Please Don't Leave Me : Chapter 3 : [ Still Fighting ]

Several hours went by , and still Betsy stayed by Randy's bedside , trying her best to get his fever down , and comforting him when he was restless. '' Betsy , Betsy , where are you'' , ; Randy whispered in his sleep. I'm here , Randy , ; Betsy said softly , giving his hand a gentle squeeze.

Ssh , now , go back to sleep , ; Betsy said , brushing his forehead with her fingertips. Relieved , Betsy continued to bathe his forehead with the cloth to try and bring the fever down. '' Can I come in , Betsy '' ? ; The Virginian whispered from where he'd been standing. Please come in , ; Betsy whispered softly when she saw him. How's Randy doing , Betsy ? ; The Virginian asked as he sat down. He's fighting it , Virginian , ; Betsy said softly. He's still pretty warm , but not as much as he was three hours ago , ; Betsy said.

I just know it in my heart that he'll make it , Virginian , ; Betsy said softly. Randy's a strong young man in more ways than one , Betsy , ; The Virginian said. He'll pull through , especially with you for a nurse, ; The Virginian said. Thanks , Virginian , ; Betsy said softly. Can he hear what we say to him , Betsy ? ; The Virginian asked. I'm certain he can , Virginian , ; Betsy said with a small smile. I know he's aware of what I say because every so often he'll squeeze my hand in his sleep , ; Betsy said softly. I'm sure you're right , Betsy , ; The Virginian said , smiling softly. In all this time , he has'nt wanted me to let go , ; Betsy said , gesturing to Randy's hand still holding fast to hers. How was he hurt , Virginian ? ; Betsy asked. One of the rustlers fired at me , and the bullet missed me , but it hit Randy , ; The Virginian replied. I just feel bad that it got him instead of me , Betsy , ; The Virginian said.

It was no one's fault , Virginian , ; Betsy said. I know , Betsy , ; The Virginian replied. Is there anything I can do , Betsy ? ; The Virginian asked. Yes , you can bring me a fresh basin of water , ; Betsy replied. Alright , Betsy , I'll be right back , ; The Virginian replied. And if you'd like me to sit with him , let me know , ; The Virginian said. I will , Virginian , ; Betsy replied. I'll be back , ; The Virginian said as he left. '' How's Randy doing , Virginian '' ? ; the Judge asked when The Virginian came into the kitchen. He's fighting it , Judge , ; The Virginian said as he filled the basin. Betsy sent me for some fresh water , ; The Virginian said when he was finished. You be sure to sit with him if Betsy gets tired , alright ? ; the Judge said. I will , Judge , if Betsy'll let me , ; The Virginian said. It'll take some doing to get her to leave Randy now , ; The Virginian added.

That sounds like Betsy , ; the Judge remarked. Is Randy's fever down any ? ; the Judge asked. Somewhat , Judge , from what Betsy told me , ; The Virginian replied. I hope Randy pulls through , Virginian , ; the Judge said worriedly. Me too , Judge , ; The Virginian replied. Well , I'd better take this water to Betsy now , ; The Virginian said. I'll see you later , then , ; the Judge said as The Virginian left and went upstairs. Here's your fresh water , Betsy , ; The Virginian said when he came into the room. Thanks , Virginian , ; Betsy said as she dipped the cloth in and wrung it out. What time is it , Virginian ? ; Betsy asked. It's past suppertime , Betsy , ; The Virginian replied. I seem to have lost track of time since you brought Randy up here , ; Betsy said as she worked. You always do when something like this happens , ; The Virginian said.
