Chapter 8 - Entrance Exam
The U.A. High School course is famously touted as the greatest hero course in all of Japan, perhaps even the world; it's a course designed to give its students everything they need to go pro!
Its status isn't just based on conjecture either, but on the idea that many of Japan's greatest heroes all graduated from the school, from Best Jeanist, to Endeavor, to even the legendary All Might! To many, it seems that graduating from U.A. is a requirement to be among the greatest heroes!
However, with such prestige comes the requirement for that same talent from students, as U.A. is also known as one of the toughest hero courses to get into. Every year, only about 35 to 45 students are admitted into both freshmen Classes 1-A and 1-B… but typically, over 20,000 potential students apply every year!
And today, a young man by the name of Izuku Midoriya arrived at the Entrance Examination Site for U.A. High with the intention of becoming a student at the academy… without using his quirk?!
"Phew… made it just in time!" Izuku exclaimed, with a sweat drop or two falling down his face, clearly nervous about the test he was about to take, "I wonder… can I really get into U.A. without using my quirk?"
About a week prior to the Entrance Exam during a sparring session he and All Might had together, Izuku had discussed his guilt based on how he was to get into U.A. Academy. Of course, he was incredibly grateful to All Might for being able to inherit his power from him, but he couldn't help but believe that One for All gave him an unfair advantage on the Entrance Exam.
"Then kid," the All Might of the past had said, "Why don't you try to get in without using your quirk? I remember your skills back from the Sludge Villain incident clear as day… I'm sure you could do it!"
Back in the present, Izuku Midoriya gulped nervously.
"I know All Might said that… but this is U.A. we're talking about. Only the best of the best can get in." Izuku thought, "And… while quirkless, I don't think I would-"
"Move aside, Deku!" a voice shouted from behind him, as Izuku turned back, heeding the order that had been given to him in the process.
Due to the way he was addressed, Izuku instantly recognized the voice.
"Morning Kacchan! Let's do our best…" Izuku attempted to say, but Bakugo had already moved past him, not so much as saying a word in response.
"He hasn't made fun of me ever since the Sludge Villain incident." Izuku thought, "Maybe he wasn't so honest with his words back then..."
Izuku smiled faintly, as he began his march to the halls of the examination site. The two interconnected buildings he approached were tall, and gleaming blue from the tinted glass that covered every inch of them. The buildings came together to form a sort of 'H', but that was just the school... the exam site was also a sight to behold.
In front of him, Izuku saw various numbered doors which would lead him to the exam hall. Each were extremely tall, made to accommodate the widest range of quirks as possible... a purpose which Izuku analyzed to be necessary when he looked around the site, as he observed that many people of varying body types were all seemingly preparing for the Entrance Exam.
"Wow! Everyone here looks so cool, I wish I had time to analyze all their quirks!" Izuku thought, "But... I need to get ready for the Entrance Exam, I don't have time to mess around."
He had already filled out all the paperwork he needed for the test in advance, so there was no need for him to register now. Proof of this came when he pulled out a slip of paper from his backpack containing instructions as to just what Izuku should do once he reached the testing site.
"So I'm supposed to enter into the second door..." Izuku thought aloud.
Following the paper's instructions, Izuku made his way to the second door. He passed the final metal archway above him, which housed U.A's logo (a wide 'U' with an 'A' inside of it), and began to wear an awkward smile. He could no longer hide his excitement.
"WELCOME TO TODAY'S LIVE PERFORMANCE!" the Voice Hero: Present Mic shouted, "EVERYBODY SAY 'HEY'!"
Despite Present Mic's own boisterous attitude, everyone remained silent, though Izuku faintly said "H-hey!" in the background. He was embarrassed by the awkwardness of the situation, but he didn't want the hero to be the sole one experiencing it.
"WELL AT LEAST ONE OF YOU HAS THE EXAMINEE SPIRIT!" Present Mic shouted, "I'M HERE TO PRESENT THE GUIDELINES FOR YOUR PRACTICAL EXAM! YOU READY?!"
Yet again, Izuku tried to share the embarrassment with Present Mic, as he faintly chanted,
"Y-yeah!"
