The Marauders were heading to the library to do some homework together when Lyanna stopped in her tracks. Regulus nearly ran into her.
"What is it, Lyanna?" Regulus asked, confused. Lyanna motioned towards a girl who was heading their way.
"Maple!" Lyanna called out. Sirius remembered her now. She had been at the Game Night the year before.
"Hi Lyanna," Maple said shyly, looking at the other Marauders with interest.
"These are my friends, and some of them are my family," Lyanna explained. She introduced them all to her.
"It's nice to meet all of you," Maple said with a gentle smile. "My brother says you've been trying to help him find a way to get around Hogwarts."
"Yes, we have," Sirius confirmed. "Speaking of, we have something to tell him. We can tell both of you, if you'd like."
Maple nodded. "Let me go get him," she said with a smile. "Where should we meet you?"
"We can go to the study room near the library," Lily offered. Maple agreed.
The Marauders sat in the study room near the library with Yeoman and Maple twenty minutes later.
"So, what's going on?" Yeoman asked curiously.
"Well, we took a look at a local library over the holiday break," Sirius started to explain.
"Sirius and I did," Regulus was quick to add, to make sure they knew who exactly went to the local library. "Including our grandparents and great-aunt."
"And we found something that we hope will help," Sirius added.
"What is it?" Yeoman and Maple asked in unison.
"There's something called a White Cane, which helps a visually impaired person navigate," Regulus informed them. "It can help you find stairs, holes, a wall, you get the point."
"That is amazing!" Yeoman exclaimed. "How can you get one of those?"
"Grandfather's working on it," Sirius assured him. "I'm sure he'll be talking to you soon."
"Oh, this is amazing news!" Maple exclaimed. "Thank you for helping Yeoman. That is so kind of you!"
"No problem," Sirius said with a grin.
A woman came through the Floo Network and arrived at the headmaster''s office. She was not very experienced in Flooing to places, seeing as she was a Squib. She stumbled out of the fireplace.
"Apologies," she said as she stood. "I do not often use the Floo Network."
"That is quite alright, Ms. Elphinstone," Arcturus said. Catriona Elphinstone was an Orientation & Mobility instructor, someone who worked with blind and visually impaired people. She was at Hogwarts to talk to the headmaster and deputy headmistress about working with Yeoman.
Arcturus gestured for her to sit. Ms. Elphinstone sat across from Headmaster Black and Deputy Headmistress McGonagall.
"We would like to discuss the possibility of you working with Mr. Yeoman Piché," McGonagall began. "How can you help Mr. Piché learn how to use the white cane?"
"Thank you for your question, Deputy Headmistress McGonagall," Ms. Elphinstone said. "I have been working with blind and visually impaired students for almost ten years, and while they have all been Muggles, I was here at Hogwarts once, when my sister was a student here and my parents wanted to visit her. I had a chance to really explore the castle, and while I cannot say that I know this castle from memory, I know more than enough to help Yeoman navigate it. I think it is crucial that he uses the cane in this school, especially with all the staircases."
"Your father, as you know, is a member of the Wizengamot," Arcturus stated. "He was the one to recommend you. I have a lot of respect for your father, so I am hopeful that you will help Mr. Piché in every way you can."
Ms. Elphinstone nodded. "Yes, Headmaster. I appreciate you putting your trust in me to help one of your students. I will do everything I can to help him navigate this castle."
"Very well," Arcturus said at last. "I will speak with Mr. Piché's Head of House, then we will get you scheduled with him. In the meantime, you can explore the castle to refresh your memory, if you'd like."
"I would love that," Ms. Elphinstone said with a smile. "Thank you."
The next day, Yeoman came into the library where the Marauders were doing homework. He unfolded something that was in his hand. "This is my new cane," he explained. "Headmaster Black has hired an instructor named Ms. Elphinstone to show me how to use this. She's starting with me tomorrow, but she gave it to me today."
"Brilliant!" Sirius exclaimed. "The Elphinstone family is a pure-blood family. One of their children is a Squib, so that must be who you're working with."
"It is," Yeoman confirmed. "She said she never came here as a student because she's a Squib, but she's been here before."
"That's great!" James said excitedly. "Hey, you could even use your cane as a weapon! If someone disarms you, just whack them with your cane!"
"James!" Lily exclaimed in horror. "That is NOT what it's used for!"
James shrugged. "You never know," he said.
Yeoman grinned. "Thanks James, but no, Ms. Elphinstone already told me that it's not to be used as a weapon."
James looked disappointed. "Alright, fine," he muttered.
"But you could still use it as a weapon in a life or death situation," Regulus pointed out.
Yeoman shook his head. "Honestly, I don't like being violent like that," he said.
"You're no fun!" James complained. Everyone laughed.
"Can we be there with you when you have your lesson tomorrow?" Remus asked.
"Sure, I don't see why not," Yeoman said with a smile.
"Great!" Capella exclaimed.
The Marauders spent the rest of the afternoon talking with Yeoman, getting to know him more, and doing homework. They were all excited to see how Yeoman's lesson would go the next day.
