No Apologies

Shisui let himself into Itachi's office and plopped himself into the chair for visitors. "So, what the fuck happened yesterday?"
"What do you mean?" Itachi's slender fingers continued to move rapidly across his computer's keyboard.
"Aunt Mikoto, Uncle Fugaku and Sasuke are blowing up my phone. Your assistant says that all three are calling incessantly and you aren't taking their calls. They say they want to apologize." Shisui leaned forward "What. Happened."
Itachi took a deep breath and stopped typing. He saved his work then turned to his cousin while leaning back in his chair. "What happened? Obviously since yesterday was Sunday, it was the weekly Family Dinner. Naruko couldn't make it because something came up at work."
Shisui snorted. That was certainly an understatement. Itachi's girlfriend, Naruko Uzumaki, worked for Konoha's mayor. And two days before, three members of the City Council had been arrested for trying to arrange the assassination of the mayor, Tsunade Senju. There were also numerous charges of corruption as well. The shit coming from City Hall was thick and spreading. Both Itachi and Shisui worked for the District Attorney's Office but weren't involved in the corruption case. Rumors had it that there were going to be more arrests. Arrests of some pretty prominent citizens.
Both men had a pretty good idea as to whom one Prominent Citizen might be.
Itachi continued "Even though my workload has tripled, I still went. I needed a break. It was Mother and Father as well as Sasuke and Sakura. Most of the discussion was about the wedding plans."
Shisui nodded. He had been calling it 'The Wedding of the Century' out of the hearing of everyone in the family except Itachi, who wouldn't laugh, but who's black eyes gleamed with laughter when he'd hear it.
"Just before dessert was served, I got a text from Naruko. She was outside with some gifts that had been given to her to deliver to Sasuke and Sakura. She needed help bringing them in. So, I excused myself from the table and went out to give her a hand. We came back in just in time to hear Sasuke say 'I don't get what Itachi sees in her.' And then Sakura piped up with 'Those scars make her look so ugly and she's fat!'"
Shisui winced. Naruko had been struck by a hit-and-run driver a year ago and it had taken a while for her to heal. She was just now getting consults with various plastic surgeons to get rid of the last of the facial scarring. And she wasn't fat. If anything, she was underweight.
Itachi continued "Then we had the joy of hearing Mother say, 'Itachi's still trying to get over Izumi.'"
"She left you five years ago!"
Itachi cast a sardonic look on his cousin and resumed speaking "And, of course, Father had to put in his opinion 'She has no family so she's just not good enough for Itachi. I've been looking for someone more suitable.'"
Shisui shook his head. "What did Naruko do?"
"She just stood there in shock. Then tears just began rolling down her cheeks." Itachi rubbed at his face. His beloved Naruko was an orphan that had been found abandoned in the bathroom of a fast-food restaurant. She had never been adopted. She had started working when she was only 12 years old, but she managed to graduate from high school and college. Now she was the personal assistant to Mayor Senju. When he introduced her to his parents, they had embraced her and welcomed her into their family.
Or so he had thought.
"She walked into the dining room. Dumped the presents on the table. Turned and walked out."
"Good for her. What did you do?"
"I dumped that shit on the floor. Looked at the assholes and said, 'Fuck you!' and followed my girlfriend out the door. So, my so-called family can take their apologies and shove them up their asses."
Shisui laughed. "And I'm guessing you blocked all of them. Which is why they're all calling me."
"Phone, social media, everything. They can go to hell. I love Naruko. She's my life."
Shisui stared at Itachi for a moment. "You're going to marry her." Statement. Not a question.
"Yes."
"Will your family be invited?"
"At this point. FUCK no!" Itachi looked at his hands that were clenched into fists and managed to relax them. "After I ask her, I'm going to ask her if she wants Tsunade to marry us."
"Mayor Senju will have your balls if you don't ask her for Naruko's hand first."
Itachi grinned "Already did that."
"Okay, then she's going to have your family's collective balls for hurting Naruko?!"
The smile Shisui received was more than slightly edged with malice. "Oh, the Mayor is going to collect more than their proverbial balls."
Shisui leaned back in the chair. While neither one of them were working on the Shimura, Mitokado and Utatane cases, clearly someone had dropped a word in Itachi's ear. But Shisui had been out of the office for most of the morning and hadn't heard anything new about the cases. "Tell me!"
