Chapter 6: Ascension
Story Start.
Previously from the Chronicles of the Eternal Sage: Far Horizons…
"Anyway," waved Tiberius, "I want to get back at these Jewish priests, against these impudent Sanhedrin. So, I will propose to the Senate that we should add this Jesus of Nazareth to the Imperial Cult."
Naruto's reaction was quick. "No."
"Why not?" asked the old emperor, leaning back in his seat.
"You want that revolt in Hebron spreading to Jerusalem? No. You may not live to see it, but the Jews will revolt in massive numbers eventually, so there is no point in hurrying things that will come eventually."
The Emperor raised an eyebrow at the apparent prediction; his aged façade was confused at the Senator's words, and his heart became heavy with the thought of a massive revolt against Rome, and Naruto noticed it.
"Do not fret; I will aid Rome in quelling that revolt in the future when you are long gone."
He turned away and walked away from the Emperor, but not before he left some parting words. "They have forsaken their God when He came to them and killed Him, so, the day will come, that God will forsake them at the time of their greatest need… I bid you a good day, Tiberius; may the winds be fair to you."
-Nazareth: XXV March I B.C.-
"Hail, Κεχαριτωμένη… You-Who-Have-Been-Made-Full-of-Grace…"
With those words, everything began to fall into place. Countless years in the making it were prophesized by great men of old. The young woman—Mary of Nazareth, sat in silence as Gabriel continued. "The Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women."
She found herself troubled at what Gabriel said, and in her mind ran one thing. "What sort of salutation this might be?"
Gabriel understood well what she thought and gave assurance with her calm voice, saying, "Fear not, Mary, for thou found grace with God."
Proclaiming in the same manner, she went on. "Behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb and bear forth a son; and thou shalt call His name: Jesus."
"He shall be great and shall be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give unto Him the throne of his father David; and He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever. His kingdom shall have no end."
The angel remained on her knees but met Mary's eyes. "Thy cousin, Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. Because with God, no word shall be impossible."
Behind the shadows of Gabriel's light, there was Naruto, listening and watching as he was asked to do so by God. He observed everything so that he could put everything into parchment for records in posterity. He heard Mary reply to Gabriel warily. "How can this be, since I have no husband?"
"The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee; therefore, the child to be born shall be called Holy, the Son of God."
Mary knew her faith well; after all, her parents prayed to have her, and they dedicated her to the service of God. With that, she surrendered her heart to the Lord, replying to Gabriel with a smile. "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word."
With her consent given, Gabriel bowed and vanished from her sight, leaving the young woman alone. Indeed, Naruto had left her moments after the angel did, but not before paying her another look, unbeknownst to her.
The stillness of that night was something he would always remember from time to time because that was when the fate of the world changed forever—the point of no return, from the furthest east of Augustus Cæsar's realm that a child would be born to change the world.
The air within Mary's humble abode grew still, imbued with a lingering warmth from the divine presence that had departed. She sat for a moment; her heart was racing yet steadying with each breath. A weight hung upon her, yet not of dread, but of purpose—vast, immeasurable, and ordained by God Himself.
Outside, the cool night wind swept through the streets of Nazareth, ruffling the edges of Naruto's cloak as he stepped away from the scene. The stars above glimmered faintly as their light dulled by the memories of what he had just witnessed despite already knowing what it entailed.
Pausing by a weathered olive tree, Naruto leaned against its trunk and gazed at the distant hills bathed in silver moonlight. "Gabriel didn't even flinch; I'm impressed," he murmured to himself, recalling the ancient angel's serene confidence, which had been very familiar to him.
His eyes remained on the hills for a while, wondering about all those years that went by, travelling the world, observing them, writing them, and building what he could. After all, thousands of years have passed by, yet nothing has changed with him, untouched by time.
"I am a watcher for now… well, at least not like Azazel and his ilk."
He looked up to the heavens that night, his eyes reflecting their twinkling lights, and he found them beautiful.
