09: The Shimmering Beast
Silco kicked open the laboratory door with a ferocity that startled even his most hardened crew. His usual composure was gone, replaced by raw, parental desperation.
"Singed!" he bellowed, his voice echoing through the room as he carried Jinx in his arms. Behind him, one of his men struggled to keep up, Naruto's limp form draped over his shoulders.
Silco moved swiftly, laying Jinx down on one of the metal tables. "Put him there," he ordered the goon, nodding to the table beside hers. Once the boy was in place, Silco spun toward the others. "Get out. I don't care if Sevika's busy—she's in charge until I'm done here. Now go."
The men didn't hesitate. They left without a word, the door slamming shut behind them.
"Singed!" Silco roared again, his patience snapping.
"I'm here," the doctor finally said, emerging from the shadows of the backroom. His calm demeanour contrasted starkly with Silco's panic. But the moment Singed's gaze fell on the two figures on the tables, his eyes gleamed with something between fascination and admiration. "Marvellous…" he whispered.
"Marvellous?" Silco snapped, his voice sharp and dangerous.
Singed stepped closer, his hands already working to secure the patients to the tables. "Yes, their injuries are severe," he said, fastening the final strap. "But there is… something extraordinary."
Silco glared at him. "You think I can't see that?!"
Singed ignored the outburst, his focus on Naruto. "The boy," he began, "he was shot. Yet the bullet stopped mere millimetres from his heart… and was expelled from his body. I don't know how, but his body rejected the intrusion." He straightened and turned to Silco. "He will need a blood transfusion."
Singed moved to a cabinet, pulling out two thin folders. "Fortunately," he continued, "I discovered last time that Jinx is a universal donor. If we act quickly, her blood may save them both."
"Then do it," Silco growled, his tone brooking no argument.
Singed paused, pulling open another drawer. "The process," he said slowly, "will be… demanding. Perhaps even too much for their bodies. Death, in this case, might be a mercy."
"Mercy?" Silco thought, disgusted by the very idea. His jaw tightened as he spat, "They can take it. Do what needs to be done."
Singed nodded, retrieving a syringe filled with a glowing substance that seemed to hum with an eerie light. Silco eyed it warily, unfamiliar with the concoction.
Singed's voice softened. "Are you prepared to lose them?" he asked, a hint of something almost empathetic in his tone.
The question hit Silco like a punch to the gut. He opened his mouth, but no words came. His resolve wavered as he turned to Jinx. She began to sputter, her chest heaving as she struggled to speak.
"Jinx?" Silco leaned in, desperate to catch her words.
Her voice was faint, broken. "H-Help… N-N-Naru…" she whispered before falling unconscious again.
Silco's heart clenched. He felt a weak tug on his coat and turned to see Naruto, his pale fingers gripping the fabric with what little strength he had left.
"S-S-Save… her…" Naruto rasped, his voice barely audible. Then his arm fell limp, sliding off Silco's jacket as he collapsed fully onto the table.
Silco stood frozen between the two. His children. His responsibility. "They won't die," he said firmly, more to himself than anyone else. "They can't." Leaning down, he pressed a kiss to Jinx's forehead and gently placed Naruto's arm back onto the table. A small, rare smile crossed his lips as he looked at them both. "They were forged in bedrock. They'll survive. They must."
"I understand," Singed said, his voice breaking the moment. He pulled a chair close and placed it behind Silco. "And as one parent to another, I'm doing this for your own sanity."
Before Silco could react, he felt the sharp prick of the syringe in his neck. His body betrayed him, slumping forward as the concoction worked through his veins.
Singed caught him, guiding him into the chair. "I, too, once had a daughter," he murmured, his voice distant and pained.
Silco's vision blurred, his head growing heavy. The last thing he saw were the two figures on the tables—Naruto and Jinx—before the darkness claimed him. His final thought echoed in his fading consciousness.
The trio—Ezreal, Vi, and Caitlyn—trudged through the sprawling yard of the Kiramman estate, their movements slow and laboured. The weight of the night hung heavy on their shoulders, punctuated by the sharp sting of their injuries. Caitlyn leaned heavily on both Vi and Ezreal, her left leg unable to bear her weight due to a deep gash inflicted by an explosion.
