Episode 25: The Night Before

A pleasant breeze. Light taps of dewdrops. Petals brushing against her fur and face ever so lightly. A cool sunlight that wasn't too bright or humid. A flowery aroma not hindered by pollen. These were the sensations Kayla awoke to. She slowly opened her eyes to a blue sky with few clouds. There were sunflowers all around her, and they were tall enough to reach her head in height, even as she sat up. She stood tall and slowly spun around. Nothing but these flowers, the sky, and glistening dewdrops as far as the eye could see. A few paces ahead was her only company.

"It's a dream, isn't it? I'm in the Dream World," she guessed.

"So you're quick on the uptake," the human replied, keeping her back to Kayla.

Things seemed calm enough that Kayla could get a better look at her. She wasn't quite as built as she initially thought, but she definitely looked athletic. Athletic and shapely, the 'ideal body' as far as she felt. The woman was tall, and wore a rich fit refined to the last dollar. A clean blue skirted jacket, a shirt underneath, and long pants that blended with thigh high socks. Despite that, she also wore trainers, the kind one would do hardcore parkour in. Her hair was jagged and cool, with a neck-length ponytail.

"Planning on staring the whole time, huh?" the woman replied. That made Kayla snicker beneath her breath, so she came closer.

"Dunno about you, but I was brought up to look at who I'm talking to," she replied.

"Listen to me, asshole. If you—"

"Can't hear you if you're not facing me," Kayla said boastfully.

"Don't! Just listen to me, damn it. If we lock eyes, it throws everything into jeopardy. So don't," the woman stated. She sounded anxious enough that she might be telling the truth, but it still bothered Kayla a bit. The woman wouldn't even let her see her face, rotating as Kayla tried to walk around her. "You've got Buneary ears. Use them."

"Hmpf," Kayla gave in, turning her back. "So what's the deal, anyway? Finally decided to show up?"

The woman didn't reply.

"You came to me in the Dream World. Figured you could say hi anytime, but something's holding you back," Kayla continued.

"So you're this smart, yet you're dragging your feet elsewhere… gods, you can be so freaking annoying," the woman sighed. "You knew I was watching you the whole time? Surprised you're not trying to kick me into next week."

"I'm a Buneary, not a Primeape. If you want to fight, gimme a reason to."

"What's to stop me from skinning you alive?"

"I'd actually like to see you try."

There was another pause, broken by a growl from the woman. "For goodness sake Kayla, get it together. I can't believe you're this cocky."

"Look, either stop being cryptic, or get the heck out of my head," Kayla spun to face her. "You show up, you tell me to kill Jirachi, now you're trying to insult me. Not my idea of a good dream, y'know."

The woman sighed again, and hung her arms in defeat. "You're going to take on Mathildaath soon, aren't you? They said you're not on the attack team, but you're probably going to end up fighting that archfiend anyway."

"Probably. I'm prepared to. If she really is a Dreamer, it only sems fitting," Kayla grinned. "Might end up being one of those cool fights I live for."

"You're not taking any of this seriously," the woman almost faced her. The brief glimpse Kayla got of her face was livid. "If you fight her as you are now, you'll be killed in an instant, save for if she decides to toy with you."

"Great. More insults. And I should listen to you because?" Kayla slumped.

"You both have the power to imagine anything you want and bring it into reality. Yet still, you're holding back and going through life like you don't have any powers at all," the woman explained. "I know what you're thinking. I know what Jirachi said. But you're trying to play hero, while Mathildaath won't care an inch. She has her world just the way she wants it, while you're faffing around with ordinary Pokémon attacks. In a world of someone else's unhinged dream, you won't stand a chance. And it won't be like mystery dungeons or the petty criminals you've faced so far. It won't even be like the Night Terrors - she will kill you a thousand times over if you don't get your act together."

"Pardon me – Night Terrors?" Kayla cocked her head.

"Jirachi didn't even explain that? That's the term for the monsters manifested by those crystal dens. To be specific, Night Terrors aren't real, they're monsters generated by the minds of the Visionary Pokémon using the den," the woman explained.

"So that's what they are," Kayla mumbled in concern. "Anyway, what're you suggesting I do?"

"Ignore the rubbish Jirachi's feeding you. Use your powers, Kayla. Make you and your friends' wishes come true. Power yourselves up. Make weapons, make up moves, manipulate the world. Let yourself go! Unless you make the Dream World your own, you will lose to her or anyone else who can use it," the woman explained. "Doesn't matter how or what you do. Do it without restraint. Make Kari a giant, give Pola a death ray, turn Shannon into an angel. You have to really go for it."

Kayla faced the ground. The flowers were being pulled by a slightly stronger breeze than usual. "I'm not trying hard enough, huh?"

"Exactly. You've got wishes and stuff you want. I know you do. Make them come true. Stop. Holding. Back," the woman demanded, sounding like she was about to cry. "That is the only way you're going to stand a chance. You have one day. Make it count."