-Ierusalem, Iudæa: X May A.D. XXXIII-
"You've always looked up to Heaven, even during the day," a voice entered Naruto's ears as he rested beneath an olive tree. His eyes turned to the source of the voice as he saw the one who had conquered Death singlehandedly.
"Ah, now you pay a visit to me in the flesh, my lord," replied Naruto as he emerged from his position and stood. "What can I do for you?"
Jesus smiled at him and beckoned him to come with Him, and without anything better to do, Naruto followed His call wherever he would be brought.
However, his thoughts wandered back to just a few weeks ago, during that horrifying sight of the Crucifixion, on how tortured that flesh was and how much pain and suffering He endured that day. The natural philosopher in him wondered about the physical aspects of that day, yet he felt that it was not the right time to mull about such things.
"What matters is the situation at hand, my old friend." As if He had read his mind, Jesus spoke as they walked towards a familiar place.
Naruto scoffed briefly as he smiled.
"Can you not?"
The Lord chuckled and replied, "Some things can't be helped."
"I suppose so, given the things I have seen and experienced in my long years," replied Naruto as he continued to walk behind God. he found it somewhat surreal, but Christ only chuckled as they kept walking until they arrived atop Mount of Olives, and they beheld Jerusalem in her grandeur.
"I will go home to the Father soon, as is required." Jesus broke the silence as the two of them watched the walled city go about its daily routine, and from where they were, they could hear the bustling city, from the merchants to the pilgrims and even the legionnaires.
"But before that, we need to discuss the current imprisonment of the demons, as you witnessed."
Naruto nodded, prodding Him to continue.
"It is, as we all know, something that will not last, given how they had prepared for war beforehand, and soon, the three idiots will be let loose, slowly but surely."
The two figures stood side by side now, overlooking Jerusalem in its splendour, bathed in the golden light of the afternoon sun. The Mount of Olives has stood as a silent witness to countless moments of significance, yet none quite like this.
"The three idiots," Naruto said with a smirk, though his tone held no levity. "I assume you mean Lucifer, Beelzebub, and Astaroth?"
Jesus gave a slight nod; His expression was serene yet heavy with the weight of what was to come. "Indeed, their time of imprisonment will wane, though not by any strength they possess. No, mankind, in its pride and greed, will fully lose the chains. They are not without aid; their servants work slavishly to prepare their way."
"The way humans keep making the same mistakes… it's almost as if they never learn," he muttered. "Kingdoms fall. Corruption spreads. War follows."
The God-Man glanced at him, His lips curving in a faint smile. "And yet, even in the midst of failure, there is hope. That is what you must always remember, Naruto. Mankind's greatest strength lies not in its imperfection but in its ability to rise after each fall."
Naruto tilted his head, considering those words. "I have witnessed it myself, which is why I truly agree with you. But now, things will be different in the long run—you have made the Ecclesia, built upon that rock that is Simon Peter, and it will move the world."
Jesus' smile deepened as Naruto acknowledged the foundation that He had laid. He turned His gaze back toward the city, where the noise of the bustling streets seemed distant, almost muted. The weight of history rested upon that moment, and despite his long years, Naruto knew that what was coming next would echo through eternity.
"Indeed," Jesus said, watching the city as merchants bartered and pilgrims prayed. "And even as darkness rises, light will always endure. The Church—my Church, built upon the rock, will face storms, trials, and persecutions. It will be the dispenser of salvation and the target of great evils. I promised that the gates of hell will never prevail against it, and it won't. You'll be there; you will see to it."
Naruto turned to face Him fully, his expression unreadable. "You wish for me to act as its guardian, then?"
"Not as its guardian," Jesus corrected him gently, "but as a witness, a guide, a shield when the time calls for it. Rome will persecute them later, but before that, the Jews will persecute those who have been baptised. Before I depart, I will leave my disciples a command to baptise the world in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost."
"The nascent Church, followers of the Way, will be tested by fire, refined through tribulation," Jesus continued, His eyes on Naruto's own. "It will not be easy, and there will be those who seek to corrupt it, to wield it as a tool for power than as a vessel of salvation. And yet, there will be those who will rise to defend it, to restore and renew it when it falters."
