Location: Peridea

Date: 5 ABY

The Chimera cut through the void, its massive bulk gliding toward Peridea with precision. From the command bridge, Thrawn gazed out at the unfamiliar world below. He could see the silhouette of the Executor, already in orbit. It was Piett, punctual as ever, with a Jedi contingent aboard. A slight smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

A voice crackled over the comms. "Admiral Piett here."

Thrawn folded his hands behind his back. "Ah, Admiral Piett. It's good to see we've both arrived safely."

"Indeed," Piett's voice replied, steady. "The Jedi with me are to assist Lord Vader with his quest on the surface."

Thrawn nodded, though Piett couldn't see it. "Very well. We'll begin our descent soon." His gaze shifted to the planet's surface. "After your task is complete, Admiral Piett, I suggest we test communication with your Executor across this new galaxy."

"Understood," Piett replied. "The Nightsister provided a starmap beyond Peridea. Once we're done here, we will make our way to the Velaris system."

Thrawn arched a brow. "Velaris? Interesting choice. We will depart for the Miwok system once our mission is complete. Let's see how well our long-range comms fare in this unknown space."

"Agreed. I'll prepare for the test after we finish."

The comms clicked off just as Vader, Ezra Kata, Luke, and Spectre Seven stepped into the Chimera's hangar. Lined up in neat rows were the latest models of TIE Defenders, and Vader's personal TIE Advanced, sleek and angular. Thrawn's hand in the designs was unmistakable.

Ezra let out a low whistle. "Never thought I'd get to fly one of these bad boys. Too bad we forgot to bring the T6."

Vader turned slightly, his dark mask betraying no expression. "You'll find the Defender a superior craft. I piloted one of Thrawn's prototypes nearly a decade ago in the Unknown Regions. They've improved much since then."

Spectre Seven chuckled, slapping the hull of one of the fighters. "Well, let's hope these beauties hold up during this little adventure and whatever else we run into."

Luke, ever the calm presence, nodded in agreement. "They'll do just fine."

As they climbed into their respective ships, the hum of engines filled the hangar. Ezra fumbled with the controls for a moment, then laughed. "Whoa, this thing's quick! Turns like a dream."

Luke glanced over and noticed Kata struggling slightly to steady her craft. Her hands gripped the controls a little too tight, and the Defender wobbled in response. Through their Force bond, he sent her a calm, reassuring thought: "You got this, Snips."

A small smile tugged at her lips. She adjusted her grip and stabilized the fighter, falling in line with the others. Together, the squad descended toward the planet's surface.

The landscape was jagged, rough—perfect for hiding secrets. As they approached the coordinates given by Baylan Skoll, they spotted the familiar form of a T6 shuttle, already landed and waiting. Standing by it were Cal, Merrin, and Gungi. The trio waved as Kata landed her ship nearby, with the others following suit.

Kata jumped out first, smiling back at Cal and Merrin. "Hey! Good to see you."

Merrin returned the smile, but her eyes flickered nervously toward Vader as he emerged from his TIE Advanced. Cal remained quiet, his hand resting on the hilt of his lightsaber, as if unsure of how to react.

Vader, sensing the tension, addressed them directly. "Kestis. What I did to you and your allies… is unforgivable. I don't expect your forgiveness. But I will do everything in my power to make it right."

Cal's jaw tightened, but after a moment, he nodded, albeit reluctantly. "We'll see about that… Right now, we're here for the portal. The details we've been given are pretty vague."

Vader's deep voice rumbled as he stepped forward. "The portal grants access to both the past and the future. It's tied to the World Between Worlds, a nexus of the Force. Peridea holds one of these ancient gateways."

Merrin crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing. "A portal that can control time? That's dangerous."

Gungi, always more instinctual than conversational, gave a low growl of agreement.

Luke, ever the optimist, stepped beside Vader. "We're not here to misuse it. Our focus is on understanding it—controlling it so we can see future threats."

Kata glanced at the ancient temple in the distance. "So… we just go in?"

"Not we," Vader said, his voice firm. "I will go alone."

The group turned to him, confused.

"You are not prepared for what lies within," Vader continued. "The World Between Worlds is not just a gateway. It is a place where all things converge—past, present, and future. Only one of us should bear that responsibility."

There was a pause as the others exchanged uneasy glances. Even Luke seemed unsure. "If something happens—"

"It won't," Vader cut in, his tone final. "I will return. Just watch the Temple."

With that, Vader turned and made his way toward the temple alone. The others watched in silence as he disappeared into the ancient structure. The air seemed to grow colder, heavier, as if the very planet was holding its breath.

