A new side
"Mr Whistler, I'm afraid I must arrest you." It was a strange thing to say after Melina died a second time, but Emmy knew that Inspector Grosky was only doing his job.
Mr Whistler stood up and as he saw the remains of the Detragan, he ran towards the magical instrument which despite being wracked by a giant machine, still functioned. "Please," he said to Grosky, "let me play, one last song."
And Grosky simply moved away, giving Mr Whistler the permission he needed.
The musician started to play, and Janice joined him in song. It was a beautiful display especially when the sun came up and glimmering sparks fell onto the island. As the music filled the atmosphere, Emmy had finally time to contemplate the latest events.
What a night! When she had found out, the professor and Luke and the Crown Petrone had gone missing to sea, she had taken a plane and flown to the ocean. Just by chance she found Inspector Grosky, wearing nothing more than his underwear and using his jacket as a signalling flag.
"Thank goodness, Emmy, you're here!" he called when she had landed in the vicinity. "I thought I was going to be shark food." The inspector filled her in on what had happened on the ship and also that a different subway was headed for sea.
"Hang on," she called as she abruptly changed directions, but apparently too abruptly as she found out when they landed on an unknown island with a dark castle that could only be Descole's.
"What's wrong, inspector?" she wondered when he stayed on the plane. "Don't you want to get out?"
"Please turn around, Emmy," he said red-faced.
"What is it?" she grinned. "I've already seen your naked chest." And it didn't look bad either.
"I, um, lost my underwear at sea." He looked so uncomfortable that Emmy laughed, but she was kind enough to turn around. When he stood next to her in his pants and jacket, she couldn't help looking down there.
He cleared his throat. "Let's just rescue everyone."
They headed towards the castle and searched the many corridors until they found Luke and Janice. They were chased by some of Descole's gangsters. Emmy was just in time to catch Luke who was for some reason sailing through the air.
"I am Grosky of the yard," the inspector came sailing down a pole, showing his police badge, "and you are all under arrest."
Emmy had never realised what a wonderful badass the inspector could be. Together they started fighting the bad guys and it was encouraging to feel what a great team they were. The inspector was one of the only people who were able to keep up with her physically, and he had never seemed to mind her rough manners.
When they had met for the first time, he had arrested her for allegedly stealing some boy's trainers. Luckily, Professor Layton had come and saved her.
"I am very sorry, miss," Inspector Grosky had apologised after the whole debacle and had offered her a training programme with the police as compensation. From then on they met regularly and had become some kind of friends.
But there was something else Emmy had learned about the inspector during the whole Ambrosia adventure, something she had never seen in him before, and which made her heart melt a little.
During their plane flight, she had told him about little missing Nina. After their fight, the professor came running down the corridor with a little girl by his side.
"Nina!" Emmy cried joyfully and crouched in front of the girl. "You're mummy and daddy sent me."
"Can I go home now?" she asked happily, and Emmy nodded.
When they had decided to rescue Emilia from Descole and wanted to run to the main chamber, Inspector Grosky took Nina into his arms and ran with her.
The little girl had her arms around him but didn't seem scared. Later in the chamber, the girl held his hand, and it was heartwarming to see how friendly the inspector interacted with her.
Now Nina sat next to Emmy on a large stone, her head against the older woman, half asleep after this crazy night. But when the sun came up, she awoke and together they enjoyed the beautiful sight before them.
When Mr Whistler stopped playing and Janice stopped singing, there was a moment of quietness that felt magical.
"Well, I think I should go and save us all," Emmy finally said.
"What do you mean?" asked the professor.
"There's only one more seat in my plane so unless I get us a bigger plane or a ship, we're stuck here." She crouched to the girl beside her. "Nina, will you be alright?"
"Do you have to go?"
"Yes, or we will be stuck on this island forever. I'm going to be quick. And the inspector's taking care of you. Won't you, Grosky?"
"Of course," he smiled and offered his hand which the little girl took instantly.
"Alright, everyone, see you in a bit," Emmy said and wanted to move to her plane when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
"Be careful, Emmy," Grosky said and looked at her in a way she had never seen before.
"In case you have to stay here on this island forever?" she asked with her usual banter.
"Well, that too."
"Don't worry, Grosky, I know what to do."
But all the way to the mainland where she had nothing more to do than steering and looking at the blue sky and dark blue ocean, she couldn't forget the way he had looked at her. It made her stomach tingle.
The police were more than relieved to hear of her good news and chartered a bigger plane at once. Emmy helped the pilot navigate to the unmapped island of Ambrosia and they landed on a larger part of the beach.
The others had already seen where they landed and came towards them. All on board, the plane flew the adventurers back to the mainland while some of the police officers stayed to investigate.
Emmy said down between Grosky and Nina. The girl didn't look very well.
"Are you okay?" Emmy asked.
"I'm a bit nervous. This is the first time I'm flying."
"Don't worry, it'll be alright. Yes, when the plane starts it's a strange feeling, but when you are up in the air, you can see so much and especially the ocean in the sun looks amazing."
Nina nodded and looked towards the window.
Emmy looked at Grosky for help who gave her an encouraging smile.
When the plane's motor started, Nina grabbed Emmy's hand.
"Have I told you the story of how I escaped a bunch of sharks?" Grosky started and his story distracted the girl so much that she was surprised when they were up in the air already.
"Look, how beautiful the water sparkles," Emmy said and from that moment on Nina was happy.
Emmy smiled at Grosky – he truly was a wonderful man.
The flight went on and when Emmy felt sleepy, she laid her head against the inspector's shoulder.
He didn't say anything, so she assumed it was alright.
When they landed, the inspector assisted in bringing back Nina to her parents who were overjoyed.
"Oh, thank you so much!" the mother cried and Emmy and Grosky just stood there, happy about the scene, saying that they only did their job.
"Another win for the yard," Inspector Grosky said when they went back to his police car.
Emmy laughed. And then just because she wanted to and it felt right, she took his hand.
He looked at her astonished, but she just smiled at him.
For a moment, they walked on, until he cleared his throat. "Emmy, would you like to have dinner with me?"
"That would be wonderful."
THE END.
