Chapter 19

Edward

Edward had been applying for every loan and funding he could find to go to college. He had decided he wanted to be a teacher. If he had to, he would complete an online course. But the thought of cleaning up after dogs at his mom's vet's practice and running around after people in the hospital was becoming too much for him. He knew he had to suck it up and deal with the consequence of his past behavior. He knew he would have to speak to his parents about it. But he also knew he would have to be respectful, as they had given him a chance to make things right, and he had kept up with his side of the arrangement.

He was still having trouble with Rachel, thinking they were a couple. She wouldn't shut up about going to school together. Rebecca told Edward to tell Rachel he was thinking of going to California. She explained she wanted her twin sister as far away as possible; she was sick of living in her shadow and had most of her life. Tyler thought that sounded like a good plan; he even offered to get all the school prospectuses. Then he could pretend to be interested in going there. Tyler then told Edward he wasn't going too far to school. He was going into law enforcement, and his dad had lost his job, so that hadn't given him much choice in school. Tyler knew he would probably finish up in community college unless he could get funding for a 4-year university.

No one wanted to hurt Edward's feelings as he had been through so much, but they didn't see the point of putting a tribute to Izzy in the yearbook. But Edward was adamant they owed her that much as most of the yearbook group had caused her to be kidnapped. They let the teacher sort it out.

Izzy

It had been almost a year since Izzy had come home with Charlie. Things had gotten more manageable for her, mainly since she got her first job. Izzy has been working hard as always, keeping up with her schoolwork to managing to advance to the next grade before other people in the year group. She has just been working as hard, keeping up orders for her paintings. She was offered more money by people so their paintings would become a priority. The public was also asking for bigger and more complex subjects. Marcus was now acting as her agent. Thank goodness his wife was looking after her finances. She was still painting under the name of Phoenix. An art program ran a weekly feature on up-and-coming artists during their program. The week they ran the section on Phoenix, most of the panel was convinced that Phoenix was a male in his mid-to-late 20s. Seth and Izzy sat watching the program, laughing at the discussion. Leah had never been told about Izzy's alter ego; it was a well-known fact that she couldn't keep a secret.

Charlie was pleased that they hadn't heard from the commune again. They had never gotten a call requesting a picture. Izzy was so busy with her life now that she never mentioned them. Charlie was fine with that. He just loved having her back, and the first time she laughed was like listening to it for the first time.

Izzy spoke to Helen about how she felt about what Sparrow had done to her during one of her sessions. She had a screaming session and threw plates at the wall; a therapy Helen used to help with Izzy's frustrations.

It had never sat well with Nicholas and June that they had to shelve the whole commune situation. They had seen Izzy slowly getting some of her life back. But they knew that until most of the people out there were caught, mainly the jailor being found, Izzy would never be safe. They could only think about doing one thing. First, to see if she knew where those twenty-four kids were, and second, to get her to draw these scum and get them on the television show America's Most Wanted and see if anyone could find them. Izzy deserved to live her life. Next would be to convince Helen, her therapist, that they needed her help without setting her back on the progress she had made so far.

Edward

Edward came in from the yearbook meeting. He knew no one would be home, so he started dinner. He wanted to be in the good graces of his parents when he spoke to them about school.

"Is that meatloaf I smell, Carlisle?" Esme shouted through the house.

"Yes, it is mom, but dad isn't home, yet. I thought I would get a jump on dinner," Edward explained.

"Darling, that's so nice of you. How long have you been home? Didn't you have a yearbook meeting?" Esme asked.

"Yes, we have sent the yearbook to the principal to finalize it, and then it will go to the publisher," Edward offered.

"How was work for you?" Edward asked.

"Really busy. I have plenty of work for Alice to join the practice. Like today I had emergency surgery, and my patients had to wait or make another appointment because I'm on my own. By the time I came out, I had furious pet owners who insisted on waiting," Esme sighed.

"It's because our small town is growing. I can't believe that we have two new families that have moved here," Edward stated.

"It's strange considering they have no family here," Esme said as she slipped up onto the bar stool, watching as Edward peeled a potato.

"I want to have a weekend when I'm not on call. I know the students take a couple of Saturdays, but the thought of being able to have Bella and baby Casey, and giving Emmett and Rose a break for the night would make me happy. I've missed the times when I couldn't be there for you kids. I want to be there for my grandchildren," Esme offered.

"Mom, if you give Emmett and Rose a night off, you will be a grandma again," Edward chuckled.

"That's another reason I was hoping Jasper and Alice would come home. They called last night to tell your dad and I they are having a baby," Esme beamed.

"That's great. How much longer has Jazz got until he's qualified?" Edward asked.

"Less than four months. He has to have so much surgical time as well as performing a variety of surgeries to qualify," Esme said.

"He will be home soon, I'm sure. You won't even miss me," Edward chuckles.

"Of course, we will miss you," Esme said.

"Who will miss who? Is that meatloaf you made tonight? It's been a long time since we've had that. Just what I need after the day I've had," Carlisle said as he walked into the kitchen.

