August 2013, New York University

Sam Evans walked across the Quad with his new roommate, Noah Puckerman, but the man asked to be called Puck. On paper, they were definitely a roommate match. Both were over six feet tall, with dirty blonde hair and a clean-shaven face.

Both men played football in high school and were named Prom King at their respected Proms. But that was where their similarities lie.

Puck was a well-known ladies' man, his charm and charisma effortlessly winning over women. Sam, on the other hand, was a man of singular devotion. His heart belonged to Penny, his high school sweetheart and the head cheerleader who had also been crowned Prom Queen. Their love was a quiet, small, but steady flame that endured despite the distance.

Sam could admit he was upset, as she was supposed to Join him in NYC, but at the last minute, she decided to live abroad for a year. But they had Skype, emails, and phone calls.

As they made it to Freshman Orientation, Puck pulled Sam to the back of the class. He told Sam that way, they could check out all the "Talent" that came in. But he wasn't thinking about other women, not when he had Penny.

That was until Mercedes Jones walked into the room. All eyes, and he did mean all eyes were in her, as he watched the Professor check out her ass when she passed him.

While others, including him, stuck with jeans and a T-shirt, Mercedes wore a lavender sundress with white wedges. Her hair fell over her shoulders in passion twists, and the nose stud sparkled in the light of the lecture hall. She and her blonde friend took a seat, giggling about something, and her laugh damn near took him out.

"Now, that is why you come to college," Puck said, licking his lips. "Those thighs are begging to rest on my shoulders."

Sam rolled his eyes as he tried to pay attention, but his eyes moved back to her. Shaking off those feelings, he needed to regroup. He heard that there was a dorm room party that night, and he was glad to go and have fun.

He and Puck shared one-half of their dorm and a bathroom. Then you came out to the common room, where there was a living area, study area, kitchen, and small table to eat. Across the hall were their roommates, Blaine and Hunter.

From what Sam could tell, Blaine was a theater major, and Hunter was a Business major. Across the hall lived Mike and Sebastian. While Mike was a dance major, Sebastian was PreLaw, like Sam.

They hadn't had a chance to meet Mike and Sebastian's roommates, but the moment Puck heard they were female, he was determined to make one or both his.

Looking in the mirror, Sam wore a Hunter Green Henley Tee with dark-wash blue jeans. Looking to Puck, who went with all black, he shook his head. The man was currently doing push-ups while thrusting on the ground.

"What the hell are you doing?" Sam asked, shaking his head.

"Hey, the key to lasting a long time is controlling your thrusts, I learned this from my pops, and he would know the man had a wife, a girlfriend, and three side chicks."

"And that is who you are modeling yourself after? A man like that? Who screws around on your mom?"

"Step-mom and she's hot but not faithful either; they have an open marriage or some shit like that," Puck said, standing as he ran his hand through his hair.

"Dude, that's ridiculous; when I get married, that's it for me, I don't like to share. And if she's mine, she will be more than enough."

"That is the gayest shit I have ever heard. And I had a conversation with that guy Kurt down the hall."

Sam shoved him. "If we are gonna hang out, you can't say stuff like that."

Nodding Puck held up his hands. "Sorry."

As they left their dorm, Puck threw his hands in the air and walked over to Mike and Sebatians. As Sam walked into the room, he bumped into the woman from freshman orientation, who was wearing nothing but a towel.

She gripped her towel tighter and stepped back, balancing herself. "Walk much?"

"I'm uh- I mean I- I just."

She rolled her eyes and looked at him, and Puck stared at her. Snapping her fingers, she caught their attention. "Yo! Take a picture; it'll last longer. My eyes are up here!"

Puck smirked, moving Sam aside. "Hey, I-"

She put her free hand up. "No." Walking away, she smiled as Mike walked over to them. "Thanks for letting me use your shower; Quinn is taking forever."

"No problem, Merce."

Sam and Puck watched her walk away, practically drooling, and Mike shook his head. "Don't even think about it; she is not your type."

Puck laughed. "Every woman is my type. Two minutes with me, and I will have her screaming a different tune."

