Many of the survivors packed themselves into and on any vehicle being used in the evacuation of the base. Soldiers everywhere hastily assisted those in need. This is what took longer than normal. It was no easy task to evacuate the infirmed. Had humans been as uncaring as the Terminator they were desperate to escape, the evacuation would have been complete already and many would have been left behind.
The only thing that concerned Kate, Ryka, and Quin in the mayhem was making sure the babies were safe. Because they could be classified as important military personnel, near the top actually, a soldier was easily able to guide them to an APC. At a time like this, Janelle and Todd were considered too important for the future of the human race, who else was going to carry on its torch?
Being outside for the first time since his return to this reality, Quin was receiving an 'UPDATE' on his HUD. Being a Terminator, only he received it among the Resistance. 'SKYNET, NEW LOCATION' followed by a set of coordinates flashing on Quin's HUD. 'Oh-no,' he thought. 'I gave John the wrong location'
Kate sat, taking both kids from Ryka and Quin. As she was safe with the babies inside an APC, Quin, and Ryka immediately turned to head back out and help others get loaded into other vehicles.
Quin grabbed a man in a wheelchair to help lift him onto a truck. No one noticed that it was relatively quick and easy with his enhanced strength. He quickly went off to find anyone else in need of help being loaded up.
Ryka had gone off toward the entrance to begin helping others on stretchers. She managed to load one person before Quin ran over to help. With someone having the strength of a machine, the evacuation process went a little easier.
"C'mon," Quin said pulling Ryka along. "Let's get back to Kate!"
Once inside the APC with Kate, Quin helped Ryka find a seat and helped buckle her in before beginning to walk back out.
"Hey," Ryka called to Quin. "Where do you think you're going? Sit down."
Quin looked back at Ryka. "I have to go back," he said. "I have to try and stop that Terminator and then get on the radio to talk to John.
Ryka immediately began to undo her buckle and said. "Well, if you're staying, I am too."
Quin stuck his hand out. "Be smart," he said. "We don't have time to argue and it's much safer here."
Ryka grabbed a plasma rifle off the wall and moved toward Quin. "Safe," she said. "I didn't join the Resistance to be safe."
Kate chimed in. "We're not gonna be safe for long if we don't get moving."
Quin sighed in frustration and stepped out with Ryka before closing the APC's doors. He and Ryka watched the APC tear-off, as they then entered the base.
The Terminator searched room by room. This systematic method is what gave the Resistance the time it needed to get out of dodge It came to a room that appeared to be empty, someone's office. All it saw was a desk with some paperwork on it, chairs, potted plants, and a few pictures on the wall.
As soon as the Terminator turned to move on, a Resistance soldier popped up from behind the desk. The soldier immediately aimed and fired, but the machine was much faster, having reflexes that let it target and shoot first. Both plasma bolts went off at nearly the same time, with the Terminator finding its mark.
In the command center, not far, Quin pulled Ryka into cover behind the main planning table. "It's probably close," he said. "You…wait here."
The only way in was through a heavy metal door.
Ryka tried to stand. "Like hell," she said, before being pulled back down.
"Gimme a break, will you," Quin begged. "I'm going to draw it in." he lied. "I'll come running in first, then as soon as it steps through that door, you blast it."
Ryka hesitantly nodded. "Ok," she said. "You better come back though. I'm not playing."
Quin smiled and kissed Ryka on the forehead. "I'll be right back." He said, then getting up to leave. As he stepped through, he looked back to give Ryka a reassuring smile. After closing the door, he turned around to find himself face-to-face with the Terminator. He counted on the fact that he was now part Terminator to be of use, now he would find out. His HUD indicated that he was looking at a Terminator, he could only hope the reverse was true.
The Terminator studied Quin for a moment. "You seem to be a new model," it said. "Tell me, what is your function?"
Quin's mechanical brain went into overdrive as he tried to make something up. He swallowed hard and said. "Observation," he answered. "I was sent here by Skynet to infiltrate and study these people. You're interfering with my mission. I need you to leave."
The Terminator thought for a moment. "Negative," it replied. "My mission parameters are set. I cannot abandon it. You and your mission are not in my database."
Quin took a small step forward to look confident. "That's because my mission and I are top secret," he said. "You have to leave, right now."
"Negative," the Terminator responded. "I cannot abandon my mission. Please, step aside."
Quin reluctantly moved out of the way. He knew how fast the machine was, and couldn't let Ryka face that.
Once the Terminator was close enough, just about to open the door, Quin suddenly grabbed the rifle and made for his best tackle. The cyborg was surprised but reacted very fast, holding onto its weapon as it staggered to the side. Its size was the only thing that allowed it to stay on its feet, obviously bigger, it pushed back right away.
Quin flew like a ragdoll, though he was able to maintain his grip on the weapon.
The Terminator lifted Quin with his rifle. "There a problem in your logical process," it said. "I recommend you return to Skynet for evaluation."