"Shut up." Bakugo muttered to Izuku, who was directly to Bakugo's right.
Present Mic then began explaining the rules. If you want them explained, go read the damn original MHA manga yourself!
Here they are though, in case you don't want to!
Basically, you've got ten minutes to defeat as many Faux Villains as possible, worth 1, 2, and 3 points respectively. The stronger the faux villain, the more points they're worth. There's a fourth faux villain as well, which is considered too difficult for most examinees and is worth 0 points, which you should AVOID.
And yes, attacking other contestants is NOT allowed, BAKUGO!
Here are some extra added details not present in the original MHA manga as well.
Any equipment you need IS generally allowed, though it's considered on a case by case basis depending on whether or not the equipment was relevant to judging their potential to join the hero course. For example, someone quirkless could hypothetically be allowed to bring a weapon to level the playing field.
You have to file for special exemptions to bring in equipment though, so most students don't.
In the hall, listening to Present Mic's speech, there were two more people than there normally should have been in the original story.
One of these two extra people had a red streak in her hair, carrying both a guitar case and bored expression. She yawned.
"Jeez... you'd think that U.A. of all places would know how to keep things concise." she muttered, "All this boils down to at the end of the day is that we all gotta kick some villain ass!"
The other extra person wasn't actually a person, but an animal who had acquired the traits of a human. He had decided to sign up for U.A. after a recommendation from Japan's Number One hero, All Might.
After two months of training on an island in the South Blue, he came to Japan, and ended up staying with a hero who had given him her contact information, who coincidentally also ended up being a teacher at UA!
"This is making me nervous..." the ball of fluff muttered, "And Ms. Kayama's going to be watching too... I just hope I don't do too badly!"
Having explained all he needed to, Present Mic wrapped up his speech.
"Plus Ultra!" Present Mic shouted, "Break a leg, everyone!"
"Woah… this place is huge!" Izuku muttered under his breath, shocked by the fact that in front of him lay an entire city... just for the Entrance Exam!
Izuku was still nervous about the exam, but he was equally in awe at just how high-budget U.A. was… researching it was one thing, but seeing their facilities in person was another!
That wasn't the only thing Izuku was in awe of though, as matching the impressive architecture around him was a group of equally impressive applicants.
"Everyone looks so confident!" Izuku thought, analyzing the others, some of whom even had equipment to match their quirks, "Woah! Is that a pair of battle armor?!"
While noticeably different, Izuku himself also looked like he belonged to the group. Having already utilized his Alpha costume during his training with Gran Torino, at the moment, he bore a costume which was quite similar to his Beta costume from the original story.
This place seemed like a dream come true to Izuku... there were people all around, not judging him for his dream because each of them shared his. Even though he hadn't talked to any of them yet, Izuku already felt like he belonged here.
"AAAANNNDDDD… GO!" Present Mic shouted, out of the blue.
Izuku wasn't ready for this, flinching when he heard Present Mic's voice.
"Go?!"
His thoughts caught up with him a moment later, as Izuku realized that the exam had started, and began running.
Replacing his previous smile of awe at his surroundings was now a smile of determination... he wasn't sure if he could do this, but it wasn't about whether he could or couldn't, it was about whether he would or wouldn't… And he trusted that he would!
Izuku blasted off ahead of his competition, even without a quirk. Moments after Izuku began running, the awestruck competitors all quickly came to their senses, and followed close behind the green haired boy.
Running ahead temporarily, Izuku's lead ceased to be once a one-pointer leapt out from behind a building, blocking Izuku from going any further.
"A one-pointer!" he thought, "It looks to be sturdier than I expected! What can I do?! What-"
A moment later, the one-pointer launched it's tail at Izuku, utilizing it's wheels to propel it's body and tail faster than usual. The speed of the one-pointer shocked Izuku, but he was still able to dodge the tail strike... but it still grazed his arm!
"Calm down Izuku!" the boy thought, realizing his own panicked state was the cause of his inability to dodge that last attack. He turned around to face the robot, which also turned around to face Izuku. The boy got into a fighting stance in order to prepare to counter the robot.