"How do you know everything that's going on? Who are you?" Kayla leaned towards her. The woman went quiet. "Out of everything weird going on right now, you're the one that makes the least sense."

Still no reply. The woman put a hand on her elbow though, as if she was thinking.

"Will you at least tell me why you want to kill Jirachi?"

"Doing so would end all of this the easy way. For sure the easy way, but I don't know if it'll be the happiest way. And let's be honest, even if I told you why, you probably wouldn't believe me," the woman replied. The breeze was starting to get stronger.

"… For the first time ever, I think I wanna throw in the towel," Kayla became stern. "I try to get along with everyone I come across and be cool, but when it comes to you, something makes me really hate you."

"The feeling's mutual. I never liked you," the woman replied.

"And yet, I don't even know a thing about you. I don't even know your name. I just know you've got some vendetta against me and Jirachi," Kayla began to pace. "Why should I believe anything you have to say? I assume killing Jirachi would get rid of my powers, so is that what you're trying to do?"

"No! God damn it Kayla!" the woman hissed and stomped this time. "How? How can I get you to listen and take me seriously for once? This is literally life or death!"

"If it's so freaking important then just bloody tell me what's going on already!" Kayla shouted.

The woman cringed. Her teeth were grit, fists were clenched, and the way she twisted and twitched, it was like she really was going to fight. To that, Kayla remained stern, even as the breeze picked up into a powerful wind that tore the petals off the sunflowers around them.

"You… You and I are the same—"

"Kayla!" Jirachi cried, making both girls jump and twist. Jirachi was there, floating high up over them both. "Wake up! We need to get out of here!"

"Jirachi?" Kayla gasped. The little legendary was as plain-faced as ever, yet the desperation in his voice was clear.

"She is human. Her goal is to sabotage you," Jirachi warned.

"Don't… don't listen to him," the human shuddered, holding out a hand. It was awkward with her still avoiding eye contact. "Please, don't listen to him. You're Kayla Brunswick! You of all people should follow your heart!"

Kayla glanced between the two. Right now her heart was racing, but more concerned about the hurricane forming around them. Before she could make a move, the wind became so heavy that a wall of petals blinded her from her surroundings. She growled and braced as best she could, but all she could hear or see now was muffled howling and yellow shades from the sheer number of petals. She stumbled a bit, and then let out a cry, but in the centre of the hurricane, she wound up choking instead.

In a flash, she sat up. She was back in her bed in the dorm, breathing desperately and drenched in sweat and tears. There were no petals and no hurricane, only the worried stares of her friends, May and Ashe included this time. Kayla calmed down quickly, though she wasn't embarrassed. Her heart was still racing.

"I'm not even gonna ask if you're okay. This is the worst one yet," Pola's eyes were wide.

Kayla was about to reply, but a quick glance over and she spotted Jirachi. His face may have been blank and emotionless as ever, but to her, it delivered a thousand messages. She daren't say anything with him around, let alone her true thoughts.

"Kayla!" Kari cried worriedly. She was shivering with worry, paws pressed together.

"Kari… I'm fine, I promise. I-I mean that, not in an edgy way. It's just an uncomfortable dream, you know the kind," she lied, and shook her head.

"It's been a while since you've had one, but again, that looked like the worst yet. Are you sure you're gonna be okay?" Pola put her paws on her hips.

"Aww, you're worried about me again! It's cute when you worry, Pola," Kayla giggled. There was no reply, making her glance at the Plusle. Pola wasn't even annoyed; she was genuinely concerned. "I could worry you more by rambling about what was in that nightmare, but we already assumed that stopping Mathildaath would help the nightmares, right? We're on the crux of that, so we'll just fight it together right now."

"You don't have to hold back for us, you know," Shannon said sternly.

"I'll be alright. I already promised you," Kayla assured.

"If there's anything we can do to help, please, please let us do it," Kari begged desperately.

"Aww, I will Kari. That's a promise between friends," Kayla smiled. "… In fact, I feel better already, seeing everyone care so much. Genuinely."

"This is a bit fluffy for my morning tastes," May confessed, lightly tugging at her hair.

"Killjoy," Pola spat.

"Hee hee, I get it. Must feel kinda melodramatic," Kayla giggled, and hopped out of bed. "Okay. What's the plan today?"

"R and R to prep for the raid, right? And you're supposed to advise us," Kari turned to May.

"Correct. To tell the truth, you're free to do as you wish. I even advise someone head to Repose Town to properly stock up any supplies you need. Buy more than you need for at least two dungeons and a road trip," May instructed. "Otherwise, use the spare time to get done any outstanding chores or things you want to do. This is a major battle after all. You do not want to go in with any distractions."

"… Dare I say a quick stop in Hammock would have more choice?" Kayla teased. No one replied. "Too soon?"

"I do not wanna go back there for at least a month or two," Pola grumbled.