Quin was smaller and not as strong, but strong enough. His feet hung in the air. Somehow, he was able to plant his feet against the wall and with some effort, pushed back with enough force to throw the Terminator against the opposite wall.
Undaunted, the machine put up an immediate struggle with the rifle. It pushed Quin through a door into an office, crashing into a desk and against a file cabinet.
Having the sturdiness of a Terminator, Quin didn't feel much. Still wrestling for the rifle, at least his feet found the ground. Quin used one hand to hold onto the rifle, and the other to throw a rapid combo of a one-two punch to the machine's stomach and head. Either through forgetfulness or inexperience, he was a little surprised to see the machine unfazed.
The Terminator took the opportunity of Quin having only one hand on the rifle to perform a hard overhead slam to the ground on him.
Quin only lost his grip on the gun when the Terminator pulled away hard. He could only then look on as the machine stepped back then aimed the rifle at him.
Unexpectedly, the Terminator's chest suddenly blew apart.
Quin then saw Ryka standing a few feet away with her plasma rifle. It was one of the few times he was glad she didn't listen and stay in position.
Ryka looked around the room, noting the damage. "Goodness," she said amazed. "What happened to draw it in?"
Quin stood and shrugged. "I dunno," he said. "I got caught."
Ryka looked at Quin suspiciously. "Are you ok," she asked. "Aren't you hurt?"
Faking an injury, Quin reached behind himself and groaned, "My back has seen better days."
Together, Quin and Ryka stepped outside on the way to join the survivors.
"You know," Ryka began. "I couldn't hear much with the door closed, but I swear I could hear people talking."
Quin chuckled. "Probably just your imagination, babe." He said, then losing consciousness at the sound of a gunshot.
The gunshot had come from acting sniper, Kate, who rushed over to find Ryka staring at Quin in disbelief. "Oh God," Kate said. "How long did you know?"
Ryka shook her head and answered. "I didn't. This is impossible."
Kate kneeled to observe Quin. "Well," she said. "He's alive. Let me call everyone back. We can retake the base, chain him up, and wait for him to come around."
Ryka closed her eyes, a single tear falling as she said. "This is impossible."
Kate pulled out a radio and scalpel. "I hate to do this, but I can think of no other way to be sure." She said, begging to slice away at Quin.
About an hour later Quin began to wake. He looked around to find himself in a familiar empty room back inside the base. Kate and Ryka stood in front of him as he realized he was hanging by chains. "Hey, ladies," he said, then chuckling. "How's it…hanging?"
Kate and Ryka were not amused. They appeared almost as mannequins as they observed Quin. Ryka appeared to have been crying.
"What's wrong," Quin asked. "What's going on?"
"I shot you," Kate replied. "Bullet struck your lower left flank. You lost consciousness for some reason."
Quin struggled to see his wound. "It's a new vest," he began. "It just looks…"
Kate held up a small piece of mirror. "Don't even try." She said.
Quin could then see himself, and see that an eyepatch-shaped section around his left eye had been cut off, exposing the endoskeleton beneath. He then howled, not in pain but in shock at the sight of his Terminator's eye. "Oh God, my eye!"
"How long?" Kate asked. "Tell me or I'll happily carve more pieces of you off."
"How long, what?" Quin said.
Kate grabbed Quin's neck. "You obviously abducted Quin so you could infiltrate us," she said. "Is he even still alive?"
Quin struggled to free himself. "It's me," he pleaded. "I'm Quin. Ryka, we practically grew up together. You must believe me. I don't know what to say besides we spent a lot of time together watching a fire inside a TV."
Ryka sobbed. "Just stop," she said. "You've been here at least a couple of months. Where's my husband?"
Quin struggled a little more. "Ryka, I swear it's me. I merged with this thing somehow when…"
Kate let go of Quin and turned to Ryka. "We have to take him apart and hack his chip."
Quin struggled more than ever. "Nooo," he cried. "Don't take me apart. Please. I know, I heard you two talking earlier. Ryka, that Terminator you're hacking is from another reality. Legion is the name of its Skynet. RDE stands for reality displacement equipment. Legion figured out how to make changes to the TDE and is using it to invade other realities. Speaking of Skynet, it's relocating. I have to tell John it's in a new location."
Kate folded he arms, disbelieving every word
Ryka paced a bit. "Sounds like a bunch of BS," she said. "How can we believe anything you say? You could be making all this up to save your own hide."
Kate leaned in close. "I still say take him apart."
"Oh come on!" Quin said. "You believe in time travel, but you can't believe this? Hold up. John. Get him on the radio. He can verify everything and tell you I'm telling the truth. Kate, you remember. When we got back, a few months ago. He held a gun to my head and you said I'm his best friend. That's where we came from. A different reality. He knows, ask him. Please."
Kate stood upright. "Ok," she said. "I'll call him personally. You better hope your story checks out or I'll supervise your disassembly myself. Now, where's Skynet?"
