Mystic Memoir

Necessary Choice

Udonna winced, as she saw the young elf take Bowen in her arms, and coo to him, before putting him in the cradle beside the one where Clare was blissfully sleeping in, despite the shrill cries of his brother.

"Are you sure about this, sister?" Niella asked as she led her away from the babies, towards the door. "You can stay here with Bowen."

"Believe me, I do." She sighed, looking one last time at her baby and taking in his cries. "As much as I know you want to stay with Clare."

"I am the Gatekeeper. It is my responsibility to be in the frontlines." Niella said, her voice heavy with resignation.

"How can you ask me to sit idle knowing both my sister and my husband are fighting monsters for the safety of our realm and the future of our children?" She bit back, opening the door and walking out to see children play with each other in the open, while the adults carry on with their normal lives. The war had not reached their village yet, but it was a matter of time before it did. "I have magic, Niella. Powerful magic, and I can't… won't hide when I can make a difference out there."

Niella said nothing as she closed the door and raised her staff. Purple and silver glyphs materialized in the air before spreading out to completely encircle the cottage, and then coalesced with each other to form a glimmering dome that enveloped it.

Niella lowered her staff, and the dome vanished from sight.

The children had gathered nearby, watching the magic with an awed look on their faces. Their village was not unfamiliar with the arcane, but most were healers or scholars, using their magic subtly. The mystics on the other hand… even the simplest demonstration of their abilities was a visually appealing affair.

Udonna exhaled, knowing that despite not being visible, their home and more importantly, their children were protected by Niella's wards, which would not allow anyone with nefarious intent to enter the premises.

"Leanbow will not be happy to see you there." Her sister said, as they linked hands and a spell circle appeared underneath them.

"I know." She said, as they disappeared in sparkles of silver light.

Hope you all enjoyed reading this.

Udonna is one of my favourite characters, so wanted to write a story about her. These chapters might be non-chronological, even though all of these will be in the same continuity.

I have thought about writing a Mystic Force backstory for the longest time, and over time, got multiple often conflicting ideas on how to explore that concept. This story will explore the one which is most congruent to the show's canon, and while it won't be a full on backstory, since this fic will mainly focus on Udonna, I will try to incorporate as much as lore I can without derailing the fic. :)