"Just remember your notes, bait out an attack and…"
Before Izuku could even act, someone used her acid quirk to instantly take out the villain, causing it to melt right in front of Izuku's eyes.
"Thanks for being the bait!" the girl cheered, dashing away after saying this.
"Crap!" Izuku thought.
He was able to find another robot, but he was unable to take this one out due to someone else's interference as well. Then it happened again... and Izuku realized something.
"So this… this is the wall you have to overcome while quirkless!" Izuku thought, panic beginning to seep through his face, "It… it's not that you can't do it, it's that someone can always do it better! That's the disadvantage of having no power!"
Despite having thought of every contingency plan up to this point, Izuku was shocked by the fact that he hadn't realized this simple fact earlier; no, he had realized it earlier, he just hadn't accepted it.
Those with quirks could use every single advantage that those who were quirkless could, just not the other way around.
Izuku momentarily considered using his inherited quirk, but in the distance, he saw someone who instantly caught his eye… and caused him to change his mind.
"Grahh!" the girl screamed, her red scissor blade shining in the sunlight as she slashed through every faux villain that came her way, overwhelming not just the robots, but the people around her as well. She moved gracefully, and each of her swings had force behind them.
"Bring on as many as you want, cause everyone's getting an ass beating today!"
Izuku was star-struck. From the way that the girl moved, he instantly recognized that she was quirkless, but even so, she was fighting... and she was getting more points than everyone in the area! Reinvigorated, Izuku regained the smirk he had previously lost, as he quickly thought of a strategy.
"If everyone's defeating all the villains before I can find a way to defeat them… then what I have to do is simple!" Izuku noted internally, "I just have to get away from the people who are taking my points!"
Izuku quickly ran as far away as he could. After a bit of running, he heard a voice shout, "SIX MINUTES REMAINING!"
And once this voice sounded, two faux villains popped out in front of Izuku, a three-pointer, and a one-pointer.
A drop of sweat falling from his face, but Izuku maintained the same smirk he held earlier. The two robots in front of him seemed intimidating, overwhelming even... and what's worse, there was nobody around to help him if things went south. This situation was do or die... and Izuku thought only one thing.
"...Perfect."
"Should we step in?" one of the judges asked calmly, with only a hint of aggression seeping into his voice, "That boy's standing right in front of two faux villains, and he's exhibited no signs of having a quirk… the World Government's already on our ass about raising that criminal, we don't need to give them a reason to shut us down."
"No…" another judge noted with a calm indifference, "The confidence in his eyes… it's different from anyone else here. He'll show us something great."
"Are you sure about that?" a judge with an excited voice questioned, "That reindeer over there looks to have it too!"
While Izuku fought the two robots who approached him, the cute animal from earlier was now engaged in combat, and he looked far different from even just a few months ago.
He had begun to utilize a different routine with his fur, changing its color to a lighter brown as opposed to a darker one. Instead of none, he now wore a striped white and yellow shirt with red, yet more so-orange pants, and the same blue bag on his back as before. Most importantly, however, on top of his hat that he had received from Dr. Hiriluk, he wore a different, blue hat, disguising his most distinguishing attribute. He was almost unrecognizable from his previous self.
"Guard Point!" Chopper shouted, as several faux villains attacked him. Their attacks did nothing to Chopper, but they did force him into the air, which Chopper utilized to his advantage, "Now, Horn Point!"
Transforming yet again, Chopper attacked the Faux-Villains with his horns, destroying the villains by flipping around with them.
"Alright!" Chopper shouted, "It seems that my training to use my transformation points without the Rumble Ball is paying off! I'm so glad I managed to pick that up from my studying in the South Blue!"
"...that raccoon boy! His powers are incredible, so much so that he seems to currently be in the lead in terms of villain points… not only that, but he seems to be treating any who seem too unwell to fight in the process!" an excited voice said, "He might just be one of the most promising students we've had in years!"
"There's just one issue with him…" an uninterested voice said, "I checked the Grand Line's bounty records, and his profile matches up with Chopper, worth only fifty berries and classified as the notorious Straw Hat Pirates'... 'pet'."
