Chapter 34

Narrated by Shelly Cope.

Before Helen returned to New York, she went with Izzy to see three different therapists. They ended up selecting a woman named Judith. Like many other therapists, Judith had never treated someone like Izzy. She had only studied it from a book in college. Helen took the time to discuss Izzy's case with her. They set a goal for Izzy to work towards gaining control over her panic attacks. They would also work on letting people touch her without her closing down.

Judith found Izzy's progress in 5 years at home astonishing. The one thing Izzy wasn't going to share with Judith was her pseudonym, the author Izzy Inkpen, or the mysterious Phoenix. Nor her new pseudonym author, Flora Rivers. Who had released her first teenage book "Strange Magic."

Charlie had made an official complaint about Royce and Tyler to the police headquarters in Seattle on behalf of Izzy. Firstly, the Chief of police was shocked to hear that Izzy had made it home and said how he couldn't wait to see his little Izzy again. Then he got pissed and appalled by Royce and Tyler's actions towards her. Also, many of the teenagers from Forks. His friend informed Charlie that Royce would be losing his job. Royce had caused problems at the last two precincts he had worked at. His last chance to be honest in his dealings was at his posting in Forks.

Despite agreeing to help Emmett teach art to the football team, Izzy became more nervous as the days passed. She had asked Seth and Leah about the football team and cheerleaders. They told her that they acted like they ran the school. They didn't care who they bullied and could be outright cruel.

Emmett reassured her that he would be with her. Teddy planned to attend as well.

Izzy was told that four students would be joining them, although they weren't on any of the teams. It was a favor of Chief Mark.

Seth informed her that the teachers had consistently labeled the other four students as problem students. Beau said one was his neighbor in the trailer park. Lee never spoke to many people; he wore eye makeup and was a goth, and everyone said he was a stoner.

AJ spoke to only a few people at school. Leah said he was a little mysterious, rode a motorbike, and was in some biker gang.

The twins ignored everyone. They stayed to themselves. People only knew that their father had been partnered with Royce King when he was killed in the line of duty. Their mother was fired from her job at the bank not long afterward. Despite a lack of proof, Mr. Newton accused her of bank theft shortly after her husband passed away. A few months later, the bank foreclosed on the mortgage, and they lost their home.

However, all four students were required to work in the community, which Royce King oversaw. Royce claimed he had caught all of them causing problems in town and had put himself in charge of community rehabilitation.

Chief Mark was short on staff and couldn't supervise this program, so he asked if they could join the workshop.

Izzy asked Rose if she could review the students' work. Izzy thought it may only be a matter of improving their techniques. However, the sight of their drawings left her dumbfounded. Did someone mix up the pictures of the students and elementary school pupils?Izzy asked Rose.

Izzy's biggest fear was Chelsea turning up; that was a big possibility.

"Teddy, are you certain that they will accept my help? The question is if they will listen. To what I say," Izzy admitted, "I'm nervous."

"Sweetheart, it's going to be fine. They do not need to get anywhere near you. Em will be there, and Riley might even appear. Even the principal is curious about your techniques for solving the problem students. No teacher has held their attention, let alone get them to do any work. Don't forget what I said. Even if you reach one of the kids, you have done a good job," Teddy reassured.

"But Em's depending on me to get the football team's grades up so they can play," Izzy continued.

"Like Rose told you, it's up to them. They will stay and do the necessary work if they want to be on the team. If they're not interested, they will lose their place on the team," Teddy soothed.

Teddy helped Izzy load her car with art and information sheets: brochures, sketchbooks, notebooks, and picture frames.

"What's all this for?" Teddy questioned.

"I think they might have the wrong sketchbooks, so I bought some more just in case. I've made some information sheets to help them. They were supposed to have done some written work. That is what the notebooks are for. These brochures are for a competition that can give them extra credit. The picture frames are the right size for said competition, which might encourage them to enter. Unless you think they won't be able to afford the $10 entry fee. There are a few prizes, including $250," Izzy said as she bit her lip.

"You've put a lot of work into this. They would be crazy if they didn't take advantage of your planned ideas. I'm impressed. You should maybe think about becoming a teacher. It would provide a solid income. You wouldn't have to worry about where your next paycheck would come from if the illustration job dries up," Teddy offered.

As usual, Teddy got in the driver's seat.

"I need to find out what the students want to eat for lunch. Then we can send the order to the diner so they can prepare it, and one of the canteen staff will pick it up," Izzy explained.

"Who supplied the money for this food?"

