PRESENT
"Then she walked out of my life, changed her number, and moved out of Ohio. Or that's what her dad told me. I keep going back over that night, wondering why I was so quick to believe that Mercedes would betray me?"
Sam hadn't realized that he was tearing at the strands of his ripped jeans as he relived that day, nor did he notice that Jane was pressed against him, rubbing his back.
Sam turned to look at her and realized he was a breath away from fusing his lips to hers. It was clear that she wanted him, that she was waiting for him to say the word, and that he could take her in any way he wanted.
But he didn't want her. "Excuse me, you are really close."
"Sorry, you were pretty deep in the memory; I needed to bring you back," Jane said, moving to sit back across from Sam. He noticed that her skirt was hitched up higher than it was before, and he could smell her arousal. But the scent did nothing for him; she had nothing on Mercedes.
"It seems like you learned the truth and got the closure you needed."
"If I got closure, why is it that she is still the last woman I have fucked. I still remember how she tasted…how she felt. I can't get it up for anyone else."
Sam watched her eyes go to the bulge in his jeans and didn't miss the way she licked her lips.
"It seems you have no problem getting it up for me." She said, practically jumping out of her clothes.
"It's not for you," Sam said bluntly. "This is what I call a Mercedes boner. It rises and falls just for her. The moment you come near it, it deflates because no woman is her or can do what she does."
"I can try."
Sam sighed; this was a waste of time. "I am going to go, Doc; thanks for nothing."
"No!" She said as he stood. "I apologize; I lost my head for a moment. Look, Sam, it's clear you are still in love with her. You had sex with her over two years ago and are still lusting after her. If you want to get over this, you need to talk to her."
"I told you I tried to talk to her."
"Sam, you screwed her, you didn't try. Even now you still call her a cheater when she clearly explained that she wasn't lying. Did you even confront Penny?"
Sam looked away from her. "I didn't see the point."
Jane laughed. "Sam, you are sexy as hell but dumb as shit. And I am sorry, but you are. You need to really ask yourself why you still believe Penny."
"It's not that… I lost Mercedes, Puck, and our friends. The only person I have left in my corner is Penny."
"And you don't want to reach out to Mercedes because she may still reject you? First, you need to confront Penny. And then Sam, you either need to let go of Mercedes or go to her. You can't spend the rest of your life in limbo."
Jane was a horny ass doctor, but she was making sense to him. Sam had to admit he was afraid to reach out, even when his parents told him he should. She rejected him once.
As his phone rang, he sighed. Seeing that the number was not saved in his phone, he wondered if it was Stevie. He said he was getting a new number, though he didn't recognize the area code.
"Excuse me." He said to Jane, answering his phone.
"Hello."
"Hi!" Came the cutest voice he had ever heard.
Confused, Sam looked at the number and then put the phone back to his ear, "Hello?"
"Hi! Hi! Hewoooooooooooo. Ma! Ma! Hiii!"
Sam was about to hang up, but then he froze, hearing the voice he would recognize from anywhere.
"Babygirl, who are you calling? Are you trying to call Pawpaw back? He said he'd call you later, sweetpea. Give me the ph-uuuuuck."
"I thought you weren't cursing around baby girl Merce. What's wrong? Who did she call?"
"San…she called Sam."
Click.
Sam stared at the phone, confused, playing with his mind. He didn't even hear Jane calling his name; his eyes were glued to his phone.
Sam stood walking to the door, not concerned with Jane or her assistant. He hurried to his car as he dialed the number back but it went straight to voicemail.
Sam reached his car as he redialed it, and sent him to voicemail again. Sam slammed his hands against the steering wheel, growing frustrated. Why was there a child on Mercedes' phone? Could it be Bailey?
She would be older, and Sam was pretty sure it wouldn't sound like that.
He heard her say "San," so it could be Santana's child.
But then, why would Mercedes be talking to the child? And calling her baby girl?
This was when he needed a therapist who wanted to help him, not sleep with him.
Sam ran his hands through his hair, wondering if he should call back before realizing he should call his parents. Mercedes may hate him, but his parents would know if she had a child. And he would find out if she had a child out of wedlock or if she was married.
As he dialed his mother's number, though she answered on the third ring, it felt like forever."
"Hey Sammy, how was therapy?"
"My therapist tried to sleep with me, same day, the same problem. What is going on with Mercedes?"
"Um, what? Your therapist did what?"
"Mom, she's a horny doctor, whatever, what is going on with Mercedes?"
"Umm...What's going on with her?"
"Mom…"
Mary stayed silent.
Sam shook his head as if she could see him. "Mom, a little girl called me, and I know she's with Mercedes; just tell me that she is watching Santana's child, and I will let you be on your way."
"Sam, you really should call Mercedes."
"Why? Why is it so important that I call her? Because I can do the math…and if you are telling me that I have a daughter and I haven't gotten to meet her because of my stupidity…"
"Sam, your father and I have told you to talk to Mercedes since the moment you left."
