Narcissa and Andromeda were released from the hospital wing the next morning. They cornered Sirius on his way to breakfast.
"Well? What happened after Madam Pomfrey kicked everyone out yesterday?" Andromeda asked eagerly.
"Grandfather and I went to see Dumbledore," Sirius told them with a smirk. "And Dumbledore was so pale, that I thought he was going to faint any moment." Narcissa and Andromeda doubled over in laughter.
"I would have loved to see that!" Narcissa said with tears running down her face.
"Give us ALL the details!" Andromeda demanded.
"Sure, I'll tell you everything on the way to breakfast," Sirius promised. They headed to the Great Hall, Sirius explaining the meeting with Dumbledore on the way.
There wasn't any news for the next couple of days. The only news was that Dumbledore left it to Flitwick to punish the Ravenclaw third year. The student got one hundred points taken from Ravenclaw and three months worth of detention with Filch.
Three days after the attack on the Black sisters, Sirius sat at lunch, talking to James about how they couldn't play Quidditch as first years.
"Do you think McGonagall would bend the rules if I showed her just how good I am?" James asked. Sirius almost laughed aloud. James had no idea that McGonagall bent the rules in the future.
"No, I don't think so," Sirius answered. He went to pick up his glass of pumpkin juice, but before he could take a drink of it, his Heirship ring heated up then glowed red.
"Oh no," Sirius said, setting the glass down.
"What's your ring telling you?" Lily asked, leaning forward.
"The Black Heirship and Lordship rings can detect poisons," Sirius explained. Lily gasped. James swore under his breath.
Sirius got the attention of his cousins before holding up his hand with the ring. Within seconds, Narcissa and Andromeda were at the Gryffindor table.
"What's the poison in?" Narcissa asked frantically.
"The pumpkin juice, but don't worry, I didn't drink any of it," Sirius said.
"What is going on here?" McGonagall asked sharply.
"Someone put a poison into Sirius' juice, Professor McGonagall," Narcissa explained. McGonagall whirled around.
"Mr. Black, did you drink any of it?" she asked.
"No, my ring alerted me," Sirius answered her, holding up his finger with the ring.
"Oh, good," she said with relief in her voice. "But we need to figure out who was attempting to poison you and which poison it was." She turned to Severus. "Mr. Snape, if I am not mistaken, your family is known for being able to detect ingredients. Is that correct?"
"Yes, Professor," Severus confirmed, holding up the Prince Heirship ring to the juice. It glowed dark purple. "It's a fast-acting killer," he revealed. "It would have killed him within minutes."
Narcissa, Andromeda, and Lily had tears in their eyes, while James and Remus were clearly angry.
McGonagall nodded. "Thank Merlin you have your ring, Mr. Black," she said, her voice trembling. She then looked at the Black sisters. "One of you, please contact your family." Turning to James, she said, "Mr. Potter, please use your ring to check for the magical signature."
James held his ring up over the juice, and waited for a moment. Once it glowed green, he held it to his ear so he could listen to the person's name. He scowled.
"It's not just one person, but two people," he told McGonagall. "That Ravenclaw third year for starters." McGonagall frowned. "And Peter Pettigrew."
Sirius couldn't believe it. He had expected the Ravenclaw, but Peter too? He guessed Slytherin was showing Peter's true colors earlier than his old timeline.
"Mr. Pettigrew, Mr. Blackford!" McGonagall called. "My office! Now!"
"Now, Minerva, I can take care of this," Dumbledore said from behind her.
"I don't trust you to be fair, Headmaster," McGonagall said sternly. Before Dumbledore could say anything, the doors to the Great Hall banged open.
Sirius looked at the doors and grinned. "Regulus!" he exclaimed, jumping up and running to his brother. Regulus was looking scared, but a small smile came across his face when he saw Sirius running towards him.
"Are you alright?" Regulus asked. Sirius nodded.
"You're just in time for a shouting match between Dumbledore and McGonagall," Sirius said with a grin.
"We are so glad you are alright," Melania said, pulling Sirius into a tight hug. "We were so worried when Andromeda told us."
"Hello," Dumbledore greeted them. "Don't worry, I have this all under control."
"Who tried poisoning him?" Arcturus asked angrily.
"Mr. Pettigrew," Dumbledore responded. McGonagall glared at him.
"Not just him, Mr. Blackford as well," she said. "You cannot put all of the blame on Mr. Pettigrew. He and Mr. Blackford are equally responsible for this."
"Don't sugarcoat this, Dumbledore," Melania said coldly. Sirius and Regulus were surprised. They had never heard their grandmother speak in that tone to anyone before.
"There's no evidence that..." Dumbledore started.
"Heirship rings don't lie," Sirius interrupted. "The Black, Prince, and Potter rings are powerful."
"Sirius is correct," Arcturus said. "You cannot try the no evidence trick on us."
"This is the third target on our family, and you still refuse to do the right thing," Melania stated, glaring at Dumbledore. "And who knows who else has been targeted."
"Both boys attacked me last week," Amelia spoke up from the Hufflepuff table.
"Did you tell a professor?" Melania asked.
"Yes, Lady Black, and Professor Sprout promised to talk to Professor Dumbledore," Amelia replied.
"I did talk to him about it, but he just shrugged off my concerns," Professor Sprout commented.
"Well, the Board of Governors are meeting this evening, so we'll see what they have to say," Arcturus said. Dumbledore didn't look happy. Not in the slightest.
"Mr. Pettigrew, Mr. Blackford, as Deputy Headmistress of this school, this is your last warning," McGonagall said sternly, looking at the boys beside her. "One more toe out of line, and you'll be expelled from Hogwarts."
"I overrule Professor McGonagall," Dumbledore said. He stopped in his tracks when he saw wands pointed at him. McGonagall, Melania, Arcturus and all of the teachers were pointing their wands at Dumbledore.
"You were saying?" McGonagall asked angrily.
"I accept your decision, Minerva," Dumbledore said, knowing that if he said anything differently, he might find himself in St. Mungo's.
"That's what I thought," McGonagall stated. "Students, please head to your afternoon classes. Mr. Black, Miss Bones, Mr. Potter, and Mr. Snape, please stay behind." The students started heading to their classes. Sirius, James, and Severus allowed Arcturus to retrieve their memories of what happened that day, and Amelia allowed him to retrieve the memory of the attack on her. Sirius wished he could see the Board meeting. He then got an idea. Maybe he could attend the meeting.