"A pet? Is that all?!" questioned the excited voice, "He has the documents to prove that he lives in Japan now... and you never know! The Grand Line is a strange place, maybe he was a pet, but then he gained a power which allowed him to gain sentience! Plus, the boy out there looks quite a bit different from the person on that bounty! I say we give him a shot!"
"Don't get too ahead of yourself, Vlad." the uninterested voice responded, "Personally, I'm more interested in that girl with the Scissor Blade… I mean, she seems to not have a quirk, and she's already accumulated a similar amount of villain points to this… 'Chopper'."
"But she's quirkless, Aizawa!" The one known as 'Vlad' stated, "As interesting as she seems, her quirk doesn't have much potential, seeing as well, she has none!"
"We'll just have to agree to disagree." Aizawa responded, "What about the other quirkless one who's started moving up in the rankings? You got eyes on him at all?"
Back to Izuku's previous confrontation, the boy had used his almost inhuman strength to propel himself over and on top of the three pointer robot.
"Now let's see…" Izuku thought, looking around the back of the Faux Villain.
While Izuku was staring at the back of the Three Pointer, the One Pointer wasn't just doing nothing. The robot jammed its tail at Izuku, but the boy was able to react.
Izuku jumped upwards to avoid the one-pointer's tail, but kept a steady grip on the top of the three pointer's body so as to not fall off it. Due to Izuku's avoidance of the hit, the one pointer's attack hit the back of the three pointer instead of Izuku… and because of that blow, a weakness was revealed.
"Yes! A loose wire!" Izuku excitedly thought.
Quickly grabbing the loose wire, Izuku then leaped off the three pointer with it in hand, stretching and eventually breaking the wire. A moment later, the three pointer began to short circuit, and after that, was rendered immobile. Izuku had scored his first three points… but there was no time to celebrate, as behind Izuku, a much swifter one-pointer approached him.
"Bring it on." Izuku thought, turning around to match the one pointer.
Izuku began to counter the one pointer's approach by sprinting himself, screaming rather awkwardly as he did so (he is a fourteen year old).
Once his path collided with the one pointer, Izuku quickly dodged a tail strike that the one pointer let out.
"I probably can't bait it into attacking itself… I'm not fast enough for that. But then what can I…" Izuku thought.
As the bot turned towards him, Izuku thought of something.
Running towards the bot again, the bot rushed to Izuku as well… but when the pair collided this time, Izuku dodged the villains predictable tail strike by jumping upwards… and he wasn't just dodging, he was readying an assault on the villain!
"NOW GUM GUM… SMASH!"
Directly striking what appeared to be the eye of the faux-villain, Izuku, at least temporarily, rendered it either stunned or blind; either was fine.
Izuku then rushed over to the disabled three pointer. When he reached it, the boy went to where the one-pointer had struck earlier, noticing that the plate was indented and disconnected from the rest of the three-pointers body… like he thought it might be.
Izuku then tore off the plate. It was heavy, but he could handle it… after all, Izuku had carried items thousands of times heavier when he was training with All Might (hyperbole). He rushed over to the one pointer, who seemed to have recovered... but it was also still blind! It was a best case scenario!
Dashing over to the one-pointer, Izuku slashed at the robot with the plate, chopping it in half and successfully defeating it. The robot fell to the ground, as Izuku breathed in a sigh of relief. He pressed the large metal plate to the ground, leaning on it in order to catch his breath.
"FIVE MINUTES AND THIRTY SECONDS LEFT!" Present Mic shouted.
"Four points down… according to average acceptance rates, I'd need to get about forty if I wanted to pass the exam! I can't get cocky!" Izuku thought, as out of nowhere, two more faux villains arrived to face him.
Partially impersonating All Might, Izuku flashed a smile, as he shouted, "You want to fight too, villains?! Well then, bring it on!"
"This year's batch are quite the spectacle to watch, aren't they?" one of the judges said with a smile on her face.
"No way to know whether they'll actually hold up…" another said, "But this should tell us more…"
The judge hit a button in front of him, which had text above it labeled, 'ZERO'.