"I know you're worried about your sister, but she's alive," Ezreal said softly, breaking the tense silence. He glanced over at Vi, his blue eyes warm despite the sweat, grime, and streaks of blood matting his blonde hair. "He saved her."
Vi's lips twitched into something between a grimace and a smile. She kept her gaze ahead, her tone steady but tinged with emotion. "With Naruto there… I have no doubt." She hesitated for a moment before continuing. "He's always been strong. To survive what he had to…" Her voice trailed off.
Caitlyn and Ezreal exchanged a concerned look. It was rare for Vi to sound vulnerable, even rarer for her to open up about her past.
Vi clenched her fists as she pressed on, the words spilling out as though they'd been buried for too long. "He wasn't born in Zaun. He doesn't know where he comes from, but when he woke up, it was in chains. They made him perform—entertain rich folk like you," she said bitterly, shooting a glance at Caitlyn. "He has every reason to hate humans, every reason to burn it all down. But because of Powder, he found us. Found family." Her voice softened. "He became like a brother to me."
As Vi finished speaking, they arrived at the balcony leading to Caitlyn's room. The Kiramman estate loomed around them, its grandeur a stark contrast to the grit and chaos of Zaun.
"I'll go up first and pull Caitlyn up," Ezreal offered, his tone light despite the tension.
Vi gave a curt nod, her focus shifting to Caitlyn, who groaned in discomfort as she tried to keep her injured leg steady.
"How you holding up, Cupcake?" Vi asked, her nickname for Caitlyn carrying a rare gentleness.
Caitlyn managed a weak smile, her voice strained but steady. "It's fine. Just need to lie down for a second… catch my breath."
"Almost there," Vi promised, her eyes tracking Ezreal as he hoisted himself up onto the balcony and extended a hand down toward them.
It took a few tense minutes to manoeuvre Caitlyn up gently, with Ezreal pulling and Vi supporting from below. Once inside, they barely had time to catch their breath. Caitlyn collapsed onto her bed, exhausted, while Ezreal leaned against the wall, brushing debris off his torn tunic.
The brief reprieve shattered as the bedroom doors were kicked open. Lady Kiramman stormed in, her rifle raised and ready, the barrel trained on them.
The trio froze.
"Er…" Vi began, his hands half-raised.
"Auntie, wait!" Ezreal voice broke through, alarmed.
"Mum?!" Caitlyn added, her shock evident as she tried to sit up, her injury forgotten in the moment.
Silco sat at the bar with a one-armed Sevika by his side and Jinx on other side of the bar with Sevika's arm before her.
"You know if you want I could really jazz this out." Jinx offered as she played with her shoulder length hair.
"Just tweak up the balance kid." Sevika grunted.
Jinx just stuck her tongue. "Boring but fine this is a favourite to Naruto anyway."
The bar itself was practically empty apart from a few of Silco's crew.
Naruto stood in the middle of the room.
"Jinx can you pass me a wrench?" Naruto hollered.
With outlooking she reached to her side and launch a wrench at blonde's face.
Silco's eyes narrowed as the spinning wrench came to a skidding to a halt mid-air before began to orbit him like Runeterra went around their sun.
Silco and Sevika spotted static sparking off the boy while the clothes felt like they we be tugged on gently.
'It's the metal.' Silco realised as he glanced toward Jinx and the metal arm rattling along the bar.
Naruto giggled to himself as the wrench began to follow to his arms movements before showing off his control placed the wrench into Jinx's awaiting hand.
Silco's mind was already counting the uses of this ability shown by the fourteen-year-old, before he stood up and crossed the room.
Naruto narrowed his gaze at Silco as he approached.
Silco moved forward and placed a hand on the boy's shoulder. He felt the blonde tense. "Well done."
Two little words… to Silco meant more much more to Naruto.
Only one adult ever gave the blonde praise before today and it was Vander.
'With his past his trust in people has been shaken' the man thought as he saw a light behind the blondes' eyes before it was covered up. "Soon enough you will be moving buildings but be careful with who you show… Mages aren't too welcome in these parts or Piltover."
"Wait I'm a mage?" Naruto asked. "But I'm not human?"
"Humans aren't only mages." Silco paused as he glanced over to Jinx as she tinkered. "Your Vastaya, maybe your tribe had the arcane in their veins." Silco shrugged.
