Well, then. Apparently my inner muse just had to suddenly come up with a bunch of potential events storylines, specifically ones that are based on how Disgaea establishes the existence of a multiverse. Unfortunately, most of them don't have anything directly to do with the main story (it's mostly that the characters just have ties to the Ebony Oleander), so I'll probably be uploading them as a separate thing that's more in the nature of side stories or something like that.
Disclaimer: I don't own Disgaea or Kuroinu.
The large group traveled in an awkward silence, mostly content to keep on guard in case of another attack. While Massoke and Sirius chose to be at the front alongside the knight commander, Sadie and Orion joined the flanking knights while Bellamy, Kiki, and Timmy stayed closer to the back.
"So, uh..." Massoke awkwardly started, "What can you tell us about those monsters back there? From all our time fighting, we've never seen any like that."
GIving him a strange look, the knight commander asked, "You've never seen ogres or imps before?"
Kiki quickly called out, "We know them. He mean way they act. Why they do that?" Now that they knew those were this world's versions of ogres and imps, they had to watch what they said, as well as be careful about who they deployed in the future.
The knight commander blinked in realization. "Oh, right, you're not from Eostia. You wouldn't know what's going on." Taking a deep breath, she explained, "Eostia is at war against Olga Discordia, the Dark Queen who rules over a massive legion of monsters. The war's been going on for several hundred years, and nobody remembers how it started." Glancing at the Ebony Oleander's expedition crew to make sure they were following along, she concluded, "Anyways, all we know now is that Olga won't stop until she completely takes over all of Eostia and has her way."
"Glad we could get a history lesson and all," interrupted Sadie, "but what does this have to do with the monsters being rapey?"
"Olga gives them that freedom," explained the knight commander. "She told them that as long as they served her, she would allow them to do what they wish with any girls they get their hands on while carrying out her orders."
Orion sneered. "Disgusting," she spat, "Such a thing is an affront to the natural order itself." Up front, Sirius growled in agreement, surprising the knights with his ability to understand the conversation.
"So why do you dress pervy?" asked Timmy. Before Kiki could whack him upside the head, he hastily elaborated, "I know some armors cover and weigh less because they're meant for fast fighters, but yours don't look like it."
"Do you think we want to wear this?" whined another knight, "I want to wear a full suit of armor that can actually protect me from attacks like the male knights do, but nooo, we have to wear this shit to distract our enemies and make it easier to beat them!"
"Millie, that's enough! We're not having this discussion again!" snapped the knight commander.
"You know it's true, Commander Lisa!" protested Millie. "Yeah, the monsters hold back and can't fight as well, but we still get scrapes and have to deal with the weather!"
"Is this a common occurrence?" asked Massoke.
"You wouldn't believe it," responded a knight with purple hair in a shoulder-length bob cut. Just like the knight commander, who they now knew as Lisa, her pauldrons were a bit more elaborate than the other knights', though not by much. "In fact, this argument actually happens a lot among the female knights, considering that Lady Claudia wears more, even if it isn't by much."
Humming, Massoke replied, "Well, that doesn't make much sense at all."
"Tell me about it," chuckled the knight. "Oh, my name's Helena. I'm the deputy knight." She held out her hand, seemingly unbothered by Massoke's appearance.
"I'm Massoke, though you probably already knew that from our introductions," said the Heavy Knight.
"So, mythril armor, huh?" asked Helena, curiously observing the armor's dull golden color. "How'd you get it?"
"Heavy Knights are given a special suit of armor upon graduating from the Knight Academy," explained Massoke. "It's magically enchanted to only work for the knight it's bound to, and evolves as the wearer gets stronger."
As Massoke and Helena continued to talk, Sadie watched in amusement. Of course, she was planning to use this as prime blackmail/teasing material. "No, I'm not!" she quickly whispered under her breath, lying as naturally as she breathed. "And don't think I didn't notice you rewriting the sentence when you suddenly had the idea to make that reference!"
Meanwhile, Bellamy focused on healing the knights. Thankfully, there wasn't much to do, as the worst things he had to treat were mild cuts and minor bone fractures. "I'm impressed," he commented, "You did well to avoid getting hurt even with how impractical your armor is."
"It takes a lot of hard work and timing," commented a knight, flexing her fingers as she rolled her wrists. "The monsters mostly aim to disarm our weapons and grab us, so we learn to be quick with our hands and feet."
Staring at the knights impassively, Kiki bluntly asked, "Why only knights? Why you not have mage or healer? Not make sense."
In unison, the knights scowled, grumbling, "The Church."
Sighing, Bellamy shook his head. "Somehow, I'm not surprised."