Izuku, who now had thirty-two points, had coincidentally made his way back to around the main area of the city. It was a crowded place, but everyone was tired around this point... even the quirkless Izuku Midoriya stood a chance of getting points here.
"Thirty-two points… that's below the average, but it's not impossible to get in at this rate!" Izuku noted "All Might was right… I can do this, even without my quirk!"
Cutting off Izuku's train of thought, however, was the zero-pointer; a being Izuku couldn't hope to face while quirkless.
The villain was indiscriminately crashing through buildings, and wreaking havoc on the city; it was a villain that would instill fear into the hearts of many… and that's why it was there.
It was meant to be overwhelming, in order to show off the true colors of the students who were hoping to be accepted into U.A.'s Hero Academy. Who would run, and who would fight... WHY would they run, or WHY would they fight?
"That… that's huge!" Izuku thought, staring back at the robot, "My current level of Full Cowling couldn't even hope to damage that thing!"
Five one-point robots suddenly barrelled in from the sides, accompanying the zero pointer. Three were taken out by passersby, but two were left for Izuku. The hero quickly slashed one that was heading straight towards him with the plate he had in hand, and then threw that plate at another nearby, not destroying it, but knocking it down, and thus incapacitating it. It was then taken out by a laser of sorts, which gave both Izuku and the laser boy one point.
"I should get out of here." Izuku thought, "I've got thirty-four points now… only six more, and I'll be sure to pass-"
"Ow…" a voice said, ringing through Izuku's ears as he turned back to face just who had made that noise.
It was a girl, who had gotten her foot stuck in the ground and couldn't move.
The zero pointer made their way towards the girl, as Izuku watched on, sweat falling down his face, and his expression breaking.
"Come on… I'm sure there are fail safes on this test!" Izuku thought, "I'm… I'm sure a teacher will come and help her, save her!
Izuku thought this... but no action came from his body to match his thoughts.
"But then, why won't my body move?!"
Izuku saw the girl's face once more, as the zero-pointer raised it's foot, sure to crush her if nothing occurred soon. The girl looked back at the robot, horrified, as Izuku knew what he had to do.
"One for All: Full Cowling… Five Percent!" Izuku thought, as an electrical aura activated around him, revealing his quirk to the world for the first time.
"So he had a quirk this entire time?" a calm judge questioned.
"Why hide it up until now?"
"Kid..." All Might thought, "You can do this."
Izuku jumped from building to building, gaining height quickly. Reaching the roof of a building, Izuku temporarily boosted his power so he would be launched farther than usual... as he shot up into the air, reaching the head of the zero-pointer.
When he was there, Izuku wanted to question why he didn't prioritize getting points, but he realized that didn't matter. Even if this was reckless, if he wanted to be a hero… then how could he abandon a girl right in front of him?!
This… was Izuku's first action as a hero. He charged up energy in his arm, as one hundred percent of One for All's energy flowed through it.
"One for All… ONE HUNDRED PERCENT…"
Now that he was up here, only one thing remained, to smash that robot, and let all his energy fly through his body… and for the name of his attack, Izuku decided to base it after that which he wanted to save.
"SABAODY…" Izuku shouted out, launching his fist forwards, "SMASH!"
With a heavy blow, the robot in front of Izuku was absolutely and utterly destroyed… launched back what had to have been hundreds of feet, and smushed into a thinness rivaling even paper. The zero-pointer robot, which had previously seemed so intimidating, was defeated in a singular blow!
"Direct hit!" Izuku shouted, smiling due to his adrenaline filled victory, despite his completely shattered arm.
Everyone watched on in awe, as the boy who seemed to be seemingly quirkless had, in an instant, defeated a foe that everyone just ran from! At that moment… Izuku seemed to be the truest hero out of everyone at the site!
"That boy who was chanting along with Present Mic..." a blue haired student with glasses mumbled, "He was that powerful this entire time?!"
While everyone was in awe of Izuku's strength, to the boy himself, that was the last of his concerns.
"Now… I just gotta worry about getting down." Izuku thought, thinking of the next step right away, "One for All, Five Percent!"
