Chapter 2
Humanity was capable of many things, both the best and the worst. But when it worked hand in hand, the results exceeded the wildest dreams! At least that was what the newly promoted Admiral James Cutter thought, dressed in a brand new white uniform. It had been unanimously decided that since they only had one ship in their possession and Cutter was the only person to have commanded multiple spacecraft, he would be the Chief Admiral of the UNSC. His service record being more than exceptional to top it all off, there was no one better on the entire planet.
If history had proven that Humanity was skilled at destruction, the last 6 months, on the other hand, had been a good demonstration that they were equally capable of building and creating a great civilization! The various operations around the globe had gone relatively well, the armed forces had managed to neutralize terrorist cells and other revolutionary movements, however, it had highlighted what Admiral Cutter feared. One of the operations aimed at defeating a fanatic sect in the state of Washington - and although the operation was a success - had allowed them to meet someone named Seth, the said leader turned out to be of the same race as Ra. Although the individual was not captured alive, the autopsy of his corpse had confirmed Dr. O'Neil's hypothesis, which the return to Abydos had allowed to identify as Goa'uld, a race of parasitic aliens that took control of hosts to move freely.
The Goa'uld themselves are small serpent-like symbiotes that have evolved to require the body of a host. Once they burrow into the body (which can be accomplished by piercing the skin of the neck), the parasite begins to wrap around the human spine. The symbiote then weaves itself around the nervous system, where fine filaments extend up into the brain itself. By parasitizing its host, the creature used their technological superiority to establish a false cult by passing itself off as gods! And this knowledge worried Cutter immensely !
Speaking of Abydos, the return of a team had greatly surprised the Abydossians as well as Dr. Jackson, but not as much as when he learned what had happened on Earth and even more when he found out that his asylum request on Abydos was denied and that he was hired as a specialist in the Egyptian language and thus Goa'uld.
Thanks to Colonel O'Neill and the death of Ra, the inhabitants of Earth were well received and allowed to stay. Thus, Abydos became the first other world inhabited by the people of Earth, located about 300 light-years from Earth, it had become the most distant inhabited world that the UNSC had ever colonized! While the people of Abydos had become the first foreign people with whom they established diplomatic exchanges, they particularly appreciated food resources and infrastructure that helped them cope with the planet's desert environment. In exchange, the Pyramid of Ra had been given to the UNSC and had today become a fortified base, while the Naquadah and Trinium mines had since been exploited by Earth's much more efficient machines. These minerals with fascinating properties had brought joy to Cutter and Anders, but also to the countries that until then had been in the oil industry.
That was also another indirect problem that the arrival of the Spirit had caused. The revelation of the technological wonders of future centuries had been received differently depending on their field of expertise. Electric and hydrogen cars had been a great blow for the countries that made a fortune from their oil, but fortunately, the modernization of the entire planet required a considerable workforce, so they initially chose to transition into construction and assembly companies. The Hardlight Materializer, operating day and night at full capacity, only accelerated operations further. But thanks to the opportunities offered by space travel, these companies had already begun steps to develop in the future as mining excavators in the asteroid belt of the solar system. The discovery of minerals such as Naquadah and Trinium had allowed them to expand their field of activity. The creation of secondary branches dedicated to this had led them to sign a contract with the UNSC to exploit deposits for the future military technologies of the people of Earth, at an acceptable price, of course! If this motivated these countries to accept the UEG, then Cutter was satisfied.
The medical fields had been delighted thanks to the remedy for numerous serious diseases or the advances in the treatment of physical injuries, such as Biomousse, which was a self-sealing coagulant that fills the space and an antimicrobial foam polymer that regenerates tissues, used by the United Nations Space Command as a form of medical first aid. This foam keeps damaged organs in place and helps stop bleeding and hemorrhages. The medicinal compound is morphophetamine in a liquid medium of ethyl triphosphate free of nitrous oxide. When applied, the polyethyltriphosphate and nitrous oxide mix to create a foaming effect that can encapsulate, disinfect, and numb wounds, or the bone polymer can be injected through a cauterized incision and begin to promote bone healing.
