Chapter 16
The annual college party was a much-anticipated event among the students of Karakura College. It marked the end of a grueling exam period, giving everyone a chance to unwind, celebrate their successes, or—for those who didn't do so well—enjoy one last night of fun before focusing on bringing their grades up. Scheduled to begin at seven in the evening, attendance was mandatory, and students were required to sign in to confirm they were present. However, punctuality wasn't enforced, allowing plenty of time for everyone to prepare at their own pace.
The excitement buzzed in the air, especially among the girls, who had all but skipped breakfast to travel to different dimensions in search of the perfect finishing touches for their outfits. Meanwhile, the guys were either lounging around playing video games or being reluctantly dragged into shopping dimensions to assist in last-minute errands.
Rukia Sode No was blissfully unaware of the morning rush. It was midmorning when she finally stirred, her petite frame buried under her soft, ice-blue blankets. Stretching with a satisfied yawn, she lazily sat up, brushing strands of dark hair from her face. The faint sunlight filtering through the curtains promised a warm, carefree day, but Rukia's thoughts were already elsewhere.
After brushing her teeth and taking a quick shower, she returned to her room and casually checked her phone. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw a text from Aunt Shirayuki waiting in her inbox.
Rukia froze, staring at the message for a long moment. A mix of emotions bubbled to the surface—guilt, curiosity, and frustration. She wanted to text her aunt everything she'd discovered recently. She wanted to demand answers. Was Aunt Shirayuki hiding something about their parents? But after taking a deep breath, Rukia pushed the urge aside and opened the message.
From Aunt Shirayuki: Hi my dear Rukia, we have not been communicating lately. I am upset about that. How are you? Hisana says you have been different. Would you like me to come and visit? Today is the party. I hope you have fun. Please, my sweet Rukia, keep in contact with me. I like to get updates on you.
The message left her chest feeling tight. Was she really acting that different? She hadn't even realized her sister had noticed. After another deep breath, Rukia carefully typed a response:
Hi, Aunt Shirayuki. I'm so sorry for not staying in touch. I've been busy studying and keeping up with school, but I'll do better to text you more often. I'm doing great, and I promise I'll update you soon. Thank you for checking in!
Hitting send, Rukia sighed heavily and tossed her phone onto the bed. She slipped into a pair of comfy pajama pants and a black V-neck shirt, deciding not to worry too much about the party just yet. She didn't have a dress her friends had forgotten to shop with her while they explored the Emporium dimension. But Rukia wasn't upset. She figured she'd throw something simple together later.
When she stepped out of her room, the smell of cereal greeted her. Tatsuki was sprawled out on the couch, her legs propped up on the armrest, wearing a black pair of sweatpants and a white tank top that showed off her toned physique. She lazily flipped through channels on the TV, her bowl of cereal balanced precariously on her lap.
"Rukia! Where are you going?" Tatsuki asked, her sharp brown eyes flicking over briefly before returning to the screen.
"I think I'll head to the cafeteria and then stop by the library for a while," Rukia replied with a shrug.
Tatsuki nodded, scooping another spoonful of cereal. "Alright. Senna's in her room playing with the Umbra Bloom again, trying to read up on it. And Orihime's hanging out with Uryu. Oh, but Orihime said she wanted to talk to us around six, so be back by then."
"Got it," Rukia said, offering a small smile before stepping out.
By the time she reached the cafeteria, breakfast had ended, and lunch was in full swing. After scanning the menu, her eyes landed on the Icy Herb-Crusted Salmon. Its description piqued her interest:
A fillet of salmon lightly crusted with icy herbs like dill and mint, served with a side of frost-touched vegetables.
Rukia could already imagine the cool, crisp crust paired with the warm, tender fish. She grabbed an iced tea to go with it, wrapped everything up, and made her way to the library.
The library was almost eerily quiet, but that wasn't unusual. Most students were either out preparing for the party or catching up on sleep. Rukia found a cozy spot in the back, unwrapped her lunch, and started eating. The salmon was as perfect as she had hoped fresh and flavorful, with the icy herbs adding a refreshing twist.
Just as she was finishing her meal, a familiar voice rang out.
"Rukia!"
She turned, a smile already forming on her lips as she spotted Hanataro rushing toward her. But her smile faded when she noticed the strained look on his face.
"What's wrong?" she asked immediately, setting her fork down and leaning forward.
"I have some bad news," Hanataro began, his voice trembling slightly. "I told the professors, but they don't believe me. Last night, I overheard something. I don't know who the leader was, but the siblings came back. And today… they're going to come back during the party."
Rukia's eyes widened, her fork pausing mid-air. "What are they after?"
