Chapter 56: Needed Conversations
Three days later, the boat docked safely after a small run-in with a giant squid guarding the island. The squid attacked the boat until Killer Bee, in perfect control and synchronization with the hachibi, was able to restrain the beast and allow them to disembark.
The island wasn't at all like what Namiko had pictured. It reminded her more of the Forest of Death but their guide from Kumo, Motoi, assured them that it was safe as Killer Bee had complete control over all the animals on the island. As long as Killer Bee was on the island, there was nothing to worry about.
Naruto was in awe of Killer Bee and instantly bonded with the fellow jinchuriki. Namiko looked over at Sasuke walking beside her with an irritated look on his face. "He's a little…much, isn't he?" she whispered to him, gesturing to Killer Bee.
"That's like saying Naruto is a little loud," muttered back Sasuke, "I've wished he was mute more than once…"
She gave a disapproving look but couldn't help the giggle that escaped her as she whispered to him, "Me too."
Motoi led them to a large building shaped like the hachibi with a waterfall not far behind it. "You Konoha shinobi may use this entire floor. There are more than enough rooms for all of you. The dining hall is downstairs; feel free to eat whenever you want."
As Motoi excused himself, Yamato stepped forward. "We'll meet up tomorrow at seven in the morning. Go ahead and pick whatever room you want, then you're free to rest or do whatever."
Namiko hid a yawn behind her hand. "Seven? Sometimes I feel like Yamato-taichou hates me."
"That was probably Gai's suggestion," said Naruto.
Gai groaned loudly as he stumbled into the closest room and practically fell into the bed.
"I somehow don't think so, Naruto-kun…" said Hinata, looking sympathetically toward Gai's door.
The next morning, Motoi gathered everyone near the waterfall. "This place is called the Waterfall of Truth."
"This is where you learned to control the hachibi?" asked Naruto excitedly, looking expectantly at Killer Bee.
"When it comes to controlling the hachibi, this is the first step, you see?" rhymed Killer Bee. He looked between the siblings, motioning to a circle of grass right below the waterfall. "Just sit down and close your eyes, and you'll meet yourself in no time."
Naruto was a little confused by his rhyme, but he turned to Namiko with a grin. "Me first!" he shouted as he jumped on the grassy patch, sat down cross-legged, and closed his eyes. He stilled just as he would if gathering nature energy for sage mode.
Namiko watched nervously, tugging on a loose strand of hair. Hinata walked up next to her, giving her hand a little squeeze, leaning in to whisper, "You'll be fine. You know he went ahead to make sure it was safe for you, but I don't think either of you will have any problems doing this. I have faith in you both."
Namiko nodded and continued watching as she leaned against Sasuke while holding Hinata's hand. They watched and waited for something to change or some sign of success.
A half-hour later, Naruto quietly stood up, grinning over his shoulder and giving a thumbs-up.
"It went well, I take it?" asked Yamato with a smile.
"That was easy!" Naruto jumped off the grassy circle, landing in front of Namiko and laying his hand on her shoulder. "You'll be fine! Two words of advice? Accept. It."
Namiko nodded anxiously before smiling apprehensively at Sasuke. "I guess it's my turn."
He caught her wrist as she turned to leave, running his thumb across the back of it. "You'll be fine. Hinata and I will both have eyes on you. I'll stop you if I need to."
She squeezed his hand before walking away, over the water and to the narrow strip of grass. 'I can do this, right? Naruto didn't even move the entire time he was there. I'm not in danger; Naruto wouldn't put me in danger, especially now. Okay, let's do this.'
She slowly sat on the soft grass, brushing her hands over the smooth blades before lying her hands in her lap. She took a slow, long breath and closed her eyes. She sat for a few minutes in the darkness, waiting for something to change. 'Naruto kept his eyes closed the entire time and said he saw something, but I don't see a thing! Maybe I'm doing this wrong? Maybe I should open my eyes. No, what if I screw everything up?' She let out a frustrated groan.
"Don't worry, you will screw everything up," said a voice from behind her head.
Namiko startled, opening her eyes with a gasp, turning quickly to find herself looking at a mirror version of herself. The doppelgänger's eyes were black with red pupil-less irises, her hair down, and more shockingly, not pregnant. "Wha—what is going on?" she asked bewildered.
"What are you talking about? I am you…the better you. The you that you want to be."
Namiko blinked. She stared at the darkened copy of herself—or whatever this version of herself was—and felt her breath hitch. "The better me? What does that even mean?" she asked cautiously, her voice wavering slightly.