Izuku quickly began accumulating momentum by doing front flips in the air, also steering himself towards a nearby building in the process. Soon enough, Izuku was right on top of the building he was aiming for.
"Alright… now, Straw Hat… SMASH!"
Izuku then let his momentum funnel into a powerful downwards kick, which stalled him in the air and canceled out most of his momentum he had accumulated by falling. In the process however, the roof of the building he was going to land on was destroyed.
"WOAH!" Izuku yelled, as he fell through the building.
Instead of falling through numerous floors, Izuku instead fell just to the ground far below… It was a dummy building after all.
Izuku's body recoiled in pain when he hit the floor. Even though he was able to cancel out a lot of the momentum from his long fall, he wasn't able to cancel out all of it, plus, he suffered quite a bit of damage from when he fell through the building… and that's not even mentioning the whirlwind of pain he was experiencing by possessing a broken arm.
"Okay… I care a lot if I fail…" Izuku sheepishly commented, "…But I think I'm just gonna rest now."
And Izuku did, as he fell asleep right then and there.
Outside, everyone discussed the feat that Izuku had just pulled off, with only the aforementioned blue haired boy recognizing the true nature of the feat, with how he had jumped in to save a girl in trouble without a second thought.
After a moment, Recovery Girl opened the door to the building Izuku fell in, and quickly brought him outside, smooching him in order to grant him healing. The instant after Recovery Girl did, Izuku quickly jolted upwards and launched his left hand into the air, trying to do the same with the other, but being unable to.
"Alright! I'm awake!" Izuku cheered, subconciously imitating Luffy, a gesture which had so much energy that it shocked even Recovery Girl herself.
The moment after however, Izuku realized his fatigue, and took an instant turn in his attitude, "But, I think I'm just gonna take another quick nap now…"
Izuku fell over once more, and drifted into the world of unconsciousness.
Recovery Girl's quirk only boosted the natural healing factor of the body, and made the target of her quirk tired in the process, so it made sense.
…but, in his dreams, and in reality, all Izuku thought about was this exam. After all, he had only scored 34 points… that was below the average points for acceptance, but, could he have made it into U.A. still?!
"IZU… IZU… IZUKU!" someone shouted.
It was a week after Izuku had finished his exam, and the boy was currently lifting weights on a couch in his families house.
Looking to see who had called to him, Izuku saw that that it was none other than Inko Midoriya, Izuku's mother, who was holding out something in her hand.
"The letter! It's here!"
"Thanks Mom." Izuku said with a faint smile, putting down his weight and taking the letter from his mother.
He was unsure if he made it into the U.A… but he didn't run away from the facts. He hadn't heard from All Might since the day he left for his exam… could he have really done that badly?
Izuku took the letter from his mother, and brought it into his room, shutting the door behind him. In front of the door, Izuku's mother fidgeted, nervous as to what the results were… Izuku had put in so much work since he developed his quirk, and she hoped that he did alright on his exam!
Nervous himself and unsure of just what to expect, Izuku quickly ripped open his letter from U.A., as a projector dropped onto his desk, shocking Izuku.
"A projection?! And… is that All Might?!" Izuku shouted, looking at someone walking on camera. Izuku double checked the sender's address.
"This is from U.A. though, so what-"
"It's been a while! There's been much to deliberate on, apologies!" the recorded All Might explained, "Sorry for not telling you up until now… but there's a reason I came to Mustafu ten months ago. It was because I've come to teach at U.A!"
"A-at U.A.?! How come? For me?"
A hopeful look appeared on Izuku's face as he thought this, but his self doubt shortly afterwards got the better of him, as his face turned into a somber one when he thought of an alternative explanation.
"Or… maybe he found someone better to give One for All to… after all, there were a lot of awesome people during that Entrance Exam."
"But worry not. I'll get to the point now!" All Might stated, "Not only did you pass the written portion, but you also passed the practical portion, as assuming you had an adequate amount of rescue points, the villain points you earnt guaranteed you would be in at least the low-range of accepted students!"
Izuku's eyes grew wide, as a smile crept into his face.
