Seems that I wasn't the only one who saw That One Video and hopped into my writing lair. I started this on my phone the week That Video came out, but it ended up longer than I thought so I split it up in two. And it just so happened to be midterm week (how convenient) and I ended up missing the initial boom.
With that out of the way, I hope you like what I have to offer!
It was a Thursday afternoon. The sun was shining over the city of entertainment on its way to the other side, casting shadows that elongate as time went on. Groups of bird Pokémon can be seen on their migration.
Here, in Nimbasa city's amusement park, there weren't many visitors coming and going. But there was one standing near the Rondez-View Ferris Wheel with her facing the trees.
Rather, the girl in white was staring at a pocket mirror with a wide smile making sure she looked good for the date. Well, "outing" since they weren't officially dating.
No, they weren't dating despite the numerous calls, learning each other's hobbies, relationships, likes and dislikes, flirting, blushing and laughing together. This wasn't even their first outing, here in Nimbasa city's amusement park, or even their first ride on the ferris wheel.
I hope I can tell him today, the girl thought. She imagined the face he'd make once she confessed, and her cheeks turned red. Really, just thinking about him was enough to make her blush, and she does do that a lot.
"Yancy!"
Snapping out of her dreamy expression, she closed her mirror and looked towards that familiar voice and sure enough, it was her wonderful crush who was running to meet her.
"Nate!" Immediately, her heart rose upon seeing that familiar blue shirt and red visor. She smiled brightly and ran at him to shorten the distance.
"I hope I'm not late!" Nate said, catching his breath with his hands on his knees.
"Not at all!" Yancy fanned the air, "When I heard you were all the way in Humilau city, I thought you'd take longer!"
Nate chuckled, "There's no way I'd be late. Not when you called me first."
It's true. Since she had light work today and tomorrow was a day off, as well as encouragement from her coworker, Yancy made a move herself for the first time since their first contact.
"So," After catching his breath and slicking his hair, Nate showed his hand. "Shall we?"
She giggled and gladly took his hand. It was strong and warm, no doubt from all that running and training.
"Yes, let's."
The ferris wheel just finished its previous loop and its passengers came out two by two. As it was a Thursday and the day was coming to a close, Nate and Yancy were the only passengers to enter.
They sat down on opposite sides, always in each other's sight, making the other blush by their mere presence before the wheel started to turn.
As the cabin rose higher and the sun set lower into the horizon, Yancy bashfully looked down at her hands, trying to come up with a conversation that would lead to her confession.
"It's been a while since we've seen this view." She started. "You haven't called in over a week, and... You made me worried about how you've been."
He rubbed the back of his head, "Y-yeah, sorry. I've been especially busy since our last call. Lots of battles and discoveries." He wore a smile, but she felt something was off.
"What's wrong? Is there something on my face?" he asked nervously. Of what, she's not sure.
"I can tell there's something bothering you." he twitched. "You don't look very confident." Nate stumbled on his words, his eyes darting away. His smile wasn't curved properly, and the grip on his hand was tighter than usual.
"Tell me..." Because of that, she reaches for his hand and gently unwraps his tense fingers, rubbing the back of his hand with her thumbs.
"What's on your mind, Nate?"
He's that easy to read, huh? He didn't want to tell her anything dangerous, but hearing that tone of her voice, and the seed of worry in her eyes looking up at him, he couldn't help himself but to tell her something.
He had told her before about Team Plasma, how he'd run into them occasionally and drive them away, but there's no way he could tell her about his last encounter in the Giant Chasm earlier today.
At least, not until he's fully processed it.
"Well, you know how I travel a lot and... Face a lot of difficult challenges." Yancy nodded. "So, it's only natural to come face-to-face with situations that would... be life-threatening.
Yancy gasped, and her hands squeezed his. Her heart felt uneasy. "Did... did that happen today?" When he nodded with downcast eyes, her heart ached, and her breath was caught. She suddenly felt guilty.
Nate's face vividly recalling the reason for his anxiety...
In the very depths of the Giant Chasm, was an icy cave that very few people know about, dark and devoid of all but one Pokémon. Nate had chased the infamous leader of Team Plasma, only to be faced with the legendary Pokémon said to have fallen from the sky.