The other Namiko smirked, tilting her head. "Oh, come on. Don't play dumb. You've felt it, haven't you? The weight of their expectations? The fear of messing it all up? Naruto, Sasuke, Hinata, Kurenai, Tsunade, everyone—you're scared of disappointing them. Of proving you're not good enough. Of failing."
Namiko flinched. The words struck too close to home, but she shook her head quickly. "That's not true! They love me. They believe in me."
The smirk grew sharper. "Do they? Or do they believe in the idea of you? The perfect little sister to the Hero of Konoha. The kunoichi who can disappear in the blink of an eye. The one Sasuke chose over everything else. The future mother of the next generation of Uchiha." The other Namiko leaned closer, her crimson irises glinting in the dim light. "Face it—you're terrified you're not enough for them."
Namiko's hands clenched in her lap. Her heart pounded, and she could feel a lump forming in her throat. "Stop it…" she whispered.
"Stop it? Why?" the other Namiko sneered, circling her slowly like a predator. "Because it's true? You've been hiding behind that smile for years, convincing yourself you can handle the pressure, the fear, the expectations. But deep down, you're afraid. Afraid they'll see through you. Afraid that one day, Naruto will look at you and see nothing but dead weight. That Sasuke will regret choosing you."
Namiko's breath caught, the lump in her throat growing tighter. "That's not true," she whispered, her voice trembling. "Naruto and Sasuke—they love me. They've told me. Over and over."
"Words," the other Namiko spat. "Empty words you cling to because you're too scared to face the truth. Do you really think you're strong enough to stand beside them? To protect them when they need you most?" She leaned in close, her voice dropping to a taunting whisper. "What happens when you fail? When you can't save them?"
"I won't fail!" Namiko shot to her feet, her chakra flaring instinctively. The energy rippled through the air, but the other Namiko didn't flinch. Instead, she laughed—a low, bitter sound.
"Won't you?" she said, crossing her arms. "Tell me, Namiko—what happens if Sasuke doesn't come back one day? If Naruto falls in battle? What happens if you can't stop it? If it's all your fault?"
Namiko's knees buckled, and she dropped back to the ground. Her hands shook as she clenched them into fists. The words pierced her like kunai, each one hitting the mark. The fear, the doubt—it was all there, bubbling beneath the surface, threatening to swallow her whole.
But then, through the storm of emotions, a memory surfaced. Naruto's hand on her shoulder, his confident grin as he said, "You'll be fine. Accept it."
Namiko swallowed hard, taking a shaky breath. Her voice was quiet but steady. "You're right," she admitted, her head lowering. "I am afraid. I'm terrified of failing them. Of not being enough, but…" She lifted her head, meeting the other Namiko's red gaze. "That fear doesn't define me. It doesn't control me."
The other Namiko frowned, her smirk faltering. "What are you—"
"I accept it," Namiko interrupted, her voice growing stronger. "I accept that I'm scared. I accept that people expect a lot from me. But that doesn't mean I'm weak. It means I care. It means I have something worth fighting for. And even if I mess up and fail—and I will fail—I'll get back up and keep trying. Because that's who I am."
The other Namiko froze, her form beginning to flicker like a candle in the wind. "No," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "You're lying to yourself. You're not strong enough."
Namiko smiled faintly, standing tall despite the weight on her shoulders. "Maybe not today. But I'm stronger than you think. And I'll keep getting stronger. For Naruto, for Sasuke, for everyone I care about. And for myself."
The other Namiko's form dissolved into shimmering light, and Namiko felt a rush of warmth flood her chest. The fear was still there, but it no longer felt suffocating. It was part of her—just one piece of the whole.
When she opened her eyes, the waterfall sparkled before her, and she heard Naruto's familiar laugh. "Woohoo! I told you it was a piece of cake!"
She tilted her head, chuckling softly as she got off the ground and returned to the others. "Well, I wouldn't call it a piece of cake, but it's done."
"You did it," Hinata said softly, her voice filled with admiration.
Namiko smiled, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "Yeah. I did. How long was I in there?"
"An hour," said Sasuke with a smirk that bordered on a smile as he wrapped his arm around her waist, squeezing her hip lightly. A simple expression that Namiko easily understood: he was proud of her.
"So, Octopops," began Naruto, "what's next? When do we gain control of the kyuubi?"
"Should we try controlling the kyuubi now?" asked Killer Bee before switching to his enka rap, "From this moment, I'm gonna be your instructor, so prepare yourself to suffer death and torture!"
Naruto pumped a fist into the air. "Yeah! Let's go!"
Namiko looked wide-eyed at Yamato and he gave her a sympathetic look. "Don't worry, I'm sure you're not in danger."