"I can't believe it!" he muttered, a wave of relief and joy washing over him. But, his train of thought changed once he realized what All Might said, "Wait... rescue points?"
"But that's not all!" All Might shouted, as he showed Izuku a quick video of that same girl he saved.
On the video feed, Izuku saw her offering some of her points to him, as she saw that he hadn't been using a quirk at all up to that point, so he might have been in need of extra points.
"You've also moved others by the actions you took during your last act on the stage."
Izuku was confused, but also, felt a sense of elation he only felt during moments when he aced a test, or like that time that he met All Might for the first time… only this feeling was greater than either of those!
"On this exam, you see, defeating faux villains wasn't the only way to earn points!" All Might exclaimed, as a look of shock appeared on Izuku's face.
"A hero course that doesn't award heroes for doing the right thing… is no hero course at all! That is why Rescue Points were also a factor… and with sixty rescue points given to you, and forty-five for Uraraka… congratulations kid. You didn't just pass this exam, you aced it, and broke the previous record for the most points earnt in UA Entrance Exam history!"
Izuku felt a shock that he couldn't quite assess… he broke the record?! Sure, those rescue points were probably worth quite a bit… but of every U.A. Alumni, every other student in history, it was him, without his quirk, that was currently sitting at the top of the podium?!
"Come now, Young Midoriya! This will be your hero academy!"
Izuku Midoriya's life was changing. Only ten months ago, he had been bullied for his lack of a quirk and his persistence to be a hero despite that… but now, he was being told that it was that persistence that had allowed him to break records and become the best of the best. But… it wasn't just about that! He could finally be a hero now! Izuku Midoriya, at that moment, felt a sense of belonging that he had lacked almost his entire life.
Once All Might's speech finished, the Entrance Exam results were displayed, and Izuku saw the points which were on the board. To his confusion, despite All Might previously telling him he broke the record for most points in U.A. Entrance Exam history… there was somebody still above him!
"Wait... that's..." Izuku questioned, confused, "Chopper?"
END OF CHAPTER NOTES
We're finally entering into the U.A. Saga of the story! Yay!
This part of the story is definitely a fun one, with a lot of cool moments and development for the characters, both adapted from the original MHA and ones made up for this fanfic. I hope you all will enjoy it!
A while ago when I wrote this chapter, I wrote an in depth explanation as to the logistics behind Izuku breaking the record for points in Class 1-A. I'll keep it here unchanged at the very bottom… but first…
[SHOCKING REVIEW SHOWCASE]
Alright. Let's start things off with a review from MaximumRhapsody (thank you for your continued reviews on the series, they make my day lol)
First off, in regards to Izuku learning Haki or being given a Goku uniform, both of these are implausible with the 3 month time skip that occurred between the Sabaody Archipelago Arc and the Entrance Exam Arc.
Let me start with the more plausible of the two, the Goku uniform. For now, the only non-Kiryuin affiliated person in the world with a Goku uniform is All Might. Why? That will be explored later on in the story when All Might finally has to use the Goku uniform (he doesn't want to tip anyone off about having a Goku uniform until he has to).
In regards to Haki, the reason that All Might doesn't ask anyone about Haki is that he doesn't know what Haki is. Nobody in the Seven Continents does, and everyone who possesses Haki believes it to be a quirk (as you'll see later on, many quirks actually only serve to enhance or manipulate Haki. Some quirks are also heavily influenced by Haki… cough cough, One for All, cough cough…)
Will Izuku learn Haki in time? Undoubtedly. Will Izuku wear a Goku uniform with time? It's likely, but I haven't planned it yet. Will either happen soon? Definitely not.
As for his basic training, beyond sparring with All Might, Izuku has also gotten help from Gran Torino.
After about one and a half months of basic training, Izuku gained the ability to use 5% of his power at a stable rate, but hit a wall. All Might then called in Gran Torino to help Izuku, which is how he developed his Full Cowling technique in this story. This accelerated growth places him at the same level of power he was at during the Provisional Hero Licence Exam Arc, meaning that he's closing in on getting to 8%.
Now, the next question is if we'll ever see what happens to someone when they have a Quirk and eat a Devil Fruit. The answer? Not for a long while in the main story as per my current outline, but maybe in an adaptation of a movie or OVA.