"I have known Mercedes since we were three. She will eat you alive." Mike laughed.

"Why are these two just standing in our doorway like statues?" Sebastian asked, trying to walk into the room.

"They saw Merce in a towel." Mike laughed.

Sebastian patted them on the back before pushing them further into their dorm so he could get inside. "Yeah, she's smart, beautiful, and not your type."

"That's what I said." Mike laughed.

Sam shoved his hands into his pockets. "Yeah, well, she doesn't have to worry about me, I am not interested in her; I got a girl. She's in Europe right now."

Mike and Sebastian looked at Sam and burst out laughing. "Your girlfriend is in Europe? Uh-huh, and I have a girl in Canada." Mike chuckled.

"Whatever! Are we going or not?" Sam said, rolling his eyes.

"Yeah, let me grab the girls," Sebastian said.

A few minutes later, as Sam showed Mike pictures of him and Penny, Sebastian walked out of the girl's dorm, followed by the two women.

Sam blinked back a few times, taking them in as Sebastian smiled. "Merce, Quinn, that's Puck and Sam; they live across the hall. Guys, that's Quinn, and this is Mercedes.

Sam stood but was unable to speak. While Quinn wore a red dress that clung to her surprisingly nice behind and gave her breasts the illusion of being bigger than they were, Mercedes wore a red and gold halter top, Cheongsam.

Her garment fit her like a glove, and he couldn't take his eyes off her. And neither could any of the men.

Mercedes looked at Mike and frowned. "Is something wrong? Is the dress bad? Your mom helped me with the measurements so I could sew it."

Mike shook his head. "No, it looks perfect; my mom will be very proud. You two look very beautiful."

Mercedes offered the men a smile.

Sam watched as Puck walked over to them and wrapped his arms around them both. "I know we have this mixer thing tonight, but how about you two meet me back in my room? I will show you a really good time."

Mercedes gave him a wide grin. "Counter offer, and I think you will like this; how about you get your grubby little paws off of us, or I will cut off your widdle friend."

Puck immediately stepped back as Quinn giggled. "Not his widdle friend Merce! How will he give it to all the ladies?" She teased.

"I personally think we would be doing all the women here a great service. Come on guys, we gotta get downstairs." Mercedes said, laughing as she walked away.

Watching her link arms with Quinn and walk out of the dorm, Sam looked over at Puck, who used his hands to cover himself.

"Not one word, Evans. Those girls are crazy. I am afraid for my life. Can I sue for emotional distress?"

Sam shrugged. "You could, but then I would advise them to counter-sue for sexual harassment."

Though there was a party inside, Sam had gone outside onto the balcony to return Penny's call. But the three times he called her back in the last ten minutes, he was met with her voicemail.

Shoving his phone in his pocket, annoyed, Sam turned to go back inside and crashed into Mercedes.

Realizing that she lost her balance this time, he pulled her close, trying to help her. With her arms wrapped around his neck, he held her with a goofy smile as he did. "I'm sorry."

She smiled at him, shaking her head. "No, it's my fault. I wanted to get some air; I didn't know anyone was out here.

"Oh, yeah, I was calling, um, back a missed call."

She nodded. "Can you…"

"Yes?" He asked, staring into her eyes.

"Um, can you let me go?"

Sam's eyes widened as he let her go, stepping back. "I am so sorry."

"No, don't worry about it; at least you didn't try to cop a feel; I have been avoiding your roommate all night as he tried to touch my ass."

Sam's eyes darted down to her ass instantly, and she laughed.

"Ah, so you are another ass man, huh?" She teased.

"I am an everything man," Sam said, swallowing as he looked her up and down... "I just mean, I, um, look for the—I have a girlfriend."

Mercedes smiled a genuine smile. "I know what you meant, and she's a lucky girl."

His phone rang, and he pulled it out, seeing Penny calling him.

"I will let you talk to your girlfriend; see you around, Sam."

His phone continued to ring as he watched her leave, praying he would get to see her again.

