Rick leaned against the kitchen counter, sipping his coffee while Alexis sat at the island, scrolling through her phone. He cleared his throat, drawing her attention.
"Hey, Dad. Something on your mind?" Alexis asked
"Yeah, I wanted to talk to you about something before the move. I was thinking… you might want a bit more privacy."
Alexis tilted her head, intrigued. "What do you mean?"
"If you're open to it, you could move down into my bedroom on the first floor," Rick offered. "That way, you wouldn't need to share a bathroom with a four-year-old."
Alexis's face lit up with excitement. "Really? You'd let me do that?"
"Of course," Rick said, grinning. "You've earned it." Rick couldn't help but smile as Alexis's enthusiasm bolstered his confidence about the upcoming changes. It felt like everything was falling into place. "Plus, you can redecorate it however you want to make it your own."
"Sold," Alexis said with a laugh. "Thanks, Dad. That'll be perfect."
Rick nodded, pleased. "Good. I'm glad you like the idea."
The next day, Rick and Kate sat together on the couch, the sunlight streaming through the loft's large windows. Rick turned to her, his hand resting on hers.
"So, I've been thinking about the move," Rick began.
Kate raised an eyebrow. "That sounds ominous."
He chuckled. "Not ominous, just practical. I want us to take my mother's old bedroom on the second floor. It's big, has an en suite bathroom, and it's perfect for us. Plus, this will allow us to be closer to Romey if he needs anything in the middle of the night."
Kate tilted her head, considering. "That makes sense. Will Romey be moving to the guestroom then?"
"Actually, I want him to move into Alexis's old will take my old bedroom," Rick explained.
Kate's mind wandered for a moment, she had been hesitant to let anyone into her life, and now here she was, planning a shared future with him and her son.
Rick continued, "Alexis' bedroom is bigger than the current guest room, and it gives Romey more space to play. That would leave one guest room for when Jim or my mother stay over."
Kate smiled softly. "You've thought of everything."
"There's more," Rick added. "The second floor has that living room space. I was thinking we could turn it into a shared space—an office for you and a play area for Romey. We could even set up a big screen for movie nights."
Kate hesitated, her brow furrowing. "Rick, this is a lot. Are you sure we're not upsetting your household?"
Rick squeezed her hand, his voice steady. "Alexis and I are ready for a change, and we want this. We're building something together—a home for all of us."
Her eyes softened, and she leaned into him. "Okay, but I hate you spending all of this money for us to move in."
Rich shook his head, "These renovations won't even put a dent in the advance Black Pawn gave me on my first Nikki Heat book. And I wouldn't have that book without you."
Kate rolled her eyes but relented and said, "Okay if you're sure."
Rick leaned in and kissed Kate, "I've never been more sure of anything in my life, Kate. I love you and Romey and want you to feel at home in the loft."
Kate smiled softly, her hand resting on his cheek. "You already make us feel at home, Rick. This move just makes it official."
Rick Castle stood in the guest room doorway, arms crossed, surveying the plain walls and outdated furniture. Beside him, Romey tugged at his sleeve, eyes wide with curiosity.
"So, buddy," Rick said, crouching to Romey's level. "What kind of room do you want?"
Romey tapped his chin, his little face serious. "I want a superhero room with Spiderman!"
Rick chuckled. "A superhero lair it is. But what else do you need?"
Romey thought for a moment. "A desk, so I can draw Spiderman. A toy box for my action figures. And a place to read!"
"Got it," Rick said with a grin. "Let's make it the coolest room ever."
Rick, Kate, and Romey visited a high-end furniture store the next day. Romey darted through the aisles, pausing to marvel at a loft bed painted in Spiderman's signature red and blue. Instead of a ladder, it had wide steps on the right side that doubled as storage drawers, with a desk and bookshelf underneath.
"This one!" Romey shouted, pointing eagerly. "It's perfect!"
Kate examined the price tag and raised an eyebrow. "Rick, this bed costs more than my first car."
Rick smirked. "You can't put a price tag on Romey's happiness."
Kate rolled her eyes and continued to follow her boys around the store.
They picked out a Spiderman rug, framed superhero art, and a plush reading chair. Romey insisted on a toy box with a comic book print, and Rick added a lava lamp because Romey thought it was cool—Alexis had one just like it, and he had always admired it.
Before the new furniture arrived, Rick enlisted Esposito and Ryan to help clear out the old guestroom. As they lugged a particularly heavy dresser down the hall, Ryan groaned. "I thought I signed up to play Madden, not to be a mover."