Sasuke narrowed his eyes as they all followed Naruto and Killer Bee. "If anything happens to her or the twins—"
"We're not going to let anything happen to her; that's why you and I both came, right?" said Hinata.
Sasuke breathed out forcefully. "Right."
They followed Killer Bee behind the waterfall and into a large temple-like structure. "This is where you'll fight the kyuubi."
"Fight the kyuubi?!" shouted Naruto and Namiko in unison.
"How are we supposed to to fight the kyuubi in here?" asked Naruto skeptically.
"And if you haven't noticed, I can't exactly fight at all right now!" said Namiko, holding her stomach protectively.
Killer Bee held up a hand to calm them as he led them to an ornate wall with a fearsome creature carved into the stone. "It's set up here so ya can speak with your biju in a special way. Inside this structure…ya hear what I say?"
"In there?" asked Naruto, looking up at the wall.
"Only the chosen can enter this place, to move forward put your head in this space," said Killer Bee, gesturing to the wide open mouth of the stone creature. "If you're a good man respected, no darkness in your heart detected, the door will open and you won't be rejected."
"Oh," said Namiko softly, "that's why we went to the Falls of Truth, to clear us from any darkness in our hearts."
"If there's darkness the doors don't part, the statue will separate your head from your heart! Those headless statues ya saw on your way here, are past jinchuriki whose hearts weren't sincere," explained Killer Bee.
Sasuke immediately looked at Namiko. "You're not doing this. It's too risky."
Namiko opened her mouth to speak, but Naruto slapped his hand on Sasuke's shoulder. "Sasuke, did you think I'd let my baby sister, especially my baby sister who is having two babies, put herself in harm's way?" He grinned at Namiko. "Your big bro has got this under control."
"Naruto-kun, I don't think—"
"It's okay, Hina, Bee said 'whose hearts weren't sincere', but when am I ever not sincere?" Naruto gave her a quick peck on the lips before walking over to the wall and pausing before sticking his head inside.
Everyone waited with bated breath before he screamed and squirmed around as if in pain, causing Yamato to quickly yank him out. Naruto just laughed. "Kidding! There was just a switch in there."
"Uzumaki Naruto!" yelled Namiko as she smacked his arm, hard, and Hinata did the same on his other arm.
He held up his hands in surrender. "Okay, okay, sorry…I couldn't resist!"
"I played that trick my first time too, those headless statues are broken just to scare you," laughed Killer Bee.
Namiko pursed her lips, crossing her arms over her stomach again as she glared at her brother. "Seriously? That was a jerk—" Her train of thought was cut off by the rumbling noise of stone on stone as a section of the wall opened up as a door.
Killer Bee walked over to the door. "You need to go in there, sit down, close your eyes, and focus, just like at the waterfall. Then you'll meet up with your biju."
"I was taught a drill once that let me see the kyuubi in my mind," said Naruto as he poked his head into the bright room.
"All jinchuriki can do that. This is a little different. Everyone follow me, and the two of you begin to see," said Killer Bee as he went inside the room and everyone trailed in after. "Do ya have the key for the kyuubi?"
The siblings both nodded and Yamato began to look worried. "So you have to undo the seal after all. What if they can't control it and the kyuubi fully manifests?"
"This place can trap the kyuubi until we get a new host, though that would be a worse outcome than most," explained Killer as he sat on the ground, gesturing for them to sit as well. "Alright then, I'm gonna shut the door behind me, and tell you how to deal with the kyuubi."
Naruto sat down in front of Killer Bee as the door closed, but Namiko looked at Sasuke for reassurance. "What if—"
Sasuke ran his thumb on the back of her wrist comfortingly. "This is important, but I'm not going to risk your life either. If anything looks the slightest bit off to Hinata or me, I'll pull you out via genjutsu. With the Mangekyo, it would be child's play."
Namiko nodded slowly and sat down next to Naruto. Killer Bee held out a fist to each of them. "The rules are simple: once you greet the kyuubi inside your mind, undo the seal. The two of you need to work together. Connect your fists and I'll walk you through it."
Naruto gave Namiko a confident grin. "We've got this, imouto. I won't let you down."
After Killer Bee had explained what they needed to do, the siblings shared chakra by connecting their fists and were transported to their shared mindscape.
Namiko felt the water and smelled the mustiness of the kyuubi's prison before she even opened her eyes. Naruto positioned himself between her and the kyuubi. "Evil glare as usual? Boring…"
"What are you two doing here? Why don't I sense the real you anymore?" demanded the kyuubi, raising his head.
"We're right here…right in front of your eyes," quipped Naruto as he reached up to yank off the paper seal on the bars of the kyuubi's cell.
"What are you plotting?"