Naruto nodded in understanding.
"What is your goal?" Silco asked.
"Goal?"
"Goal and objective, what do you want to do with life."
"Well help you make Zaun a reality."
"Ha!" Silco barked. "No that's my dream… What do you want?"
Naruto paused for a second and glanced over Jinxy as she truned the tool in her hands.
'The same hands that freed me.' He thought before Vi's smirking face appeared in his mind. He looked up at Silco as he frowned.
"To become the man with most freedom in the world."
"Really now…" Silco paused "Well to be free you need power don't you think."
"Obviously but I will become so strong, nothing can hurt us again."
"Us?"
Naruto eyes glanced to Jinx on instinct, and Silco saw it but chose not to say anything else.
"Just remember this Naruto… No tree can grow to the heavens. Unless its roots reach down into hell."
Naruto tilted his head to the side unsure of the meaning behind the man's words.
"You will get it as you get older.
The blonde stared at Silco before nodding. "Cool," Naruto hummed before he looked past Silco. "Hey, Jinx you finished yet, wanna head to the scrapyard and scavenge for some parts I wanna build a railgun." The boy said as he waved over to the girl.
Jinx didn't look up right away as she kept screwing, tightening one last bolt before she looked up with a grin. "Done, perfectly balanced like all things should be," she giggled before looking at the blonde. "Give me one second." Jinx said before running off to the back.
As she came back the pair left out the front door together.
"What was you first plan?" Sevika said as she eyed the interaction.
"Was gonna shoot him to see if he could block bullets but maybe save that for another day,"
"Cold… or are you just saying that for me?"
"I have no idea what you mean… Don't you have collections to be running."
Sevika rolled her eyes and nodded before taking her own leave.
"The children of Zaun deserve more than there Piltover's run off… By Blisters & Bedrock." He said to himself as he poured himself Vander's old favourite.
What do you think their talking about?" Ezreal asked as he sat leaning back against Caitlyns bed while Vi laid on with her head off the edge.
"She's the daughter of a councilwoman?" Vi asked ignoring the question.
"Erm Yeah did you not now that?"
"Clearly," she snarked "I thought she was some rookie goodie two- shoes Enforcer."
"She does give off that vibe I know." Ezreal laughed "Yeah she a Lady of noble birth, blue blooded if you will."
Vi went silent.
"Don't let it change how you see her." Ezreal offered. "She is not her last name and over this little adventure this is the most fun she has had ever. You can see it on her face."
Vi just nodded smiling at the whiskerless blonde. "Maybe you're not so bad for a pair Topsiders."
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"Take what as a compliment?" Caitlyn's voice came from the doorway.
"My dad might have some of your clothes from your last stay here… and you can borrow mine while we get those cleaned." Caitlyn said with an anxious smile.
"Why?" Ezreal said as he recognised his friend's tone. "What's going on."
"We meet with the council in three hours." She responded.
"Goddamnit Caitlyn." Ezreal muttered as Vi looked on in disbelief.
"Vi of Zaun, let me introduce you to Caitlyn Kiramman."
"Isn't that the name of a council member?"
"Th-"
"My Mother is Cassandra Kiramman leader of House Kiramman." Caitlyn introduced.
IV lines joined the pair as blood began to flow into Naruto's body. Singed stood beside Jinx, holding a syringe fitted with five shimmering vials of his concoction. As he administered the injection, Jinx's eyes jolted open, her vision blurred and unfocused.
Two vials drained.
Jinx's veins began to burn with a vivid, glowing purple. The searing pain erupted through her body, forcing a guttural scream from her throat. Her gaze darted to the door, her mind a chaotic blur of sensations and fears.
The door creaked open, and she saw them—Violet and Naruto. But not as they were now. Vi stood there as her teenage self, staring off into the distance. She spoke softly, her voice carrying an eerie calm.
"You know, Powder, you're stronger than you think."
"Vi?" Jinx whispered, her voice trembling as the shimmer's fire clawed its way further up her arm.
Beside Vi stood Naruto, younger as well. He smiled warmly, though a dark stain blossomed across his shirt where a bullet had struck him. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth, his expression oddly serene.
