Elementary Love

It was a crisp morning in Pallet Town, the sun shining brightly through the windows of Petalburg Elementary. The excitement was at an all time high as students walked into the schoolyard, holding their backpacks tightly, their faces bright with the anticipation of the day ahead. For Ash Ketchum, however, today was more than just another school day. Today was Valentine's Day. And he had a very important question to ask.

Ash stood by the school gates, tapping his foot nervously. His hands fidgeted with the straps of his backpack, his mind racing with thoughts of one person in particular. May Maple. His classmate. His friend. His crush.

"Come on, Ash," he muttered to himself. "You can do this."

It had been a few weeks since he realized that his feelings for May had changed. What started as friendship had blossomed into something more, something he didn't quite understand, but something he knew was special. They had spent hours playing in the schoolyard, sharing snacks, and even traded lunches together constantly. He knew nothing about love but every time he saw May, his heart raced in a way it never had before.

Today, with Valentine's Day finally here, he couldn't keep his feelings bottled up any longer. He had decided that he would ask May to be his Valentine.

As he stood there, his mind racing, the school bell rang, signaling the start of the day. Ash took one last deep breath and entered the classroom.

The classroom buzzed with excitement as kids piled into their seats. The desks were decorated with pink and red construction paper hearts, and the walls were covered in Valentine's Day-themed art projects. The air smelled faintly of chocolate and the sweet aroma of the cupcakes that had been brought in for the class party later that afternoon.

Ash found his seat next to his best friend, Brock, who immediately noticed Ash's nervous energy.

"Hey buddy, what's up with you today?" Brock whispered with a grin. "You look like you're about to puke from eating too fast."

Ash flushed red. "It's… it's nothing. I just have something important to do today."

Brock raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah, for your little girlfriend huh?" He said teasingly.

Ash's heart skipped a beat. "What? No, not at all!" he blurted, but Brock's knowing look told him everything. Ash quickly glanced around the room, spotting May sitting at her desk, chatting with Dawn and Misty, as usual. She was wearing a light pink cardigan with her favorite flower pin attached to it, and her hair was pulled back into a cute ponytail. She looked as sweet as ever, and Ash's nervousness returned.

Brock nudged him. "You're going to ask her, aren't you? You should totally do it. It's Valentine's Day!"

Ash hesitated. "I don't know. What if she says no? What if it's awkward?"

Brock chuckled. "If you don't try, you'll never know. Besides, I'm pretty sure she likes you too."

Ash looked back at May, his heart fluttering in his chest. "I hope so."

The bell rang, signaling the beginning of class, Mr. Oak, their teacher, stood at the front of the room with a wide smile on his face. "Good morning, class! Today is a special day, isn't it?"

The class erupted into excited chatter. "Yes!"

"Do we know what that special day is called?" He asked the class

"They all shouted in response. "It's Valentine's Day!"

"That's right!" Mr. Oak continued. "We have a fun day ahead of us. But first, I'd like to remind everyone about our class Valentine's exchange. Don't forget to pass out your cards during recess. And after that, we'll have a Valentine's Day party with snacks and games!"

Ash's heart skipped a beat at the mention of the Valentine's exchange. This was it. This was his chance. He couldn't back out now.

He reached into his backpack, pulling out the small, heart-shaped card he had carefully picked out the day before. He had spent hours in the store with his mom, trying to find the perfect card for May. The one he chose had a cute little Pikachu and Eevee on the front, with the words, "We're the perfect match! Will you be my Valentine?"

It was cheesy, yes, but Ash thought it was perfect. It was lighthearted and fun, just like their friendship. But more than that, it was a way for him to show May how much she meant to him.

His palms were sweating as he placed the card on his desk, eyes glued to it. "Okay," he whispered to himself. "This is it."

The rest of the morning passed in a blur as Ash tried to focus on the lessons, but his mind kept drifting back to the Valentine's exchange. Finally, the bell rang for recess, and Ash stood up quickly, his heart racing. He grabbed his card, carefully holding it between his fingers, and made his way over to May's desk.

"Hey, May," he said, trying to sound casual, but his voice came out a little squeaky.

May looked up from her conversation with Dawn and Misty, her eyes lighting up when she saw him. "Oh, hey, Ash! What's up?"

Ash gulped, his throat dry. "Uh, I just wanted to give you something." He handed her the Valentine's card, feeling his cheeks flush red. "Happy Valentine's Day."

May took the card with a smile, her eyes softening as she looked at it. "Aww, Ash, this is so cute! I love the Pikachu and Eevee!."

Ash smiled nervously. "Yeah, I thought you might like it."

Then, to his surprise, May leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek. "Thanks, Ash. That was really sweet of you and of course I'll be your Valentine!"

Ash stood there, frozen, as May returned to talking with her friends. His heart was pounding in his chest, and he felt a heat spread across his face. Had that just happened? Had May just kissed him on the cheek?

"Did she really do that?" Ash mumbled to himself, feeling both elated and confused at the same time.

Brock approached with a grin. "Well, that went better than I expected."

Ash could barely speak. "Did you see that? She kissed me!"

Brock chuckled. "I told you she likes you. Now what are you going to do?"

Ash blinked, still in shock. "I don't know… maybe I'll just wait for the party. I'll give her the other thing I got her later."

Brock raised an eyebrow. "The other thing? What are you talking about?"

Ash looked around to make sure no one was listening. Then, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper. It was a simple handwritten note: "May, I think you're the best friend anyone could have. I'm really happy you came into my life."

Brock's eyes widened. "Whoa, Ash, that's sweet. I think she'll love it."

"Thanks, Brock," Ash said, feeling a little more confident now. "I hope so."

As recess continued, Ash and May shared laughs and exchanged Valentine's cards with their classmates. But for Ash, the best part of the day came when the class party began. They gathered around the table filled with cupcakes, cookies, and candy. Everyone was laughing, talking, and enjoying the moment, but Ash kept sneaking glances at May. He hadn't yet gathered the courage to give her the note, but he knew the right moment would come.

Finally, as the party wound down and everyone was preparing to go back to class, Ash saw his chance. He walked over to May, who was sitting by the window, eating a cookie.

"Hey, May," he said softly.

May looked up with a smile. "Hey, Ash. What's up?"

Ash held out the note. "I, uh, wrote something for you."

May took the note, her smile widening as she read it. Her heart fluttered in her chest as she finished reading, looking up at Ash with a soft expression. "Ash, this is… so sweet. Thank you."

Ash smiled shyly. "You're welcome."

And as the bell rang to signal the end of the school day, Ash realized that Valentine's Day had been more perfect than he could've ever imagined. He had spent it with May, his best friend, his crush, and now, his Valentine.
