He waited in a café for her. He made sure to be dressed the best he could be, he made sure to practice what he would say to everything she would ask, and he made sure that the place was as alone as it could be. Despite retiring from the idol industry, she was still famous after all, especially after the incident.
He didn't want anyone to interrupt their meeting.
The one he had planned with the help of some little pushing. Admittedly it would be a gamble; his options were either Ryosuke to kill her or for him to scare her enough to bring her back to him. Either way he would end up winning.
He took a quick sip from his coffee to hide the mischievous smile that formed on his face; he couldn't risk her figuring it out the moment she walked in.
Speaking of which…
The moment the bell of the door rang, he shot his head up, looking at her. She was wearing sunglasses and a hat she used to hide her face, but either way, he would be able to recognize her wherever she went. Everything about her was how he remembered it, the air around her, the way she seemed to walk as if she owned the place, and despite the fact that he couldn't see her eyes, he was sure that playful light was within them. Along with the darkness that she worked so hard to hide from everyone else.
Everyone else but him, because in the entire world he was the only one capable of understanding her.
After she sat down, he could feel that there was something wrong. She was just sitting there, looking at him and now saying anything, almost as if she was waiting for something.
"Do I have something on my face?" He asked in a playful manner, though he couldn't help but feel how his stomach hurt a little the moment her glare hardened. "I'll order a coffee for you."
"There's no need to; I won't be staying for long." Ai said as she picked up her purse and check in it.
"I heard about the incident on the news." He said, causing her to freeze with her hand still in the purse. "It didn't happen that long ago, right? Is everything okay? I thought about calling you, but the last time we talked was from a public phone, so…"
"The doctor said that he actually managed to hit an organ; there was also some internal bleeding, and apparently I will have a scar for the rest of my life." Ai responded in a cutting manner, almost spitting the words out for him. "Jaune's been taking care of me."
Jaune… Jaune… Jaune, Jaune, Jaune. He had heard the name a couple of times before; he had seen the man even fewer times, and he had seen the two together only one time.
He was Ai's substitute for him. The boy toy that would give her all the love she could ever want, and then when he least expected it, she would just leave him in a harsh manner. The worst part of all was that she wouldn't do it in a normal moment; it would be when he depended on her, when he needed her the most, when he believed that the two of them would be together. That's the moment in which she would break his heart into a million pieces and then would never show her face to him again. Then and only then would she break up with him.
"How kind of him." He said while taking another sip of his coffee.
"Isn't it?" Ai said, and for a fraction of a moment, he was sure that he saw a bit of a smile forming on her face. "He's also been helping me with the kids."
"The kids…" He repeated it a bit absentmindedly before smiling once more. "How are they? Ruby and Aqua, our little babies. It would have been good to have been able to see them."
"You didn't want to come see them when they were born, so I assumed you didn't have any interest in them." Ai responded in a dismissive manner before going back to searching for the inside of her purse. "Here it is."
Ai then put on the table an envelope; without minding too much, she pushed it towards him… And that's the moment in which he saw it.
A ring. A diamond ring right on her finger where it belonged, she made sure that she was able to see it; she was sure that the image of the ring was in his mind from now on, and she made sure that he knew the contents of the envelope before even opening it.
Even then, with a heavy heart and a shaking hand, he picked it up, opened it, and read it.
JAUNE ARC AND AI HOSHINO
REQUEST THE PLEASURE OF YOUR COMPANY AT THE CEREMONY OF THEIR WEDDING.
YOU ARE INVITED: SUNDAY, 26th OF DECEMBER OF THE YEAR 20XX
ADDRESS (Couldn't think of anything)
It was the simplest thing ever, four lines, all of them short; most of the paper was taken by a bunch of bunny and moon drawings. But even with the invitation being so short, it took him five minutes to finally let the paper down and stare right into her eyes. She had removed her glasses and was looking at him with determined eyes, a look he had never seen on her face before.
"Jaune and I are getting married."
He could kill him. Make a down-on-their-luck bastard take him to some remote place in the middle of nothing with some r*tarded excuse, manipulate said bastard to stab him and kill him in the best case scenario, or put in a scenario where Jaune would be forced to kill him and, with a little tip of the police and some more help, make it look like an actual murder.
