that tended to arise in the job, which Derek found detrimental to solving crimes. Profiling wasn't an exact science, but it did help to filter out what person or persons to look for in an investigation.
Derek knew that their team had a lot to answer for when something went wrong during a case. The Behavioral Analysis Unit, or BAU for short, tended to get into hot water at times during a case. It was during those situations when lives were at stake, and because of a case that would go sideways, it was those cases that tended to cause problems with the big wigs. There was also the adrenaline of chasing down a suspect or trying to find evidence of the person or persons involved could be nerve-wrecking at times. He often thought that the people reviewing the cases had either never worked in the field in his or her lives or they had forgotten what it was truly like when situations arose.
Derek brought himself back to the present and as he turned his head back around, he saw Emily watching him and sending him a knowing smile before she looked down at the papers she had set on the pull out tray in front of her.
Derek turned his head slightly and saw that David had pulled out a notebook and pen, writing down anything that came to mind about the unknown subject, or unsub for short, as he studied the case files.
Then, Derek looked over at Spencer and saw the young genius quickly reading the book that he had brought, since he had probably already read the files about the case, and with his eidetic memory, didn't need to read the information again. He could also see that JJ was looking at files; of course he couldn't tell from his vantage point whether she was looking at the current case or one of the dozen or so cases that needed the attention of the BAU.
Derek pulled out a tablet and did a search on the local news in Dallas. He was curious to see what the local news knew about the case since, sometimes, the unsub might send information to a reporter. It also helped to know what the local news and the public knew about a case.
There was one newspaper that stood out more than the rest, since its website had the most hits, and that was the Dallas Daily News and the journalist was Jake Snyder. Derek clicked on the article and began to read.
Derek saw that the unsub had been given nickname the "Blonde Killer". According to the article it was because the unsub's victims had all been blondes. He circumspectly glanced over at JJ, seeing that she was tucking a lock behind her ear as she read some paperwork in front of her.
Derek returned his attention back to his tablet, a frown on his face. JJ was a blonde and didn't fit the age that the unsub seemed to be targeting, but an unsub could be unpredictable when cornered or something has changed drastically in whatever plan they had in mind. Derek made a promise to keep an eye on JJ, just in case.
"Silver and Sun, in my office," Captain Thompson called out into the busy bullpen of the Dallas Police Department precinct.
Darryl and Lucy exchanged a look, knowing that the case they had finished had been rough, but they had done it by the book.
Lucy stood up from her desk, having noted that the Captain had called out their names in an unassuming neutral tone. It was unknown until they entered the office would they know the reason for the Captain calling them into his office, so Lucy kept her head held high, her back straight and her attention focused on the door before knowing without a doubt that the Captain wasn't calling her and her partner into his office for a reprimand.
As Lucy and Darryl entered the office, Captain Thompson took a seat in his chair and told Darryl to close the door, which he promptly did and then went to stand next to his partner. The two detectives waited for a moment while Captain Thompson settled in his chair, the man's face revealing nothing.
"No reason for you two to take a seat," the Captain stated as he ran a hand through his light brown hair which was beginning to thin slightly on top.
The two detectives exchanged meager glances both wondering what the captain was about to tell them,
Captain Thompson leaned back in his chair and looked at the two detectives. "You two did a decent job on the True-May case."
"Thank you, Captain," Darryl answered politely, his eyes still focused on the captain.
Lucy also thanked the Captain, rather absentmindedly; because her mind was circling the possibility that they had been called into the office in the first place was because Thunder Investigations had made it onto a few of her reports. She also couldn't help but wonder if it had to do with a certain private investigator that used to be a police detective.
"There is no reason for you two to worry. I called you both in here because I got a call from the Ranger Trivette and it seems that he and Ranger Walker want you both to assist on their case."
Lucy glanced over at her partner, surprised that the Rangers needed their help. It was a case that she had been keeping an eye on as was every law enforcement officer in the Dallas area, just in case there was something that would end the killings.
"When do they want us?" Darryl asked.
"Right now," Captain Thompson replied with a nod. "It seems to have worked out that you finished your current case, of course if you hadn't, it would have been put on the back burner," he announced with a frown crossing his lean face.
"Glad that didn't happen, but I've heard that the case the Rangers have been working on is a serial," Darryl responded.
Their boss nodded his head in response. "Yes, well," he cleared his throat, "you best be on the way to Ranger Headquarters."
"On our way," Darryl replied, turning toward the door. Lucy nodded her head again at the Captain and turned to follow her partner out when her boss called her name. She turned her head to look at him. "Yes?" she questioned.
"Don't allow yourself to get caught up into any trouble in this case," he ordered firmly and then softened his tone, "I know how you tend to get during cases like this, Lucy."
"Yes, Sir," she answered seeing the look of skepticism on his face as she left the office, closing the door behind her.
Lucy and Darryl walked into Company B and were greeted by Gage, Sydney, and Trivette. The Rangers had rearranged the office so they could squeeze in a large table and half a dozen chairs. Lucy saw that the table also had four laptops set up as well as an assortment of pens, notebooks, and folders.
When she looked up from the table, she could see that the Rangers had set up three boards next to Trivette's desk. She walked around the table and looked at the three boards. She could see that each victim had her own board that provided information such as notes and details of the last 72 hours of their movements before each individual disappearance, similarities between each woman and pictures of them alive as well some of the crime scene. She knew that some details wouldn't be shown on the board, but kept in the files so it wouldn't leak out to the media.
Lucy turned around just as Walker walked into the office.
Walker took off his hat and greeted the two detectives and then asked the Lucy and Darryl to take a seat, which they did, as Sydney brought over paper files and set them in front of each of them.
Walker glanced at his watch then looked at Lucy and Darryl. "I will give you two a chance to study those because the FBI team should be arriving in an hour or two. That way, we can discuss the case all at the same time."
Darryl glanced casually at his partner and saw that a tint of red stood out on her pale cheeks and her fists clenched, her knuckles showing through. He knew that Lucy didn't think much about the FBI, but he had never asked her the reason for her extreme dislike.
He was certain that Walker had noticed his partner's reaction to the mention of the FBI, but thankfully, the leader of Company B didn't pull Lucy aside to ask her about it.
He studied the information that the Rangers had given them and when Lucy excused herself to use the restroom and as she left, he glanced at his watch and realized that it had been a couple of hours and figured that the FBI agents would be arriving any minute and he couldn't help but wonder if she needed a few moments to prepare herself for the arrival of the FBI agents.
