The hospital room was quiet except for the faint hum of machines and the occasional beeping of monitors. Rachel sat propped up against pillows, her body still adjusting to the comforts of civilization after months of survival. Finn sat beside her, his hand clasped in hers, both of them waiting anxiously.
Then, the door burst open.
"Rachel!"
The familiar voice of her father, Leroy, rang through the room before she was enveloped in the tightest hug she'd ever felt. Tears streamed down his face as he held onto her like he might never let go. Her other dad, Hiram, was right behind him, his usually composed face crumpling with emotion as he joined the embrace.
"My baby," Hiram whispered, his voice thick with tears. "We thought—" His breath hitched as he kissed her temple, squeezing her hands.
Rachel's own tears spilled freely as she clung to them. "I'm here," she whispered. "I'm okay."
Leroy cupped her face, his eyes searching hers like he couldn't believe she was real. "You have no idea how much we've prayed, how much we've searched for you. The world has been waiting for this moment. We have been waiting for this moment."
She nodded, barely able to speak past the lump in her throat. "I missed you both so much."
Finn stood beside them, giving them space, but Rachel reached out for his hand, pulling him closer. Hiram and Leroy turned their attention to him, their emotions shifting from overwhelming relief to gratitude.
Leroy's voice was thick as he spoke. "Finn… thank you for taking care of her."
Finn shook his head. "We took care of each other."
Hiram swallowed hard before stepping forward, his arms wrapping around Finn in a hug. "You brought her home to us. We'll never forget that."
Rachel watched the exchange, her heart swelling with emotion. But just as she was about to respond, she noticed the way her dads' expressions changed—shifting from relief to surprise, then concern.
"Rachel," Leroy started, his eyes scanning her closely. "Sweetheart… are you—?"
Rachel let out a soft laugh, wiping her eyes. "Pregnant?"
Hiram gasped, covering his mouth with his hand. "You're pregnant?"
Finn's grip on her hand tightened, and Rachel nodded, bracing herself. "Yes. I found out on the island."
For a long moment, neither of her dads spoke. Their eyes darted between her and Finn, their faces unreadable. Then, Leroy let out a sharp exhale, rubbing a hand down his face. "Oh… wow."
"Wow?" Rachel repeated, a nervous laugh escaping her.
"We just—" Hiram took a shaky breath, shaking his head as if trying to process everything at once. "We just found out you're alive, and now we find out you're bringing life into the world?"
Rachel bit her lip, glancing at Finn. "I know it's a lot."
"A lot?" Leroy let out a watery chuckle. "That's an understatement. But Rachel, you're okay, and that's all that matters right now."
Rachel's breath hitched. "So… you're not mad?"
Hiram stepped closer, pressing a hand against her cheek. "Mad? No, sweetheart. Just… shocked. You've been through so much already, and now you're going to be a mother. We're just worried about how you'll handle everything."
Leroy crossed his arms, his brows furrowed. "Are you sure you're ready for this?"
Rachel inhaled deeply, her fingers tightening around Finn's. "I don't think anyone's ever ready, especially not under these circumstances. But we survived that island together, and we're going to survive this too."
Finn nodded, his voice firm. "I love her. And I love this baby. I won't let anything happen to them."
Leroy let out a deep sigh, exchanging a look with Hiram. Then, finally, he smiled—a soft, exhausted smile full of love. "Then I guess we're going to be grandfathers."
Hiram let out a half-laugh, half-sob, pulling Rachel into another hug. "We'll be here every step of the way. Whatever you need, whenever you need it."
Rachel closed her eyes, letting herself sink into the warmth of their embrace. The weight of the past five months, the uncertainty, the fear—it all melted away in that moment.
She was home. And she wasn't alone.
Finn wrapped his arm around her shoulders, anchoring her in the present. No matter what came next, they had their family. And that was enough.
Rachel was still processing everything—her return home, her pregnancy becoming real in the eyes of her family, and the overwhelming relief of survival—when a soft knock sounded on her hospital door.
Finn, who had been half-asleep in the chair beside her bed, immediately sat up. Rachel looked toward the door as a woman in a crisp uniform entered. She had a kind but professional expression, a clipboard tucked under her arm.
"Miss Berry, Mr. Hudson?" the woman asked, glancing between them.
"That's us," Finn said cautiously.
The woman smiled. "I'm Joanna Hayes. I work with wildlife rehabilitation and sanctuary placement. I'm here to talk to you about Coconut."
Rachel's heart skipped a beat. She sat up straighter, her fingers gripping the blanket. "Coconut? How is he?"
Joanna's expression softened. "That's actually why I'm here. Since arriving at our facility, Coconut has been showing signs of severe anxiety. He's been refusing food at times, pacing a lot, and seems very distressed."
Rachel's stomach twisted. "Oh no."
Finn ran a hand through his hair, worry creasing his face. "It's because he thinks we abandoned him, isn't it?"
Joanna nodded. "Monkeys, especially ones that have formed strong bonds with humans, can experience emotional distress when separated suddenly. It seems like he's struggling with being apart from you both."