Timmy bemusedly looked at the knights, doing his best to focus on their faces and not look below. "What, are they a bunch of old farts who push laws that make it illegal to get healing from anyone other than them, say that any magic that isn't done by them is pure evil, preach that anyone who doesn't accept them as their religion is a heretic that needs to die, have a lot of interest in making money for some reason, and nobody can do anything about it because the corrupt people in the Church have too much influence power to be opposed or overthrown without causing problems for the country?"
Blinking in surprise, a knight replied, "That's actually not too far off. How'd you know?"
Blushing when she leaned closer, Timmy squeaked, "I like reading in my spare time. Lord Exousia has a section in the library dedicated to old mission reports and logs so we can learn from them. One of the ones I read was for a mission where someone spent three decades infiltrating a church to rise up the ranks, identify the corrupt members, and bring them to justice."
"Oh, that's one of mine," Bellamy said in surprised recognition. "Having over a century of experience as a bishop was pretty helpful in selling the act as a new priest with lots of potential. It was easy to trick the deacons, but I had to be careful with everyone else, since a lot of them were on the high priest's payroll."
"Wait, hold on a second!" interrupted Millie, dropping back as she overheard the conversation. "You've been a bishop for over a century? Just how old are you?" Finally noticing a certain detail, she added, "And why are you wearing shackles on your wrists?"
Bellamy smiled faintly. "Well, we're not exactly human, are we?" Tapping his pointed ears to prove his point, he continued, "Aside from Timmy, we're older than we look. As for the shackles, it's-"
Timmy declared, "Our group leader is of the Clergy, and you know he is of the bishop rank at least. Answer me this – can one truly call themself a saint if they are ignorant of sin? Can a monk claim to have reached the heights of enlightenment if they know not the depths of depravity? Can a-"
Millie lightly flicked the boy's forehead, frowning. "It's rude to interrupt people, you know?" Feeling slightly guilty when she saw his pout, she turned back to Bellamy. "So the shackles are symbolic, huh? Well, it's not like we can judge."
"Enough talk!" called Lisa. "We've returned to Ken!" Soon enough, the sight of city walls came into view, prompting everyone to pick up the pace. At the gates, she turned to Bellamy and said, "This is where we part ways. Since you're new to Eostia and are here on official business, I'll submit a report directly to Lady Celestine so you can speak to her. Just don't cause any trouble. Understood?"
"Of course," Bellamy said smoothly. "You don't have anything to worry about. But before you go, could you be so kind as to recommend us places to sell things or have a meal?"
...
Having sold some random trinkets and eaten a meal at a small tavern, the group headed towards the massive castle where they were to meet Celestine. "Remember, we need to make an opportunity to call Lord Exousia here so he and Celestine can negotiate," muttered Bellamy.
"I know plan. My job is keep Timmy quiet so he not ruin things," whispered Kiki.
"I'm ready to hold knights off if things go wrong," confirmed Massoke.
"Sirius and I are already noting where the guards are," Orion grunted as she and her partner sniffed the air.
"Let's do this," smiled Sadie.
Several minutes later, they were surprised to find themselves in a meeting chamber, seated at a table with seven figures. Two were clearly grown women, while another two were young adults, one was a girl on the cusp of adulthood, one was a girl who seemed to be roughly Timmy's age, and the last girl had a child-like physique.
The woman wearing a risqué robe leaned forward, her blonde hair framing her soft-featured face as she rested her elbows on the table and locked her fingers together. "Welcome to Ken," she spoke gently, "I am Celestine, leader of the Seven Shields Alliance and hailed the Goddess Reborn. And these are my fellow Shield Princesses – Claudia, Alicia, Prim, Maia, Kaguya, and Luu-Luu." With each name, the others nodded towards the group. "May I ask that you introduce yourselves?"
Bowing his head lightly, Bellamy responded, "It is an honor to meet you, Your Grace. I am Bellamy, leader of our expedition group. And my fellow members are Kiki, Massoke and his sister Sadie, Orion and her partner Sirius, and Timmy." He gestured to each member of the party, noticing how Celestine's group tensed up when Kiki, Massoke, Orion, and Timmy were introduced.
Nodding in thanks, Celestine continued, "It is to my understanding that you helped my knights protect a town despite being new to Eostia and having no incentive to assist. For that, you have my thanks. May I ask what business you have in our country?"
Bellamy said, "Simply put, back in our home, we detected some form of magic anomaly, so an investigation was initiated. We're the expedition group. We don't know much about it, so you'd have to ask our leader about it."
"And when will your leader be available to speak?" asked the woman named Claudia, eyes narrowing.
