Chapter 4

I stood there in fearful silence as the ice cold grip of the magistrix tightened around my shoulder, I inhaled silence staring at the Magistrix before me too scared to say anything, the one thing on my mind that overpowered my fear was my concern for Jen'sel who lay on the ground motionless. "It was just a coin and I'm the one who took it you didn't have to hurt him!" I yelled, regaining my courage, smacking her hand off my shoulder before running towards Jen'sel, without any resistance from the magistrix.

"You should be thanking me, most other magisters would have you both flogged, hanged, or bisected by the local guard, sometimes a mixture of the three." She said coldly, the sound of crunching gravel slowly drawing closer.

"Maybe I'll go ahead with that and make an example out of the two of you." She said, tapping his shoulder with the tip of her shoe.

"But it wasn't him, who took it." I said, eyes watering as I held onto his hand the skin was pale and ice cold. "Oh? Admission of guilt, if you were older maybe you would be spared execution probably forced into being a concubine or used as a subject of experimentation by the viler members of my order." She said, a hint of disgust on her voice as she placed her hand back on my shoulder.

I shuddered at the touch, her hand feeling cold as ice, "Now what should I do with you two then?" she cooed, taking her hand off my shoulder and kneeling by my side touching Jen'sels' face with the back of her hand. My blood boiled, feeling anger build up in my being, I smacked her hand away and let out a low growl. Despite my best efforts at controlling my temper, I couldn't, igniting my hand in fire in a fit of rage I tried to shove her onto her back.

"Don't touch us! our dads are members of the ranger generals finest!" I shouted; she laughed in response, catching my hands before they could land their mark. I was shocked when she didn't seem the least bit phased, and even more surprised when the fire in my hand was extinguished and my hands became colder and started to lose color and feeling as if I could feel frostbite setting in.

I almost screamed out in pain, before the supernatural cold stopped in its tracks, "So, they are." She said a hint of sarcasm on her voice. "Magic is a very dangerous tool; it can be used to heal, to hurt and maim, torture, and heal the body. A tool that one should never so carelessly bring to bear against your betters." She added on, placing a hand over Jen'sels shoulder. A hue of light glowing from her hand, which caused the spell on Jen'sel to break, stirring him from his condition and come alive again as his skin regained its color before he jolted up gasping out for breath.

"Wh…What happened?" he questioned looking around in confusion until his eyes landed on the Magister kneeling before us. At first, he

started backing away, but realizing where he was he grabbed a hold of my hand and rolled me over him, putting me as far away as possible.

"Stay away from Syndra or I'll…"

"Careful with your words boy; I'm older, stronger, and in a better position to make the rest of your lives short and a living hell if I wanted to; I could simply have you both hanged, drawn, and quartered for theft of magisterial property and attempted assault of a government official and be done with the matter." She calmly interjected, making us both go silent and deathly pale as the blood drained from our faces.

Reaching into her coin pouch she pulled two gold coins and tossed them into my lap, I looked at the two gold coins with a mixture of confusion and fear. My attention went back to her as she stood up and turned away moving in the direction of Tranquillen.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked aloud, not really wanting anything out of her.

"As a favor to your father I'm teaching you a lesson on the harsh realities of our civilization, and I'm not nearly cruel enough to test you for magical potential and leave you unrewarded." She replied turning her head to face me once again, "Think of this as a glimpse of what it's like to be a magister in service of his royal majesty and the convocation of quel'thalas, I'll be seeing you again… Syndra." She said, disappearing in a flash of light.

Both me and Jen'sel were petrified, unable to move for the next several moments, a mixture of fear, shock, and confusion preventing either of us from saying anything.

Eventually, however, the fear made way to calm, and I was the first to stand grabbing the two coins she threw at me and placed them inside my pockets looking towards Jen'sel I placed my hand out to him hoping he wouldn't hate me for the trouble I'd gotten us into. Staring listlessly into space he just sat there before he noticed my hand and grabbed it, pulling himself up off the ground.

3 weeks later Syndras' home.

I was seated at the table staring at my father as he read ate his food a mixture of meat and starch his full attention focused on me as another letter sat on the table between us. A look of exhaustion on his face I could tell he had become even more stressed since I messed with the new magister in town. Apparently, there was a single bystander who witnessed the whole affair and decided to share what they saw with all their friends. After that it was only a matter of time before word spread, but the fact that it had only taken a few hours before the entire town had heard about what me and Jen'sel did and began gossiping about the whole affair was mind boggling. Consequently, it didn't take long for him to hear about it to say he was more than a little displeased was an understatement.

Upon his arrival home he was immediately confronted by Magister Kaenas who had come directly to our home yelling about how stupid and reckless my actions were. After that I had no other choice, but to completely come clean and tell them what had happened from my point of view and how even though it was my fault I never thought it would get so out of hand. My father and Magister Kaenas didn't like the "excuse" I gave, but dad left straight for the magisters spire with Kaenas to confront the magistrix. When he returned, he wasn't even screaming anymore, he merely picked me up off my feet and held onto me rubbing my head as he sang an ancient nursery rhyme from a time long lost.