Rachel pressed a hand to her chest, guilt hitting her like a wave. "I knew he'd be confused, but I didn't think it would be this bad. What can we do? Can we visit him?"
Joanna smiled. "That's actually what I was coming to suggest. We'd like to arrange a viewing for you both. It might help ease his anxiety and reassure him that he hasn't been abandoned."
Rachel let out a relieved breath, turning to Finn with wide eyes. "We can see him?"
Finn nodded, his own relief visible. "Yeah, we have to. He needs to know we're still here."
Joanna pulled out her clipboard. "We can set up a visit for tomorrow. It'll be in a controlled environment so he's not overwhelmed. You won't be able to take him home, but you'll get to see him, interact with him, and hopefully help him adjust to his new home."
Rachel's heart still ached at the thought of not being able to bring Coconut back with them, but knowing she'd see him again made the heaviness lift just a little. "Thank you," she said sincerely. "This means so much to us."
Joanna nodded warmly. "You're welcome. We've all grown very fond of Coconut, and we want to make sure he's as happy and comfortable as possible."
As Joanna left, Rachel turned to Finn, her voice softer now. "He's scared, Finn. Just like we were."
Finn took her hand, squeezing it gently. "Yeah, but we're gonna show him he's not alone. Just like we did for each other."
Rachel exhaled, already counting down the hours until they could see their little companion again. He had been a part of their survival, their makeshift family on the island. And now, even in this new world, she refused to let him feel forgotten.
Tomorrow, they would remind Coconut that love didn't disappear just because circumstances had changed. He was still theirs—no matter what.
Rachel could barely sit still in the hospital transport van as it drove through the quiet streets. Her hands fidgeted in her lap, her stomach twisting with a mix of excitement and nerves. Finn sat beside her, his leg bouncing as he stared out the window.
"I feel like we're about to see a long-lost relative or something," he muttered.
Rachel let out a breathy laugh. "Because we are. He is family."
Finn turned to her, his expression soft. "Yeah. And I bet he's gonna lose his mind when he sees us."
Rachel hoped so. Joanna had made it clear that Coconut had been anxious and struggling since their separation. The thought of him pacing, refusing food, waiting for them—it made her heart ache.
But today, they were going to fix that.
When they arrived at the wildlife sanctuary, Joanna met them outside, leading them toward a private viewing area. "We've kept Coconut in a section with minimal contact so he wouldn't get too overwhelmed," she explained as they walked. "But he's been extra restless today, almost like he knew something was happening."
Rachel clutched Finn's hand. "He does know," she whispered.
Joanna smiled and gestured toward a glass-enclosed indoor space where Coconut was perched on a branch. His little body was tense, his tail flicking as he looked around restlessly.
Then, the second Rachel and Finn stepped into the room, Coconut's head snapped toward them.
For a moment, there was silence.
And then—
A loud, excited chittering filled the air.
Coconut launched himself off the branch, scrambling to the front of the enclosure as if he were trying to climb straight through the glass. His tiny hands pressed against it, his eyes wide with shock and overwhelming joy.
Rachel's throat tightened. "Coconut," she whispered, stepping closer.
Coconut let out an excited squeak before bouncing wildly from branch to branch, flipping, twisting, and practically vibrating with energy. He chattered nonstop, his noises filled with urgency, as if trying to tell them everything that had happened since they'd been apart.
Finn laughed, pressing a hand against the glass. "I think he missed us."
Rachel wiped at the tears forming in her eyes. "I knew he was smart, but this… this is something else."
Joanna chuckled, watching the reunion. "I've never seen him this animated. He's been lethargic and quiet since he got here, but now? Look at him."
Coconut kept up his excited bouncing before stopping abruptly. He pressed his tiny hands against the glass again, staring at Rachel with big, intelligent eyes.
Without thinking, Rachel reached up, mirroring his touch from the other side of the glass. "We're here," she whispered. "We didn't forget you."
Coconut let out a soft cooing noise, his tail curling in a slow, happy motion.
Joanna gave them some space before eventually stepping forward. "We can arrange for a more direct interaction next time, but for now, he needed to see you. To know you're still here."
Rachel nodded, her heart aching as Coconut continued to watch them with an almost human-like adoration. "What happens next?" she asked.
Joanna smiled kindly. "Coconut will stay here while we evaluate his condition. If he continues improving, we can work on finding the best long-term placement for him."
Rachel swallowed the lump in her throat. "Can we keep visiting him?"
"Absolutely," Joanna assured her. "He's clearly bonded to you both, and maintaining that connection will help him adjust."
Finn let out a breath, his shoulders relaxing. "Good. Because there's no way we're just leaving him behind."
Rachel turned back to Coconut, who was still glued to the glass, his eyes watching her every move.
"We'll be back," she promised. "You're still part of our family, okay?"
Coconut let out another happy squeak, rubbing his tiny hands against the glass in response.
Rachel smiled through her tears, knowing this wasn't goodbye.
Coconut had saved them in more ways than one. And now, it was their turn to make sure he was safe and happy—just like he had done for them.