"Right now, if you'd like." A magic circle erupted from the floor, prompting the Seven Shields to be on guard. Rising from the circle, Exousia stepped forth as the light died away. However, while he had dressed somewhat casually at the initial briefing, he now wore attire befitting of an Overlord. He wore a grey vest with gold embroidery over a cream-colored shirt, black pants that looked as though they were woven from darkness itself, black Chelsea boots that glinted in the light, and a dark red ascot with a diamond brooch in the center. Over it all, he donned a black overcoat and a long violet scarf that bore images of oleanders in silver trim on the ends.
'Holy shit,' thought Bellamy, 'He really can dress up for the occasion when he has to.'
Claudia, Alicia, and Maia were about to leap into action when the group of demons (not that they knew) got out of their seats to bow to the newcomer. "Lord Exousia, we've been awaiting you," Bellamy reported.
"I know, I was watching the whole time," sighed Exousia, gesturing to them to sit down once more. Turning to Celestine, he folded an arm over his chest and bowed slightly. "A pleasure to meet you, Lady Celestine, and thank you for being receptive of my subordinates. My apologies for arriving in such a rude manner, but this matter is of the utmost importance."
Suppressing her surprise at his appearance, Celestine shook her head, gesturing to the others to stand down. "This room has seals to ensure that no magic can be used to get in or out," she said. "But never mind that now. What do you mean?"
Claudia protested, "Lady Celestine, you cannot possi-"
"It's fine," Celestine assured. "I knew this would happen." Eyes widening, Claudia looked as though she was about to argue, but she instead sat back down, eyebrows furrowed and lips pursed.
"What do you mean, Lady Celestine?" asked Alicia. Hearing a scoff, she turned to Maia and asked, "Do you have something to say, mercenary?"
"Isn't it obvious?" drawled the red-haired woman. "She foresaw them in her dreams about the future. Shouldn't you already know this?"
Exousia's eyes faintly narrowed. 'Prophetic dreams?' he thought, 'We'll have to keep an eye on her. Maybe get a Succubus to monitor her dreams?'
Before Alicia could respond, Claudia ordered, "That's enough, you two!" Sighing, she gestured to everyone else seated at the table. "They have the discipline and respect to keep silent. While I have mixed feelings myself, I trust that Lady Celestine knows what she is doing. Now settle down and let her speak with their leader."
Now that he could speak, Exousia answered Celestine's question. "Back home, our observatories noticed a magic discrepancy. While most of the time they're just caused by weather and wild animals, this one stood out in that it wasn't caused by local factors." Flicking a wrist and conjuring a simple wooden chair, he sat down and sighed. "Upon the use of tracking spells, we managed to discover what the source of the anomaly came from. It's here, somewhere in Eostia."
Celestine was silent, rolling his words around in her head. Humming, she slowly said, "I see... Perhaps we can be of assistance to each other." Gesturing to the map on the wall, she explained, "It's to my understanding that Commander Lisa has given you a brief summary of the war against Olga and her forces. Whatever spell or ritual she's doing may be what your people detected. I would like to ask for your assistance."
Exousia closed his eyes in thought. 'This Olga person seems to be our best lead, so we might as well accept.' Opening them once more, he held out a hand to Celestine. "Very well," he said, "Let's see how this goes."
Shaking his hand, Celestine thanked him profusely. "Thank you so much! Perhaps now we can finally end the war and bring peace back. This means so much, Sir...?"
Smiling faintly, Exousia answered, "I am Exousia, captain of the Ebony Oleander mobile hub and Overlord of the Netherworld of Roaming Cities."
Thankful, Celestine repeated, "Thank you so much!" However, this time she was much more emotional. Taking a deep breath to calm down, she explained, "I know the meaning of that name from ancient texts. According to my prophetic dreams, help would arrive in the form of a nation led by one who bears a name of power and authority. But… Overlord? Netherworld? Lord Exousia, by any chance, are you a-"
"Demons!" spat a priest as he broke out of the closet in the corner of the room, having been hiding inside since the meeting began. He had been sent by the Church to spy on the meeting, and if possible, prevent the outsiders from reaching an accord with the Goddess Reborn. "You'll pay for daring to taint the city with your presences! Take this!" Taking out a scroll, he chanted the contents, a manic grin on his face spreading when an orb of light formed in the air. "You won't survive this," he gloated.
"So what if we're demons? Is there a problem?" Exousia calmly questioned. "And what makes you so sure that we'll die from your spell?" He was asking rhetorically, of course. He wouldn't be asking if he wasn't sure that he or the expedition crew would survive. That, and Bellamy didn't look too worried.
"This spell states that the pure shall be enveloped by the Goddess's light, and the impure shall be marked by Her wrath. And how much farther from pure can a demon be? Now die!" The orb of light exploded, enveloping the room in its glow.