Nate tried to fight it, but the appearance of the Pokémon accentuated the cold temperature and froze the pokéballs, and having run out of options, Nate was at the mercy of the grudge-bearing Ghetsis.
"Kyurem! Impale this fool! Glaciate!"
Kyurem let out a menacing, terrifying road that shook Nate to his core as it released an ice wave freezing his shoes in place. Icicle spears as sharp as they were cold hovered around him, increasingly spinning faster before converging for the final blow.
It was only thanks to N's timely appearance and his legendary dragon that Nate was alive right now.
But it wasn't over, as he then had to deal with the newly fused Kyurem as well as Ghetsis' team of bloodlusted Pokémon.
Anyone would be traumatized after an experience like this. The atmosphere felt heavy. Nate didn't mean for it to be this way, but that close brush with death was still hot on his mind.
"Was it my..." Yancy's voice trembled, cutting Into his thoughts. "Should I not have called you?"
"N-No!" Nate nearly burst out of his seat, "No, Yancy, that's not it. You called when it was all said and done. I, I was relieved when you called me. Really."
Reluctantly, she smiled. She wanted to do more but it seemed that pressing further wouldn't do any good. "Okay, if you say so."
They took a break, a little breather while they calmed down. They were nearly at the apex of the ride, and the view of Nimbasa City and beyond was still breathtaking no matter how many times they've seen it.
While the dangerous event would stay at the back of her mind, Yancy couldn't help but smile when he said he was relieved from her call.
"Yancy...–"
The ferris wheel slows to a halt, and the cabins rock back and forth, albeit not strongly. But it was enough to give Nate and Yancy a scare, with Nate instantly standing up to scout the area in a mild panic.
"No way, could they have–?" He muttered to himself, but there wasn't any sign of attack from anyone or anything.
"Hello, can you hear me?" The cabin's intercom started to speak. "This is the Rondez-View Ferris Wheel operator speaking. We're sorry for the sudden stop. Apparently, a couple of orphan Joltiks have come together and made a nest of wires inside the main control panel and have been secretly draining our power supply."
Nate breathed out as he slumped back in his seat. The panicked rush Yancy witnessed was more worrying than the sudden stop.
"We have called a mechanic to take said Joltiks to the daycare and fix this problem as soon as possible. Until then, please don't panic, and while you're up there, I hope you enjoy the view as much as you can. Operator out."
Nate pitched the bridge between his eyes and sent a bothered breath towards the nearest glass pane, and even though the situation was deemed harmless, there was still a hint of distress in Nate's expression. "Sorry if i'm on edge today. It's not a good look."
She shook her head. "It's okay, everyone has bad days. Take your time, I'll listen when you're ready." She gave him a reassuring smile, "It's not like we're going anywhere for a while."
He smiled, this time it was more genuine. Right now, he's never been more grateful to be with someone so kind and understanding. Simply sitting down in silence feels comforting. And more than that, he's glad that person was Yancy. With a deep breath, he continued.
"Yancy... When you called me today right after everything calmed down, It felt like... uh, how do I say this?"
"Take your time," she reiterated.
"It was like, when reality hits you and you realize how important the connections you've made, or, something like that." He smiled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head. "Sorry, that doesn't make sense, does it?"
But she giggled. "Were you happy?"
"Yeah, I was happy. I guess you could say it was exactly what I needed at that moment. All that stress and uneasiness from my encounter was released when I saw your face. Well, maybe not all, but you get the idea." He chuckled. And then as he thought back to that time, the word he was looking for sprung in his head.
"I missed you, Yancy."
That's it. That's all she needs to know to reaffirm how she felt deep in her heart, that he was the one she gladly fell for. Me too, she wanted to say, but he spoke again.
"You know..." He started, looking out into the distance. "It was my first time going into Nimbasa city. It was the city of entertainment I've always heard about, so I thought I might check it out, and it was by pure chance that I found your Xtransceiver lying on the grass."
"And when you picked it up, it was the same moment I called, hoping that someone had found it." Yancy finished. "And by pure chance, that person happened to be you."