The final question asks whether or not the League of Villains would have the ability to replicate Devil Fruits if they got their hands on one.
No.
The Intelligence of the League of Villains
is less than
The Intelligence of Caesar, who created SAD, which allows for one to become a Zoan… with only a 10% success rate
which is less than
Intelligence of Dr. Vegapunk, who created a perfected variant of Paramecia and Zoan-type artificial Devil Fruits.
Not to mention that if the League of Villains found a way to create artifical Devil Fruits, they'd probably be hunted down and killed by the Marines. All for One ain't even touching an Admiral in combat.
[A SHOCKING RANT FROM THE PAST?!]
You're probably thinking, "wait, if Izuku broke the previous record, does that mean he got a higher score than the best known U.A. Alumni, even All Might himself?"
Well, the answer to that question is 'well yes, but actually no.'
First off, All Might's attendance of U.A. is actually quite illogical when you consider when he got his quirk, so we'll treat All Might as a special exception. Basically, All Might got into U.A. based on Nana Shimura's recommendation at an age older than a student entering into High School, and was plopped into a third year class after getting a special course to catch him up to the material, making him never have to take the entrance exam.
Next is Endeavor, which is a situation I think is obvious… Just like Bakugo, he focused on villain points and didn't care at all about rescue points, therefore, he didn't get an absurd score. Endeavor got more villain points than Bakugo though, and was the one with the previous record at U.A., which was about 91.
Finally, there's Best Jeanist, who with his elegance, easily made it into U.A. based on recommendations.
Anyone else of significance who attended U.A. either had these three things happen to them:
1. They prioritized villain / rescue points (i.e. Bakugo or Izuku in the original storyline)
2. They got in via recommendations (Todoroki would DEFINITELY get more points than Bakugo in canon. He'd probably even cause the staff to have to redo the exam due to the OP nature of his quirk in the given scenario)
3. They simply weren't as strong before entering into U.A. (like Aizawa)
Keep in mind U.A. probably also has multiple different Entrance Exams to keep people guessing, so it's not just robots every time. Otherwise some people could get an unfair advantage (Izuku would probably find it on the internet), so the scoring metric isn't completely fair, as U.A. doesn't care about the high scores too much. Let's also say that due to parental complaints and World Government restrictions, the exam got easier over time.
Also, U.A. fact checks quirks to ensure they're not overkill for the type of exam they're running, and if a quirk they deem to be fine is later found out to be overkill, they may end up redoing the exam, scrapping that quirk's score, and admitting them into U.A.
With all that nonsense to explain my cliche and Mary Sue writing out of the way, here are the notable entrance exam scores are significantly different from the canon storyline (everyone would be different by 1-2 points, but everything's mostly consistent)
1. Tony Tony Chopper
He had 100 villain points, and 100 rescue points, adding up to a total of 200 points.
2. Izuku Midoriya
He had 34 villain points and 60 rescue points, adding up to a total of 94 points.
3. Katsuki Bakugo
He had 82 villain points and 5 rescue points, adding up to a total of 87 points.
~12/13. Ryuko Matoi
She had 46 villain points and 3 rescue points, adding up to a total of 49 points.
"Why is Chopper's score so high, this makes no sense!"
Let's put it this way: Base Gear Luffy is weaker than Zoro and Sanji at their own maximum power (Diable Jambe / sick ass sword skills no jutsu), and still beat All Might due to his Devil Fruit, fighting skills, and stamina.
Chopper, with his numerous transformations, is not that much weaker than Base Gear Luffy. Even at Sabaody before he did any major training, his strength was easily on par, perhaps it was even greater than most of Japan's Top 10 heroes. Remember: Chopper's a veteran pirate, regardless of his status as a member of the "Weakling Trio" on the Straw Hat crew. He's pretty strong.
Plus, he's a doctor whose dream is to save people. He is literally the perfect candidate for getting mad points on the Entrance Exam; he already has professional combat and rescue experience.
Tune in next time to see what everyone thinks of their fuzzy friend getting so many points ;)
