The lecture hall was almost full when Daniel walked in. Sam and Pete were in the security office watching through the CCTV, trying to see if they could identify people in the audience who were concerning, one of the missing or possibly the next victim. Assuming this was connected to their case.
He'd thankfully managed to get some proper sleep so he was a lot more focussed that he had been but the thought of who had been kidnapping people, and what their connection to him could possibly be, concerned him.
Making sure he took a seat near the back where he wouldn't be spotted, Daniel studied the audience. Most appeared to be college students with a few others who looked to be from all walks of life.
"Anything interesting?" Sam asked in his ear.
"No," he breathed, "Seems like a pretty normal crowd for an advertised lecture."
He heard her chuckle softly before she told him, "Keep your eyes open. Pete and I are monitoring but the sound is coming through your earpiece so we might miss some things."
Before he could reply, the lights dimmed, and Daniel watched a woman walk up to the podium. The woman who stepped into the light wore a dark grey jacket over a light blue dress, had long brown hair clipped back neatly, she had lightly tanned skin and looked relaxed as she looked around. Daniel guessed her to be in her late twenties to early thirties.
"Good afternoon and welcome," she said softly, her accent not unusual for Colorado and Daniel didn't hear anything else to suggest she'd travelled or was masking her real accent, "It is wonderful to see such a good crowd. Many people are fascinated by Ancient Egypt but the information we know only scratches the surface. Over ten years ago an Egyptologist made discoveries showing that what is being taught is wrong, and that the pyramids are older than they are believed to be. Despite the proof he had found, he was laughed at and made a pariah by his peers who didn't want all they believed they knew to be wrong. We at the Light Foundation have made it our mission in life to share the truth with everyone."
Daniel felt a small surge of pride at the words, it felt good to have someone not connected to the SGC to say he was right. Shaking himself, Daniel began to focus on the lecture.
As the lecturer continued, Daniel found himself mouthing the information along with her. It was something he had worked so hard on and part of him felt jealous that not one person had walked out.
What was interesting was how the lecture skirted around the Goa'uld and their influence but gave hints regarding them.
Daniel blinked in surprise when the lights came up suddenly.
"Thank you for your attention," the woman said, she still hadn't given them a name, "If you wish to learn more either about what I've just been talking about or the Light Foundation then I will be answering questions for the next hour, but if you can't stay then you can also give us an email address and we'll send you more material."
"Don't even think about asking her a question," Pete stated in Daniel's ear.
Daniel grimaced but knew the other man was right. He may have changed since he'd given the lecture, but it was possible he would be recognised.
"That was fun," the woman who had been sitting beside him said as she pulled her jacket on, "A bit ridiculous but fun."
"Ridiculous?" Daniel couldn't stop himself from asking.
She chuckled, "You know that bit about the government hiding how old the pyramids are. I mean why would they bother?"
"You're right," Daniel replied carefully, "It's a bit far-fetched."
"But it gave me something to do this afternoon while my daughter is at a birthday party," she shrugged.
Sliding out of the row, Daniel moved to allow her to leave before him. He slowly put his jacket on and followed the rest of the crowd down to the front. He could see the woman sitting talking to two people who looked like students.
"Do we have a dummy email I can use?" Daniel murmured, "I want to know what information is sent out."
"Yeah," Pete replied, "Use the name Mark Davies, and the address…"
Daniel dutifully wrote the email address Pete stated, thankfully he gave him it a second time so Daniel could ensure he'd written the right one. With that done he left, and despite knowing he shouldn't, when he passed the woman who had given the lecture, he glanced at her. She turned just as he looked over and he saw her react in surprise, so he left.
Climbing into the car, he headed back to the station to meet up with Sam and Pete.

Daniel sat studying the file of Enid Dawkins, who he was sure was the woman who had been talking at the lecture. She'd been missing for two years and Daniel felt for her family, especially her mother who the file showed had been in hospital when Enid went missing. Daniel knew it was the worst thing in the world for someone you loved to be missing. It must be even worse when it was your child.
He closed his eyes for a moment, thinking back before shaking himself. This wasn't about him; they had to find out who was doing this and find all the missing people. Hoping they weren't too traumatised to return to their families.
"Hey," Pete appeared in the small room they were using, "Email has been received with a few attachments. I have no idea what it's about but I'm assuming you might."
Taking the printout of the email, Daniel grimaced at the title – The Blessings of The Hidden One.