Naruto considered those words carefully, his thoughts afloat. "So… the Church will not be immune to the ambitions of men?"
"You will see it for yourself when the time comes; the Father has given you the sight to see," replied Jesus, continuing with a sigh. "No institution built among men can remain untouched by their desires, fears, and struggles. Even my followers will have their moments of weakness, divisions will arise, and heresies will emerge. But the Holy Ghost will be there to guide them, and the faithful will always find their way back, for I will always be with them."
"That said." Naruto perked up from the change in the tone of Jesus' voice.
"You are a senator and a general of Rome… and Rome, too, will play its part in this grand design," Jesus continued, His gaze unwavering. "They have been given authority by Heaven when they put the Son of Man to death, and at first, they will be the hammer against my people, but in time, it will become the heart of My Church. What is now the empire of the eagle and the sword shall one day bear my cross."
Naruto arched an eyebrow, the weight of those words settling into his mind. "Rome? The same Rome that crucifies criminals and revels in its power? You're telling me that one day, it will stand for You?"
Jesus nodded, His expression filled with certainty. "Yes, but not before great suffering. There will be chaos, bloodshed, and a test of faith unlike any other… Peter will die there, and so will Paul."
"Paul? Who's that?"
Naruto only received a mysterious smile from Jesus, though He did reply. "You'll meet him in a few years, long after I have returned to the Father. Regardless, their blood, and the blood of many other martyrs, will be the seed of the Church in its early years. The Romans will shed them and, one day, change their hearts."
Naruto exhaled, his mind racing with the implications. "So, persecution is inevitable, yet it will serve to strengthen what you have built. But what of the others? The ones who have already begun to stir in the shadows? Satan's agents will not sit idly by while Your followers grow."
Jesus' gaze grew sombre. "No, they will not. The enemy will whisper in the ears of men, sow discord among my people. You'll see that soon enough, but Naruto, my people, remember this: that those who are baptised will no longer be Jew, nor Greek, nor Roman, nor any gentile. They will be one in Me, bound not by blood, but by the Holy Ghost."
"I leave Rome to you, Naruto; your legions follow you loyally. You have influence that power that few possess, and when the time comes, you will know how to wield it. False prophets will arise, schisms will appear, and many will be led astray."
Naruto nodded solemnly, aware of the responsibilities being settled upon his shoulders. But before he could say anything further, Jesus continued.
"You already know the gist of how this would end, given your friendship with Aurelius… Bishop and Emperor of Rome from another world, and another time."
Naruto crossed his arms, remembering the man who had crossed worlds and befriended him; then, it came to his mind like a bright light. "Ah, you want me to change the course of this world, don't you, my lord?"
Jesus smiled knowingly. "Not change, Naruto. Guide. The course is set, but the way it unfolds can be shaped. My Church will grow, that is certain, but how it will spread can be shaped. You will act when necessary, ensuring the will of the Father is carried out. Guide the course of history for the better, at least, better than the other ones."
Naruto exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "And if Rome resists? If the Senate, the Generals, and the Legions refuse to listen?"
"Then patience, Naruto," Jesus said. His expression remained calm and unwavering. "The time of transformation will not come swiftly, you know this. The hearts of men are slow to change, especially when they are steeped in pride."
"War is coming, my friend," warned Jesus. "You will know when it starts; all you can do is prepare."
Naruto nodded; he could feel it in his bones. "I know, and thankfully, I'm not blind; apparently, the old man Aurelius has been working in the shadows of Rome after he departed from Leviathan and I."
Jesus nodded. "Yes, he has. The Father has charged him to prepare the way that will outlast this present order of things. One day, you, Naruto, might be emperor one day."
Naruto smirked, shaking his head. "Me? Emperor of Rome? That's not something I ever considered. I prefer the shadows, moving where I am needed, rather than sitting on a throne."