At the industrial level, with Instacrete and Titanium-A, things were going in the right direction. At first, many companies that didn't take the UEG seriously took things lightly; however, the threat of having their company seized and the government taking over the reconstruction in their place made them step up their game! From then on, the results doubled in speed and efficiency, unemployment decreased like never before, the large slums and other dumps began to be cleaned up, the enthusiasm was such that today one of them has been transformed into a large city reminiscent of New Alexandria for the crew of the Spirit. A proof of what humans were capable of, if they were able to build such a city in such a short time, then they could do anything!
However, the construction of the orbital elevators and the shipyard won't begin until at least the middle of next year. For now, Cutter was aiming for the reformation of the UNSC by the end of the year. Equipment such as vehicles, weapons, and other materials had been rolling off the assembly line for over a month now to be converted into typical UNSC military equipment. Different types of vehicles like the Warthog, Mongoose, Scorpion tank, and others were already in production.
The most reliable weapons had begun to be produced for each sector of the army: the MA5D would become the assault rifle for the regular ground forces, its 60-round fragmentation shell magazine, versatility, and ruggedness making it a weapon of choice for long campaigns. The MA5K, on the other hand, would become the rifle dedicated to the SG units of the newly launched Stargate program. This compact and lightweight weapon featured a 50-round magazine with armor-piercing rounds. Given that it had been discovered that the Stargate network extended throughout the galaxy, the purpose of this weapon was to enable exploration and first contact teams to defend themselves while appearing as non-threatening as possible! From the same lineage as the MA37, a new, more powerful weapon had also been developed, the MA40! Reserved for ODST and SPARTAN units, this weapon, with its significantly higher rate of fire compared to other assault rifles, makes it a particularly formidable weapon! The BR75 battle rifle, the SRS99-AM sniper rifle, shotgun, SMG, machine guns, the M739 SAW, Spartan laser M6, M41 SPNKR rocket launcher, M6, and any other weapon would also be mass-produced.
All the other technologies, whether in audiovisual, music, and many others, were literally given by the Spirit! Cutter didn't care about the rights, if these companies wanted to keep the monopoly in certain areas, good for them! But despite everything, there were things that had not been revealed, like the Flash clone for example! Although Earth had already made great strides, there was still much to be done, particularly the elections for the new UEG. The lie detector tests on the candidates had taken place and had revealed a record, the former senator Robert Kinsey was a power-hungry man, so much so that he had overheated the lie detector, needless to say, he was immediately blacklisted! But now that the tests were over, the campaigns could now begin in their respective countries, although the elections themselves wouldn't take place until the beginning of next year, things were progressing for the better!
….
On the bridge of the Spirit of Fire, Admiral Cutter was reading reports on various discoveries made over the past few months. The ancient base was largely inaccessible to them, its energy source visibly empty, the energy requirements to make it operational far exceeded what they could provide with their current technology, even fusion reactors were not powerful enough. In a way, this reassured Cutter because it meant that this ancient people were as advanced as he had hoped. However, they had still managed to provide enough power to activate certain control panels and computers.
With an architecture that bore a certain resemblance to theirs, albeit more graceful and elegant, the UNSC had begun trying to create their own crystal computer from those in Antarctica, and the initial results were truly very conclusive. A first prototype had been produced, and the results were beyond all expectations. The power of an intelligent AI like Serina had saved them a colossal amount of time, as she didn't need rest and had the ability to work 24/7, achieving it in record time !
The UNSC now uses flat, clear crystals with complex patterns. Reorganizing the arrangements of the crystals will produce different results from those of the device, or even completely prevent it from functioning. Their role seemed comparable to that of punched cards or the old terrestrial printed circuits.
While the outpost denied them most of its secrets, they had still found some technology to study, such as the stasis pods that would allow them to improve their own, but above all, a small spacecraft! With a length of 8 meters and approximately 3 meters in height, this spacecraft capable of space travel had undoubtedly been designed to traverse the Stargate. His study taught them several things, first: these ancients were specialists in mind control to manipulate their technology, second: There was an integrated DNA reader that prevented anyone without their gene from using their equipment. After comparing the DNA of various people from the population at random and the DNA of certain inhabitants of Abydos, it was revealed that for the moment, all tested people from Earth naturally possessed this gene, while the Abydossians did not, which was strange because the people of Abydos were former humans from Earth taken by Ra. The hypotheses put forward were that either the Goa'uld had modified the DNA of their humans to meet their needs, as they had done for their Jaffa, or that centuries of mixing far from their original world had caused them to lose this gene! It had been decided that this security measure offered on a silver platter would be kept, why complicate things when in the end they were given a simple solution already found !
