"That's bullshit Kakashi and you know it." Guy was seething. His hands were itching to get onto Hiashi for what he did to Neji. Neji was Guy's boy, not his!
"Look," Kakashi said softly. "We have to do right by Neji and focus on him right now."
Guy hated to admit it, but Kakashi was right. He knew he made the right choice in notifying his police contacts. Sakura was quite surprised to learn that he had any. The drive with the pink haired girl to the police station was one littered with questions.
The police may have been corrupt, but Kakashi Hatake was Guy's favorite corrupt cop. His new partner and protege, Naruto Uzamaki was fastly becoming someone Guy liked as well. Guy watched as the young man apprehended Hiashi Hyuga.
It was a surprise that Sakura happened to know Naruto. It really was a small world after all.
While Sakura was unable to see the state Neji was in, she frantically looked Lee over for any external injuries. "Are you okay?" She asked, "Are you hurt?"
"I am fine Sakura," Lee assured her, holding her still by the arms.
Sakura gave pause. That was the first time he used her name. "Oh Lee..." Her mouth was left agape as she saw a glimpse of Neji's limp form being picked up by Officer Kakashi. Other policemen and paramedics began showing up, preparing a stretcher for the Hyuga.
Lee forced Sakura's head into his chest. "Do not look." His words were choked up as he held back his own emotions. He made eye contact with Guy. "I will be back Sakura, I promise. Please, stay here with the cops." Lee regretfully pulled away and went towards Guy Sensei as they approached Neji together.
Lee's presence was replaced by Naruto, who stood idly by. Sakura glanced at him, blinking away her tears. "Naruto," she said simply.
"Hey Sakura," he replied.
"I never knew that you passed the academy."
Naruto rubbed the back of his neck. "I didn't want to hide it from you, but I didn't have any other choice. Believe me. I was immediately tasked with some pretty underground missions, the higher-ups at the station warned me against telling anyone." He then cocked his head at her. "But uh... How did you end up involved in all this?"
Sakura sighed deeply. "Trust me Naruto, it's a long story. One day we'll get together over some tea and I'll tell you."
On the other side of the courtyard, Officers Shikamaru Nara and Choji Akimichi were leading Hiashi into the back of a police vehicle. He was grinning to himself, knowing that within a few days time he'd be let out of police custody. It didn't matter what they did, the power the Hyuga Clan had over the city was like an iron grip.
Lee and Guy watched with frowning faces, hovering over Neji as the paramedics checked him over. Guy turned to Lee, his brows knit together. "Lee..." He said, "Where is Tenten?"
Lee froze as he realized he had completely forgotten the whole reason they were there. The immediate threat of Neji's injuries took Lee out of reality. "Tenten...! She's—"
"Right here!" The sound of Tenten's shouting voice boomed over the courtyard. She had a black eye and her chest was heaving. Scratches littered her milky skin. But overall, she looked fine. Two men slunk behind her, sporting similar injuries. They didn't look like Hyuga at all, lacking the telltale white eyes they all shared. One had face tattoos and the other had sunglasses. They must have been some kind of hired help.
Even further behind them was another Hyuga. This one however, did not carry herself with any pride. This was Hiashi's daughter; the Yakuza princess. She carried herself rather meekly, fingers intertwining and un-twining themselves.
Tenten ran across the courtyard once she realized that Neji was in a stretcher. The sound of her footst slapping against the ground, echoed against the buildings. "Neji!" Her voice cried out. She bounded over, nearly slamming into Lee's side. Her hands were shaking as she reached for Neji's hand. His hand hung limply over the side of the stretcher. "Neji..."
The sight of his bruised face and neck brought her to tears. There was so much blood streaming from his nose. He was hardly recognizable. Between the two of them, Lee always knew that Neji was better looking one. He always gained attention for his appearance and now that was soiled. Lee placed his hands onto Tenten's shoulders to comfort her the best he could.
Kakashi loomed over the youngsters. "He'll pull through," he promised them. "But you have to let us take him now."
Tenten did not want to let go of his hand. She fought every urge she had to not throw herself on top of Neji. He was breathing, that was for sure. But his breaths were shallow. It was hard to tell if he had his eyes open, they were so swollen. Neji wasn't responding to outside stimulus either.
"Tenten," Lee urged her. "You must let go."
"No..." Tenten choked out a sob. "No!"
Lee hardly felt able to leave Neji's side himself. He barely acknowledged the tears that were streaming down his face. His body wouldn't move but his mouth was on autopilot, saying everything he thought he should say. He felt Guy nudge him, taking over in comforting Tenten and in turn, Lee himself.
"Tenten," Guy said firmly, "we have to make sure that you're alright too. What happened?"
"I..." She started to come back to reality, blinking away her tears. "I heard all the commotion. I knew that you guys were coming to save me. I had to show those guards what's what since they didn't want to let me go." Tenten turned to look at Hinata who still stood apart from everyone else, her guards Kiba and Shino flanked her. "It was her that convinced them to let me pass. Neji's cousin."
Guy draped his arms over the shoulders of his adoptive children. He would have adopted Neji too if Hiashi didn't disallow it. "Let's go. She probably wants to see her cousin but we're crowding around." He led the two away, allowing Hinata to finally come forth.
"Big Brother Neji..." Her voice was hardly louder than a whisper. Her whole world was torn upside down. Her father did this.
Finally, the paramedics took Neji away and put him into the back of an ambulance.
"Captain Kakashi," Naruto sidled up to his superior. "What do we do now?" Both Hiashi and Neji were taken away as well as many of the Hyuga members who had taken direct part in this debacle. "What about her?" He gestured towards Hinata who looked as pale as a ghost.
"Aside from Hiashi, she's next of kin," Kakashi told him. "Drive her to the hospital after questioning her about what happened. I'll go speak with Tenten."
Naruto dipped his head. "Yes sir!"
As officers darted around the courtyard to clean up the mess, Lee found himself by Sakura's side again. He didn't know what to say right now. Neji was on his way to get treated and Tenten was being questioned. Guy Sensei was helping where he could, clearly trying to keep himself busy or else he was going to lose it. He wanted to hurt someone, that much was true. So did Lee.
How could they do this to his family?
"Lee?" He felt Sakura's fingertips press into his arm. He promptly responded by slipping his hand into hers. She didn't have any words of encouragement to pass. This was a really hard time for all of them. Instead she leaned against Lee's frame and closed her eyes. "About your question..."
Lee had almost forgotten what his heart felt like in his own chest. He could feel it now, rattling against his ribcage. "You do not have to answer now," he told her.
"I promised you," she insisted. "I don't want to make myself into a liar." She used the very same turn of phrase Lee used frequently. He relented. "Life is short," Sakura realized. It could very well be Lee accompanying Neji on a stretcher. "I... Know it's too soon."
"Sakura, you do not have to—"
"I'm not finished." Her words were firm yet gentle. "I can make my own choices and I choose to accept." She opened her eyes and looked up at him. "I'll be your girlfriend, Lee. But let's take it slow and see where it goes."
"O-of course." Lee's face was flush. The mixture of emotions brewing inside of him made him as stiff as a statue.
Love for Sakura.
Love for Tenten.
Love for Neji.
His whole world.
They will be okay.
Lee tightened his hand around Sakura's. There was no use standing around anymore. "Let us go home, Sakura."