"Consider it cross-training," Rick quipped. "Plus, you're getting paid for high-end furniture."
Ryan raised an eyebrow. "You're giving me this?"
"Sure," Rick said with a grin. "It's either that or donation."
Esposito chuckled as they set the dresser down in the hallway. "Can I call dibs on the nightstands?"
"Done," Rick replied, dusting off his hands. "Now, let's keep this moving before Kate sees us slacking and recruits us for more."
The following weekend, with the room finally clear, Rick stood in the doorway, clapping his hands together. "Now," he declared, "we paint."
Romey's eyes lit up as Rick handed him a small roller. "You get to help, buddy."
Together, Rick, Kate, and Romey began painting the walls a deep blue to mimic the night sky. Romey was determined to do his part, but his roller quickly went rogue, leaving streaks on his clothing and splotches on his face and hair.
"Romey!" Kate exclaimed, laughing as she surveyed the colorful mess. "Rick, how are you going to clean this up?"
Rick shrugged a mischievous glint in his eyes. "I'll call professional painters tomorrow. This was all about the fun."
By the time they finished, Romey was a walking masterpiece, covered head to toe in paint. "I did a good job, right?" he asked, his grin wide.
"You did amazing," Rick said, pulling him into a hug despite the mess. "Let's get you cleaned up."
Kate led Romey to the bathroom, gently scrubbing his hands, face, and hair as streaks of blue and specks of paint swirled in the bath water. "You're my little artist," she said softly, kissing his damp forehead. As she washed the paint from his hair, Romey looked up at her, his expression serious.
"Mommy, can I tell you something?" he asked.
Kate smiled, rinsing the last bit of paint from his curls. "Of course, sweetheart."
Romey shifted in the tub, sending ripples through the water. "I wish Rick was my dad."
Kate froze for a moment, her heart tightening. She crouched down to look him in the eye. "You do?"
"Yeah, he's so nice to me and makes me laugh," Romey said earnestly. "And he's really good at making cool rooms."
Kate's throat tightened with emotion. She cupped his cheek, her voice soft. "Rick loves you very much, you know that, right?"
Romey nodded. "Do you think he wants to be my dad?"
Kate hugged him tightly, brushing a kiss against his temple. "I think he already feels like he's part of our family. And I know he loves being with you."
Romey beamed, his face lighting up. "I love him too, Mommy."
Kate smiled, her heart swelling with love. "Then we're pretty lucky, aren't we?"
Romey nodded, wrapping his arms around her neck. "The luckiest!"
Rick arranged for painters to come in and paint the three bedrooms that would soon have new occupants. Once the paint dried, the new furniture arrived, and a team of professionals quickly set up the furniture.
Once the furniture was in place, Rick and Alexis worked together to add the finishing touches, perfecting every detail. Rick carefully hung the framed superhero art in a neat row along one wall while Alexis positioned the lava lamp on the desk so it cast a colorful glow across the room. Together, they set up the plush reading chair and adjusted its angle to catch the best light from the window. Finally, they neatly organized the toy box in the corner, placing Romey's favorite action figures on top for easy access.
"It really came together," Alexis said, stepping back to admire their handiwork. "This room is fit for a true superhero."
Rick smiled his hands on his hips. "And it's not just any superhero—it's Romey's personal headquarters. He's going to love it."
Alexis glanced at her dad, a playful smirk on her face. "So, when are you going to make all of this official?"
Rick blinked. "Official?"
"You know," Alexis said, crossing her arms, "marry Kate."
Rick chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his neck. "One step at a time, kiddo. Moving in is the next step in my plan."
Alexis's face lit up. "I can't wait to have them around every day. It'll be great having another woman in the house now that Gram has moved out."
Rick's expression softened, and he pulled her into a hug. "We're building something pretty special, Alexis."
She nodded, her voice warm. "Yeah, we are."
That evening, Rick and Kate led Romey to the closed guest room door. "Are you ready to see your superhero lair?" Rick asked, his voice filled with excitement.
Romey nodded eagerly, bouncing on his toes. "Yes!"
Rick opened the door, and Romey's eyes widened in awe as he stepped inside. The deep blue walls, the framed superhero art, and the Spiderman loft bed with its steps and cozy desk underneath left him speechless. The reading nook, plush chair, and neatly arranged toy box completed the room.
"Wow!" Romey finally exclaimed, running to the bed and climbing up the steps. "It's perfect!"