"You were the Hokage long ago," Jesus said, and Naruto playfully glared at Him, but he allowed Him to continue. "That may have been different, I should say. But in many ways, leadership is leadership. You know that sometimes, the greatest influence is not wielded from the shadows but from the seat of power itself. In time, Naruto, you will see where you are meant to stand. And when the moment comes, you will choose."
In a blink of an eye, followed by a mild breeze, Jesus was nowhere to be found. Vanished to someplace that required His attention, no doubt, to make Himself known to His apostles.
Naruto sighed, running a hand through his golden hair once more as he turned his gaze toward the north, to Galilee. He could feel it; the world had changed, and he had been placed at its centre. For all his experiences and wisdom that surpassed Solomon gained over centuries, he still felt some uncertainty pressing upon his shoulders.
"You always leave me with more questions than answers, my Lord," he muttered to himself, his voice carrying into the wind. "But then, that's life."
The rustling of nearby olive trees drew his attention. A familiar presence approached him, one that carried the faintest traces of divine power yet remained subdued to the earthly realm. Gabriel, ever watchful, stepped forward, her luminous form partially concealed by a simple cloak.
"He told you much," she observed; her voice was gentle yet firm.
Naruto turned to her with a smile, nodding. "And yet, I feel as though I understand so little… He speaks of destiny as though I should already know my place."
Gabriel regarded him with a knowing smile. "Faith is not knowing every step, but trusting in the path set before you. Even you, beloved, must walk in faith."
Naruto began to walk alongside Gabriel; their steps were slow as they descended from the Mount of Olives overlooking Jerusalem. The city remained busy, and during the evening, shimmering under the moonlight, an ancient beacon standing on the precipice of something greater than any empire before it.
"You hesitate, beloved," Gabriel noted, her voice was quiet, almost teasing. "You rarely do."
He sighed. "I don't hesitate. I observed. The Lord has placed me on this path, but even I wonder where it leads."
Gabriel chuckled. "You seek to know what only the Father sees. But the truth is, your place is wherever He wills you to be. You must accept that."
"Have you always been this wise?" Naruto jested, smirking at the angel.
She tilted her head playfully. "I've had eternity to learn."
"Not because you've stuck with me?" He jokingly asked.
Gabriel laughed softly, the sound of which was like a gentle chime in the evening air. "Perhaps. You've certainly given me much to observe."
Naruto shook his head, amused, before his expression grew more contemplative. "Gabriel, do you ever wonder what the world will look like centuries from now? Will it remember this moment? This city, this time?"
She considered his words for a moment before responding. "Time moves forward, but the will of the Father remains constant. Jerusalem will endure, as will the faith born here. The trials will come, but so too will the triumphs."
He exhaled slowly, glancing back at the city below. "Then I suppose we should be ready for both."
Gabriel nodded. "Yes. And we will face them together. Come, beloved; the night is still young. There is much to prepare for."
-Cæsarea Maritima-
Across the mountains, into the coast, where the capital of Roman Iudæa stood, the old emperor Tiberius sat in his private chamber, the dim lamplight dancing over aged parchment and the weight of power pressing down upon him. Outside, the distant murmur of the harbour blended with the rhythm of the waves.
His face was etched with exhaustion, his mind preoccupied not with conquest but with the growing financial and economic crisis gripping Rome. The year had brought uncertainty, the coffer of the empire was strained, and the aftershocks of reckless financial ventures.
Tiberius rubbed his temple, setting aside the latest scroll filled with bleak assessments from across the empire. A knock at the chamber doors pulled him from his thoughts, and he straightened as the doors swung open, revealing an imperial aide. "Cæsar, news from Jerusalem."
He exhaled, gesturing for the man to continue.
"The Nazarene's followers grow bolder despite his execution. And there is another presence—Senator Uzumaki was seen among them."
Tiberius rubbed the bridge of his nose in annoyance. "What is he doing? That man appears at the strangest of times."
The aide hesitated before adding. "There are whispers, my lord. Some say he did nothing when the Nazarene was crucified. Others claim he wept. But now, he is busy doing something else."