"They want the Black Quill," Hanataro explained, his tone hushed. "It's in the headmaster's office a powerful artifact. I usually stay here all night tending to the books. They snuck in while I was hiding. Ghosts like me can mask our presence and go undetected, but it's draining. After a while, I can't hold it."
"Did you tell the headmaster?" Rukia asked.
Hanataro nodded, his expression grim. "I did, but he brushed me off. Said no one would dare try to sneak into the college and that I was worrying over nothing. He promised to put up security for my peace of mind but told me not to make a fuss. Rukia… What if another war is on the horizon, and no one's willing to acknowledge it? The professors and the creatures of good they're too stubborn to see the signs!"
Rukia's eyes grew thoughtful as she processed his words. "Hanataro, my friends and I… we've been piecing things together. We're almost certain a war is brewing too."
Hanataro shook his head, his transparent form flickering slightly. "This is serious! What should we do?"
Rukia let out a slow breath, her voice steady. "We bide our time and investigate to find the key players. Right now, we're on our own."
Hanataro nodded solemnly. "Well, I'm here for you. Whatever you need, whatever information you're looking for, just ask."
A small smile spread across Rukia's face. "Thank you, Hanataro. I'm so happy I met you."
Hanataro's face brightened at her words. "Hey, I'll always be here. And just so you know, I know secret passages around the college. If you ever need one, let me know." He paused, a glimmer of excitement returning to his voice. "Now, eat up! Oh, by the way, how are those books I gave you?"
Rukia perked up at the mention of the books, her expression softening. But then she leaned forward slightly. "Omg Hanataro! When we were in the shadow realm I discovered something awesome!"
Hanataro tilted his head, curiosity evident in his glowing eyes. "What is it?"
"I can stop time," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Hanataro's jaw dropped, his eyes wide with astonishment. "What? Rukia, that's! That's incredible! But you have to keep that secret. Only tell those you trust completely."
Rukia nodded, her expression turning serious. "I just… don't know enough about my powers to fully understand it. I don't know if it's my moms powers or my fathers or both combined. That's why I need your help."
Hanataro tilted his head. "What do you mean?"
"Remember when you told me you could look up any student who attended this college?" Rukia asked, a hint of urgency in her voice.
Hanataro nodded. "Of course. Why?"
"I hate to ask this of you, but could you look up someone for me? Her name is Ardenia. She's a Light Fae from the Spring Fae Court," Rukia explained.
Hanataro nodded eagerly. "Of course! Anything for you!"
Rukia smiled, and before she could say another word, Hanataro leaned in and pulled her into a hug. His ghostly touch made her feel momentarily weightless, a faint shimmer enveloping her. She hugged him back, her heart lighter.
"Thank you, Hanataro. For everything."
Hanataro smiled warmly. "Anytime. Just be careful, especially tonight. Be on guard!"
Rukia stood, disposing of her trash before turning back to him. "I will. And thank you again for looking into Ardenia, for everything. You've been a lifesaver."
"Take care, Rukia," Hanataro said, waving as she left the library.
By the time Rukia returned to her dorm, her mind was buzzing. She needed time to relax before the party. Settling onto her bed, she pulled out the beautiful black jewel Ichigo had given her. Its surface gleamed with an almost otherworldly light, and she found herself captivated by its beauty.
She hadn't even been at the college for a year, yet so much had happened. Her thoughts swirled with everything she'd learned and the challenges ahead. As she stared at the jewel, her phone buzzed on the bedside table.
Glancing at the screen, she saw Hisana's name flash across. Her heart leapt, and she instantly picked up, her earlier worries momentarily forgotten.
"Hisana!" Rukia's voice lit up as she answered the call, a small smile forming despite the weight she'd felt moments ago.
'Rukia! Oh my gosh, it feels like forever since we last talked. What time are you going to the party? My friends and I plan to be fashionably late!'
Rukia hesitated, glancing at the clock. She hadn't decided when they'd arrive, but knowing Orihime's enthusiasm, she suspected they'd end up there earlier than most.
"Umm… we'll probably be there about thirty minutes late—if we're not on time," Rukia answered, trying to sound confident.
'Perfect! Save us a table, okay? Oh! I wanted to tell you something,' Hisana's voice bubbled with excitement. 'Remember when we went dress shopping, and I mentioned visiting the Frostveil Dominion in the Ice Realm? Change of plans. I'm actually heading to the Ethereal Expanse—Byakuya's dimension! He's a Noble Spirit, and he wanted to show me around. Isn't that so cool?'
Rukia froze for a moment, her grip tightening on the phone. The mention of Byakuya sent an unexpected pang through her. She hadn't realized how much she'd been left out of Hisana's world recently.
"Yeah, sounds… fun! Have a great time," Rukia said, forcing cheerfulness into her voice.