"Several people have contributed," Izzy replied. "I asked one of the diner staff to help. She said she would supervise the kids during dinner."

"I can't believe we've had to come into school on a Saturday," Sasha, the cheerleader's captain, moaned as she walked into the classroom.

"Don't worry, babe. We won't be here for long," replied Justin, the football team's captain.

"You're aware of what Coach said. We'll be kicked off the squad if we don't improve our grades. I'm relying on a scout to see me and get a scholarship," Luke added.

"I've come because I need to graduate, or I can kiss goodbye to my trust fund. I'm relying on that to pay for school," Conner added.

"You do realize we are missing out on a spa day with C," Tiffany groaned.

"You don't think she will still go when she gets our call and realizes her fiancée is here with little Miss Hippy? Mason is not only a cheat, but she's only a junior," scoffed Holly.

"Good morning. I'm pleased to see so many of you come today. Firstly, I would like to thank you all for coming. This is my dog, Bobby, and I would appreciate it if you didn't fuss with him. He's not used to many people. Is everyone here?" Izzy asked.

There was a mumble of no in the classroom.

"I'm just going to call them," Emmett informed as he left the room.

"Are you a qualified teacher?" A cheerleader shouted out.

"No, I'm not. I'm doing this workshop to help Mr. Cullen. None of you have done any work in this class. I will give you some practical advice and show you how to draw in easy steps. I'm also hoping to show you different forms of art. Which is your practical for most of next year. It's also where most of your grade comes from." Izzy offered. "Besides drawing, I can teach anyone pottery, sculpture, screen printing, and photography."

"If you don't have a certification in teaching, you can't teach. It's against the law. I checked the internet before we came," Justin yelled.

"So, what makes you any good at art and can show us anything?" Anna laughed.

"My job is illustrating children's books. I've illustrated several books. I'm sure you might have seen them," Izzy countered, hoping no one saw her shaking.

"That's bullshit," bellowed Lee, another football player.

"I illustrated the children's book called 'Big Bad Bunny.' Also, the Teddy Bear books. The newly released book by a new author, Flora Rivers, called "Strange Magic" was just released the day after Thanksgiving," Izzy replied.

"This questioning is becoming rude and unnecessary. If you want to play football, you are just going to have to suck it up and be in the mindset to work," Teddy growled out.

"Are you fucking her as well, sir," shouted Cassie.

"Stop being a dick," AJ, a student at the back, yelled.

"Fuck you, stoner. Unless you want me to teach you not to talk to us," snarled Brent.

"Enough," Teddy yelled from the back of the room.

"Although you might think you own the halls in this school and bully everyone. You think you have a god giving right to do so. But in a few months, you hope to attend a university or a college. This country has about twenty thousand high schools, each with a football team and a cheerleading squad. All those people like you will be hoping for a place on the football team on one of six thousand university teams," Izzy began.

"Shut up. You're boring us, and we are not listening to you anymore. You wouldn't know anything about a university campus or a football team. You haven't even finished high school," Justin laughed.

"I graduated in New York," Izzy whispered. She was looking panicked.

"Somebody needs to get someone who knows Beatles songs for when she starts to scream and curls in a ball rocking herself," Tiffany laughed.

"We want our teacher, Chelsea, to teach us, but she's not stupid enough to be here on a Saturday morning," Cassie said.

Teddy could see Izzy was beginning to panic.

"Thank you for calling me girls. I can't believe you had to come here on a Saturday, which is your own time. She can't even teach. No one can stop you from playing football," Chelsea smugly said.

Teddy moved closer to the front to get to Izzy. Chelsea blocked his way.

"I've been patient with you. You promised me that your little fling with Miss jailbait has stopped. You said we would get our relationship back on track. I'm still wearing your ring," Chelsea said, holding her left hand with a diamond ring on.

No one noticed the students from the back had moved to the front of the class.

"Izzy, I want to help get you out of here. My mom has panic attacks. I will take your hand, walk out the door, and go to your car. Okay?" Charlotte, a student from the back, said.

Nodding, Izzy took her hand.

The boys also walked from the back and picked up the boxes.

"Car keys, Mason," AJ, one of the students, demanded.

"I'm not giving you her car keys. You will probably steal it," Teddy replied.

"You either give them to me, or we'll just take them," AJ replied.

"If you cared just a little about her, you would let us get her out of here before she has another breakdown," Pete growled.

Reluctantly, Teddy put his hand in his pocket and gave them Izzy's car keys.

"You're a fucking bastard Mason using her like that. Beau said she is a nice person. Let me help you with her things, Lee," Luke, one of the football players, growled.