The ship had also offered them the possibility of a new space propulsion, the Sublight Engine! This discovery would allow them to move in normal space without exceeding the speed of light much faster than with their Fusion engine! Inertial dampers much more effective than theirs, combined with optical camouflage, the discovery of this device offered major prospects. However, the UNSC's greatest weakness remained unchanged: the lack of energy shields for their fleet, and for Cutter, this had to be resolved! Fortunately, Serina had discovered that the outpost possessed a defense shield, but as long as they had not found a sufficiently powerful energy source to fully activate this outpost, its study was impossible.
But it was no longer time for him to complain about what they didn't have and to make the best of what they possessed. Rising, he headed towards the exit, greeted by crew members, he returned their greetings with a smile. Things weren't so bad after all; with the elections underway and the UNSC forces being reformed, he had the means to get moving !
(Terre/Colorado/Cheyenne Mountain)
The Cheyenne Mountain base was unlike any other base she had seen until today, with the Stargate program now part of a fully-fledged branch of the UNSC. A new base at the pinnacle of technology had been built inside and around the mountain (for appearance, imagine the Sword base in Halo Reach). The base extended over several levels, with the gate itself at the deepest level. The upper part was divided into several wings: the research and development wing consisted of various laboratories that would allow the study of technologies brought back through the gate; the personnel wing and the upper levels even protruded in places from the mountain's flank, comprising numerous offices, training rooms, the mess hall, personnel quarters, and even two hangars. One of the hangars housed a wide range of ground vehicles, from different types of Warthogs to Mongoose, as well as a crane to bring them to the new boarding room. The second hangar was located at the top, carved into the mountain's flank to accommodate Pelicans. At the cutting edge of technology with bio-scanners and advanced AI, this base was one of the best workplaces she had ever had !
Captain Samantha Carter was swimming in pure science fiction. When the first man set foot on the moon in 1969, space travel remained a myth for everyone, an unattainable chimera for the common person, reserved for a few rare chosen ones, until the arrival of the Spirit of Fire! After the arrival of the imposing ship, she joined one of the SG teams of the Stargate program a few months later, personally chosen by the Admiral for her skills in astrophysics and quantum mechanics. She had been assigned to work on the Stargate program in 1993 and was a prominent member of the study of the underlying sciences and the development of the Earth Dialing computer. She had crossed the gate for the first time a month ago, having been part of the team that returned to Abydos to study the pyramid, and now under the command of General George Hammond, she had joined SG1 alongside Dr. Daniel Jackson, Major Charles Kawalsky, and under the orders of Colonel Jack O'Neill.
«Sam…!»
She turned just in time to see Daniel heading towards her as their team had an appointment for a visit from the UNSC Commander-in-Chief. "Daniel!" How are you?
As he came within reach, he stepped aside to avoid a staff member who was about to bump into him. "Uh..." Well, I've spent the last few weeks receiving various apology messages from those who mocked my theories on pyramids; apparently, they seem to want to work with me! he said, putting his hands in his pockets with an ironic and bitter smile on his face, visibly upset by so much hypocrisy, "...and you?" Ignoring the clumsy man, he resumed his walk beside his teammate as they approached the elevator.
Great! I really haven't had time to be bored lately! she said as they found themselves alone in the elevator, which began its descent to the heart of the mountain where the Stargate and the briefing room were located "And by the way, how is Sha're?"
Surprised by the question, he adjusted his glasses before answering, "Well... she decided to come live on Earth with me!" She will arrive next week! Honestly, he hadn't expected his wife to be ready to leave Abydos to come to Earth, and even less that it would be her who asked him to do so. He loved her very much and had complete trust in her. She would adapt very well to Earth, and he could easily see her taking care of children, which she adored.
Giving him a smile, she replied, "I'm happy for you, I hope she will acclimate well to Earth."
Taking a hand out of one of his pockets, he adjusted his glasses while giving her a grateful smile, "By the way, do you know what this morning's briefing will be about?"