"Even I think it's a little too risky," Kari agreed. "Going shopping there sometime does sound fun, though."

"I'll handle your shopping and supplies. One of you keeps track of your stock, don't you?" Ashe proposed.

"That's me! I'll lend ya a paw after breakfast," Kari said cheerfully.

"Heh, I suppose that's it, then. Everyone, go take a load off. Go do what you've gotta do, and then get an early night. I'm sure there's things you all want to take care of on your own," Kayla nodded to everyone. "I know what my plans are. So if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go get started."

"Huh? What could you have to do on your own? Especially after that nightmare, it kinda feels like you're still keeping stuff from us," Pola started playing with her weave.

"That's reading too much into it, but you're welcome to come with, if you want," Kayla made her way to leave.

"Before brekkies?" Kari cried.

"Or you don't have to, if you don't wanna," Kayla giggled.

No one left with her, not even Jirachi, oddly enough. She couldn't help but feel a little thankful for that, as it meant things would feel as personal as they did before. Just her and her thoughts until she got outside, where Moby was also on her own. The Audino was shadowboxing with a variety of physical moves. Kayla sat and watched for a short while. Moby's elemental punches faded into the air, leaving behind light traces of their respective energies, enough that it looked like they might hurt if someone touched them.

"I thought it was just Secret Power and Double Slap with you. Thunder Punch, too? Is there anything you don't know?" Kayla remarked.

For some reason Moby jumped, assuming a fighting stance before she realised it was Kayla. "Great Wooloo woman! Don't sneak up on me like that!"

"… But I didn't—"

"Urf, it's only you. What're you doing back here anyway? Our training's done," Moby calmed down. Her energies disappeared with a sigh.

"Er, how do I put this… something big's coming up, and I was wondering if you could give me a tip or two. Just to make sure I'm in top form and stuff, y'know?" Kayla swayed casually.

"Hmm," Moby's eyes narrowed. Those red eyes pierced Kayla's nerves, making her sweat. "Rrright. Yes, of course. You got put on the raid team against Mathildaath after all, didn't you?"

"You know about – are you on the team, too?"

"Hello? One of RSE's strongest, right here? I was one of the first Pokémon considered. Heck, I helped the scouts in the initial investigations," Moby bragged. "Coming to me was sound thinking. How's Move Theory treating you?"

"There's a few things I'm confused about, actually. We only meant to work on my speed, yet now my Quick Attack hits like something I've never seen before. How'd I get so strong so suddenly?" Kayla cocked her head.

"It's just leverage, really. Think about it," Moby began to pace. "The energy for the Pokémon attack is condensed into your feet right until you're about to attack. This builds up so much speed that when you do land the hit, it's less like getting hit by a Buneary and more like a charging Rhydon. The next step for you is to concentrate all the energy into the part of your body you're going to attack with."

Kayla started tapping her foot. "So if I kept the energy in my feet and kicked instead of tackling, it'd be even stronger?"

"Precisely. It's because you're using the same amount of energy as is required to do the attack normally, but concentrated into one precise area of your body. It's concentrated, like lava bubbling up in a volcano, and erupts when you make the impact," Moby explained, motioning a punch into her palm. "The same theory works when defending yourself. If you concentrated the energy into parts of your body that you brace, the energy takes the heat and defends you."

"Problem there is without arm movements, defending's a difficult one. That's why I chose to stick to speed," Kayla pointed out.

"Buneary use their ears and feet more, anyway. Concentrate your forces there, parry your enemy, and you can defend yourself. But I concur, that's a bit advanced for a little scrapper like you. Just bear it in mind as you improve," Moby nodded.

"Not that I'm unconfident or anything, but with the way everyone's making out Mathildaath to be, it never hurts to be too prepared. Is there anything else you can help me out on?" Kayla asked.

"I do wonder… What moves do you know, Kayla?"

"Quick Attack, Jump Kick, Double Kick, Rest apparently, and Ice Beam," Kayla swayed happily.

"Ah. One of those is not like the rest," Moby became cocky.

"… That was bad and you know it," Kayla went half-lidded.

"I didn't mean Rest itself, silly," the Audino giggled. "I meant Ice Beam. That's gotta be your weakest move, eh?"

"Mum taught me that one. It's hard to do, but the coverage has saved me on a lot of occasions," Kayla nodded. "What about it?"

"The coverage is smart. Ice hits many types of Pokémon effectively, and at the moment, that's your only option for hitting ghosts. However, it's also your only special attack, when you seem more geared toward physical," Moby began pacing again. "So how about we change that up into a physical move, huh?"

"I kinda like having the option, but go on, I'm listening," Kayla shifted to the side with a grin.

"The same way you use Ice Beam, try channelling that ice energy into your feet rather than the oxygen in your body. That'll turn your kicks into ice type kicks," Moby explained. Kayla got it, but looked down at herself, perplexed by how to act it out. "Triple Axel requires a sense of rhythm in the way you bring up energy, same way as using Double Kick. However, it's three attacks and not two, so you've got a little extra work there."