The scene twisted. Vi's form contorted, transforming into her present-day self. But this version held Jinx's pistol, its barrel aimed at the back of Naruto's head.
"I'm so sorry, Powder," Vi murmured, her voice filled with anguish.
"No! No! NO! Vi! Wait, please! Wait, Vi!" Jinx pleaded, tears streaming down her face as the shimmer coursed up her neck, spreading its unrelenting fire.
Vi pulled the trigger. The gunshot echoed like thunder, and in a puff of smoke, Caitlyn appeared. She clutched Vi's favourite teddy bear the way Powder once had, her expression unreadable.
"No! Don't, Naruto!" Jinx screamed, her voice cracking under the weight of desperation. Tears mixed with the shimmer that now spilled from her mouth, each drop a symbol of her torment.
"I understand that this must be painful," Jinx heard. But it wasn't Caitlyn's voice. It was Singed's, cold and detached.
The shimmer burned its way deeper, dragging Jinx further into her torment. In the physical world, her body convulsed violently under the serum's effects. Singed, ever the observer, noted the shimmer-infused blood flowing through the IV into Naruto. His eyes gleamed with morbid fascination.
"Excellent," he muttered, changing the syringe's needle and preparing another dose.
Jinx twitched uncontrollably as Singed injected her in the side of the neck. "I can see you have some fight in you, girl. That's good," he mused, his voice cold. "Because I'm afraid it's only going to get worse."
Three vials drained.
Across the room, Naruto began to spasm. Steam hissed from his gunshot wound as it cauterized itself, the shimmer forcing his body to adapt. His veins bulged with the same purple glow, his muscles writhing in protest. He convulsed under the restraints, the room trembling with a low, ominous hum.
Singed hesitated. The tremors in the room weren't just from the shimmer's effects. Arcane energy radiated from Naruto, lashing out chaotically. The electromagnetic waves warped the air, causing glass to vibrate and furniture to creak under the strain.
Inside Naruto's mind, the blonde waded through endless darkness. Cold water surged around his legs, pulling him deeper into its suffocating embrace.
'It's so cold,' he thought, gritting his teeth as he pressed forward.
Voices echoed in the void, relentless and cruel.
"Put a collar on this one."
"250… Do I hear 275 for this mythical creature?"
"Filthy vermin! You should be grateful I bought you."
"Nothing but a circus freak."
"You will be brought to heel!" A whip cracked, sharp and biting.
Each word pierced him like a dagger, dredging up memories he had buried long ago. The darkness shifted, and Naruto saw his reflection—himself as a small teenager. His body was riddled with bulging purple veins, a grotesque reminder of his suffering.
Pain flared again, and he doubled over. A shadow fell over him, and a small hand reached down. He looked up to see Powder, her young face twisted in anger.
"You couldn't save my family after everything we did for you!" she screamed, aiming a gun at his face.
Powder's form morphed into Vander's towering figure. His expression was one of betrayal. "I took you in, and this is how you repay me? You couldn't even protect my daughter." His words dripped with venom.
In the real world, Singed clung to a table as the tremors intensified. Naruto's arcane abilities lashed out, an uncontrollable storm of energy responding to the shimmer's assault on his body. A nearby cabinet collapsed, crushed into a twisted ball of metal.
Singed steadied himself, his clinical detachment unwavering. "I suppose I'll have to put him to sleep," he muttered, quickly mixing a sedative into the shimmer solution.
With calculated precision, he injected two more doses directly into Naruto. The boy's convulsions slowed, his body sagging against the restraints.
"I wonder what kind of monsters you are inside," Singed mused, his tone both curious and unnerving.
In Naruto's mind, Vander's words dissolved into nothingness, replaced by the echo of Doctor's detached voice. The darkness swallowed him whole once more, leaving only silence.
As his innate power receding as metal room stabilised once more. Singed let out breath he hadn't realised he was holding as two adults young as they were cried out in pain as they adapted to the shimmer in their veins.
The normal faces were in attendance, addressing the bridge massacre of enforcers from the early hours.
"Corruption on Sheriff Marcus, but what could they offer him that he did not already have.
Ezreal snorted.
"It's not what they offered him." Caitlyn voiced after glaring at Ezreal as her, Vi and Ezreal walked into the council chamber escorted by guardians (enforcers who guard the council exclusively). "If you want to know anything further you can ask him when he wakes from hospital."