"The Admiral is coming to the base today!" She replied with a tighter smile, embarrassed that he was unaware of something as important as the visit from the highest authority of the armed forces in their world. Realization and surprise covered the archaeologist's face as he indeed remembered that they had been informed at the beginning of the week. They quickly arrived upstairs where they could see that Charles Kawalsky and Jack O'Neill were already waiting for them. The senior officers of their team stopped their conversation to come greet them.
"Captain!" Daniel!» Jack's casual greeting came as Charles nodded to them with a knowing smile.
"My Colonel!" Major! It was Samantha's formal greeting.
"Hi you two!" While Carter was an army officer, she was required to salute her superiors with respect, even if they had become her friends. Daniel, on the other hand, was no longer a civilian and had joined the ONI, and he was therefore also required to address his superiors by their rank. But alas, despite several months, this seemed impossible for the archaeologist.
Used to this kind of thing, the team headed towards the briefing room while starting various conversations on different topics. Upon arrival, they noticed that they were among the last to arrive, the rest of SG team already present. It seemed that all SGC personnel wanted to make a good impression in front of the Admiral, who, interestingly, was one of the few, along with General Hammond, who had not yet arrived. The briefing room - although still in the same place as before - had received a technological upgrade, notably a new model of Holotank. This new model turned out to be a small diamond-shaped crystal discreetly embedded in the table. It could display holographic images of various sizes, which could be shown to people around the table or in a large format for meetings in the entire room. The table also had an area where an identical holographic table was set up, capable of displaying images representing operational terrains identical to those present aboard UNSC ships.
Finding a place among all the available seats, SG1 ended up, in an unknown manner, at the front. Clearly, although all the teams wanted to make a good impression in front of the Admiral, none wanted to face him directly. No one could blame them, however, after all, they were about to meet the highest authority of the UNSC, a man who, if he wanted, could appoint them to lead a fleet or to scrub toilets until the end of their careers!
A lot of pressure on their shoulder.
(Cheyenne Mountain/ Upper Hangars)
General George Hammond, successor to General Wo at the head of the Stargate program, could be found in the upper hangar of his base waiting for the arrival of Admiral Cutter's Pelican. With his arms at his sides and an appearance that might seem relaxed, he was moving and rubbing his fingers together actively, a bad habit he had taken up when he was nervous or stressed. The aircraft entered his field of vision, coming through the immense doors, maneuvering so that the nose of the craft was facing the door, ready to depart. It then landed with a delicacy and precision that should normally be impossible for this type of craft, or anything that wasn't a helicopter, for that matter. Hammond, ready for the imminent meeting, instinctively straightened his back even more, if that was possible!
The ramp of the pelican lowered as Cutter descended, accompanied by a young woman Hammond had never seen before. "Admiral !" He saluted with a perfect military salute, and the moment the Admiral's eyes fell on him, Hammond immediately knew that Cutter was as exceptional a man as he had imagined. His way of judging him, of estimating him, this man was a true leader, determined to carry the armed forces of this planet so that when the time came, the Covenants would regret having wanted to take on the humans of Earth.
"General Hammond, delighted to see you again !" How are things going around here? Asked Cutter after saluting him with a well-practiced and refined level of formality that was warm without being too familiar; the precisely correct tone that a senior officer should adopt towards a general.
Breathing for the first time in 5 minutes, he replied more calmly, "Very well, sir, the base is operational and the teams are trained and ready to cross the Gate !" Hammond would consider it a major personal victory that he hadn't started sweating in the presence of the highest authority of the UNSC.
With a nod of appreciation, Cutter turned slightly to the side, "General, allow me to introduce Professor Ellen Anders, currently at the head of the Office of Naval Intelligence and responsible for managing all the branches that make up the ONI !"
« General ! Delighted to finally meet you ! » And she really wanted it, when the Spirit arrived on Earth announcing to the world their intention to unify the planet and recreate the UEG and the UNSC, General George Hammond was one of the first to openly support a united people and had been within the American army their greatest supporter, using all his connections and friendships to lend weight and credibility to the Spirit crew. When Wo had requested his reassignment to the future space marine, a new commander had to be appointed to the Stargate program, and when Cutter saw Hammond's name among the many volunteers who had requested this assignment, he didn't hesitate for a second to choose him. For Anders, Hammond was an upright man with a morality he greatly admired, the complete opposite of a certain Catherine Halsey.