"Hold on, you gave me three comparisons there," Kayla shook herself. "So I channel energy like I'm doing Ice beam, but only into my feet like I do with Quick Attack. Then I rekindle that energy on hit, same as I do with Double Kick?"

"It's a lot less complex than it sounds. I'm sure you can pull it off," she smiled.

"That's a whole different thing! Ice Beam is turning oxygen into ice, not Pokémon energy," Kayla cried.

"You understand Move Theory, so you'll figure it out. That's the cool thing about Pokémon attacks, there's different ways everyone's got to doing them all," Moby became excited. "If you can't figure it out right now, don't sweat it. We'll need you in top form, so just stick with what you know. Keep it in mind and practice in your own time."

"Your advice is surprisingly flip-floppy today," Kayla slumped.

"That's just because you're an expert. I won't mince anything with you, especially if we're going to battle someday. I'm looking forward more to going all out on you than I am to fighting the archfiend, just so you know."

"Geez, I appreciate the faith in me. Buuuut, this is gonna take me some time," Kayla sighed. "Don't you have anything quick to teach me for just the archfiend?"

Moby stopped dancing on her toes. "Impatience will get you nowhere when it comes to Move Theory, Miss Brunswick. The only 'quick thing' you can think about now is concentrating your energy better to attack and defend."

"Hmm… I was hoping you'd have a regime or a plan or something, like when we trained earlier. I guess this is kinda last minute. Sorry about that," Kayla calmed down.

"Huh? I can't use Triple Axel outside of Metronome, how'd I be able to teach you a move I can't use?" Moby grinned.

"Wait, what? But you taught me Quick- why suggest I learn it if you don't even know how to use it?" Kayla shifted back. "In that case, can't I learn Ice Punch or something?"

"You forgot what I said last time. I don't have anything more to teach you, and I meant that, y'know," Moby stated, surprising her. "You understand Move Theory. That's all you need to know. You just need to play about with Move Theory in your own style, keep up the regular training, and you'll get better in ways only you can."

"So you just want me to figure things out on my own, pretty much," Kayla leaned back.

"You can consider Triple Axel a pointer, if you prefer. And it's not like you can go wrong when it comes to actually teaching yourself moves," Moby began to ramble. "Try stuff out. If it works, try and make it better. Get faster at it, more efficient. That's all there is to it. You've done the hard part."

I've done the hard part, huh? The real hard part is doing all this stuff without pointers… How does one start thinking about stuff they don't normally think about regularly? Kayla cocked her head. It's not like she's wrong, though. If it's all Move Theory, then all I have to do is go with the flow and keep trying stuff out.

"Oh, here's a thought," Moby got her attention again. "You battle alongside Pola a lot, right? Has she ever spoken to you about revelations?"

"It's how she learns her Visionary Magic. I'm surprised you know about it. Can you use Visionary Magic too?" Kayla looked up at her in interest.

"Heh, I wish! A whole new world would open up to me if I could. I looked deeply into it and practiced for like a year, but I couldn't make even one gem sparkle!" Moby cried. "What I was gonna say is it can be similar principles, if you're looking for more pointers. Sit and meditate sometime, thinking about your past battles, or the way Pokémon fight and use moves. You might figure something out."

"Meditation, huh?" Kayla cocked her head.

"Mind you don't fall asleep, though," Moby said. Kayla gave her a look, making her giggle and blush. "Speaking from experience. Naturally."

"Y'know what? I know Rest, and I didn't even know I knew it," Kayla snickered. "It's kinda inevitable I'd fall asleep."

"Maybe your dreams will contain revelations," Moby teased.

Kayla froze, eyes widened. DOES SHE KNOW?

"Hey hey, no need to have that terrified look. You never know, they could, I'm just throwing words out right now," Moby laughed. She quickly calmed, and rubbed her belly. "Y'know, I never got to treat you that time on prom night. Still fancy those uh, sour cream dogs, was it?"

"For breakfast? That's a bit heavy. But if you're buying, I won't say no," Kayla smiled. "That said, maybe save it 'til after the big battle. It'll feel more rewarding that way."

"Aww c'mon. Even the best fighters have gotta chill some days. And I dunno if he did for you, but Gema told me to take it easy today so I'm in top form tomorrow, so it's no use stressing over getting stronger and stuff."

"… Heh, you're right," Kayla sighed and turned away. "Trust me, I'm not stressing as much I probably look. I just wanna focus on this right now."

"Suit yourself," Moby shrugged, and then danced on her feet. "If you change your mind, you know where to find me for the next hour."

Kayla watched her jog off into the building. Once alone, she faced the empty fields and took a deep breath, taking in the calm breeze. Alright. Triple Axel. Let's do this.