"Great to hear. Why him? Did he make you feel the same way I did?"
Or he could kill her. There weren't too many people around, and if she was alone, then she could drag her to somewhere no one could see them and wring her neck. She wouldn't be able to escape; she herself said she wasn't good in health. If he wanted to, he could have some fun before killing her.
"No. He is completely different from you."
Or the kids, he was sure she loved the kids. If they were in danger, he was sure that she would jump the gun and do anything in order to protect them, having her reject that dumbass, making her run away just to protect them. If he had control over the kids, he would be able to make her dance to whatever tune he wished for her to dance to.
"Then why!?" He finally exploded, letting out a shout that made everyone else in the café turn to look at him. "Why him of all people, but not me!?"
"Because he loves me just the way I am." Ai responded, and for the first time in his life, he saw her expression turning aggressive. "I loved you; for so long I didn't know what I felt when seeing you, but now that I am with Jaune, and I am sure of my feelings for him, I can say that from the bottom of my heart that I loved you. But I realized that you were becoming dependent on me, that you were becoming obsessive, that you began to isolate everything around that wasn't me, and that worried me. I thought that I was doing the correct thing, but I realize that I could have done it better… that's the reason why I didn't continue with Jaune."
He was this close to strangling her. He didn't even care if there were witnesses; he was going to kill her, and just like that, the legacy of Ai Hoshino would remain just like before that man entered his life, because with the exception of this moment, all the images of Ai that he would see in the future would be at her brightest.
"I have to admit… At the start I was using Jaune as a replacement for you; the two of you were so similar in both appearance and attitude that I just couldn't help it." Ai explained, her expression turning sour for a moment before recovering the lost energy. "But then, I realized just how different you two were. The reason we got together to begin with was because of how broken we were, but Jaune wasn't like that; he had lived a good life and had an incredible dream; he was the complete opposite of the two of us. I was falling in love because of just how much he supported me… I guess in a way I became similar to you, but unlike you, my world didn't end with Jaune. The amount of new things I've done with him, the amount of fears that I conquered because of him, the amount of time that he has seen under my mask and been able to talk to my true self, along with the amount of time he helped me show it to others. It was just a matter of time before I truly fell in love with him."
"Ai… Why did you bring that here?" He asked before killing her; he needed to know that. She could have left him alone, but for some damn reason she decided to bring it with her.
"How did Ryosuke know where I lived?" His anger disappeared for a second as his eyes widened. "I never told anyone outside of Jaune and the agency where I lived."
"I think you already know my answer."
"…I do."
A lightning stroke him in the face, or at least that was the only way he could understand both the sudden shock and the burning sensation that ravaged half of his face. So much was the impact that he shook a little in place, and after a few seconds of trying to regain his equilibrium, he collapsed. Confused, he raised his view and saw Ai looking down at him with a furious expression that was drowned by a profound pain.
"That day I called you because I wanted to apologize to you! I wanted you to meet Jaune because I was sure that the two of you could become good friends! I wanted you to meet your children because I knew that they deserved to know!" Ai furiously picked up her purse and put it over her shoulder. "I want you to know that the only reason I am not reporting you is that the only apology you will receive out of me! I don't want to ever see you again, nor do I want you to ever approach anyone from my family! And if you do, I will make sure that you rot in prison for the rest of your life!"
With that final point, Ai put on her glasses once more and stepped out of the café with so much anger that everyone that was about to be in her way moved away almost instantly.
Hikaru, with the help of some waitresses, managed to get up, and when turning to look at the table, he realized that Ai had taken the invite with her. Around him he could hear the voices of the other customers who were in the middle of theorizing what he had done to receive such a violent reaction out of Ai.
Not wishing to be there, he took some money out of his wallet and put it on the table. He may have paid more than he was supposed to, but at the moment he really didn't care.
"Jaune Arc…" Hikaru Kamiki muttered as he wandered the streets. He repeated the name a couple more times, making sure that he recorded it in his mind; he would also ask Nino for some pictures just so he could remember his face.
Ai wouldn't have acted that way. Hikaru would discover what Jaune had done to her, and then the two of them would be able to be back together as if nothing had happened.