'I will! Okay, see you at the party! Love you!'
Rukia felt a sting behind her eyes as Hisana's words hit her. Her chest tightened, the sensation of being distanced from her twin cutting deeper than she expected. "Love you more," she managed to reply.
Hisana laughed softly, making a playful kissing sound before hanging up.
As the call ended, Rukia lowered the phone, her vision blurring with unshed tears. She clenched it in her hand, willing herself to stay composed.
We're just growing up. She's finding her path, and I have to find mine.
Even though she knew this, the disconnect she felt from her sister left her hollow inside. With a deep breath, Rukia straightened and nodded to herself, swallowing the lump in her throat.
A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts. Quickly, she blinked away the lingering tears and sat up straighter. "Come in," she called, her voice steady.
The door opened to reveal Orihime, her bright smile lighting up the room. Behind her, Tatsuki and Senna followed, all dressed in matching pajamas that hinted they were here for a proper "getting ready" session.
"Rukia blinked, slightly startled but touched by their enthusiasm. She scooted over on her bed, making space for them. "What's up?"
Senna smirked, folding her arms. "You already showered, huh?"
Rukia nodded, a small laugh escaping her. "Of course."
"Good," Orihime said, clapping her hands together with excitement. "We're on a schedule! I'll be doing your makeup, Senna's using her magic for hers, and Tatsuki's keeping it simple—just light makeup. After that, I'll do your hair! It's grown so much since you got here, and I have the perfect updo in mind for you."
Rukia's eyes widened at the sudden declaration, but a shy smile tugged at her lips. "Oh… wow. Thank you, Orihime!"
Tatsuki crossed her arms, leaning against the wall with a mock-exasperated sigh. "Shouldn't we eat first? You know, before the makeover madness begins?"
Orihime gasped, placing a dramatic hand on her chest. "Eat before the party? That's just rude!"
Tatsuki groaned, rolling her eyes. "Of course. Princess Orihime."
The girls burst into laughter, the lighthearted banter easing any tension in the room. They got to work almost immediately, turning Rukia's dorm into a lively mini-salon.
Orihime hummed softly as she applied makeup to Rukia's face, her hands moving with careful precision. She mixed colors expertly, blending shades to enhance Rukia's delicate features. Her eyeshadow shimmered in hues of icy violet and soft silver, complementing her pale complexion. With the same care, Orihime applied a deep, violet-purple lipstick, the color adding a bold yet elegant touch to Rukia's look.
"You have such lovely features, Rukia," Orihime said with a warm smile as she stepped back to admire her work. "This color was made for you."
Senna, meanwhile, was busy with her own transformation. A faint shimmer of magic surrounded her as she conjured up her makeup with shadows and glittering violet tones. The smoky black and purple hues enhanced her sharp features, giving her a striking, otherworldly beauty.
Tatsuki kept her look understated yet effortlessly gorgeous. She opted for a simple swipe of red lipstick and light mascara, the minimal makeup highlighting her natural strength and confidence.
As Orihime started working on Rukia's hair, she couldn't help but gush about how much it had grown. She gently twisted and pinned the dark strands into an intricate updo, leaving a few loose curls to frame her face. "You're going to steal the show tonight, Rukia," Orihime said, beaming with pride.
Rukia glanced at herself in the mirror and couldn't hide the small smile that formed. "Thanks, Orihime. And thank you, all of you. I didn't realize how much I needed this."
Tatsuki leaned back against the headboard, smirking. "That's what we're here for. Now let's hope the party's half as fun as this"
The room was filled with laughter as the girls admired one another's looks. Rukia's gaze shifted to Senna, whose long, vibrant purple hair cascaded freely over her shoulders, catching the light in mesmerizing waves. There was something undeniably magical about her presence, the deep violet of her eyes twinkling with mischief.
Tatsuki, who usually kept her hair in a practical braid, had let it down for the evening. The sharp, spiked strands in the front were neatly gelled, adding an edgy elegance that suited her fiery personality. Her makeup was simple, yet the faint red of her lips and subtle sweep of mascara brought out her natural beauty effortlessly.
Orihime, however, looked nothing short of ethereal. Her cascading orangish blonde hair shimmered as it flowed down her back, framing her face like a glowing halo. She had expertly applied her own makeup while working on Rukia's, blending shades of green, orange, and light blue into a masterpiece that seemed to dance across her skin. She radiated warmth, her energy filling the room with joy.
"I don't know what I'm going to wear now," Rukia admitted, tilting her head in contemplation. "I had a pretty yellow dress picked out, but with this makeup, it won't look right."
Orihime's lips curled into a knowing smile as she suddenly snapped her fingers. The sound rang out with a touch of magic, and the door swung open dramatically. Four stunning dresses floated into the room, levitating effortlessly in midair.