She breathed as if to charge Ice Beam, and even instinctively planted her feet. For Kayla, Ice beam was like spitting out a large gulp of water, only with a specific refinement in the way she had to move her mouth. The cold air wasn't inside her, but gathered right in front of her mouth, so it was arguably a little closer to hissing sharply. She needed that energy by her feet this time, so she shut her eyes and tried to focus the same she would use Quick Attack. Next thing she knew, she accidentally breathed in the frigid air, making her cough and sputter frosty breath.

"Argh… ow… this is gonna be easier said than done," she groaned.

Later that evening…

The academy felt strange, after today. Nothing was different. Sunset hues lit the halls, nocturnal Pokémon were beginning to wake as other Pokémon returned from their missions, filling the cafeteria or winding down around their dorms. The idea that the strongest of the academy were about to embark on a quest to defeat Mathildaath made it all feel different, nostalgic even, as if she would be leaving all of this behind for a long time. In reality, things would probably stay just like this, even if they succeeded in defeating the archfiend. At least it was quiet enough to get an early night. Kayla's training hadn't left her tired, but she still felt like she could hit the hay for some extra hours.

Alright. A short round to check on everyone and that all our supplies are in order, and then I'll wish everyone a goodnight, she thought to herself as she slid open the door to the dorm. She heard a yelp, and Pola shifted, sat on the windowsill. "You? Where's everyone else?"

"Oh, hi. Beats me, I just got here," Pola replied, tucking her paws behind her head.

"Wait a minute…" Kayla's eyes narrowed. The Plusle feigned ignorance, but she could spot the uncomfortable shift from a mile away. "Seriously, Pola? Tonight? We need to be well rested for tomorrow."

"Whaaat? I'm just sitting here. You know I sit here all the time," Pola flapped a paw at her.

"… The window's open," Kayla said, half-lidded.

"It's hot in here."

"Oh c'mon Pola, don't treat me like I'm dumb. You were gonna run off to the Waking Wake tonight, weren't you?" Kayla sighed.

"Urgh, so what if I was? Perfect way to cool off and chill, ain't it?" Pola swayed her head with her groan.

"If you get drunk and hungover, it'll seriously impact the team. We need you in top form. You're more mature than this, or I thought you were, anyway."

"Oh piss off, don't you start givin' me that lecture," she spat. "I was gonna come back early. You know I do my shit properly."

"You were going to run off to a nightclub the night before possibly our most important mission ever. Clearly you don't 'do your shit properly'," Kayla mimicked her. "You shouldn't even be doing this stuff, anyway. You're too young to drink, and the guys there can do all sorts of…"

She trailed off as the Plusle was mocking her mouth movements with a paw. "Ya done?"

Kayla sighed. "Seriously, what am I gonna have to do to get you to start… you know? You can't keep doing this."

"I ain't gone for weeks. I haven't even had a drink in gods knows how long! That time we all went doesn't count, 'cos Shannon went and killed the vibe and everythin'," Pola threw her arms up. "But it figures even someone like you wouldn't notice who I really am. It's always Pola the dirty delinquent, drinks like a fish and fucks her money away on sleazy guys. I do missions right, I train Shannon like I promised, I guide new students, but nooo, you've got no agency, no decency or shame… once people see you as a lowlife that's all you ever are, no matter how much good ya do. Once you're labelled, that's it, you're labelled forever. Fuck this shit."

Kayla was gawking, and once Pola realised she was staring, her heart began to race. Pola started growling and playing with her weave, too.

"Grr, now I'm whining like a Puppy. Don't bother trying to act all smart, I've heard it all before. Ain't gonna change me at this point," she grumbled. "Why the hell should I bother trying to be 'the good girl' when everyone treats me like 'the bad girl'? Might as well have fun and be both."

"I… aw, I had no idea this was affecting you like this," Kayla casually turned away. She hopped up to her bed and started kicking her feet. "Uh, I didn't say something triggering, did I?"

"Just reciting stuff I've heard before really, no big deal. But now that the cat's outta bag, you're not gonna stop me, you know."

"… I know how you feel, believe it or not," Kayla looked up with a smile.

"You do? Or are you just trying to patronize me?" Pola was sceptical. "You don't drink or party, and unless you've been keeping some secret boyfriend from us, I find it hard to picture you getting it on. How could you know or care how this feels?"

"You need to be a proper girl. Eat like this, stand like this, go do this, and get a boyfriend so you can be a Lopunny," Kayla recalled, eyes shut. "All the time until I was like, fifteen. And now, comments on my weight, no matter what the conversation's about. It's a miracle you guys even got through to Mum last time."

"… To be fair, weight's a serious issue," Pola raised an eyebrow. Kayla gave her a look. "I ain't gonna butter it up. You're an eyesore for a team leader, but no one says it."

"Wow. Seriously, Pola? You were so close to getting it just now," Kayla snickered. "Look, ah… Tomorrow's just a bit too important, okay? You're right, but just take a rain check tonight, please? Any other time, I'll let you do your thing."