Tiberius' gaze drifted toward the horizon beyond the palace walls. "The man who has lived longer than Rome existed… send a message to him: tell him I need his aid in dealing with our current financial crisis. The followers of the Nazarene can wait; Rome needs him."
The aid bowed and departed, leaving Tiberius alone with his thoughts. He leaned back in his chair, contemplating his next move. If Naruto Uzumaki could stabilise the empire's economy, then perhaps he was worth more than the Senate often claimed. Perhaps, in some strange way, he was a necessity for Rome's future.
"Let us see if the immortal will answer the call of the mortal," he muttered, sighing afterwards.
-Bethania, XIII May A.D. XXXIII-
In Bethany, a village nestled on the slopes of the Mount of Olives, the wind carried the whispers of destiny as the dawn broke in the sky, casting a golden light upon the gathered apostles, Simon Peter leading them. It has been forty days since Christ descended into hell and resurrected from the dead. The remaining 11 apostles stood in reverent silence, their eyes fixed upon the risen Christ.
Jesus stood before them calmly, and His presence radiated divine glory. His robes shimmered with an ethereal glow, and His gaze held the wisdom of eternity. He looked upon His followers, knowing this was the moment of transition, the beginning of the next chapter of their mission.
Naruto and Gabriel stood some distance away from the disciples, watching the moment unfold with solemn awe. The air around them thrummed with celestial power, and with it, the very fabric of the heavens stirred by the divine.
"I have spoken before, while I was still with you, that everything written about Me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled," Jesus said as the apostles listened attentively, their minds being actively opened to understand His words.
"Thus, it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, thus, if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained, beginning from Jerusalem…" He continued as the others remained in silence.
Jesus lifted His hands in blessing and spoke once more, "Do not depart from Jerusalem; wait for the promise of the Father. You have heard from Me: John baptised with water, but you will be baptised with the Holy Ghost not many days from now."
The apostles had questions in their minds, but Peter spoke and asked Him, "Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom of Israel?"
Christ smiled and said to them, "It is not for you to know the times or the seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Ghost comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Iudæa and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
"Then," He continued as the apostles listened. "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. I go to prepare a place for you. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you."
"He that believes and is baptised shall be saved," Jesus continued. "But he that does not believe shall be damned. And behold, I am with you, always."
The earth trembled as everyone looked towards Him. He waved His hands goodbye and walked towards the rising sun. Then, He was carried by a cloud as the heavens parted to receive Him, enveloped by a great light, He vanished from their sight with blast of a mighty wind.
Peter walked forward to the rising sun. His heart was filled with both awe and sorrow. He fell to his knees as his Lord ascended. The air grew still, save for the soft echoes of His final words lingering in his ears and his fellow apostles.
Everyone else gazed upwards to heaven, and suddenly, two men in white robes stood by them, familiar angels, Naruto thought as he recognised the two, Remiel and Sahariel. The two spoke at the same time, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into the heavens? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come again in the same way as you saw Him go."
Naruto exhaled, his eyes tracing the fading light of the Ascension. "So it begins," he silently murmured.
Gabriel, whose wings were now revealed and partially unfurled, gazed at the disciples, who all now kneeled in silent prayer. "The world will never be the same, and you will be there to see it through."
Peter rose first; his voice was unwavering as he turned to his brother apostles. "Brothers, we will do what He has commanded. We must go forth."
One by one, the others stood, resolute in their expressions as the voice of their Lord remained in their minds.
"They will have trials ahead, but as the Lord said, they will not walk alone," said Naruto to Gabriel, who nodded in agreement.
"Nor will you," replied Gabriel with a smile. "The work has only begun, and I will be with you."
Naruto turned toward the horizon, nodding to the apostles as they began to leave, back to Jerusalem as ordered by their Lord. He knew the world changed in a single moment, and the future would be unlike anything before.
"Then, let us begin," he said, his voice steady with resolve.
Gabriel spread her wings fully, the radiance of her form shining against the morning sky. "Yes, let us."
With that, she held hands with Naruto and flew away in a burst of light.