"Yeah." pulling back, he waves his hands annoyingly. "I'll be honest, Trying to get a strong signal to pick up a call was so annoying and tedious, I thought about handing it to the police to deal with it."
"Tee hee, Sorry about that..."
"But then, you kept calling. The more you called, the more you learned about me, and the more you learned about me, the more I wanted to know about you. You were always busy, so I couldn't ask questions myself. At some point, I only want to hear your voice. I didn't just want to return it, but I wanted to see you and get to know you. And by the 9th or tenth call..."
"We met." Yancy finished.
He nodded. He recalled their first meeting, how defensive she got when she was "recognized," how they ended up exchanging numbers, and how beautiful she looked. Her pink hair and blue eyes, her clear, cute voice and the way she casually talked. She certainly left a strong impression on him. It's been so long, huh?
"I didn't think luck had that big of a role out of Pokémon battles and yet, here we are. If I had given up on returning it, that would be my biggest regret. But I didn't, so I can't say that."
"It wasn't just luck."
"huh?"
"Sure, finding my Xtransceiver and giving it back was lucky, but that's about it. We still kept in touch afterwards, talking and having fun. Going out together, and riding this ferris wheel together, was definitely not just luck."
Now that he thinks about it, that is true. And the way she talked, the words she said, gave him confidence to say what he wanted to tell her for a long time now.
He looks away for a moment while his cheeks light up. gets over his embarrassment. His dumb smile as he seeps air through his teeth, trying to build his courage for something. Yancy found it very cute.
"Yancy..."
"Yes?"
He pauses. Yancy blinks, anticipating his words. The longer it went, the faster her heart beat, and her hand thoughtlessly squeezed into her chest.
"I like you," he said. "Not in the way I like my friends or my Pokémon, but, in a very special way just for you... and you alone."
Her tightened chest relaxes, Her blue eyes glimmered and softened, and her beautiful smile came natural. Just like rising up on a roller coaster and reaching the peak, but are instead met with a soft decline.
Once more, he rubs the back of his head. "Although I made it sound like I only realized it recently, the truth is that I've liked you for a long while, but I didn't know how or, when I should tell you."
Yancy's smile convinced him to go on. "You know how I'm really busy traveling the region, training for and earning gym badges, and fighting Team Plasma when they get into trouble, so I didn't know if I should tell you before or after I became champion."
"But then... you called me, Right after I escaped certain death. At first, I was going to rest somewhere, but, that friend who saved me told me to go."
N's words replayed in his head. It was when Nate was about to back out and hesitant despite the brave display in battle. 'If you have something to do, then do it. If you wait for too long, you may never get a chance again.'
"It was then that I made my decision. Because I worried that... If something were to happen to my journey and I... didn't make it, then... there's no way you know. "His face shifted, showing the pained expression for a possible future. His voice and fingers tensed up.
"You'd be waiting for me to call back, not knowing what happened to me, and you'd never learn how I felt."
"Nate..." He noticed Yancy's troubled expression and snapped out of his daze and apologized. But Yancy simply shook it off.
"It's okay. For the longest time, I couldn't say it either. I didn't know how that would affect m-my job, but more importantly, I thought that if I confessed when you were still working on your dream... then I'd be tying you down." While he wanted to say something, he couldn't fault her for thinking like that.
"It was fun just getting to talk to you, so I thought I could wait for... however long it would take."
Her hat made her eyes unseen. Nate opened his mouth–
"But!"
"These past few days when you haven't called in a long time, I was feeling... Restless." She suddenly pouted, "Hearing my coworkers talk about their love lives, I felt really envious, and all sorts of other things. But most importantly, what I really wanted was... to see you again!"
"I wanted to talk to you the way he does. I wanted you to think about me everyday and call me cute little nicknames." She poked her index fingers together. "I wanted t-to do things like... holding hands, feeding each other and even... k-k-kissing..."
With that remark, both of them ended up shy, unable to see each other as their minds raced miles. But Yancy didn't want to stop there as she startled him by pulling both of his hands bringing him to face her.
"I... I wanted to wake up by your side, and tell you how I love you every single day, Nate!"
If you have any criticism, please let me know!