"Hi, sweetheart. First, Edward made dinner for us. He doesn't have any homework, so he thought he would treat us," Esme winked, then said. "We were talking about missing Edward when he goes to school."

"Of course, we will miss you, son. Why would you think we wouldn't? You have more than proved yourself to us," Carlisle confirmed.

"I wanted to talk to you both about going to school. I want to go into teaching. I have always wanted to teach computer science. But unless it's software development or coding, there isn't much to teach nowadays. I don't think anyone will be happy if I taught them how to hack. I'm going to have to rethink it," Edward offered.

"Why don't you speak to Emmett and then decide? Are you thinking of staying in Washington or going out of state?" Carlisle asked.

"I was thinking of staying in Washington. I will not have enough money to stay on campus. If I'm a resident in Seattle, I'm allowed to attend the university and live off campus the first year when normally students must stay on campus," Edward said.

"Are you okay with not having the full experience of university, Edward?" Esme asked.

"Mom, the mistakes I've made are enough for anyone. Apparently, in England, people who can't afford to stay on campus stay at a travel inn for the days they have lessons. The rest of the time, they go home. That way, they can keep their weekend jobs and afford their tuition. I've been looking into loans and any funding available," Edward offered.

"I'm impressed you have looked at options. Speak to Emmett, and then we will look at options. We still have a couple of months until applications must be in," Carlisle replied.

"Let's have dinner," Esme chirped.

That seems to be the end of the conversation for now.

Izzy

"Hi, Thumbelina; why do you always stay out here while you knit or draw?" Seth asked.

"I like the quiet. I'm just not used to the loud music and that television always on. Even when no one is watching it. I can't stand the noise," Izzy replied.

"We all went to the cinema. I know you haven't ever been before, but why don't you come with us? Your dad was with us? Have you ever been to the cinema? Are you nervous because you don't know what to expect?" Seth continued asking questions not giving her a chance to answer him.

"I have been to the cinema once with Alice and Jane. We saw a cartoon called Cars; Well, I think that's what it was called," Izzy huffed. "If you must know, it's the dark that frightens me. I thought you would have known that with me keeping a light on in my room. Also, they won't let Bobby go in."

"I thought it was because you're scared. You know of those people?" Seth asked.

"Well, yes and no. Yes, I'm terrified of them finding me, especially anyone from the foundling compound or the catchers. No, it's hard to explain. It's like seeing manikins walking around. No one speaks to each other. They are like zombies," Izzy sighed. "There were about 30 of us in the foundling compound and fourteen people in the commune in New York, so I'm not used to crowds even after all this time."

"Why don't you go to work with my mom? You can look at the pictures of people they have sent to prison. You might be hiding from someone who is no longer a threat," Seth offered.

"I'll think about it," Izzy replied as she continued humming a song Seth had never heard before.

~T&I~

"Sue, Seth said that you have pictures of people who are from that place. In the office where you work. He said the people I'm scared of might already be in prison. Could I look at the pictures, and see?" Izzy asked.

"Izzy, are you sure? I don't want to push you, but that would help. We found some photographs of children in a filing cabinet in one of the offices. We don't know who they are. Would you look at them and see if they look familiar," Sue replied.

"Yes, but I want Helen and Bobby to come with me. Just in case I need them," Izzy replied.

Sue rushed to the phone to call someone. This could not come at a better time. America's Most Wanted was hoping to do a program about the people we were looking for.

"Are you sure about this, Izzy? It might start your nightmares again," Charlie challenged.

"I'll be fine. Daddy, they are winning while I stay in hiding only going between here and the store," Izzy replied.

"Izzy, could you come to the office now and see if you can identify anyone and show us some of the key people that are missing? Then, if we don't have a picture of them, maybe you'll be able to draw them?" Sue asked excitedly.

"As long as Daddy, Bobbie, and Helen are there, I can," Izzy nervously replied.

Izzy knew if she was ever going to be able to get over this, she had to stand up to her fears; the biggest fear was of the jailer.

~T&I~

"Hi, Izzy; it's good of you to come and help with this," Nick said.

"Hi," Izzy replied as she kept her hand in Bobbie's fur.

"Come this way, Izzy. We want to see if you can identify any children from some pictures we have. We have a board we have put together of people who have gone to jail. Along with the job, we were told they did. But we have also pictures of adults we don't know, who they are or if they had a job," June said. "Sue tells me you are great at drawing. Maybe if there isn't a picture, you could sketch them for us. We need to know if these kids were taken like you or if they were born into the cult."

"Okay, I can do that," Izzy whispered.

Everyone knew Izzy was finding this challenging and admired her for making this move. They had wished she would have done it before now. The last case had just been heard in court, and the man was given three life sentences.

"Okay, Izzy, these are pictures of twenty-four children. We don't know who they are or if they were in the foundling compound; we found them in a cabinet in one of the offices at the compound," Nick asked as he handed her a pile of pictures.

Izzy looked at the pictures a few times. She stood up, and walked towards a table, she spread them out into different sections on the table.