The temple was as old as time itself, its walls carved with symbols worn down by millennia of wind and rain. At its center was the portal, a swirling vortex of light and energy. Vader stepped forward, his boots echoing in the empty chamber. He could feel the power emanating from it, raw and untamed, pulling at him like a whisper in the Force.

For a moment, he hesitated. Then, with a deep breath, he stepped through.

The world around him twisted, bending and warping as time itself seemed to unravel. Images flickered before his eyes—memories of the past, flashes of the future. He saw himself as Anakin, standing in the Jedi Temple, lightsaber in hand. He saw Luke, older, wiser, standing on a battlefield. He saw worlds beyond Peridea, places untouched by the Empire, filled with strange beings and unknown dangers.

Reality buckled, and for a moment, Vader felt as though he might be torn apart. But then, just as suddenly, it all stopped. He found himself standing in a vast, empty void, surrounded by stars and swirling lights. The World Between Worlds.

It was silent here, save for the hum of the Force all around him. He stepped forward, his gaze scanning the endless pathways stretching out before him. Each one led to a different moment in time, a different reality.

This was the power he had sought for so long. And yet, now that he stood at its threshold, he felt no triumph. Only a deep, unsettling quiet.

Vader moved forward, each step echoing in the emptiness as he began his journey through time itself. He walked for what felt like hours—time had no meaning here.

The first portal appeared on his right. Through it, he saw Kata and Luke, older, perhaps a decade older. Their bond had deepened, and from their body language, it was clear they were more than just Master and Apprentice. Vader watched them for a moment, reminded of his own relationship with Padmé, though he quickly pushed the thought aside. He had turned to the dark side because of his inability to let go. This was different.

He moved on.

The next few portals showed scenes from the Clone Wars—moments of battle, victory, and loss. Fast forward to one particularly haunting portal showed him killing Ahsoka on Cymoon 1 during an Imperial mission. Luke had escaped with his Jedi masters, Spectre Seven and Ezra. Another portal revealed a brutal duel on Jedha, where he had slain Cere Junda, destroying their Jedi archives in the process. The agent who had exposed that information had vanished—a mystery even to him.

Vader sighed. These were the actions of his past self, the Darth Vader who had once been consumed by darkness. He could not change them, but he could move forward.

And then he heard it—the alien screams. Vong. They appeared in the next portal, their ships battling against a combined force of Mon Calamari, Chiss, and Imperial cruisers. The scene was chaotic, with organic-looking Vong ships clashing violently with the sleek metal of the Republic, Mon Calamari, and Imperial fleets. But then, in an instant, all fleets except the Vong jumped into hyperspace, leaving a massive flash of white light behind.

Chandrila. The destruction was unmistakable. The New Jedi Temple in ruins, and the fate of the survivors unknown.

And then, something stranger—blue energy began to overtake the battlefield, disintegrating the Vong and empowering Imperial troops.

Vader kept moving, his pace steady. He couldn't linger on any one moment for too long.

"Snips?" Vader called out, his voice echoing in the void.

"Anakin," Ahsoka's voice replied from behind him. He turned to see her standing on one of the pathways, her face calm, but her eyes filled with something like sadness. "I warned Baylan about the power here. Wonder if he told you…"

"Not exactly. He was vague," Vader replied, moving closer to her.

Ahsoka crossed her arms, smiling faintly. "So, what's your plan now? You intend to use this to navigate the galaxy?"

"This place only shows conflict—past and future."

"The Force lets most people live in relative peace," Ahsoka said with a small smile. "While the Chosen One has to fight."

Vader let out a low, humorless chuckle. "I suppose I fight when no one else will. I gather those willing to fight for what's right."

"You've always fought, Master," Ahsoka replied. "It's just that your motivation changes."

Vader rolled his eyes, earning a soft laugh from Ahsoka.

She tilted her head. "What if you stop fighting?"

"If I do what must be done, then I will die in peace," Vader answered.

Ahsoka's smile faded. "So that's it, huh? You'll fight until you can't anymore, and then just disappear into the Force?"

Vader nodded. "That's the way of things."

"You're not immortal, you know," Ahsoka said quietly. "There will always be more threats."

"I know, Snips. But I mean the threats that only I can stop. Only a handful of Jedi left can face what's coming."

Ahsoka nodded, understanding in her eyes. "I get it."

The silence between them stretched, the stars above and below glimmering in the endless void.

"Why else are you here?" Ahsoka asked after a moment.