Naruto pulled up his shirt, activating the key to the seal on his arm and slamming it into his stomach. The lock began opening but stopped halfway, causing Naruto to turn back to Namiko who was frozen in place. "Namiko, you've got to do this with me or it won't work."
Namiko swallowed nervously, her hand holding the edge of her shirt. "I—I don't want to hurt them…" she whispered.
Naruto gripped her shoulders firmly. "Octopops said we need to work together, and you need to trust Hinata and Sasuke to keep the three of you safe. You gotta trust me too. If you're not safe, I'm stopping too, ya know?"
"Right," she said as she took a deep breath and held it as she activated the key and pressed it onto her stomach.
The seal opened fully and the gates burst open as the kyuubi crashed through them, smacking Naruto back and Namiko ran for cover. Namiko let out the breath she was holding. "Grab his chakra with yours! Remember Killer Bee told us 'Only chakra can capture chakra.' Once we have all his chakra, he'll be under our control."
"Just leave this to me!" shouted Naruto as he charged toward the kyuubi.
Sasuke was watching Hinata like a hawk with his Sharingan, trying to see any minuscule facial expression that would tell him if Namiko and the babies were in danger. "Anything?"
"She's stable. She had a small surge in her chakra, which I figure is from her and Naruto-kun unlocking their seals, since his did the same moments before," Hinata explained, noticing his furrowed brow with her Byakugan. "I promise, I'll let you know if anything changes."
Sasuke reluctantly accepted the answer. He knew the Hyuuga loved Namiko like a sister and would easily risk her own life before Namiko could get a scratch on her. However, he couldn't shake the feeling of worry and nagging anxiety at letting Namiko do something so dangerous. She wasn't in physical danger, but that didn't make it any easier for him to accept.
"Wind Style, Rasen-Shuriken!" Naruto's attack struck the kyuubi dead center knocking him off his feet as it expanded to engulf his body.
"Let's finish this." Namiko let her Adamantine Sealing Chains fly out of her chest, wrapping firmly around the kyuubi's limbs and pinning him to the ground before disconnecting the chains from her body. "Now grab his chakra and pull! I don't know how long those will hold him."
"They're strong, it'll give us a while to talk."
'No way…it couldn't be,' thought Namiko as she and Naruto both turned to find the source of the voice.
"Kaa-chan? Is it really you?" asked Naruto, slowly stepping closer to her.
Kushina nodded enthusiastically. "Of course it is! Your father placed my chakra in each of you to activate whenever you tried to take control of the kyuubi. That way I could lend you a hand." She smiled warmly, eyes darting between her children's faces.
Before she had a chance to say anything, Naruto ran to her, embracing her tightly. "I've wanted to meet you for so long, ya know…"
Kushina closed her eyes as she returned the affection, her hand smoothing the back of his hair. "Ya know, huh? You are definitely my child. While your hair and eyes are your father's, it looks like you got my round face and some of my quirks," she snickered as she leaned back to look him in the eyes.
Namiko hung back, observing the two. She wanted to give her brother a chance to see their mother first and not be selfish. She had already been blessed to see her in the memory that Itachi had shown her and Sasuke.
Namiko watched the heartwarming scene unfold, her chest tightening with a mix of emotions. She felt a longing ache to embrace her mother, yet a sense of joy at seeing Naruto finally have the chance he had always dreamed of. Tears pricked her eyes, but she quickly blinked them away, trying to focus on the task at hand.
Kushina's gaze drifted to Namiko, her warm smile broadening. "And there's no mistake that you're my little Namiko."
At that, Namiko took a hesitant step forward. Her voice trembled as she whispered, "Okaa-san…"
Namiko swallowed hard, her hands trembling as she moved closer. When Kushina opened her arms in invitation, Namiko couldn't hold back anymore. She rushed into her mother's embrace, the floodgates breaking as she buried her face in Kushina's shoulder.
"I missed you," Namiko choked out, her words muffled against Kushina's shoulder. "Even though we never got the chance to know you…I missed you every day."
Kushina held her tightly, one hand cradling the back of Namiko's head while the other rubbed soothing circles on her back. "I've always been with you, my little spitfire," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion.
Namiko felt her little girl do a somersault in her belly and Kushina pulled back at the sensation. "And it seems you have your own little spitfire too." Kushina rubbed Namiko's stomach affectionately. "Ya know, you were always the one who moved constantly, but Naruto was calm."
"Well, he makes up for it now." Namiko laughed while Naruto shot her a half-glare, sticking his tongue out at her.
"So, how did this happen and who?" asked Kushina, gesturing to Namiko's stomach.