"These four were in the compound with me. This is Phoenix. He didn't know who his parents were, and he went missing about six months before I left. This girl is called Looping. She had been beaten badly as a baby. She was like Willow; only she still had to wear diapers. It was her parents who did that to her. They were in the inner circle. These two are twins. This is a star child, and that is Ziggy. They were about my age. I think I had been there about six months when they came. They stayed by themselves. They never got into trouble. Phoenix told us not to tell them anything," Izzy robotically said. "This is Meadow and Buzz's son Leaf. He wasn't with us. Meadow and Buzz are the people who took me. I don't recognize any of the other children."

"That's great, Izzy. You have done well. Do you want to take a brief break and get some fresh air?" Helen asked as she took Izzy's hand.

"I'll come with you," Charlie said.

"No, daddy, I'm just going to the restroom. You stay here, so I know where you will be if I need you," Izzy replied.

Charlie watched hopelessly as Izzy walked out of the door.

"Sue, do you think this is a good idea? It may be too much for her," Charlie whispered.

"Charlie, she is doing great. I know her well enough to know that she will stop when she can't cope. Even if she does nothing else, we have the names of four kids. We should be able to connect them with their parents. We will have to see if we have everyone in the right jobs, especially if they are in jail. If we haven't got a picture of anyone, she knows who had a hand in hurting people. We are hoping she will draw them from us. They're going to be featured on a special edition of America Most Wanted," Sue divulged.

"As long as Izzy isn't named or made to appear on the show. But, I'll leave with her and take her away even to another country, if need be," Charlie growled.

"Daddy, I'm going to be fine. But you are right. I'm not going on any television show. If I'm going to be named, I'm not continuing this either," Izzy said.

"No, you've misunderstood. We were hoping you could look at the board to see where we have been told the key people are placed. All these people are now in jail. Some of them are on death row. What we want to know is if we have gotten everyone who is a danger to anyone. We believe that once the kids know they are no longer in danger, they might come out of hiding. You're right, Izzy. You are eighteen years old and have your whole life in front of you. You can't stay hidden for the next sixty years," Nick reassured.

"Are you ready to look at the board and see if we have everything correct in the way we have been told? There is also a pile of pictures of people that we don't know who they are. Could you look through them?" June asked.

Izzy took hold of Charlie's hand and went into the next room. Bobby came and sat next to her. Her hand automatically went into his fur. She stood in front of the wall that had caused her to have nightmares. She saw the Wolf at the top with pictures dotted over the board. They seemed to be in groups that made no sense to her. She saw people she recognized, but not from what their job said.

"You have all this wrong. We saw it differently than this. This isn't Apollo his name is I think Falcon. Apollo wasn't in charge of security. Apollo was with the jailer. He was the overseer. He was the one who either punished us or told the others too. He also watched over the chasers," Izzy began.

"Okay. Who is this person?" Nick asked.

"I don't know. I've never seen him before," Izzy replied.

"We were told he hit and murdered the kids in the foundling compound. He is in prison serving twenty-five years," June groaned.

"Okay, is there anyone else on here that you know is wrong?" Nick asked.

"We saw little of anyone who wasn't in our small section of the community. But this person is the one who deals with the pig farm. They said that he took people there for the pigs to eat," Izzy said as she picked up a picture. "There was another section they took the girls to when they reached about fifteen years old. I think they raised animals because they were called the breeders."

"Did you see who was in charge of those people?" Nick asked.

"This man," Izzy said as she picked up another picture. "He must live there because I only saw him when he went to work away from the compound. He wore a nice suit and drove a nice car. They said he was a broker. I don't know what they did, but it had something to do with the baby animals they raised there," Izzy divulged, passing the picture to Nick. "These two women worked in an office because they would go to work with him sometimes. But he must work from the compound, as he didn't go into the office that much."

She passed two more pictures of women to Nick, who was writing things down.

"That's brilliant. Can you tell us anything else about any of these people? June asked.

"These two are the ones who took me Buzz and Meadow," Izzy said passing June two more pictures.

"You're doing great is there anyone else you know?" Nick asked.

"Besides Sparrow and Saffron, these three people are catchers," Izzy said as she pulled three pictures from the table of two men and a woman. "The catchers were the ones who took us back if we managed to run. They were the ones who broke our ankles and feet."

"This is important. Do you see a picture of the jailer? Or the man you know as Apollo, the overseer, is there a picture of anyone else who runs the foundling compound?" Nick asked.

"That's Apollo and this is Orion he helped the overseer," Izzy added pushing two more pictures toward Nick.

"And this is the jailer," Izzy said as she gasped for breath. It was clear she was having a panic attack.

"I think she's had enough now. She has told you more than you knew before. It would help if you didn't give that kid Sparrow protection. It seems he caused my girl so many of her problems," Charlie growled.

"Would you like to come and chat in my office, or should I come to your studio?" Helen asked.

"Could you come over to the studio before Seth and Leah come home?" Izzy asked as she was still gasping for breath.

"Of, course I can. Then we can call my cousin and see if he can fix those feet of yours. What will your first shoes be have you got any thoughts," Helen asked as they got into her car.

"Yes, I'll buy a pair of red doc martins," Izzy replied as she cuddled up to Bobbie, as Helen drove her home.