"Wait, what?" Pola was surprised.

"Maybe like… Ugh, I know this is gonna make me sound like a cranky old parent, but maybe let me know when you're planning to go out? So I at least know where you are, or I can ease up on what mission we do the next day or something," she suggested. "I won't claim to get what you find fun about it, but if that's how you take a load off and you can keep yourself safe, then I've got nothing to complain about."

"Now I know this is some kinda sneaky trap. You girls gonna follow me or something?" Pola folded her arms.

"Go away. I have way better things to do than babysit you. I've just had a lot of thinking today and like… things have gotten kinda serious lately. I was gonna ease up on everything after Mathildaath, maybe take a little break. But I'm still responsible for you as team leader, and I can't have you being hungover when we're about to take on a big mission, you know?" she explained. "So just, be cool? For me?"

Pola slowly unfurled her arms, looking her up and down. Kayla was confused, and then unnerved as she came closer, still scanning her from top to bottom. Despite that, Kayla remained stern, keeping eye contact as best she could. Eventually the Plusle cocked a grin, and put her paws on her hips.

"You sure you don't wanna join me again sometime? I can show you some good eats."

"You… really don't get anything I just said, do you?" Kayla slumped.

"Hey, that was genuine. Going out doesn't just mean nightclubbing. Bars are like, late-night cafes, they're the heroes of the nightlife. Feeding pokes and sobering them up with good food and drink after a dance," she proposed. "If getting hooked for the night ain't your thing, I just figured intro-ing you to good eats would. Or not. You tell me, what's your ideal night out?"

"… You're inviting me out again?" Kayla realised.

"If you wanna be cool, I'll be cool. Won't even drink when you're around. Not that I could, anyway," Pola walked back over to the windowsill, closing the window before sitting back up on it. "Only if you wanna, of course. Not gonna force ya."

"I mean I don't mind; it sounds nice. Tonight's just been very sudden change of hearts with you," Kayla cocked her head.

"I… ugh, I still don't get you. This is just my way of trying to get to know you, okay? If you'd rather stick with the label, then whatever," Pola blushed and swished her paw.

"Uh huh. Why's it gotta be at night?" Kayla smiled.

"We're working during the day, duh?"

"We're independent, here. We can take a day off anytime," Kayla smiled even happier. "It sounds nice. Let's do it sometime. No Kari or Shannon, either. Just us two."

"Oh wow, okay. Somethin' tells me you are into this stuff, you just ain't got the game for it, heh heh."

"Think what you want," Kayla rolled her eyes. "Er, good thing no one else is back yet, actually. There is something I wanted to talk to you about. Your wish…"

"My wish? Oh right, your Dreamer powers and all that. Yeah I sorta gave up on that, gotta be honest with ya."

"You gave up? But I'm right here," Kayla felt a little saddened by that.

"You can't spawn a boyfriend, you can't gimme lots of money… I dunno what else you could do that'd really satisfy me. It's like you conveniently can't do any of the stuff that would give me what I want," Pola snickered.

"That's because I genuinely can't, though. These powers aren't going anywhere, so you've got time to think of something else. Give it some real thought, 'cos I'm serious about getting you girls' wishes granted," Kayla became stern.

"Speaking of change of hearts," Pola smirked. "That boyfriend's my dream, y'know. A guy who lets me be who I wanna be and do whatever I want, and is happy with all of that. I don't exactly wanna settle, but I'd love to have a family like that. Just a bunch of cool pokes on the road, livin' it up, you get me?"

Kayla felt her heart go. Wait, this isn't like before… she sounds so genuine all of a sudden.

"You can't dream that up for me, so it's pointless. If you could, it'd probably end up being weird with all the Dream World rules and stuff. So seriously, it's cool. Don't sweat it," Pola said, hopping up to her bed. "I dunno where the others are, but I guess I'll be the good girl and go to bed early. When you find 'em, try not to wake me up."

"Yeah…" she mouthed. Come to think of it, I've never asked these two about their family. They know mine now, or at least my Mum, so it wouldn't be too rude to ask sometime, would it?

Pola really did shuffle into bed, so Kayla smiled and left it at that. She gave the dorm a quick look over in case Jirachi showed up or something, but it was as normal as ever, so she slinked out. Now where would the others be at this time? Kari's probably doing chores for Pokémon, maybe Ashe or something…

Skipping with that thought, she made it to the staircases at the end of the hall before spotting Shannon. The Pachirisu was so lost in thought he didn't notice her approach. "Isnomia to Shannon, anyone home?"

"Urk- I—" he flinched, making her giggle. "K-Kayla… good evening."

"Just checking up on everyone before I hit the hay. You were staring pretty intensely, is something there?" she asked, looking down the stairs.

"There's a dungeon down there," he informed. "Not a mystery dungeon, just a dungeon, you know, the regular kind. Pola showed me it that time, since I was supposed to learn a move there. I didn't because of our, erm, 'incident', but I was thinking of going there to try and learn it after all."