It had been two months since Sam started at NYU, and in truth, Sam spent more time with Mercedes and his friends than talking to Penny, as they were in an argument—or rather, another one. Sam wanted her to come back to the States for the holidays, but she didn't want to leave.

Throwing his phone on the bed, he rubbed his eyes as someone knocked on the dorm room door. Pulling a shirt over his basketball shorts, he walked towards the door and was pleasantly surprised to see Mercedes standing there.

As hard as he tried, he couldn't stop his eyes from roaming over her body. She wore a simple royal blue romper that stopped right at her thighs, and as always, her curves were on full display. "Merce, hi!"

"Sam, Hey! I am so glad you are home. Can I stay here for a bit? The main common room is super crowded, and with Sebastian and Hunter in Bas's room and Mike and Quinn in mine, I need a quiet place to work…unless Puck is here."

Sam laughed. "Puck has a class, so you will be safe for a little while."

Mercedes exhaled, walking inside. "Thank you, I promise—I promise you won't even know I am here," she said, shifting her bag.

Walking in, she was surprised to see the difference in the room, even though the layout was the same as hers. As she sat on the sofa in their common room, Sam sat next to her.

"I don't mind that you are here," Sam said, smiling. He caught her smile and felt butterflies; it was something her smile always did. "So, what are you working on? Math? English?"

"Nope, my design for class." She said, holding her drawing up for Sam to see. "It's for one of my classes."

Sam looked at the two-piece cow print outfit.

"We were tasked with creating an outfit in animal print, but not the regular Cheetah or zebra print. They wanted an original idea. Once I get the outfit right, I can start creating it for real."

"Why cow print?" Sam Questioned.

Mercedes smiled. "I was watching Selena and got inspired. She's a singer from the 90s who deserved better."

"My mom used to listen to her, and didn't they make a Netflix series about her?"

Mercedes nodded. "Yeah, but there was also a movie before that."

"You have a good eye; you made that outfit at orientation, right?"

Mercedes smiled, nodding. "Mike's mom helped me with the design, and she even showed it to some of her friends, and they put orders in."

Sam stared at her in awe; this woman was impressive. He handed her book back to her, tilting his head to the side. "So your major is fashion?"

Mercedes nodded. "Fashion Design. And I am going to take some finance classes so I can know the business side of it as well."

"Very cool," Sam said, smiling.

"So what is yours? Or have you not decided?"

"I am prelaw, like Sebastian."

Mercedes nodded. "Why Law?"

"Well, my father and grandfather have their own law firm back in Ohio, and I wanted to join the family business…not for them but for me."

"Wait…you are from Ohio?" Mercedes asked.

Sam nodded. "What about you?"

"I am from Ohio, too."

Sam laughed. "That's crazy. What part?"

"Findlay, Oh, where did you live?"

Sam pulled out his phone and smiled. "Lima, I can't believe we lived like twenty minutes away from each other."

Mercedes beamed, looking at him. "What? Really? I guess it really is a small world."

Sam felt his phone vibrate and sighed. "Puck is on his way home. Now I know you still have work to do; we can go to my room."

"Won't Puck come in there?"

Sam smiled as he grabbed her things. "I'll just put a sock on the door. And text him to stay out. He's an ass sometimes, but he respects the whole sock-on-the-door thing.i think."

Standing, she followed him taking in the room, she could tell whose side was whose just by looking. While Sam's side was neat, with a made bed and photos of his family and friends, Puck's side was messier, with pictures of half-naked women on his walls.

Sam placed a sock on the door and moved to sit at his desk while she got comfortable on his bed, and somehow, he knew that's where he wanted to keep her.

As she sat back and began to draw, Sam couldn't keep his eyes off of her, the way she bit her perfect bottom lip as she tried to concentrate. The soft sounds she made when she made a mistake. God, she was perfect in every way.

"Why are you staring at me?"

Sam's eyes widened as he realized that she was talking to him. "Sorry, I just?"

"You just what?" She asked with a smirk, leading him to believe that she knew exactly what he was thinking.

"You look cute, focusing on your work."

