Ruby hadn't gotten home until two in the morning to a frantic father Taiyang, and an angry sister Yang
Just as she was about to laugh about their similar names, two sets of eyes locked onto her before launching towards her and trapping her in a hug
"Thank Oum that you are alright Ruby, we heard what happened from Oz" her father started looking at her sternly
"And I am just so damn proud of my beautiful daughter for standing up to her first criminals!" Taiyang exclaimed immediately folding from his stern father facade
In mid group hug her scroll rang, taking a glimpse showed that it was Jaune sending his contact info which caused Ruby to tiredly smile
Glancing up she spotted the predatory grin of Yang who had clearly just peeped over her phone
With eyes that promised a thousand gossips later, Ruby was finally free to get to sleep
If there was one thing Jaune was happy about on his flight to Beacon, that would be the readily available garbage cans. Motion sickness was a bitch
He could bear the pointing and laughter at him because, well the thoughts of people other than his family didn't really mean much to him
And because what else was he going to do, puke on that cute blonde girls shoes?
Why is she getting closer?
"Don't tell me you're one of those" he murmured sticking close to the garbage just in case
"No I- wait one of what?" she asked confused falling right into Jaunes trap
"Heh, made a cute girl stutter on my first day. Guess something is finally going my-" dry heaving into the bin was honestly worse than the vomit part
Despite the action she actually managed a smile "Yeah okay vomit boy, I just wanted to check on you. Not a great look being sick on the first day"
After he regained his composure Jaune stood tall and gave the blonde a smile "Well thank you for worrying, My name is Jaune and I promise this kindness will not be forgotten and motion sickness is sadly my burden to bear, not as cool as stoically looking out the window, but you can't keep a figure like mine without making some sacrifices" That earned him a laugh
"The name's Yang, and If I was head over heels in a garbage can I wouldn't mind a checkup" She said with a matching smile which drew a laugh from Jaune
Maybe making new friends wasn't so hard after all
"Yang! Why do you keep leaving me alone?!" A familiar voice cried out
Ruby halted once she spotted them
"Please tell me you're not about to fight Jaune" She begged noticing how the two were standing off against each other
"Not with my fists at least" Yang responded cheekily which made Jaune's head snap towards her in surprise
'Is she flirting with me?'
"Gross Yang!"
"Relax, I'm just messing with you Ruby. Not like I could steal my cute little sisters new boyfriend" She said in a sing-song voice which made Ruby's face turn red
As they shot back and forth Jaune found himself spacing out 'Crazy and wonderful how the peace inside of Vale makes it possible for silly conversations like this... I guess it's a thing worth protecting'
Lost in thought he didn't hear what they said next as they both looked to him for an answer to a question
"Uhhh mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell?" Definitely the wrong answer
Time flies with banter, and suddenly the trio had arrived to Beacon Academy
It was a sight to behold, a tower strut out from the centre and it was surrounded by a jigsaw of pleasing archways. Kind of seemed like a wizard went to the future, took some adderall and said 'Fuck it, we ball'
As the three stepped down off the ramp, Yang waved at some people nearby
"Sorry to do this guys, but I see some old friends. Nice to meet you Jaune, and I'll catchup later Rubes!" she said before speeding off to join her friends
"Ditched again, that's the third time today" Ruby said in exasperation before flinching as Jaune put his hand around her shoulder
"Don't worry Ruby! You still have me and my big mouth to brighten your day" he said grinning from ear to ear
"Now lets go explore!"
After some brief looking around, Jaune had lost Ruby among the mass of students walking towards the school. She seemed to get tunnel vision when looking at weapons which was... quirky
BOOM!
A colourful cloud burst from in front of Jaune and he immediately drew his sword and ran towards it
Upon nearing the pit, he noticed the cute redhead he had been looking for previously lying right in the middle of it which of course drew a deep laugh from him
A girl with white hair was currently lecturing Ruby, so he decided to break the ice
"I'm glad someone could finally stop you Ruby" Jaune said stepping through the crowd and into the pit and getting a better look at the two he realized that recognized the white haired girl from somewhere
"Ahh your name is Weiss no? My sisters absolutely adore your music, I think I might actually still hold some trauma from having to sing backup" he said with an easy smile which he could tell immediately lowered her hostility
"Sorry about my friend by the way, I didn't see what happened, but I'm sure it was just because she's really excited about finally taking the first steps to becoming a huntress" from her looking over Ruby and letting out a sigh, Jaune expected them to be in the clear
"That's no excuse for unsafe operation around dust!" Guess not...
"Here, take this pamphlet!" Weiss shoved a paper that read 'dust for dummies' on the cover into Ruby's hands and then turned to him
"Please keep a closer watch on her, and yes my name is Weiss Schnee, heiress of the Schnee dust company. May I ask your name?"
Surprised at the switch-up Jaune barely had time to come up with something "Of course, it's Jaune Arc. It's a pleasure to meet you in person Weiss, the screens don't do you justice" That finally got him a small smile
"I'm pleased that my singing could have such an impact on your sisters, and I wish you luck in the coming initiation" She said before turning and starting to walk off
Jaune's eyes trailed down "Trust me, my sisters weren't the only ones it impacted" he muttered watching her sway away
"Why was she so nice to you? All I got is yelled at" Ruby complained with crossed arms still sitting down in the pit
Jaune walked over and held out his hand to her "Well you got a pamphlet, and I got nothing. So if you really think about it, you profited here"
Ruby chuckled and grabbed his hand "You really know just what to say to a girl"
"Wow, only my mothers ever told me that..." Jaune clenched his fist which Ruby didn't seem to notice and only laughed at his comment
"Onwards!" She declared dragging him along the path to Beacon tower
They arrived with no fanfare, thankfully after throwing and blowing up respectfully Jaune and Ruby were ready to get to sleep
"Hey Ruby, Jaune, I saved you a spot!" Yang yelled waving at them
As Ruby starting telling Yang what happened Jaune's eyes trailed towards Professor Glynda whom he felt obligated to thank for letting him attend
He excused himself from the sisters and met her serious eyes "Excuse me professor Goodwitch, I just wanted to thank you for the help with Torchwick and still letting me attend. I know the laws and rules in Vale differ from what I learned growing up so if you ever see me acting out of order please let me know. I can't promise perfection immediately, but hopefully with your help I can acclimate" he said genuinely which made the professor smile wide
"With talk like that, you might just make something of yourself here Mr. Arc" She replied before walking off
"and maybe we can talk about cute boys like that tall, blonde, heartbreaker over there?" Jaune heard someone say faintly and turned to see Weiss pointing at him
He held eye contact and smiled at her which caused her to blush at getting spotted before once again lecturing Ruby
Just as he was about to approach he was rudely interrupted at the headmaster starting his speech
"I'll...keep this brief. You have traveled here today in search of knowledge-to hone your craft and acquire new skills. And when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose – direction. You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step" That was it? Kinda lame. Was hoping for more guitar solos
After the speech everyone settled down to get some rest