"I know...I couldn't...Mom, am I dad?"
Mary was quiet for a moment. "I am going to send you a text; what you do with it is up to you. As I said, we have been trying to get you to call her for the last year and a half, and you haven't. Maybe this time, you will heed my advice. "
With that, Mary hung up, and a few minutes later, an address in Chicago popped up.
Sam sighed, running his hand through his hair before quickly booking a flight for Chicago that left in five hours and headed home to pack.
As Sam threw a few outfits in his bag, he heard his door open and shut, and then Penny walked into his bedroom with a shit-eating grin on her face.
"Guess what? Wait, no. I am just going to tell you that I got us reservations at Le' Pierre tonight! And I bought a new dress for the occasion." She said, pulling off her coat and revealing a short, strapless black dress.
Sam ignored her, going to his dresser and pulling out several pairs of socks.
"Sam, why are you packing? You need to get dressed so you can take me out on town! I need to be shown off!"
Sam stopped what he was doing and turned towards her; it was then he took her in. She was dressed as if they were going on a date, and Sam realized that lately, she had been acting as if they were together.
"Penny, who filed the divorce papers that Mercedes signed?"
Penny raised an eyebrow. "What? Mercedes? Sam, why are you worried about her?"
"Answer the question. I know I can find out, but I just wanted to hear it from you."
"I mean, I did. I knew it was where you were headed."
"What do you mean where we were headed?"
"Sam, you two just weren't right for each other, and as your friend, it was up to me to help you."
"If I found out Mercedes cheated the night before she signed, how did she get the papers? They take one to two weeks to prepare."
"What does it matter? She had your best friend's baby. You are rid of her."
Sam nodded. "No, she didn't. She and Puck never slept together."
"What? Sam, you need to stop seeing that therapist; she is putting crazy stuff in your head."
Sam slammed his carry-on bag shut and glared at her. "I don't know why I believed you. Mercedes never did anything to hurt me. She'd hurt herself before she'd hurt me, and yet I listened to you and that lie you told. Then, when she left, it was easier to believe the lie than the truth that I pushed away the woman I loved for you."
"It's because you truly loved me, Sam," Penny said, pulling him to her.
Sam pushed her away. "Don't you ever touch me again? Mercedes tried to warn me that you were still after me and I vouched for you, and then you do this? You cost me my best friend and my wife!"
"I was supposed to be your wife! We were supposed to get married, and you left me for her!"
Sam laughed. "No, you were having a great time in Europe, and I walked away. Mercedes just made the breakup with you better. My whole life has been screwed up because of you, and now, I can only hope and pray she can forgive me."
Grabbing his bag, he walked out of the room, and Penny followed on his heels.
"This is supposed to be our fresh start! Sam, please!"
Sam sighed heavily before he walked over to her. Reaching her hand, he took her key ring and removed his key. Then he grabbed her by the arm and pushed her out the door.
"Do not call me, text me, or bother me ever again." With that, Sam slammed the door. She knocked and banged, but Sam ignored it as he finished packing.
Looking at his phone, he took a chance and redialed the number. It began to ring, and he felt hopeful.
"Hello." Came in a whisper and he immediately knew it was Santana.
"Why are you whispering?" Sam asked, whispering like he was there with her.
"Sorry, Merce is in the shower, and I don't want her to hear me."
"Why?"
Santana was quiet for a moment. "If you are calling to break her heart for the third time, I will cut you all the way from here."
"Pretty sure she broke my heart two years ago." Sam countered.
"So that's why you never replied to her letter?"
Sam froze. "Letter?"
"Dude, she wrote to you like three times. Every time she tried to call you, she'd lose her nerve, so she wrote to you, but you never replied, so she figured you didn't want to see them."
"I swear to you I never got any letters! Wait…them?"
"Fuck! I gotta go."
"Wait! Look, I am catching a flight to Chicago just…make sure she's home in a few hours."
"I'll do my best," Santana said before she hung up.
Sam gathered his things and pulled open the door as Penny stood.
"I couldn't leave you; I am not like Mercedes or Puck; I am here so we can work this out."
Sam stared at her for a moment. "Mercedes said she called me two years ago, and I ignored her calls. Was that you? And I swear if you lie to me, Penny."
Penny looked down at her hands. "I blocked her number from your phone for a few months, and then I unblocked it when I figured enough time had passed."
"And the letters? Did you take them too?"
Penny looked at him with tears in her eyes. "I burned them. She would have tried to get you back and I couldn't have that. I did this for us, Sam. I just wanted you."
Sam took a long, deep breath, deciding right there: "Goodbye, Penny. If I never see you again, it will be too soon."
Sam walked away from her with resolve. He was going to talk to Mercedes, and even if they couldn't work it out, he would not stay in New York, there was officially nothing left for him there.