"Hello Professor !" "Welcome to the SGC, the teams are ready for the meeting as you ordered, Admiral!" He said as he showed them the way to the lift, taking the lead of the group, he led them there while a soldier used his access card to open the door for them.
"So, General, what do you think of the men and women under your command ?" Feel the slight movement of the elevator indicating their descent into the complex.
Hammond replied, "Incredibly competent, I must say, they are the best in their field, to the point where I sometimes feel like I'm the one who's not up to par!" But I don't regret a single second of being here! He finished with a smile.
Cutter returned it to him with one of his own, laden with understanding. "It's a feeling I know very well !"
Arriving at their destination, the doors opened onto a corridor where they began to head towards their meeting place. Approaching the room, they could distinguish various chatter coming from the people inside. "Attention!" The call to order from a soldier at the door indicated to everyone that the VIP had arrived, and as one, everyone stood at attention.
"Rest ! Rest !" Calmly, everyone sat down at one of the places around the table while Cutter, Anders, and Hammond stood facing everyone. "Not insulting your intelligence by assuming you don't know why you're here, let me get straight to the point !" Starting tomorrow and for the coming years, your role will be to explore different planets across the galaxy through the Stargate. Your mission, beyond reconnaissance, will be to find new technologies, plants, or other ecosystems likely to help us improve our society, but first and foremost, to meet and establish contact with other races for potential diplomatic relations !
Raising his hand, Jack O'Neill was given the floor. "Another race, sir ?!"
With a nod, Cutter resumed speaking. "Indeed, Colonel!" "Serina!..." At his call, the holotank activated as the small AI appeared on the table. Without a word from her, she made a graceful gesture with her hand, and the holotank increased in power to project a large hologram onto a certain part of the room's ceiling. The hologram was a representation of the Milky Way galaxy, with two points labeled Earth and Abydos. "As you know, during our research in Ra's pyramid, we found a room filled with a series of symbols..." Making another gesture with her hand, Serina made numerous red dots appear all over the galaxy. "As you can see, this is a network of active gates that we obtained from the Abydos cartouche. These worlds are more than likely to be controlled by the Goa'uld!" Then once again, Serina modified the galaxy, and this time, many more blue points spread out. Cutter then resumed once more, "…and these are the addresses we obtained from the outpost in Antarctica."
However, the Admiral could not continue because Daniel interrupted him. "I thought it was the Goa'uld who created the Stargate, how come there are gates they don't know about?!"
"Because they are not the ones who invented this technology, Dr. Jackson!" This time it was Ellen who spoke up, seeing that she wanted to continue. Cutter gave her the floor. "During our drilling at the Antarctic outpost, we came across a cryogenic module..." Understanding the silent message, Serina made various photos appear beside her showing the capsule with a person inside. "As you can see, there was a person inside. After taking all the necessary precautions, we managed to bring them out of stasis and discovered that they were still alive!"
This time, a stunned silence enveloped the entire room in the face of something so improbable. "You mean to say we have a member of this race among us?!" The comment brought a pained and sorrowful look to Anders and Cutter's faces.
Ellen then took the floor again. "Alas no, it turned out she was carrying an incredibly deadly and resistant virus that despite all our efforts we were unable to cure." After her refusal to return to stasis, she passed away after one week !….. But throughout that week, she taught us so much! Catching her breath, she continued, "Her people were called the Altérans, and they lived in this galaxy 15 million years ago!" With a major technological advancement, they possessed brains far more evolved than ours! This young woman now identified as Cyla Urbanus even possessed the ability to heal by touch. Pausing briefly to let them absorb the information, she continued, "At that time, their dominion extended throughout the galaxy. Unfortunately, a plague of unknown origin began to decimate their population, but despite all their efforts, they were unable to cure it." Out of options, they decided to flee this galaxy. Seeing everyone hanging on her lips, she continued, "Before leaving, they used a large machine to reseed human life throughout the galaxy, except on one planet where they manually replanted it using their own genetic code." Here on Earth !
Considering that the essential information about the origins of the gate had been given, Cutter resumed speaking. "As you all understand, the existence of other potentially advanced peoples is beyond doubt, so your objective will be to try to make contact with them if possible « Now let's move on to the topic that gets people riled up ! The Goa'uld !»