Blushing, she looked back down at her work. "Guys like you..." She didn't finish; she just shook her head.

Sam raised an eyebrow as he moved over to her. "Guys like me, what?"

"Nah-uh, we are not doing that."

"Doing what?" he asked, removing her sketchbook from her hand. "You said something, and you are going to tell me; it's only right."

"What are you doing, Evans?" Mercedes asked as he boxed her into the corner of his twin bed.

"Guys like me are what?" He asked with a devilish grin on his face. "You have five seconds to tell me, or you will feel my wrath."

"Is that so? You can't break me; these lips are sealed." She teased, curious to see what it was going to do.

"I bet I can get those lips to tell me all its secrets," Sam said as he hovered over her.

She stared at him momentarily before his fingers slipped to her side and began to tickle her.

Mercedes laughed, trying to pull away from him, but she couldn't, and soon he was between her thighs while she lay on her back, staring down at her as they both panted.

As Sam stared at her, he knew it would be so easy to just kiss her, and she must have felt it, too, with the way she licked her lips.

Sam was about to say, 'fuck it,' but the moment Sam leaned down to kiss her, she turned her head, and he was nose deep into her neck.

That just made things worse because she smelled amazing.

"Sam." She said breathlessly.

Feeling guilty, Sam tried to move, but she held him close.

"Wait…I can't… I can't look at you before I say this, or I will lose my nerve."

Sam nodded, snuggling closer to her.

"I like you, Sam; I think you are funny, smart, a gentleman…and man, are you sexy? I would love nothing more than to kiss you. But I am not a cheater. I believe that relationships that start like that… never work out. Because kissing you once, I know that I would never want to stop."

Sam could only nod because, in truth, he felt the same way. "I'm sorry, Mercedes. You deserve better than this."

"So does she," Mercedes said, finally letting him go.

As Sam moved off of her, Puck burst through the door.

"Well now, I didn't think you had it in you, Evans, but excellent choice in booty."

Sam shoved him, and Mercedes rolled her eyes. "We were just playing around, and you are a pervert. Sam, I will see you around."

Sam watched as Mercedes left the room. He looked over to Puck. "Whatever happened to respecting the sock?"

Puck shrugged. "I knew you weren't doing anything. But tell me, did you grab that ass?"

Sam huffed, grabbing his phone. He wasn't a cheater but knew he wanted to spend more time with Mercedes. The moment he met her, he knew why his father would sing "My Girl" to his mom.

Because Mercedes was for sure Sunshine, and she warmed him, she put a smile on his face and made him want to be better.

Dailing Penny, he waited for her to answer. They had been heading for a breakup ever since the summer, but he just couldn't pull the trigger, at least not until now.

"Hey Sam, I can't talk long. Gio and I are about to go sightseeing."

"Gio?" Sam asked.

"Oh yeah, he's a..friend." She said unconvincingly.

"You know what? You and Gio have a good time. In fact, I won't keep you."

"Sammy, don't be like that…I did kiss him once.."

Four times. Sam heard Penny giggle in the background as she shushed him.

"But you know, and he knows my heart belongs to you."

"Oh, he gets your body, but I get your heart. Well, no, you can keep it. We are done."

And with that, he hung up. Sam was a little upset that she didn't call him back but more upset at how stupid he was. While part of him wanted to tell Mercedes what happened, he knew he needed to get his feelings in line before he did that.

So he waited a week; that's how long his reserve was.

Once that week was over he walked to her dorm room, as Mike let him in. Headed to her door and knocked on it.

Mercedes opened the door, wearing an oversized Kobe Bryant Jersey and short shorts.

"Sam? Are you ok?"

Smiling, Sam pulled her to him. "Never better." And with that, he kissed her with all the passion that had been swirling around him since he met her.

Pulling back, she searched his eyes. "Penny?"

"We broke up last week. I wanted to give myself a week to see what my feelings are."

"And what are your feelings?"

Moving her into her dorm room, he shut the door. "My feelings are that I want to be yours, and I want you to be mine. So go on a date with me."