Getting a bad feeling he turned the page and saw a photograph of a woman with several children surrounding her. A woman he knew well.
Dropping the sheets of paper, Daniel threw himself back against the wall, finding he couldn't breathe properly. The air had become thick, and he couldn't force enough into his lungs because the woman in the photograph was the same woman whose picture sat on his bedside table, and he saw every night before he went to sleep.

Pete was relieved when they received the email. He'd been worried that Daniel had been recognised, and they would not send them any information. He nodded to the kid who had printed it out for him before he headed to the office where Daniel was reading through some new files they'd received. Sam had decided to go and get lunch for them, mostly to ensure Daniel ate something substantial. It amused Pete how she treated Daniel like he couldn't look after himself, like he was her wayward little brother.
"Hey," Pete said as he walked into the room, "Email has been received with a few attachments. I have no idea what it's about but I'm assuming you might."
Taking the printout of the email, Daniel grimaced before he turned the page. Pete stared in confusion as the other man's face drained of colour before he practically fell out of his seat and pressed his back against the wall, hyperventilating.
"Daniel?" Pete tried to get the other man to calm down, but he wasn't reacting to Pete at all.
Worried, Pete headed to find Sam hoping she could get through to her friend. He found her as she was walking back into the station with a bag of food, surprise covering her face when he ran over.
"What's wrong?" she asked confused.
"I don't know," Pete said, "But Daniel…just come on."
He ran back upstairs with Sam following him, the moment she stepped into the room she handed Pete the bag and moved to her friend's side.
"Daniel," she said gently, "I need you to look at me," touching his face, Sam turned him to face her, "Talk to me."
Still hyperventilating, Daniel whispered, "Did I…did I abandon her?"
"What?"
He shook his head, and Sam turned to Pete, "What was happening before he…"
Pete picked up the papers, "I gave him this."
Sam let out a gasp as she looked at the picture of the woman, she studied it for a few moments before turning to Daniel again.
"It's a drawing," Sam said, "Not a photo, I promise. It's not her. You didn't abandon her."
Daniel's breathing slowed and he whispered, "Are you sure?"
"Look at it closer," Sam said, "You can see that this was drawn. I promise."
Shakily, Daniel took the paper into his hands, and he studied it closely before dropping into a seat, resting his forehead on the table as he took a few breaths while Sam rubbed his back comfortingly.

"Where's Daniel?" Pete asked as he returned to the room after leaving to give them some space.
Sam sighed, "I sent him to get some fresh air. Which means he'll call General O'Neill to talk."
Pete placed the mug of coffee he'd brought for her and took the empty seat, "Can I ask why this picture meant he lost it?"
Letting out a long sigh, Sam showed him the picture that had sent Daniel into a panic attack.
"This is Sha're," she explained, pointing to the dark-haired woman, "She was Daniel's wife. Kidnapped by the Goa'uld and had one of those things put inside her. He searched for her for several years, hoping to save her but the Goa'uld inside her tried to kill him. Teal'c saved him but…"
"She died," Pete grimaced when Sam trailed off.
"It took a long time for him to come back to us from his grief," Sam explained, "This picture looks so much like a photograph, I think he only saw her and…well you know what happened."
Pete frowned, "This seems even stranger now. Daniel's work, this started just after he 'died' and I still want that story, now his deceased wife's picture is being used on the information these people are sending out. He's our connection but to what?"
Sam shook her head, "I wish I knew."
Pushing his hand through his hair, Pete said, "Okay, when he gets back then we need him to read the information sent."
Sam winced, "I don't know if…"
"Sam," Pete cut her off, "My priority is the missing people. It has to be."
She nodded, "I know.
"I'll get another one printed without the picture, and make sure there's no others in there before he goes over it," Pete told her, "But we need him to read it and tell us what it means."
"Okay," Sam grimaced, "But let me talk to him first."
"You okay?" Jack asked once Daniel finished explaining what had happened as he walked through the empty street.
Daniel sighed, "I am. Just for a moment thought it was a photograph of Sha're. Sam realising it was a drawing got through to me."
"What are you doing now?"
"Heading back to the police station," Daniel told his friend, "I'm going find out who is using my work and my wife to abduct people."
"If you need to talk, give me a call," Jack reminded him.
"I will," Daniel smiled, relieved that even now Jack was still his closest friend.
Reaching the station again, Daniel headed back to the office they were using absently flashing the pass he'd been given. He found Sam and Pete sitting, eating lunch while going through the files.