All eyes turned to the new entries.
"It was what he had to lose."
Cassandra stood up. "Councillors my daughter has a unique insight into the ongoing situation."
"Thank you," Officer Kiramman said before turning to the rest of the council. "Councillors, this is Vi… She was born in the Undercity."
The room eyes all fell on Vi as she refused to back down, be seen as lesser.
"Even though we've failed her in countless ways. She risked everything to show what life really is like down there." Caitlyn said with conviction.
"She's right." Ezreal stepped forward, "People are starving and sick down their."
"Ravaged by shimmer, and the people are prayed upon by slumlords and living in constant fear that they will bend to the whims of crime lords." Caitlyn continued before eyeing the rest of the council. "One man holds the reigns of all the undergrounds criminal activities… Silco."
"We have done investigations into Silco… there has been no such evidence of such organisation." Councillor Bolbok said.
"And who led these investigations." Caitlyn stated sending the metallic man a look as the name Marcus escaped his mouth.
"What does this Silco even want from us?" Jace said after glancing at his nearby council woman Melanie.
"He believes the Undercity should be independent, calling it the nation of Zaun, an Undercity of Glass and Iron."
The council glanced around at each other before Jayce placed a grenade on the table.
"What about this, while you were down there did spot anyone that could have made these."
"No, um well." Caitlyn said shakily while glancing at Vi as she took her hand.
"Her name is Jinx." Vi said as she stepped forward.
"And this Jinx has the gemstone."
"Then we go in by force." Jayce said as he stood up from his chair.
"That could trigger war." Mel said from her seat.
"And it wont be as easy as you're picturing." Ezreal spoke up as he looked at one of his oldest friends.
"And there are good people down there." Caitlyn came to defence of Vi's people.
"Some bad ones too know doubt." Councilor Hoskel dismissed.
Ezreal and Vi both looked vexed.
One for the dig the other.
"Don't you dare speak about good people." Ezreal snapped, "I know what your brother did so don't act like you're better than anyone."
The noble's son shut up the greedy councillor.
"Now even if you wanted to invade Shimmer can be a powerful equaliser." Ezreal continued.
"We have HexTech."
"You've managed to weaponize HexTech?" Ezreal said his jaw dropping slightly.
"What happened to you." Caitlyn asked her brother figure.
"We've been talking about talking for weeks now." Jayce with evident frustration building in his voice. "Hell, they're still cleaning the blood off the bridge. When do we say enough is enough?"
"Yo don't know War…true war, not like I do." Mel countered his passion with a calm demeanour. "There must be a diplomatic solution."
"She's right of course." Solas said with a shake of his head.
A quiet settled around the table.
"What you want to negotiate with him?" Vi said affronted by such a choice.
"It may be the only way to avoid further bloodshed." Cassandra spoke to the girl that put her daughter in danger.
"Further bloodshed?" Vi snapped looking pissed off. "Two of Silco's men did that to the bridge. The same two blew up a building and stole your precious gemstone a week ago."
Vi stepped into the middle of the room. "This is insane did you learn nothing? You can't talk to Silco, he hates you and everything you stand for. In his twisted mind it's your boots on the neck of Undercity keeping it from fresh air."
"Guardians please escort them out." Solas said as he stood from his own desk. 'I shall not be spoken to by my lesser he thought.
"Forget it, I remember where your fancy damn door is." Vi said before storming through the middle of Ezreal and Caitlyn.
Caitlyn turned to her mother who nodded as she went after the girl from Undercity.
Ezreal stayed addressed the council once more.
"I hope you all know what you're doing if you're willing to negotiate with man who poisoned his own people." He said before turning on his heel and leaving after the girls.
Pink eyes snapped awake with a gasp Jinx sat up unrestricted. Giggling to herself she felt great like some had lit a fire in her veins.
Looking to her right she spotted Silco slumped over.
She frowned and went toward him only to feel some resistance.
'What the?' the girl thought as she saw Naruto holding her hand while he snored on the table adjacent.
'Naruto!' she thought in shock before smile drifted to her lips.
Quickly moving toward the boy she nimbly climbed onto of the table and straddled the blonde. She spotted his coat and revolver on the side table next to the blondes and his sword leaning up against the wall.