Vader hesitated, then smirked. "I suppose… I want to control the galaxy's fate. I once told Qui-Gon I didn't want to control my fate, but maybe I've realized it's all connected."

Ahsoka raised an eyebrow. "So, what's the lesson here, Chosen One?"

Vader gave a small, almost bitter smile. "To let it go."

"Remove your mask," Ahsoka requested, her voice soft.

Vader paused, but after a moment, he complied. He removed the remodelled mask, revealing his recovering face. His skin was healthier, though still scarred, his hair now a short buzz cut. The years had not been kind to him, but they hadn't taken everything. He wasn't the same broken man who had once fallen on Mustafar.

Ahsoka reached out, gently placing a hand on his cheek. "Let the obligations and pressure go, Anakin. You don't need to prove anything to anyone. You've done enough. The galaxy is safer because of you. You're doing this because you can, because you want to do right. Not because you have to."

Vader blinked, his expression softening under her touch. He had always been driven by duty, by the weight of his choices. But standing here, in this strange place between worlds, Ahsoka's words made him feel something he hadn't allowed himself to feel in years—relief.

"I'm proud of you, Master," she added, her voice quiet, filled with the warmth of their old bond.

Vader didn't respond with words. Instead, he wrapped his arms around her in a quiet embrace, pulling her close. They stood there, in the vastness of the World Between Worlds, a moment of stillness amidst the chaos of time.

"Now go," Ahsoka said after a long moment, pulling away slightly. "The galaxy needs you. But remember… it's okay to rest sometimes."

Vader gave a small nod. "I will. Thank you, Snips."

They bowed to each other in mutual respect, a gesture that spoke of the years of history between them. Ahsoka turned, disappearing into the void, leaving Vader standing alone.

Vader exited the portal, stepping back into the cold, ancient chamber of the temple. The others were waiting for him, though they could tell immediately that something had changed. His demeanor was different—not softer, but more at peace.

Luke approached him first, his eyes searching his father's face. "Are you alright?"

Vader nodded, slipping the mask back into place. "Yes. The path is clear."

Ezra looked over, curious. "What did you see in there?"

Vader glanced at him, then at the others. "The past. The future. Things that no longer matter… and things that yet come to pass."

Cal frowned. "Did you find what we're looking for? The key to stopping whatever's coming?"

Vader didn't answer right away. His mind was still processing everything—the Vong invasion, the destruction of Chandrila from a white flash, the blue energy that had consumed both friend and foe. And then there was the message from Ahsoka… the importance of letting go, of not trying to control everything. It was a lesson he had been forced to learn time and again.

"We're close," he finally said. "But there's more to uncover."

Merrin, standing near Cal, eyed Vader warily. "More conflict, I'm guessing."

"Always," Vader replied, his tone dry. "But we're prepared for it. The galaxy is full of threats, but we are ready."

Vader hesitated for a fraction of a second, remembering the portal where he had seen Kata and Luke, older, their relationship having deepened over the years. He didn't know how to explain it—not yet. He would have to speak to Luke privately about it later.

Luke gave him a curious glance, sensing the weight behind his father's words but choosing not to push further. "We'll deal with whatever comes next together."

Vader looked at them all—the strange group that had come together despite the odds. Jedi, Nightsister, former Sith, former Inquisitor, survivors, and warriors. It was an odd collection of people, but somehow, it made sense.

"Let's get back to the ships," he said, his voice firm once again, as if the weight of the galaxy had settled back on his shoulders. "We've got work to do."

As they made their way back to the TIE Defenders and the T6 shuttle, Luke hung back for a moment, catching up to his father.

"You seemed… different in there," Luke said quietly, keeping his voice low enough so the others wouldn't hear. "Did you see a spirit again?"

Vader glanced at him. "Ahsoka. We spoke."

"Ahsoka..." Luke contemplated.

"About what?"

"About the past and our fate," Vader said simply. "And about letting go."

Luke nodded slowly, understanding. He knew his father carried a heavy burden—one that no one else could truly understand. "It's hard?"

"Yes," Vader admitted. "But it's necessary."

They reached the ships, and as the engines hummed to life, Vader took one last glance at the ancient temple. The World Between Worlds had shown him things—things that would shape the galaxy in ways he couldn't yet predict. But he felt a sense of clarity. He knew his purpose.

As they lifted off, heading back toward the waiting fleet, Vader allowed himself a moment of quiet reflection. He had fought all his life, first as Anakin Skywalker, then as Darth Vader. And now, in this new chapter, he was neither of those things entirely. He was something different, something still evolving.

But whatever he was, he would continue to fight—not out of obligation, but because he chose to.