"Hey," he greeted them, "Is that lunch?"
Sam nodded, "Yes, there's also fresh coffee if you want." She paused for a moment before asking, "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine," Daniel replied, looking her in the eye hoping she understood not to push, "Where is the information we got from the email."
Pete handed him several papers, "Here. I took the pictures out."
"Thanks," Daniel breathed, "Though if you can give me them after this, I'd appreciate it. I only have one picture of her."
Pete frowned confused, "Why do you only have one picture of your wife?"
Daniel glanced at Sam who said, "I only told him the basics."
"I met Sha're when we went through the Stargate the first time on the planet Abydos," Daniel explained, "We lived on her home, I didn't have a camera and then she was taken. The one picture I have comes from the original mission."
Pete nodded and didn't say anything else.
Taking a seat, Daniel pulled out the large sandwich Sam had bought for him before beginning to read.

"The Blessings of the Hidden One," Daniel stated to Pete and Sam, "Is about Ammonet. There are multiple lines of thoughts on her, which is not important right now. The information is a mixture of myth and outright fantasy but basically it is trying to entice someone in to join what I can only call a cult. Whoever is behind this has to have been connected to the SGC at some point, enough to know about my work and that Sha're was Ammonet's host."
"Are you sure?" Pete asked.
"To have drawn those pictures with such accuracy, they had to have seen her picture at some point," Daniel told him.
Sam grimaced, "That could be a lot of people."
"I would probably eliminate anyone in the archaeology department," Daniel said before amending, "At least those whose speciality is Egyptology. There would be much more factual information in here otherwise."
"Nice to know they have standards," Pete murmured, making Sam chuckle softly.
"It also has to be someone who left around the time I died," Daniel continued, "Because the missing people started around then."
Pete held up his hand, "Okay, this is the second time you've said something about you dying. I need an explanation."
Daniel glanced at Sam who frowned at him. Giving her a hopeful look, she groaned and gave in.
"Several years ago," Sam said, "Daniel was exposed to a lethal dose of radiation."
Pete looked over at him, "You're kidding?"
"Not a joke," Daniel noted, "Trust me."
"Anyway, at that point we had met an alien being who helped him become energy," Sam continued as Pete stared at her in disbelief, "He was with them for a year before he came home."
"What she means is they kicked me out," Daniel said, "Sending me back to my body with no memory. Lots of fun."
Pete let out a long sigh, "The more I learn about you, the more I wish I didn't."
Daniel shrugged, "I actually know the feeling."
Rubbing his eyes, Pete mused, "So, how many people are we looking at?"
"Surprisingly, I don't think it will be that much," Daniel noted, "We usually have quite a stable workforce, most people tend to find working in the SGC fulfilling. If we lose someone it's usually by…" he winced, "Death."
"Going to say I'm glad we broke up," Pete said to Sam.
Ignoring him, Sam continued, "There is however the NID and Trust. It's possible someone who worked for them is doing this. Although you only have the one photograph of Sha're," she reminded him, "There are possibly multiple copies that you don't know about."
"Okay," Daniel grimaced, he took a deep breath, "Since that is likely a dead end, we do have one more lead. I know where the next meeting is."
Sam shook her head, "The answer is no."
"Sam, I know what I'm looking for," Daniel reminded her, "This is my work they're using."
"Exactly," Sam said, "Which means this could be a trap."
Pete opened his mouth to speak before shutting it, deciding not to get in the middle of the argument.
"It's not like I'm going to be alone," Daniel stated, "You and Pete will be watching my back, I'll be wired. Not to mention I can take care of myself."
"Except when it comes to Sha're," Sam shot back at him, "Remember how you reacted when you saw that picture."
"I wasn't expecting to see it," Daniel replied, "I'm aware they're using it now."
Sam folded her arms, "I'm not agreeing to this. And I still outrank you."
"I'm not military, Sam," Daniel reminded her sharply, "I may work with the Air Force, but you don't get to order me to do anything. And I am going whether you like it or not."
Anger flared in Sam's eyes, "You know I could go to Landry."
"For what?" Daniel demanded, "So I can remind him I'm not military. And before you try running to Jack, he gets the same answer."
"You followed his orders," Sam snapped.
"Only when I agreed with them," Daniel replied, "This is my work and my wife. I am not just letting it go, especially since there are other people who are missing. You can help or get out of my way, Sam because I am going."