"Don't think we haven't forgotten this betrayal, Luke. You better watch your back on the pitch," Justin yelled.

Chelsea walked closer to Teddy, putting her arm around him with a smirk.

Teddy looked shell-shocked, not knowing what happened.

Outside, the students were loading up Izzy's car, putting her in the back with Bobby.

"Where shall we take her so that bastard can't find her?" Charlotte asked.

"Not to her house because that's the first place he will look," AJ replied.

"Not any of the Cullens either," Pete said as he got into the driver's side.

"I've seen her with Mrs. Cheney; we'll take her there, "Lee replied.

"I'll meet you there. I'm not having Mason report us for not turning up," AJ answered as he put on his helmet and got on his bike.

"You're doing so well, Izzy. Concentrate on your breathing. We need to contact Leah or Seth. Can you unlock your phone for us?" Charlotte requested.

"What the hell is going on? Why are you in Izzy's car," Emmett yelled.

"Move it, Pete, before he gets to the car," Lee yelled.

"I've never driven a car this big before," Pete replied as he struggled with turning it on.

"Ask your fucking brother," AJ replied as he tore out of the car park.

Emmett

"Riley, you said you're busy today, but can you come in? Some team members haven't turned up, and the rest of the team has decided to give Izzy a hard time. I've left my stupid brother in charge," Emmett sighed.

"I'm on my way. Keep them all there. We gave them an opportunity, and this is what they do. Is Izzy okay? I feel bad that we persuaded her to help," Riley replied.

"Me as well. She prepared so much material for them to walk through this subject. They will have enough credits to be able to play. In all the years of either playing football or teaching, I've never known this for a full team to be failing and not being able to play," Emmett clarified.

"I'll be there in ten minutes," Riley answered.

"Cheers," Emmett exhaled.

Emmett was shocked to see Chelsea's car when he left his office. He could hear the mock laughs and shouts as he turned the corner. Then he saw Charlotte holding Izzy's hand, whispering something to her as the rest carried her things to her car.

"What's going on? Where are you taking those things? Don't even think about driving that car," Emmett yelled out the door as he tried to catch them before they pulled away.

"What's happening, Luke? Why aren't you all in the classroom," Emmett asked.

"Those Chelsea loves started roasting Izzy. Chelsea turned up and yelled at her and Mr. Mason about him cheating on her with Izzy. It's worse than a soap opera on CBS," Luke answered as he stood in the doorway. "They needed to get her out of there before her panic attack got worse. It's good that Char knew what to do; her mom has panic attacks. I needed to pass this subject so I could play. I was hoping for a football scholarship to attend college. I should have done what the debate team did. They have contacted the art teacher from Port Angeles High School, where she has been teaching them. They go over to Port Angeles every week."

"Fuck Mr. Molina is going to go crazy. Why didn't someone tell me," Emmett yelled as he turned and ran into the school, followed closely by Luke.

Emmett rushed to the classroom. He was getting more pissed as he got closer with all the laughing and shouting.

"What the hell is going on? I left the classroom for ten minutes, and you have managed to scare your only chance of being able to play in the championship after Christmas," Emmett yelled. "You need to leave Miss. Cheswick; you have no reason to be here."

"That girl you brought to do my job can't teach; how old is she? She is sixteen or seventeen, not old enough to have been to college, so she hasn't got a certificate like me. Has she even graduated high school?" Chelsea sang out.

"Yes, she graduated with honors from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan," Emmett answered. "She did not need to go to college or University. A publishing house approached Izzy to illustrate children's books. She loves her job and makes more than you do."

He turned and looked at the class. "I'm disappointed with all of you."

"She stole Chelsea's fiancée. That's not cool with any of us," Sasha offered.

"Firstly, have some respect and call her Miss Cheswick. Regardless of whatever is happening in her private life, it is of no concern to her students. It should not be discussed with your students. If I find out that any of you have been to her home, clubbing with her, or to the spa. I will personally report her to the school board and the police," Emmett growled.

"It's nothing to do with you if we see Chelsea outside school. We also saw Mr. Mason with Chelsea and the letters he sent her. We don't mind telling your girl Izzy," Justine smirked.

"Exactly when did she show you them?" Riley yelled from the doorway. "Miss Cheswick, could you leave the building? You have no reason to be here. I'll be speaking to the principal about your behavior. Girls sit at the back, Miss. Sales, your teacher is on her way in. I think you might want to wash your kit. Get ready to hand in your pompoms. All the boys sit at the front. You had a chance, and you just blew it."

