"Wow, Amy," Cream beams, "It sounds like you've planned exactly what you're going to do this Christmas!"
"Of course!" The pink hedgehog exclaims. "This year will be my first kiss with Sonic. Once I have him under the mistletoe, he'll just have to kiss me!" She excitedly announces. "And this is how I'm going to do it," she adds as she rushes across her room to a draw. She pulls out an envelope with a drawn heart on the front and a letter neatly tucked inside.
"Woah, what is it, Amy?" Cream asks, her eyes wide with second-hand excitement. As Amy's best friend, she has always been happy for the pink hedgehog and always supported her schemes to try and get Sonic to confess his feelings. Even if she was too young to understand romance.
Amy giggles, wiggling the envelope in front of Cream as she sits beside her on Amy's bed.
"It's a letter asking Sonic to meet me on Christmas Eve," Amy explains with a smile. "This year, I hung mistletoe onto a tree in the park, and Sonic will meet me under it." She explains, her smile getting wider at the thought. "Then, on Christmas at Rouge's party, we can tell everyone we're now a couple!" She giggles like a schoolgirl.
"Woah, so you are going to have your first kiss this year! How romantic." Cream exclaims in excitement for her friend. Everyone knew how long Amy had been waiting to receive her first kiss from Sonic.
"I know," Amy says softly, smiling, her thoughts running the scenario over in her head. Suddenly, her gaze takes in the clock on the wall, and she almost jumps up. "Oh no, we're going to be late!"
The two friends jump up hurriedly and start running around the room, collecting shoes, coats, and gloves. They had completely lost track of the time as Amy had been explaining her Christmas plans to the small rabbit. They scurried to put their boots on, and once they were ready, Amy held the hand of Cream as she led her downstairs and straight out of her front door.
The scenery outside was like a picture in every winter wonderland book. Snow covered the paths, and small, serene snowflakes fell from the sky. Amy continued to hold the hand of her small rabbit friend as they started walking down the street in the cold winter air.
The journey was not long, but the weather seemed to be getting worse and colder by the minute, which made the walk feel much longer than it was. The small rabbit was beginning to shiver from the cold, and many snowflakes had fallen onto her face and fur.
"Mama," Cream called when she saw Vanilla standing on their porch.
'Thank goodness we're here' Amy thought to herself, feeling colder by the second.
"Sorry we're late, vanilla," Amy called as she approached the porch where Vanilla was hugging her young daughter.
"Not to worry, I'm just happy you both made it here okay." Vanilla beams with a smile. "Speaking of, perhaps you should come inside dear, before the snow gets worse?"
Amy smiles brightly and shakes her head.
"Oh, thank you, but don't worry, I don't live so far away!" She exclaims. "I better hurry home," Amy lifts her hand to wave to both Cream and Vanilla.
Amy keeps a smile on her face as she turns away and hurriedly rushes back to the pathway. 'I better hurry home before the snow does get worse,' She thinks to herself as she quickens her pace.
As Amy rushes down the path, she begins shivering, and the snow starts falling heavily. 'Uh, maybe I should have stayed at Cream's,' she thinks to herself, beginning to rub her hands together for warmth. 'No, Amy, you can do this. It's not far!' She encouragingly thinks to herself.
However, not even halfway into her journey back, she is shaking from the cold, and she can barely see ahead of her due to the heavy falling snow. Amy's eyelashes kept getting cluttered with snow, making it harder for her to see where she was going. 'I need to hurry.' She thinks as she increases her speed.
Unfortunately, due to her increased speed and lack of awareness, Amy steps on an ice patch and falls straight into a pile of snow. If she wasn't cold enough before, the snow leaked into her coat, and her hands felt too cold to move. She mustered up as much strength as she could and tried to push the snow out of her face enough so she could try standing back to her feet.
As she reaches her feet, Amy goes to take another step and unluckily slips again.
This time, though, she doesn't hit the ground. She feels arms grab her and keep her steady. At first, she thought that it could only be Sonic, someone with speedy enough reflexes to stop her from falling again. But then her eyes meet the gaze of red rubies staring at her.