When the light faded away, so did the priest's smile. "What the? How can this be? This is impossible!"
Before him, everyone remained untouched aside from having glowing orbs above their heads. Claudia, Maia, Bellamy, Kiki, Sadie, and Sirius had red orbs floating above them, while everyone else had white orbs, with the exception of Kaguya, who had a yellow orb.
"What was the spell?" Timmy asked, trying to bat away the orb above his head.
Interestingly, Celestine had a massive blush on her face, actively avoiding looking at anyone. Shooting Claudia an apologetic look, she hastily answered, "Itsanoldpuritychecker!" Taking a shaky breath, she explained, "It's an old spell the Church would use to see which priests, priestesses, and nuns were following their vows and which ones were breaking them."
"So it's a spell that identifies who is and isn't a virgin," Bellamy translated, not even bothering to phrase it gently.
It was chaos among the Princess Knights. Claudia sank into her seat, covering her eyes with her hands as she blushed furiously. Alicia and Prim's faces burst into red as they looked down at the table, refusing to look at anyone. Maia and Luu-Luu burst into laughter at the debacle, nearly falling out of their seats. Kaguya stared at the yellow orb floating above her, wondering just what exactly it meant.
Among the Ebony Oleander members, it was much calmer, though still a bit chaotic nonetheless.
"In my defense, it's not like I had the time…" Exousia muttered, scratching his cheek idly.
Bellamy shrugged. "What?" he said, "You know I'm in a relationship with Carmel. Of course we've had sex."
Kiki bluntly stated, "Tantric rituals." She refused to elaborate.
Massoke clutched Sadie by her shoulders, shaking her wildly. "What the hell, sis?" he roared, "When did that happen? Mom's going to kill you!" Sadie was busy trying no to throw up.
Orion patted Sirius's head. "Sirius has a mate and pups," she said. "But me? I'm not planning on having a relationship yet."
Timmy blinked in confusion. "What's a virgin?"
The room went silent as everyone stared at Timmy, completely in disbelief that someone didn't know what sex was in a crossover fic with a hentai anime. And then they all mechanically turned to glare at the priest, who was trying to sneak out of the room.
With a snap of her fingers, Kiki conjured a massive bone that slid through the door handles, preventing them from being opened. "You stay. No go."
Massoke and Maia cracked their knuckles in unison, giving smiles that promised a world of pain. "You're dead, buddy," the Mythril Knight threatened calmly.
Claudia, Alicia, and Sadie emotionlessly drew their swords without removing them from their scabbards, which was somehow scarier than it would be if they did draw their swords. "You're lucky our swords don't have a flat side," the Rune Knight lamented.
Kaguya shot the priest a look of disappointment. "You fool." Then she returned to attempting to analyze why her light orb was yellow, fully unaware that it was because of The Loophole, as a certain song would put it.
Luu-Luu smiled as she joined Massoke and Maia in cracking her knuckles. "Sorry, but my axe would probably kill you," she apologized, though she didn't sound very sorry. "You'll just have to settle with my fists instead." Let it be remembered that despite her small frame, she was absurdly strong even without her weapon.
Bellamy replaced his Innocent Spear with an Almighty Staff. "Did you know?" he commented offhandedly, "A favorite party trick of my people is a healing spell that's channeled through physical impact instead of casting. The fun part is that it doesn't do anything about pain."
Orion distracted Prim and Timmy with Sirius, showing off the Mystic Beast's fur. "It's soft, isn't it? I help Sirius take care of it once a week," she explained. As if on cue, Sirius barked pridefully.
Celestine was about to ask them to stop when Exousia held up a hand in front of her. "Let them have this," he said, "It's better to let them get it out than keep it bottled up. Besides, I'm more curious about why a priest was spying on our meeting, which was supposed to be private."
The high elf was silent. Why was a priest from the Church spying on them? She knew that there were corrupt members; after all, expecting a place to be completely devoid of corruption was unrealistic. But surely the corruption at most consisted of occasionally pocketing a few coins from tithes. It couldn't have reached so high up in the Church that they would act so boldly, right? ... Right?
Celestine was so lost in thought that she didn't notice that the priest's beating had already begun, and would not break it up until it was time to leave the private meeting chamber... which was in half an hour.
Quick rant: I was so stressed out trying to figure out which girl was stationed at which city. And with how I know that the anime changed things from the original visual novel, I knew that it wouldn't exactly be a reliable source either. For example, Geofu. One source said Alicia, another said Claudia, a third said Luu-Luu, and a fourth said Celestine. And while I now know that Claudia is the one in charge of Geofu, the source I got it from didn't say anything about the other cities, so thanks to MasterNito for helping out with the whole list.
