I don't own Pokémon!
Notes: So this was a little random short story I feel like I needed to write. It's loosely based on a real event that happened to me years ago but I recently remembered it and decided it'd be a cute idea for a little one shot. This is my first contestshipping story and this is technically my second story in the fandom, I'm still going to struggle a bit with keeping characters in character. But anyway let me know if you enjoyed this. Also there will be grammatical errors and possibly some spelling errors, I apologize for that, I will go back and edit again soon.
[This is completely AU so there's no mention of Pokémon in this story.]

Green eyes met sapphire ones as the two of them stood in stunned silence. The brunette's hands immediately went up to her mouth and the man just blinked, then he blinked again. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion as his mind tried to process what he heard…if he heard correctly. The woman let out a breath, trying to play off what had come out of her mouth just moments ago. Her mind raced as she tried to come up with an excuse or maybe he didn't catch what she had said and she could come up with something else to say instead.
"I'm sorry...what did you say?" he asked in bewilderment.
"I said I love juice!" May laughed pointing to the fridge of juices at the convenience store, before opening it and grabbing a pineapple mango drink and a guava one for Drew who muttered a thanks, before she added, "what did you think I said?"
"I umm…I wasn't sure I heard what you said." he lied. He wasn't going to bring it up since he wasn't a hundred percent sure she had said that or he had imagined it and it didn't feel right to tease her about it now.
'Oh thank goodness he didn't catch that. I'd have to fake my death and move to start over out of the embarrassment that would have caused me.'
The two walked towards the register and paid for their drinks and walked back into the summer heat. The two walked in silence, taking sips of the cool beverage before May asked, "So where do you want to go?"
Drew shrugged, "Not sure, there's nothing I really need to do. Do you have somewhere you need to go? Errands to run?"
"None that I can think of."
"Do you want to keep walking? Or did you want to go home instead?"
Not wanting to go home just yet and wanting to spend more time with Drew answered, "Let's just keep walking. I'm sure I forgot I have to do something and maybe walking will help me remember."
Drew gave her a smile. "Sure, let's go."
They walked through the neighborhood, sometimes making random chit-chat about random topics, sometimes just taking in the scenery in a comfortable silence. It had been a while since the two of them could just hang out like this, especially with the end of semester papers and tests and university and May also working at the veterinary clinic part time. It was getting hard to squeeze in the time to hang out but they always did manage to in the end. May didn't know when the feelings for her friend turned from platonic to romantic but she tried to not say anything, being absolutely sure that Drew didn't feel the same way. They were friends, best friends actually, best not complicate their friendship. She was going to have to do a better job at hiding her feelings.
"The sun's starting to set soon and I don't know about you but I'm hungry." he asked her.
"I'm starving."
Drew raised his eyebrow. "The diner that's down by the pier?"
"Of course! You know they have the best sandwiches!"

They had spent longer at the diner than originally intended, actually having an actual long conversation where they actually were able to catch up with what was going on in their lives. The sun had completely set by the time they started to head back towards May's apartment.
"I still can't believe you're a veterinary tech."
May tilted her head, "why's that?"
"If I remember correctly, you were terrified of animals, specifically cats."
"In my defense, I was 5. And the cat snuggled up to my leg baiting me to pet his head only for him to scratch me after I did. They're confusing animals. But having Dawn as a roomate helped with that fear, her cat is an adorable chunky fluffball of love."
"That is very true. Dawn's cat is very calm and adorable." he agreed.
Walking for a few more minutes they both stopped in front of her apartment building. He turned to her and reached his hand out, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. May felt her heart beat faster and sucked in a breath as the feeling for his fingers brushing her ear set goosebumps and tingles erupting on her skin. She was so lost in her head that she hadn't noticed his hand was back by his side and he looked at her worriedly. "You okay? You spaced out for a sec." he asked with a hint of worry laced in his tone.
"Yes." she breathed out.
"Well I have to get going and you should go relax since you have work early tomorrow."
The brunette nodded in agreement not wanting to say goodbye but she knew the night had to come to an end.
"I'll call you later this week."
"You better." May warned playfully. "See you later." Pulling her keycard out of her pocket she walked to the front step before Drew's voice called out to her.
"Hey May."
She turned around, "Yeah Drew?"
"For what it's worth, I love you too."
"I'm sorry…what…do you mean… say what?" she stammered
"I heard what you said at the convenience store. I didn't want to make you uncomfortable then. I wanted to process everything, so I didn't bring it up again."
"Are you messing with me?"
Drew frowned, "Why would I do that?"
"I…" she didn't have a good answer so she stopped.
"Did someone ever do that to you?"
May shook her head no.
"Good, for a second I thought I had to go punch someone's face in."
May laughed.
"I know we tease each other all the time but I would never mess with your emotions as a joke." he walked until he was in front of her. Holding his hand out for her, she tentatively grabbed it. He rubbed his thumb across her hand, and then gently pulled her into a hug. She wrapped her arms around him and instant relief flooded through her, the embarrassment she had felt slowly slipping away. He looked down as she looked up at him.
"I can't believe you heard that."
"You kind of blurted it out you weren't being quiet. You just said it too quickly."
She lightly slapped his arm. "Shut up."
"I'm only teasing."
"You're so insufferable sometimes."
"And you're so adorable…sometimes." he leaned down and kissed her cheeks. "I'll call you tomorrow, I promise. Good night."
"Good night, Drew." she watched as he walked down her street before turning right and disappearing from sight. With a smile she opened the door and walked up the stairs to her second floor apartment thinking about everything that happened, how an embarrassing moment turned into something special. She didn't know what would happen in the future but at that moment she was happy.

Notes: And that's it, just a very short, cute-ish story. Not sure if I love it as much as I did at first when I started writing but eh, hopefully someone enjoyed it. Writing more is the only way I'll get better so maybe expect more in the future?
