Annabeth's POV
"No, seriously. I can't believe you said that to her face!" I exclaimed, shaking my head in disbelief.
"What? I was just telling her the truth," Piper replied nonchalantly.
Earlier that day, before third period, Piper and I were walking to our lockers to grab our stuff for math. On our way to the classroom, we unfortunately ran into my biggest enemy: Drew Tanaka.
Flashback
"Hey, Annie," she said, flashing her usual plastic grin. "Now I finally know why no guy will ever go near you—your style. Or should I say, lack thereof?" Drew smirked, her smugness making my blood boil.
I looked down at my outfit: ripped skinny jeans and my favorite gray hoodie. Nothing flashy, but hardly offensive.
"Believe it or not, Drew, school isn't a fashion show, and the halls are not your runway," I shot back, matching her glare.
Before Drew could respond, Piper turned to face her, arms crossed. "Wow. You really don't have a life, do you?" she asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I mean, what is this? You don't have anyone to screw right now, so you're wasting your time throwing meaningless, stupid insults at us?"
Piper turned to me, ignoring Drew entirely. "Honestly? This is just sad," she added, her voice heavy with fake sympathy.
For once, Drew was speechless. Her face shifted from shock to pure fury, her mouth opening and closing like she was searching for words.
Piper tilted her head mockingly. "Any more insults, Drew?" She used air quotations for emphasis. Drew stayed silent.
"That's what I thought," Piper finished coolly, grabbing my hand and pushing past Drew and her two minions like they were nothing.
End of Flashback
"Still, that was pretty awesome," I said, unable to stop myself from grinning.
Piper shrugged dramatically. "Aw, it was nothing. Just sticking up for my best friend. But if you insist, yes, I was pretty awesome."
We both burst out laughing, the tension from earlier completely forgotten.
I had been walking with my head down, lost in the moment, so I didn't see what—or who—was directly in front of me.
Suddenly, someone collided into me, and the next thing I knew, I was flat on my back, staring at the ceiling. Someone heavy was sprawled on top of me.