"My own irresponsibility is how this happened." Namiko laughed nervously. "But it turns out you were right about who I'd marry: Uchiha Sasuke, Mikoto and Fugaku's youngest son."
"Sasuke, huh?" Kushina's eyes went wide in surprise, curious as to how Namiko would've known she joked about that to Mikoto, but she didn't press it further. "Wait, you said 'marry'…are you an Uchiha now?"
Namiko nodded. "We got married about a month ago. We're having twins too, a boy and a girl."
Kushina's expression softened, her surprise melting into a tinge of sadness. "Married already and babies on the way…" Her hand rested gently on Namiko's stomach again, a wistful look passing over her face. "Sasuke better be taking good care of you."
"He is. He acts all tough on the outside, but he loves me and he'd do anything for me…plus he's overprotective, to say the least," Namiko admitted, glancing at Naruto with a sheepish smile. "He's watching my every move right now and refusing to let me take any risks. I wouldn't be surprised if he's pacing back and forth outside."
"That sounds about right," Naruto interjected with a laugh. "He's been on edge ever since he found out about the babies. It's kinda funny."
Kushina chuckled softly. "Well, he's doing his job as a husband. I wouldn't have expected anything less from an Uchiha. They're loyal to a fault once they care about someone. Mikoto used to say the same about her husband." Her gaze turned serious for a moment. "But remember, Namiko, you can lean on Sasuke when you need to, but you've got strength all your own."
Namiko's chest tightened with emotion. "I'll do my best, Okaa-san," she whispered, her voice thick with tears.
Naruto folded his arms, grinning. "Yeah, well, I'll make sure Sasuke doesn't drive her crazy, ya know. That's my job as the big brother."
Kushina's eyes twinkled as she looked between them. "You two have grown up so much…I wish I had been there to see it all." Her smile turned bittersweet. "I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you both."
"You are here now," Naruto said firmly, his eyes shining with determination. "And we're not letting this moment go to waste. There's one thing I wanted to ask you: how did you and tou-chan meet and fall in love?"
"Well, it's a bit embarrassing, ya know! Let's sit if we're going to talk about this." Kushina said as she rubbed the back of her head nervously. "It was the first day of school after I moved to Konoha. I introduced myself to the class and declared I would be the first female Hokage. Kinda rude of me, ya know? To be the new kid and just say that. I was always putting my foot in my mouth."
Namiko hid a laugh behind her hand. "Now I know where Naruto gets it from."
"You act like you never do stupid things…" scoffed Naruto. "Like repeatedly disobeying direct orders from the Hokage and other superiors."
Namiko immediately stopped laughing. "…shut up."
"I'm just not gonna ask about that…" Kushina shook her head amusedly. "Anyway, your father stood up and said he was going to be a great Hokage that the whole village respected. So right from the start, we kind of clashed, and it didn't help that I felt like a major outsider."
"However, when I was twelve years old, shinobi from Kumo kidnapped me to gain control over the kyuubi. I stealthily dropped strands of my hair, hoping that someone would find me…and someone did. Your father came to my rescue. He defeated all the shinobi and carried me back home to Konoha." Kushina let out a dreamy sigh. "He told me he came after me because he cared for me, and I realized that maybe I wasn't an outsider after all. Someone wanted me. From that moment on, Minato was a great shinobi in my eyes. It was then that I fell in love with him."
"That's so sweet," whispered Namiko.
"Minato was the best thing that ever happened to me. He was by my side from that day on." Kushina leaned back on her hands. "If it weren't for him, I think the kyuubi would have overcome me."
"What? Why?" asked Naruto.
Kushina looked over at the pinned kyuubi. "As I'm sure you know, the kyuubi feeds on hate and I wasn't exactly feeling very loved when I was younger. I was brought to the village with the sole purpose of becoming the next jinchuriki after Uzumaki Mito. I was furious and scared; I didn't want to be chosen, but I didn't get a say."
Naruto's brow furrowed angrily. "You weren't even asked?"
Kushina shook her head. "No, but once I found love in your father, everything changed. I was no longer angry and I was loved. Mito had told me once that love was the key to keeping the kyuubi at bay and I'm telling you the same thing." She smiled at Namiko. "You've already found your person, but what about you, Naruto?"
Naruto blushed, scratching the back of his head bashfully. "Yeah, I have someone. Her name is Hyuuga Hinata."
"She's my best friend too. She's the sweetest thing. Honestly, Hinata is too good for him," said Namiko teasingly, sticking out her tongue at her brother.
"Ha ha ha," laughed Naruto sarcastically. "I can see what you mean though, kaa-chan, having Hina has given me the strength to keep going."