"Edward, you can leave; we won't have the workshop. You should maybe call someone for a ride home. You won't be using Izzy's car as your own anymore," Emmett quietly said.

"Where has Izzy gone? I thought she was outside getting some air," Teddy replied.

"No one of those boys drove off in her car with Izzy in the back. God knows where she will end up. You should be thankful that Charlie has returned to New York," Emmett offered.

"Luke, since you wanted to attend the workshop, could you and whoever else wanted to learn please go and sit in the classroom across the hall? I will be with you shortly," Emmett said.

"Well, it's better than I thought. There is just the team captain and four other team members to replace," Riley said as he rubbed his hand across his face.

"Now we just have to figure out how to get the others up to date in this subject or see if we can do something in another subject. This is a disaster," Emmett replied.

Ben

AJ followed the car as they got to Cheney's house. He was the first to knock on the door. A surprised Ben answered.

"Angie there's some teenagers in Izzy's car," Ben yelled to Angie.

Angie ran to the door to see what was happening. She knew Izzy was supposed to be helping the kids catch up in art at the High School. Tanya had been excited about Izzy going.

"Ben, come here. Something has to be wrong with Izzy," Angie bellowed over her shoulder as she rushed to the car.

Ben looked concerned. He had seen this kid with a biker gang in the trailer park. He hadn't seen this member before, which means the police have never caught him.

"I hope it was okay that we brought her here. After what happened at the high School, we didn't want her to be home alone. We need to get her away from Mason," AJ offered.

"No, you did the right thing. Why don't you all come in and tell us what happened," Ben offered.

Angie opened the car's back door and saw Izzy in Charlotte's arms.

"Hi, Izzy, the kids are at my parents. Why don't we go in so we can chat without one of the kids wanting you to draw a picture?" Angie asked quietly, holding her hand.

Izzy took her hand as Bobby began to growl.

"Come on, Bobby. Let's get you the treats you left here the last time you were here. Why don't you guys go into the house?" Angie instructed.

"Take a seat and tell me what happened. I know Izzy was supposed to be at the High School doing a workshop," Ben asked.

"Izzy began to introduce herself. Mr. Cullen left the room to find out where a couple of students from the football team were. Then, the football players and cheerleaders began to roast her. Mr. Mason did nothing to stop them. Then Miss Cheswick turned up," Lee offered.

"Angie, I need someone to go to Jan Walsh's house and apologize to her. Tell her she's not needed and give her this envelope. Tell her to take her children to the diner and have a meal that's already paid for," Izzy whispered.

"I'll go," AJ offered.

"Come back here when you finish. I'm just wondering why you guys were at the school. None of you are in the football squad, and I know they don't have male cheerleaders," Ben said.

They recited every detail. Angie was getting angrier as the tale unfolded.

"How many more times does that man have to hurt you, Izzy? If I were a violent person, I would knock some sense into him. Why can't he see what he's doing to you?" Angie growled. "Please don't return to New York like you said you would if he did this again."

Izzy just gave her a weak smile, not promising anything.

Ben asked, "What were you four doing there?"

Pete began to tell Ben all about Royce, saying he was introducing a program for kids who caused trouble. He would have them imprisoned if they didn't do what he said.

"He can't do that. There is no such program. Let me get my notepad so I can see how I can get you justice for this harassment," Ben said as he walked into his office.

"Could you help our mom as well? She never stole anything. She will be going to court without an attorney. We can't afford one," Charlotte said.

"Mom doesn't even have insurance or dad's pension," Peter added.

"Since returning home, Ben hasn't done much criminal legal work. He did a semester in Seattle in realtor law. They are in the same office as his. He's been working on contracts. He always wanted to be a public defendant like his dad," Angie said.

"That must be disheartening. Have you discussed how Ben can get more clients for criminal cases? I heard from Phil that people have been going to Port Angles. He might have more clients if he had another office and made people aware that he practiced criminal law. Many people have been accused of things they haven't done by Stanley and Newton. Why should lawyers in PA get the work that Ben can do?" Izzy suggested.

"You have a good point there, my friends. That could work. There are plenty of empty offices. I might suggest it," Angie replied.

"I don't know about you, but I'm hungry. Let me call Leah and Seth and ask them to go to the diner to pick up some lunch; it's all paid for, if that's okay with you," Izzy quietly asked. "I should tell the diner what happened as well."

"That will be fine. It's a bit of a squeeze. It's been a long time since we have done anything like this," Angie replied with a smile.