"Hmm… it's a bit late but need a paw? I don't mind," Kayla cocked her head.

"Only Visionaries can get through it. I guess that means I could guide you, but it's also just risky. I have to meditate in a hot spring down there. I'm not exactly the best with water," he confessed, scratching the back of his head.

"Oh right, you and me both," Kayla turned away nervously. "If you fell in, I dunno how I'd pull you out. Can't swim without arms and all that. Sorry."

"It's not a big deal. I'll give it a miss and get rested for tomorrow," he sighed.

"You're worried about being strong for tomorrow too, huh?" Kayla grinned.

"It is a big deal. It's sort of like, a test. If I can fight well here, then I'm closer to Ditto. I might even use my knife," he began to mumble and his eyes gleamed sharper, to which her heart sped up.

"Hey, hey, take it easy. They don't want us fighting the big bad, remember? And your job's healing and support. I'd prefer knowing I can fall back and get energized by you, not whether you can take down a criminal," she replied.

"It bothers me I'm this useless," he turned away. "You don't need to patronize me. Oran berries do the job, and Pola could do Thunder Wave if she tried. Instead, I'm learning all these worthless moves that aren't bringing me any closer to my goal, or to actually helping you girls out. Truth to be told, it's infuriating."

"Hmm… I get it, but just know I'm not trying to patronize you. Me and Kari get up close and personal, Pola pelts 'em with magic from a distance, and you keep us all on our feet while troubling the enemy. I think it's a working system," she replied. "And don't think I misunderstand you, either. When we come up against that Ditto, the show's all yours, even if he kills you."

Shannon looked at her sharply.

"I don't think anyone could kill you, but that's how much I'd stand back," she stated, making sure she appeared stern. "So when that time comes, make sure he doesn't."

That gave him a lot to think about. He couldn't look at her properly, but he wasn't exactly unnerved, either. He didn't say anything for a while though, so she casually walked closer to lean on the wall beside him. "Hey, a little off-topic. You got anything you want me to dream for you, yet? A wish to grant and all that."

"A wish?"

"Yeah, y'know. With my Dreamer powers and stuff. I said I was gonna do it for everyone, might as well get started. I'm happy to do anything I can do for you, especially if it makes you happier."

"Didn't realise I was included in that," he turned away.

"Really? Why wouldn't you be?"

"I'm imposing on you girls. Nothing's set in stone and never will be. I learn magic, get stronger, fight Ditto, and get out of your fur."

Kayla's furrowed look grew to slight annoyance. "How long are you going to delude yourself of that?"

"I'm not…"

"Pola likes you, a lot. Genuinely. I know she comes on kinda strong, and there's an age gap, but it's not like… look I trust you enough not to do anything weird with her. Kari's not afraid of you, I think you're cool, and I sorta owe you one for helping out with my headache that time," she explained.

"I wish you'd forgotten about that," he sighed and shook his head.

"Wouldn't even if you wanted me to. I get trying to be a gentleman, or a hyperfocused assassin or whatever it is you're going for, but I think we've been through too much to keep things strictly business at this point," she grinned. "What I mean is, you're allowed to make comments, and ask for stuff, and be cool with us. Have some fun, don't hold back, be the real you. And when Ditto's done, I still want you here. Not as team healer, but as a trusted friend. Someone on that level deserves a wish, whatever it is."

"Being the only guy in a team of girls, I don't think you know how that feels. A single wrong word from me is all it takes. I'd rather not risk overstepping those boundaries," his eyes narrowed.

"The fact that you're this worried about doing that is how I know you're not capable of overstepping. You care too much," she smiled warmly. "I kinda wanna get to know you more. You seem cool to hang out with."

"You know my goal is murder, yet you're trusting me as a friend?" he stated.

"Heartless until the end, huh?" Kayla shut her eyes.

"Look, I'd prefer things to stay as distant as they are. I'm not going to half-ass anything or lament my role here, so you can rest easy knowing you'll get your healing and support," he leaned beside her. They were quiet for a moment. Just the fact that he leaned beside her felt like precious progress, but it also made her equally nervous.

"Heh… hee hee hee, I think for a moment, I just got a revelation of my own," Kayla broke the silence, and danced in front of him. He was confused. "You're really cool, you know. And cool Pokémon are allowed a wish from a Dreamer. So go think on it. Whatever your wish is, I'll give it an honest go."

"Not gonna take no for an answer, huh?" he sighed. "But you know my dream and my life goal,"

"And what happens afterwards?" she grinned. He uttered a response this time. "There is no way a guy like you hasn't considered what he's going to do after you kill Ditto. If you don't wanna tell me, that's cool. Just let me help with it."

"What happens afterwards is I'll probably be arrested for premeditated murder," he said quietly.

"And after you get out the slammer?"

No response, except for earnest surprise.