The girls gasped in unison, their eyes widening in awe as the dresses hovered before them, each one seemingly crafted to reflect the wearer's essence.
Rukia's gaze immediately went to the first dress, a short number with a daring clash of dark purple and black. It barely looked like it would cover much, the fabric swirling like shadows in the air. It was bold, edgy, and undeniably Senna. Senna tilted her head, a sly grin spreading across her face as she admired the design.
Next, Rukia's attention shifted to the fiery red dress. It was off-the-shoulder, with intricate stitching that made it appear as though it were a two-piece. The fabric shimmered like embers in the light, its seductive style leaving no doubt that it was meant for Tatsuki. It was a dress that exude power and allure, perfectly capturing her.
The third dress was a vision of elegance. Long and flowing, it shimmered with shades of green, orange, and pink, its iridescent fabric rippling like sunlight dancing on water. The dress was undeniably regal, fit for a queen—or in this case, the princess of the nymphs.
Finally, Rukia's gaze fell upon the dress floating before her. Her breath caught in her throat as she took it in. The gown shimmered with an otherworldly blend of icy blues, deep violets, and silvers, with subtle hints of black woven throughout. The colors seemed to shift and glisten as the light hit them, creating an effect that was both mesmerizing and mysterious.
It was as if the dress had been made to embody her very essence—the icy power she carried within her and the fae magic she barely understood. The intricate details reminded her of frost patterns on a windowpane, delicate yet unyielding. She reached out hesitantly, her fingers brushing against the cool, silken fabric.
"It's… incredible," Rukia murmured, her voice filled with wonder.
Rukia couldn't help but marvel at the gown. Though she still didn't know what kind of fae she was, the dress seemed to whisper a truth she hadn't yet uncovered. It was a reminder that, despite the uncertainty of her journey, she was forging her own path.
The girls stood together, admiring the dresses, their excitement building as they imagined how the night would unfold. It was a moment of shared anticipation, their bond strengthening as they prepared for an unforgettable evening.
The girls beamed as they admired their dresses, showering Orihime with gratitude. "You're an amazing dressmaker," Senna said with an approving nod.
Orihime blushed, waving her hand dismissively but unable to hide her smile. "It's nothing, really. I just wanted you all to feel as beautiful as you are."
One by one, they each grabbed their dress and helped each other change. The room buzzed with excitement as they twirled and adjusted fabric, ensuring everything fit perfectly. When they were finally ready, they stepped back to take in the sight. The air was electric with confidence and camaraderie.
"We look amazing!" Senna declared, her voice brimming with pride as she admired herself in the mirror.
Tatsuki smirked, running a hand down the fiery red fabric of her dress. "We clean up pretty well, don't we?"
Rukia smiled at her friends, but a shadow of unease crept into her mind. Her thoughts wandered back to what Hanataro had told her about Loly, Luppi, and Menoly planning to steal the Black Quill during the party. The weight of the information dulled her excitement, and her expression faltered.
Orihime, always attuned to the emotions of others, noticed immediately. She stepped closer, concern softening her features. "Rukia, what's wrong? Is everything okay?"
Rukia hesitated for a moment but then shook her head. "I didn't want to burden you girls with this, but I can't keep it to myself anymore." She took a deep breath before continuing. "I got some information from a reliable source. Loly, Luppi, and Menoly are planning to come here tonight to steal something called the Black Quill while everyone is distracted by the party."
The room fell silent as the words sank in. Senna's eyes widened in alarm. "The Black Quill? That's dark magic," she said, her voice tinged with urgency. "It's a relic that answers any question posed to it, but at a terrible cost. With each question, it takes ten years off the asker's life. If someone used it to ask about ways to start another war, it would gladly reveal the creatures and factions willing to join their cause. This is serious."
Tatsuki let out a low whistle and crossed her arms. "I assume the professors and the headmaster are already aware?"
Rukia nodded. "They are, but—"
"Then we'll just have to be on guard," Tatsuki interrupted, her voice firm and resolute.
Orihime's lips curved into a reassuring smile. "It's a good thing I made these dresses battle-ready as well."
Senna grinned, her confidence infectious. "We've got this. And the guys will have our backs too. Together, there's no way they'll succeed."
Rukia felt a weight lift from her shoulders as her friends rallied around her. Their unwavering support reminded her that she wasn't alone in this. They weren't just going to a party—they were going in with a purpose, ready to protect everyone and everything they cared about.
With a shared sense of resolve, the girls grabbed their purses, the shimmer of their dresses catching the light as they moved. They stepped out of their apartment dorm with determination etched into their expressions, ready to face whatever the night had in store.