As the holograms of Cyla Urbanus and the stasis pod disappeared, different images of the Abydos pyramid, the flying device used by Ra's soldiers, and the staff weapon appeared beside Serina with Goa'uld texts saying, "Allow me to take over, Admiral !" The entire room focused their attention on the small AI as Cutter signaled for it to continue.
"With the help of Dr. Jackson, we managed to translate numerous texts found in a secret room of the Pyramid, which we have now identified as personal memories of Ra !" While many people in the room were still processing their first encounter with an intelligent AI, they remained focused. "As we feared, the Goa'uld turn out to be a Galactic empire dominating a major part of the Milky Way." Their society is governed by a group known as System Lords. Although these vary depending on their military power, there are generally about a dozen of them, all governed by the Supreme Lord of the system ! Who happens to be Ra, before you killed him, Colonel !»
Raising his hand to ask a question, Kawalsky asked, "Aren't we risking retaliation ?"
Waving her hand to highlight the images of the weapon and the glider, she continued with a negative shake of her head. "It's unlikely !" Fortunately, none of Ra's subjects came out alive from their confrontation with the first contact team, and although the Goa'uld know of Earth's existence, our world holds no real value for them. After studying the weapons as well as the device, our initial analysis shows that Naquadah is at the heart of their technology, and as you know, there is none on Earth! With Dr. Jackson's report during his encounter with Ra, we know that the Goa'uld were certain that we do not yet master the power of the atom, the only reason that could bring them to us would be the knowledge of our technological advancement and to eliminate any potential future threat to their supremacy in the bud ! Each Goa'uld embodies their own cult image where they are the gods, and although they are all rivals, they sometimes pool their resources if it serves their superiority over other races. But with Ra's death, we hope that the newly vacant supreme lord position will lead to a civil war.
The sound from Cutter's throat brought everyone's attention back to him. "This is why you will carry out your missions in small teams of four and on foot. The Goa'uld are convinced that we are not a threat and that we are completely insignificant. This is a tactical advantage that I intend to maintain for as long as possible!" The severity in his voice made it clear to everyone that he was not joking about this matter. "Are there any questions ?"
After a little while, a hand went up. "Is there a limit to the means we can use to acquire alien technology ?"
With a nod, Cutter replied, "Of course !" You will represent Earth there, your behavior will reflect on our entire planet, you must be impeccable, before joining your teams you all underwent different psychological tests and were deemed fit ! Any reprehensible action towards a non-hostile people will be severely punished! You have all taken note of the new UNSC regulations, if on certain points we are more lenient, for example, officer relationships, disobedience to orders, mutiny, and other acts of this kind will be punished without any leniency!Your number one mission is above all to make us new friends and allies! Pausing and seeing that no one looked surprised, he continued, "As for openly hostile races, the only rule to observe will be the safety of your team and the anonymity of Earth."
"Any other questions," Seeing that no one else had any questions, Cutter turned to Hammond. "In that case, General, starting today, the SGC is back in active service, and you will begin exploration missions this afternoon !" And so the Humans of Earth took their first steps into the rest of the stars !
-End of chapter-
So, first of all, I want to say that it is difficult to remain consistent without moving too quickly, and while I don't want to make the Earth too powerful too fast, I am, in a way, obliged to do so.
As you read at the beginning of the chapter, the Forerunners disappeared much longer ago, but YES, the Covenant still exists, they will just be a bit different and more powerful because I remind you that their technology has also evolved with Naquadah.
It should also be noted that in Halo, when the Covenant attacked, the UNSC had over 800 colonies, a fleet of thousands of ships, but most importantly, the advantage that the position of Earth was unknown. Now, with the Stargate, that advantage is impossible. It should also be noted that each Grand Master possesses several hundred Ha'taks each, whereas the UNSC only has the Spirit of Fire, which is also a troop transport. In a 1v1 against a Ha'tak, it stands no chance. As we saw in Stargate with more advanced races like the People of Martin Lloyd, they still got annihilated by the Goa'uld and it was thanks to an outrageous stroke of luck that Earth was able to survive!
I hope you liked this chapter and don't hesitate to leave a little comment, it always feels good to know what those who read the stories think :)
Until next time!
