Will You Be My Valentine?

Ash Ketchum stood at his locker, staring blankly at the inside door, where his schedule and a few scattered photos were taped. His best friend Brock leaned against the locker beside him, a sly grin spreading across his face.

"You're overthinking this, Ash," Brock said. "She's just a girl."

Ash sighed, running a hand through his messy black hair. "She's not just a girl, Brock. She's May Maple… the May Maple. Popular, smart, gorgeous..."

"And single," Brock added, giving him a nudge. "Which means you have a shot. But you better make a move before someone else beats you to it."

That was the problem. Valentine's Day was only three days away, and Ash still hadn't mustered the courage to ask May to be his valentine. The thought of walking up to her in the busy halls of Pallet High was enough to make his stomach flip.

"She probably already has a dozen guys lined up to ask her," Ash muttered, shutting his locker with a sigh.

"You won't know unless you try," Brock encouraged. "And lucky for you, I have a foolproof plan."

Ash raised an eyebrow. "Oh no. What's the catch?"

"No catch," Brock said innocently. "Just trust me."

Brock's "foolproof plan" began at lunch. The cafeteria was buzzing with chatter, students swapping gossip and laughter echoing off the walls. Ash spotted May sitting at her usual table with Dawn, Misty, and Serena. They were laughing about something, their smiles lighting up the room.

"Okay, step one," Brock whispered, dragging Ash behind a column near the lunch line. "Start with small talk. You know, casual stuff. Compliment her. Be smooth."

"Be smooth," Ash repeated, gulping. "Got it."

"And don't trip over your words," Brock added with a smirk. "Or your feet."

Ignoring Brock's teasing, Ash grabbed his tray and made his way toward May's table. His heart pounded like a drum, and his palms felt clammy. As he approached, May looked up, her sapphire-blue eyes meeting his. She smiled, and Ash felt his knees go weak.

"Hey, Ash!" May greeted, her voice warm and cheerful. "What's up?"

"Oh, uh, hey, May," Ash stammered, nearly dropping his tray. "I, uh... just wanted to say hi."

"Smooth." Brock said peeping from a distance

May giggled, but not in a mocking way. "Hi! You look like you've got something on your mind."

"I—uh..." Ash's mind blanked for a moment. "Your hair looks really nice today, and you smell incredible also!"

May blinked in surprise, then smiled wider. "Thanks, Ash. That's sweet of you to say."

Dawn and Misty exchanged amused glances, but Ash barely noticed. "Well, um, I should probably—"

"Sit with us!" May said suddenly, scooting over to make room. "If you want to, that is."

Ash's heart nearly burst out of his chest. "Yeah, sure!"

He slid into the seat, trying not to look like he was freaking out internally. As the girls chatted, Ash found himself relaxing little by little. May was easy to talk to, and her laughter was contagious. Maybe Brock's plan wasn't so bad after all.

Later that day, Ash found Brock in the library, scribbling something in his notebook. "Okay," Ash said, plopping into the seat across from him. "Step one wasn't a total disaster. Now what?"

Brock looked up with a grin. "Step two: the big gesture."

"Big gesture?" Ash repeated, narrowing his eyes. "What are you plotting?"

"Relax," Brock said. "I'm talking about a valentine. Something creative. Something that shows May you're serious."

Ash frowned. "Like what? A card? Flowers?"

"Those are fine," Brock said, "but they're also basic. You need something unique. Something you."

Ash mulled it over. "What if I wrote her a note? Like, something from the heart?"

Brock nodded approvingly. "Now you're getting it. But don't just hand it to her. Make it special."

By the time the bell rang, Ash had a plan. He'd write May a heartfelt valentine and leave it in her locker, along with her favorite candy, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. It wasn't fancy, but it felt perfect.

The next morning, Ash was up early, carefully folding the note he'd stayed up half the night writing. He thought that if he was honest about how he felt it would be more than enough to win over the girl of his dreams. He put everything into a small Valentine gift bag and headed to school, his heart racing.

With Brock's help, Ash managed to slip the valentine into May's locker before anyone else arrived. "Now all we have to do is wait," Brock said, clapping him on the back. "Piece of cake."