The kyuubi let out a fearsome growl snapping several of the Adamantine Chains. Naruto stood up, cracking his knuckles. "I think it's we teach this overgrown furball a lesson, huh, imouto?"
"Let's do this," said Namiko determinedly as she and Kushina both stood as well.
"Namiko, I'll help you suppress the kyuubi. Naruto, you attack like you did earlier, but ya know…bigger," said Kushina as her Adamantine Chains joined Namiko's, wrapping the kyuubi's neck and torso. More chains shot from Namiko's back and chest, grabbing the kyuubi's limbs and effectively rendering the creature completely immobile.
"You want me to go bigger, kaa-chan? I can go bigger…" Naruto smirked, crossing his hands as Sage mode activated. "Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu!" Dozens of clones shot forward, creating large versions of Rasengan. "Massive Rasengan Barrage!"
It had been well over an hour since they started this and Sasuke was getting increasingly worried. He saw Hinata's gaze flicker in concentration; it was minuscule, but Sasuke was immediately concerned. "What's wrong? Is Namiko okay?"
Hinata sighed forcefully. "She's fine. Her and Naruto's chakra spiked, but they're both stable."
"The babies?"
"Fine. This isn't hurting them in the slightest."
Yamato kept his seal watchfully over the siblings. "Sasuke, breathing down Hinata's neck isn't going to help them. Trust her, she is Namiko's best friend, she wouldn't allow her to get hurt in any way."
Sasuke grumbled as he used his Sharingan to stare at the colors of chakra surrounding Namiko and Naruto. He couldn't see their chakra points, but he knew they were definitely using more chakra than normal as the intensity of their chakra changed. He could see the kyuubi's red chakra flaring within them both, and two tiny balls of light blue chakra nestled inside Namiko. 'Hinata better be right…'
An orange band of chakra connected Naruto to the kyuubi as he pulled hard on its chakra. He quickly created another Rasen-Shuriken and let it loose. It struck the beast in the chest and Naruto's clones pulled on the chakra as hard as they could. "Namiko!" he shouted as he ran to her. "Help me pull it out!"
As he got nearer, the band of chakra stretched to Namiko as well. She wrapped her hands around the chakra and pulled it free. The kyuubi's chakra flowed into them, surrounding them like fire. The kyuubi growled menacingly and a black orb began to form near its mouth.
'How does it still have that much power?' they both thought simultaneously.
Instinctively, they both put their hands over their seals and twisted. Torii gates snapped over each of the kyuubi's tails, then its body and head, locking it away. The fiery chakra began to fade as the siblings turned to Kushina.
Her face was beaming with pride. "You two did it! I knew you could." She hugged them and as she let go, her face became sullen as she held their hands.
"What are you going to do now?" asked Naruto.
"I'm going to join Minato now," said Kushina with a bittersweet smile. "But before I go, I have something I need to tell you, especially Namiko. The truth about the night you were born."
"The truth?" repeated Namiko.
"Tou-chan said it had to do with the man in the mask from the Akatsuki," said Naruto. "What happened?"
Kushina's lips pressed into a straight line. "…that masked man." She shook her head angrily. "I don't know how but he knew…"
Namiko's brows knit together. "Knew what?"
"About the one and only time a jinchuriki's seal weakens." Kushina glanced at Namiko's stomach. "Childbirth."
Namiko took a slow, deep breath. "So the toads were right. My seal is breaking…"
"Unfortunately, yes," replied Kushina. "Sandaime knew about it, as his wife was the one who helped deliver you. Well, she helped deliver Naruto anyway."
Namiko gnawed on her lower lip anxiously. "What exactly happened, okaa-san?"
"I went into labor and was rushed to a secret location outside of the hospital to give birth, just in case the kyuubi was to escape." Kushina exhaled forcefully. "Minato was there to keep my seal intact, and everything was going smoothly. Naruto was born just fine, but the masked man came and killed Biwako, the other nurses, and ANBU guarding us outside. He grabbed Naruto and tried to kill him to get your father to hand over me and the kyuubi."
Naruto narrowed his eyes. "Talk about a lowlife, trying to kill a baby."
"Your father saved you thanks to his Flying Raijin, but the masked man took me to release the kyuubi. I still hadn't given birth to you." Kushina looked at Namiko. "He strung me up with some sort of chakra rope and used his Sharingan to extract the kyuubi from the seal. Minato arrived just after and saved me from being crushed by the kyuubi."
"So then how was I born?" asked Namiko.
"Well…" began Kushina.
Minato laid her softly on the bed next to Naruto. "Here…just be with Naruto."
Kushina shuddered as another contraction ripped through her body. "I think…you're going to have to deliver our little girl."