Her eyes widen in shock, and a light blush covers her cheeks.
"S-Shadow?" She stammers, unsure whether it's because she's cold or that shocked to see the ebony hedgehog before her again. It had been a few years since Shadow had left on his own.
He helps steady her to her feet but notices that she is covered in snow and appears to be shaking slightly.
"And why exactly are you out in a snowstorm?" He grumbles.
"Oh, I was uh- well, I had to bring Cream home," Amy explains.
"Hmph. You're going to catch a cold before Christmas." He mutters in a somewhat annoyed tone.
Before Amy could reply, Shadow pulled his red scarf from around his neck and gently placed it around Amy's neck in hopes it would help warm her up even slightly.
"I'll get you home." He mutters, already lowering his hands to under her legs so he can easily lift her into his arms.
Although Shadow had lifted Amy like this many times before, his actions were making the pink hedgehog blush. 'It must be because he's been gone for so long,' She reassures herself. 'Besides, I never thought I would see Shadow again after he left.'
Without saying another word, Shadow held onto Amy tightly and sped off in the direction that Amy was headed. Due to his speed, it takes a matter of seconds before Shadow is holding Amy outside her house.
He places her on her feet outside her door and, without a word, turns back to the snowscape, almost as if he is about to run away and never return.
Amy hated the thought.
"W-Wait!" She lunges after Shadow despite being almost frozen. "It's getting worse, you should come in." She insists.
Shadow turns to look at her with his bright ruby eyes and frowns.
"Maybe next time, Rose."
Hearing Shadow calls her Rose after all this time made her blush, and she knew that she couldn't just let him disappear again. She grabbed his arm to stop him from leaving. Her cold touch made him shudder slightly.
"Come in S-Shadow, wait for the snow to pass." She says, insisting.
Shadow smirks, "No need to beg, Rose." He mutters. "I'll stay if that's really what you want." He adds, taking a step towards her.
Amy's eyes widen and she quickly moves her gaze away from the ebony hedgehog. She fumbles to open her door and she enters, holding it open for Shadow to follow. As he walks past her, he eyes both her and her home. She notices he has snow on his quills at the back, almost covering the tips. 'He must be cold too, especially after giving me his scarf.' She thinks to herself.
She closes her door and rushes over to her fireplace which she quickly lights. Without really thinking she grabs Shadow's hands and leads him over to the fire, pushing his hands out in front of the fire.
Shadow furrows his brows and watches Amy's hands intently as if remembering a memory. Amy notices and gently pulls her hands away not wanting to trigger any negative memories of his. But as she does, Shadow quickly grabs her hands and his eyes meet her gaze.
"You need to warm up too." He mutters before looking to the fire.
The two lower themselves to the ground in front of the fire and for what feels like hours but is merely minutes, Shadow holds Amy's hands as they both warm up from the fire. Amy would open her mouth to say something and then close it because she was too embarrassed to say out loud that they were holding hands.
"I think…Maria used to warm my hands like this." He mumbled, almost lost in his thoughts. It had been some time since any of them spoke and Amy was much warmer now than she had been before.
"I bet you miss her." Amy gently speaks, empathizing with the ebony hedgehog.
His gaze snaps to Amy quickly, almost as if he didn't expect a response.
"Every day."
As their gaze meets, Amy's cheeks flush with a bright red blush. She had always been the only one to see this vulnerable side of Shadow. She always wondered why he felt safe enough to open up to her, even now after all these years.
"Shadow," Amy speaks softly, "Where have you been all this time?" She asks not letting go of his hands.
"Hmph," He grunts. "Doesn't sound like it's your business." He retorts.
Amy frowns at the hedgehog. Shadow had always been hot and cold towards people, it was almost as if he'd open up and then try to push people away immediately after.
"Fine. Don't tell me." Amy responded sassily, snatching her hands from his. "It's not like it matters anyway." She adds.
After all, the only things she should be worrying about are Sonic, her plan, and her friends. Shadow had made it clear he didn't see any of them as friends as he never said goodbye to anyone before leaving. Even Rouge said she didn't know where he had gone.