The girl shook her head and focused on the blonde. 'He didn't leave me.' She thought to herself before she giggled to herself, her pink eyes studied the blondes face, her hand tracing the outlines of his whiskers.
'Are they thicker than before?' she pondered as she even noticed that his fangs were slightly more pronounced.
As pink eyes drunk in the vision beneath her, every freckle, ever scar and imperfection and she thought one thing.
'Perfect.'
Her mind drifted to her last memories before total darkness took her on the bridge.
Ekko had her pinned as she pulled the pin of her chomper grenade.
As metal bullet fell from the blondes back covered in static before he fell.
Tears spilled from her eyes from the sight of Naruto face first in a pool of his own blood.
Ekko was shouting something she couldn't hear a thing.
As the grenade rolled Ekko's grip slackened.
"Shit!" Ekko shouted.
Naruto appeared right in front the pair reaching out for Ekko. "Missed you Little Man." The blonde said as he took hold of the younger man's dungarees and threw hims ff the side of the bridge, before covering Jinx and covering them both in an electromagnetic shield bubble just before the grenade went off.
The force of the grenade ripped through the bubble and had sent the blonde flying off of Jinx's body.
The shield as hastily as it was made took most of the fury which allowed the pair to survive.
Pink eyes snapped out of memory lane Naruto began to stir.
Pink slit eyes opened up to see pink eyes staring back at him.
Taking a second Naruto focused and saw familiar features. "Jinx?" he said before he realised their position.
She sat making sure to put all her weight on him as she ground down in his lap. "You saved me Mr Hero."
"I mean…"
"And you died."
"All most… I did stop the bullet as soon as I could."
Jinx didn't really care, as she took hold of his bloody shirt and lifted the blonde slightly. "You promised you weren't going to leave me." She said, "So I was ready to go when you went." She said while leaning down slightly.
"I know." Naruto said as leant up slightly.
"Never again." She said before her face stopped her lips leaving a slight gap between the pair.
"Nothing will ever chain me down from protecting you." Naruto said before closing the distance.
The lips met and in both of their shimmered altered minds they were feeling the purest of ecstasy as they kiss had turned into a heavy lip lock with duelling tongues.
Hands went around her waist and up her back.
Hands went through his hair and pinned him to the table.
The stopped to breath but then the whiskered face man smirked before attacking the bluenettes neck with kisses and soft bites from her collar to her neck.
Jinx gasped as she looked up eyes wide open as she continued to grind her hips against Naruto's. 'More. More off this,' She thought as she felt his hands on her hips.
'Mine.' He thought in lustful shimmering bliss. He pulled away from her neck and claimed her lips once before she lightly bit his lower lip.
"Mine." She said what he was thinking.
"Hot."
"Only for you."
"Ehem..." A new voice coughed interrupting the pair.
The pair reacted instantly.
Jinx grabbed Naruto's revolver as Naruto moved his left from Jinx to the air as his static was generated and his sword flew to the blonde's hand.
As he caught Jinx twisted in his lap training the hand cannon and firing as the sword came up by her side.
A glass beaker shattered right next to Singed as he looked at the young adults. "I'll add that to his tab."
They halted their actions once they realised it was just Singed.
'His tab?' Naruto's senses came back as he spotted Silco unconscious to their right.
"Jinx please tell you swiped back the gemstone?" the blonde asked.
Jinx just giggled before crawling off the blonde in the slowest possible still teasing the blonde before giggling to herself as she walked toward Silco and searched his pockets till she found the gemstone.
"Alright… I guess thanks are in order Doc for fixing us up." Naruto said as he cracked his neck. "Let the old man know were alive will you. We've got things to scheme don't we Jinx."
Jinx began to giggle once more before her face turned manic as her pinks shone in the darkness. "I aim to misbehave." She said as she tilted her head as she stared at the blonde.
"Oh, I aim to misbehave." He said while matching her energy.
Singed looked on at the shimmer effects coursing through the pairs veins as Naruto's grins was wild, untamed mania matched Jinx's manic craze. 'Interesting, the shimmer has also altered them not just on physical level.'
He watched the pair gather their things and simply leave as if they hadn't nearly died.
'I have a feeling I may regret aiding those two.' He worried for but a moment.