"What do I do?" asked Minato, his voice rising slightly in panic. "I'm not a medic!"
Kushina gritted her teeth. "I don't think you have a choice. Namiko isn't waiting any longer!"
'Time to suck it up, Minato. You can do this,' he thought as he positioned himself at the end of the bed.
Kushina let out a yell. "This was not how I thought any of this would go."
Minato took a deep breath, his hands trembling slightly. He placed his palms against Kushina's knees, helping her brace. "Alright, Kushina," he said, his voice steadier than he felt. "On the next contraction, push as hard as you can. We're bringing our little girl into this world."
Kushina nodded, sweat dripping down her brow. She clenched her teeth and bore down with all her might, letting out a guttural cry. Minato tried to stay calm, focusing entirely on what needed to be done.
"I can see her head!" he exclaimed, his panic momentarily replaced with awe.
Kushina grunted in response, her grip on the sheets tightening. Another contraction hit, and with one more determined push, a tiny cry pierced the chaos around them.
"She's here," Minato said breathlessly, holding their baby girl in his arms. Her fiery red hair was damp, her cries strong and healthy. "And she's got your beautiful red hair."
Kushina's body sagged with exhaustion, but a radiant smile spread across her face. "Let me…see her."
Minato carefully laid their newborn daughter on Kushina's chest. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she gazed at Namiko's scrunched little face. "Hello, my little spitfire…"
Minato placed Naruto on Kushina's chest as well, the twins each grabbing the other's hand as Kushina's warmth enveloped them. Minato kissed each tiny head. For a fleeting moment, it felt as though the world stood still.
Kushina's voice grew softer as she recalled the moment. "That moment, holding the two of you together, was the happiest moment of my life. For a little while, it felt like nothing else mattered. Just us, our little family."
Her tone became darker as she recalled what happened next. "Unfortunately, it was short-lived. Minato left to fight against the masked man and freed the kyuubi from his control. He was able to use Flying Raijin to transport the kyuubi out of the village. He transported it to the furthest place possible from the village, where the three of us were."
"I've got to erect a barrier to hold him while I perform the sealing," said Minato breathlessly. "I don't have much chakra left. I'm on borrowed time."
"I can still do it, Minato." Chains emerged from Kushina's back, coiling themselves tightly around the kyuubi and pinning him to the ground. A loud cry pierced through the chaos. "Oops, woke him up…sorry, Naruto."
She reached out gently to stroke his cheek along the whisker marks, a small laugh breaking free. "Looks like being born while the kyuubi was still inside me left its mark." Her hand drifted over to Namiko. "Because she doesn't have any marks at all."
A cough wracked through her body, blood staining her hand. "Seal it back inside me. There's no way I'm getting out of this alive, so I'll take the kyuubi to my death and delay the interval of when it returns. My only regret is that I won't see them grow up."
"…Kushina…" said Minato softly as he glanced at the infants in his arms. "Preserve what little chakra you have and I'll seal it inside them so you can see them when they're older. I'll split the kyuubi in half and work your chakra into the seal along with a bit of my own; a little piece of us will always be with them that way."
"No! Just seal it back in me! I don't want our children to bear such a heavy burden!"
"I'm not a jinchuriki, I can't physically seal that much chakra away at once. I have no choice but to divide it. And if you take the kyuubi with you to your death, it'll upset the balance of biju in the world."
"Minato, find another way. There's no hope for me, but you could be there for them!"
"I could never be a replacement for you. There are things as a jinchuriki and a mother that only you can tell them." He shook his head sadly. "I'll have just enough chakra to do this twice."
Kushina let out a choked sob. "I don't want them to be alone…"
"They'll have each other and they'll have others to care for them in their lives. We have to have faith that they'll be strong, after all, our family is shinobi." Minato transported the altar to them and laid the babies on it side by side.
Kushina coughed heavily again, more blood splattering on the ground in front of her. Minato rushed to her side. "Kushina?!"
The kyuubi suddenly broke free from its constraints poised to kill the infants on the altar. Minato and Kushina both threw themselves in the way, desperate to save the lives of their children. The kyuubi's claw pierced them through the torso, stopping centimeters from the twins, blood dripping off its claw and onto the children below.
Minato quickly summoned Gerotora to give him the key to the seal. Once the toad had disappeared, Minato gave a small sigh of relief. "I'm not going to last much longer, I'm launching the Eight-Signed Seal now. We…won't be seeing them for quite a while, so let's tell them what we want to say."