"Yeah, sure," Ash muttered, his nerves eating him alive.

The day dragged on, every class feeling longer than the last. By lunchtime, Ash was a bundle of anxiety. Had May found the valentine? What did she think? Did she even know it was from him?

As he approached the cafeteria, Ash spotted May standing by her locker, the valentine in her hands. She was smiling, her cheeks tinged pink. His heart soared.

But before he could approach her, Drew, the ultimate ladies' man strolled up to May with his signature smirk.

"Hey, May," Drew said smoothly. "I was hoping I'd catch you before lunch."

Ash froze, watching as Drew handed May a bouquet of roses. She looked surprised but not entirely displeased.

"You've got to be kidding me," Ash muttered under his breath.

Brock appeared at his side, frowning. "Don't let him psych you out, Ash. May's smart. She'll see through Drew's act."

"Yeah, but what if she doesn't?" Ash said, his confidence wavering.

Determined not to give up, Ash waited until the end of the day to talk to May. He found her by her locker again, this time alone. Summoning every ounce of courage he had, Ash approached her.

"Hey, May," he said, his voice steadier than he expected.

May turned to him, her smile brightening. "Hi, Ash! Thanks for the valentine. It was so sweet of you."

Ash's heart skipped a beat. "You knew it was from me?"

"Of course," May said with a laugh. "Who else would write something so thoughtful?"

Ash rubbed the back of his neck, his cheeks burning. "I'm glad you liked it. I, uh, wasn't sure if it was too much."

"Not at all," May said. "It was perfect and romantic in every way."

Before Ash could say anything else, Drew appeared out of nowhere, his smirk firmly in place. "Hey, May. Ready to go?"

May hesitated, glancing between Ash and Drew. "Um... actually, I—"

"It's fine," Ash said quickly, stepping back. "You guys have fun."

May looked like she wanted to say something, but Drew was already steering her away. Ash watched them go, his chest tight.

That night, Ash lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling. He felt like an idiot for getting his hopes up. What chance did he have against someone like Drew?

His phone buzzed, snapping him out of his thoughts. It was a text from May.

"Hey, can we talk tomorrow? :)"

Ash stared at the message, his heart pounding. Maybe all wasn't lost after all.

After he responded he quickly dozed off to bed

The next day, May found Ash before class. "Hey," she said, smiling nervously. "About yesterday... I'm sorry if I made things awkward."

"You didn't," Ash said quickly. "I justI wasn't sure what you wanted."

May hesitated, then took a deep breath. "Drew's a nice guy, but... I don't feel that way about him. I told him that last night."

Ash blinked. "You did?"

"Yeah," May said. "Because there's someone else I like. Someone who's kind and funny and thoughtful."

Ash's heart stopped. "Really?"

May nodded, her cheeks turning pink. "Yeah. And if he still wants to be my valentine... I'd say yes."

Ash broke into a grin. "So, um," Ash began, rubbing the back of his neck. "Would you… would you be my valentine?"

May's smile grew, and she nodded. "I'd love to."

Ash felt a wave of relief and joy wash over him. "Really?"

May laughed, her eyes sparkling. "Absolutely, actually I'm happy you ended up asking me because I was hoping you'd also ask me to the Valentine's dance."

"If that's the case, will you do me the honor of escorting me to the Valentines Ball, also my Valentine," Ash said, feeling like he was walking on air.

"I thought you'd never ask." May said. "I'd love to go to the dance with you Ash." she said with a blush on her face.

"That's awesome!" Ash said, unable to contain his excitement. "I mean, cool. That's cool."

May giggled. "You're so cute when you're nervous."

The bell rang, signaling the start of the next class. May gave Ash a quick hug and kiss before heading to her classroom. "I'll see you at the dance tonight," she said with a wink.

Ash stood there for a moment, grinning like an idiot. He couldn't believe it, May had said yes! It felt like all the anxiety and doubt had been worth it.

Brock appeared beside him, clapping a hand on his shoulder. "See? Told you it'd work out."

"Yeah," Ash said, his grin widening. "Guess I owe you one, huh?"

"Don't worry about it buddy." Brock said as they both headed off to first period.