Rick grinned, watching Romey explore. "Only the best for my little superhero. Rick knelt down and pulled out a small package from behind his back. "And for the final touch, Sir Romey, your very own superhero cape," he said, revealing a red cape with "Sir Romey" embroidered in bold letters. Romey gasped, throwing his arms around Rick. "Thank you, Rick!" Rick's heart swelled as he fastened the cape around Romey's shoulders. "Now you're ready to save the day.""
Romey turned and launched himself into Rick's arms, hugging him tightly. "Thank you for my new room. It's the best!"
Rick's heart swelled. "Anything for you, buddy."
That evening, Romey climbed into his new bed, the Spiderman blanket tucked snugly around him. "Goodnight, Mommy. Goodnight, Rick," he called down.
Kate kissed his forehead. "Goodnight, sweetheart."
Rick stood beside her, smiling. "Sleep tight, Spiderman."
Kate slipped her hand into Rick's as they turned off the lights. "You made him so happy," she whispered.
Rick leaned in, his voice low. "Seeing you both happy is all I want."
Kate smiled, pulling him toward the bedroom. "Let me show you how happy I am."
The door closed behind them, and the soft glow of the superhero decals illuminated the new room—a space filled with love, laughter, and the promise of a bright future.
The morning of moving day dawned crisp and clear, with the city bathed in golden sunlight. Kate stood in the middle of her apartment, hands on her hips, surveying the last of the boxes stacked near the door. Romey tugged at her hand, his wide eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Mommy, are we going to have dinner at Rick's?" he asked eagerly.
Kate smiled down at him and ruffled his hair. "You bet, buddy. Rick promised he'd make your favorite as soon as we're all settled in."
Just then, there was a knock at the door, and Rick's familiar voice called out. "Beckett moving crew reporting for duty!"
Kate opened the door to find Rick standing there with a coffee tray in one hand and a mischievous grin. Behind him, Alexis held a box of bagels, and the professional moving crew were already hauling in dollies for the heavier items.
Romey giggled, already reaching for Alexis. "Lex, can we play superheroes when we get to the loft?"
Alexis crouched to his level, her smile bright. "Of course, Sir Romey. But first, we've got to move all your superhero gear. Ready to help?"
Romey nodded enthusiastically, and soon, the team got to work. Rick directed traffic, ensuring each box and piece of furniture was carefully loaded into the moving van. Kate carried smaller items and kept an eye on Romey, who delighted in carrying his stuffed animals one by one as if they were precious cargo.
By late morning, they pulled up to the loft, and Rick swung the door open wide with a flourish. "Welcome home, Beckett family!" he declared.
Romey bounded upstairs as the movers carried up the boxes of all of his clothes and toys.. "My own superhero cave!" Romey exclaimed, rushing to the loft bed. "Look, Mommy! I can see everything from up here!"
Kate chuckled, placing her hands on her hips as she watched him climb. "Just don't jump off like you're Spiderman, okay?"
Rick came up behind her, resting his chin lightly on her shoulder. "I'm so glad you are both home." he murmured.
She nodded, leaning back against him and gave him a quick kiss. "Me too," she whispered, her voice tinged with contentment.
By evening, the loft had transformed into a cozy, bustling home. The aroma of freshly made pancakes lingered in the air, mixing with the faint, comforting scent of maple syrup. Romey was curled up on the couch with Mr. Fuzzy, giggling as he made the stuffed animal "fly" through the air. Kate stood in the kitchen, her heart full as she watched Rick and Alexis set the table, their playful banter filling the space with warmth. Dinner was simple but perfect—Romey's favorite, breakfast for dinner—complete with fluffy pancakes, crispy bacon, and fresh fruit.
Rick kept his promise and whipped up a stack of fluffy pancakes topped with whipped cream and strawberries for Romey. The group gathered around the table, their chatter and laughter filling the space.
"To new beginnings," Rick said, raising a glass of orange juice.
"And to family," Kate added, her eyes meeting his.
After dinner, Rick carried a sleepy Romey to his new room and tucked him in. Kate followed, smoothing his hair as he whispered, "I love our new home, Mommy."
"I do, too, baby," she replied, kissing his forehead.
Later that night, with Romey fast asleep, Kate and Rick stood by the loft's large windows, the city lights twinkling beyond.
"Thank you for this," Kate said softly, lacing her fingers with his.
Rick turned to her, his expression tender. "Thank you for saying yes."
As they stood in the quiet, wrapped in each other's warmth, Kate knew this wasn't just a move. It was the start of a new chapter, where they'd face everything together as a family.