Kushina gave a small, contemplative hum. "Naruto, Namiko…don't be a picky eater. Eat a lot and grow up big and strong. Make sure to take a bath every day. Don't stay up too late, unless it's for a good reason, like studying. On that note, study hard and learn your ninjutsu well, unlike I did. I'm sure you both will have things you're great at and things you're not, but don't worry about it because your differences will be what make you great. Respect your elders and be polite! Make friends and learn to love and trust others."
"This last part is important, regarding the Three Prohibitions of Shinobi. Be extra careful about lending and borrowing money. Take your pay and put it in a savings account. No alcohol, not until you're of age! And the last prohibition: dealing with the opposite sex." A cough made Kushina pause. "Naruto, I'm sure you'll notice girls at some point and that's normal, just be respectful and careful. Namiko, guard your heart and don't let some guy just swoon you. If he's the right one, he'll be patient."
Tears streamed down Kushina's face, onto their children below. "Promise us that you'll take care of each other and love each other. Make dreams and have the confidence to make those dreams come true! I wish I could have more time to say more but…I love you both so very much…I'm sorry, Minato, I talked too much."
"No, it's alright," he reassured her, a small smile gracing his face. "Naruto, Namiko, my words to you…well, I guess your talkative mom said it all." He closed his eyes, placing a hand on each child, whispering, "Eight-Signed Seal…"
Naruto and Namiko listened, their expressions a mixture of awe and sorrow. Namiko reached up to wipe away a tear that slipped down her cheek. "Okaa-san…you and otou-san went through so much for us."
Kushina shook her head gently, her smile unwavering despite the sadness in her eyes. "There was never a choice, Namiko. You and Naruto were our world. I only regret that we couldn't be there to watch you grow up."
Naruto clenched his fists, his determination blazing in his blue eyes. "We'll make you and tou-chan proud, ya know! I'll become Hokage just like him, and Namiko will be there with me every step of the way. And we'll protect the village just like you both did."
Kushina's eyes shimmered with tears. "I know you will. You both have my Uzumaki spirit and your father's Will of Fire, and that's unbreakable."
Namiko stepped closer, gripping Kushina's hand tightly. "Thank you, okaa-san, for everything. For fighting so hard to keep us safe. For loving us so much that even now, you're here, helping us. I hope I can be half as strong as you."
"You're already stronger than I was," Kushina said softly, reaching out to tuck a strand of Namiko's hair behind her ear. "And you'll be an amazing mother too. Your little ones are so lucky to have you." Namiko gave a bittersweet smile, leaning into her mother's touch.
Her expression grew serious as she placed her hand over Namiko's stomach, right over the little girl. "You know the whole story now, so make sure you are prepared for when these two decide to make their entrance into the world. With a war incoming and jinchuriki being hunted, it's going to be even riskier than when I was pregnant with you two."
"I know, but we'll be ready," said Namiko determinedly.
Kushina nodded, her gaze steady as she studied Namiko. "I know you will, but promise me something—both of you. Don't forget to lean on each other. You're twins, and that's a unique bond that can never be broken."
Naruto and Namiko exchanged a glance, their shared resolve clear. "We promise," they said in unison.
Kushina's smile widened, pride shining through her tears. "Good. And Namiko," she added, her voice softening, "Lean on Sasuke and allow him to do the same. Marriage is a partnership with give and take. That's how your father and I made it through everything: together. And I want you to remember this: being a mother is about more than just protecting your children. It's about giving them the strength to face the world, to make mistakes, and to grow. No matter how tough it gets, don't be afraid to let others help you. That includes this knucklehead." She shot Naruto a playful look.
"Oi!" Naruto protested, though his grin gave him away. "I'll be the best uncle ever, ya know! These kids are gonna love me!"
Namiko laughed, wiping her eyes. "I'm sure they will. But thank you, okaa-san. For everything."
Kushina stepped back slightly, her form flickering as the chakra sustaining her presence began to fade. "My time here is almost up," she said, her voice tinged with sadness. "But remember, I'll always be with you—in here." She placed her hand over Namiko's heart, then turned to Naruto and did the same. "And in here."
Naruto and Namiko both nodded, their tears falling freely now.
"We love you, okaa-san," Namiko said, her voice trembling as she wiped away tears.
"Always," Naruto added, his voice thick with emotion.
"And I love you both," Kushina replied, her smile radiant even as her form dissolved into glowing embers of light. "More than anything."
A/N: And it's done! Thank you for being patient through the slight delay today. So much more happened in this chapter and I seriously debated splitting it into two, but several people encouraged me to just go with it and keep it this length.
I hope you all like the changes that happened and the little flashbacks. Let me know what you think! I should be on schedule for the next chapter, so I should see you all again next weekend!
Love,
Eriisu