"It's not like you even came to say goodbye to everyone before disappearing across the world. You know friends are always supposed to say goodbye to one another." She crossed her arms across her chest.
"I didn't realize a goodbye to everyone was necessary." He responds lowly.
Amy glances over and examines Shadow as he is watching the flames of the fireplace. Then she lets out a soft sign and begins slowly taking his red scarf from around her neck.
"Well… if you can't tell me where you've been, maybe you can at least tell me why you are back?" She asks, lacing her fingers gently through the fabric of his scarf, which rests on her lap.
"Rouge contacted me," He mumbled. "She's been begging me to come back for Christmas over the years…" He trailed off towards the end. "I had a memory of you. You said Christmas time was your favorite time of the year."
Hearing Shadow's words caught Amy by surprise. She had most definitely said that more likely a few years ago when she had much more hope that Sonic would use her favorite holiday to confess, but the years went by and he never did. 'But this year, this year will be different.' She thought to herself.
"I had always hoped that I would get my first kiss at Christmas time. There was something so romantic about being kissed under the mistletoe with the snow all around." She explains softly, her voice so soft it was almost a whisper.
"Mistletoe?" Shadow asks confused. He had never heard of the expression before and he never really celebrated Christmas time, after all to him he had no family to celebrate with.
"Oh yeah, it's like this plant that you hang up. It's kind of a Christmas tradition." Amy beams with a slight smile.
"Christmas makes people kiss under plants?" Shadow mutters unimpressed with the idea. "Sounds ridiculous." He adds.
"I mean- not if you have someone you want to be under the mistletoe with. It's very romantic with the right person." Amy defends.
"And who would the right person be?" Shadow asks out of curiosity.
"Well Sonic, of course," Amy responds quickly. "It's got to be with someone very special to you. Someone who you love."
Shadow had never known love in the same way that Amy had always described. The only love he had known was for Maria and that was strictly platonic love as he considered Maria to be his family. Throughout his years he doesn't believe he had ever been loved, after all, who could love a dangerous monster such as him?
Amy notices Shadow's demeanor change, almost sad-like. "But uh- that's not the only great thing about Christmas time. I mean there's also the gift-giving, the baking, and spending time with your friends." She quickly begins to ramble. "Love at Christmas is just a bonus."
"I can't imagine any of that being fun," Shadow mutters. "I prefer being alone." He adds.
"You won't know if you like something until you give it a try," Amy beams with a smile. "You should stay for Christmas. Rouge has been asking you to come to her party so maybe you should. I think everyone will be happy to see you."
"Hmph," Shadow grunts. "I can think of a certain blue faker who may not."
"But things are different now, we're all on the same side and Earth has been safe. Just like Maria wanted." Amy reminded Shadow.
He peered over at Amy at her mention of Maria. He couldn't understand why Amy reminded him so much of her. Perhaps it was her soft-spoken voice, her similar bubbly behavior, or her kind nature. Whatever it was, he couldn't help but admit he had always been drawn to Amy Rose for this reason. She somehow saw the same good in him that Maria did, despite everyone else only seeing the bad.
"Thank you, Rose." Shadow says as he pushes himself up to his feet.
"The snow should have settled and I must go now you are safe."
Without hesitating Shadow was already walking to Amy's front door. Amy rushed up so quickly that she almost tripped over her own feet.
"Wait!" She called out, rushing quickly after him before he could reach the door. She lifts Shadow's scarf up and gently wraps it around his neck. "I wouldn't want you to catch a cold." She smiles brightly.
Shadow was taken off-guard at Amy's actions and he blushed as he touched his scarf. She had always been caring, but her caring about him made him feel warm inside. It was a feeling he was not used to. He nods and opens her door before stepping out into the snow. Amy steps after him but doesn't go outside.
"Shadow?"
He looks back at the pink hedgehog.
"Will you stay for Christmas?" She asks, wondering if perhaps he might disappear into the snowy night and she wouldn't see him again.
"I won't leave again without a goodbye." He responds watching her closely. "Like you said, it's what friends should do."
Amy smiles happily at the ebony hedgehog and nods. He faintly smiles back before disappearing in front of her eyes.