"Hey, no rush. We've got our whole lives to think about stuff," she smiled as she tried to wave him off. "I'm gonna go find Kari. See you tomorrow, okay?"

"I… see you…" he muttered, completed dumbfounded. "Wait… what did she mean by revelation?"

This isn't going well at all, Kayla sighed to herself, walking toward the cafeteria this time. I thought I was doing well, but Shannon still feels like that. We must be doing something to make him uncomfortable, but other than Pola, I dunno what it could be.

When she got to the big food hall, she quickly realised it was later than she expected. The lighting was warm and romantic rather than dusky and dim, and without the natural daylight seeping in from wherever it normally came from, the hall felt like a campsite after sunset. It wasn't busy, though there were a few Pokémon around, mostly nocturnal teams chatting and planning their activities. What was new was a staircase to the left as she came in, the same one they used to build the balcony when prom was on. Kayla's curiosity got the better of her, and she hopped on up.
Maybe I should approach this the same way Pola does… If I just took Shannon out for a bite and a chat, would Pokémon get suspicious? Would he get weirded out and see it as a date, too? Or am I being weird that I want to chill with him? Man, this stuff sucks.

She rolled her eyes as she reached the top, surprised by what she found. Rather than a balcony overlooking the cafeteria, it was an entirely new section of the hall reserved for a small bar, with even more chilled lighting and light jazz playing from a radio. Unlike the Waking Wake, this place was clean, smooth, quiet, and had only a few Pokémon minding their own business. A familiar Hisuian Typhlosion and his Murkrow-hatted Lucario partner lounged on sofas at the far end sharing a drink, while a Pichu looked half asleep at the bar stools.

"Wait a minute, May?" Kayla squeaked.

"Hm? Oh, Kayla. Good evening. This is quite a place for you to show up. I didn't take you for the type," May replied. She had a weirdly antagonistic smirk, as though she were looking down on the Buneary.

"This is my first time here," Kayla said slowly. "I didn't even know RSE had a bar. Why does Pola bother going out?"

"Because if anyone here were caught serving underage students, this whole establishment would be shut down faster than you can blink," May shut her eyes and tightened her scarf. Strange that she wore the scarf indoors, but not the band around her ear. "On that note, you should leave. This is grownup time in a grownup zone."

"I er… huh. Are you actually drinking? I didn't take you for the type, actually," Kayla replied.

"Hmm," May pondered her response. "You're surprised an adult is taking a one-off evening to themselves?"

I daren't say this out loud, but it's really hard to think of her as one, Kayla scratched her side. May sipped from a highball glass with tons of ice, so what she was having must have been light. "I had to tell Pola off for it earlier, I just didn't think I'd spot the brains of the group, too."

"So far you and I are on formal business, so I wouldn't expect you to know much about me. You can be rest assured that this is a very rare occurrence," May stated without facing her. "I'm not about to explain why this works to a seventeen year old. You should head to bed."

"Hey I may not be allowed to drink, but that doesn't mean I can't jam here if I'm supervised," she teased, hopping up to the stool beside May. "I still owe you a wish. The better I know you, the better that's going to come out."

"My my, you're not about to let business talk slip in a public space, are you? I thought I could trust you, Kayla," May sung teasingly.

"Heh, it's just a wish. Doesn't mean I can grant it," Kayla winked at her. "You still haven't told me what it is, despite being so adamant that I accept it."

May took a gulp of her drink this time. She faced the bartender, a Heliolisk with goggles and a brown jacket. They didn't pay the girls any mind, sorting out some glass bottles. "What I want requires critical timing and a certain amount of information to be known. That time is not now, and it is unlikely to be soon."

Gods, you as well? Does no one want a wish? Kayla cried in her head. "What the heck does all that mean?"

"It means not now."

"Well I figured that out," Kayla swayed her head. There was a pause, and May wouldn't even look at her. "You really don't wanna talk now, huh?"

"Your demographic makes for poor drinking partners. We can talk another time. To bed, with you," May replied.

"Yeesh, alright. With that attitude, you're not looking at any drinking partners, y'know," Kayla scoffed as she got up. "If you're not on top of your game tomorrow, I'm calling you a party pooper."

That got the Pichu to eye her as she left, though they quickly returned to their drink for another long sip. May sighed and leaned back a bit. "Something tells me taming that one is going to be a hassle I'm not going to enjoy…"

Looking over the cafeteria one last time, Kari was still nowhere to be seen. Concluding that they'd missed each other somehow, Kayla gave up and returned to the dorm, passing many more nocturnal groups than she imagined were actually at the academy. They were kinder than the morning rush at least, making space for her and any others passing through the halls, while keeping the dormitory area clear and quiet.

Kayla yawned quietly as she slipped back in, only to then freeze. Pola's bed was empty with the blankets thrown aside haphazardly, while the window was wide open. The light for the dorm was even on. "Seriously? After our talk and everything?"

She walked over to close it, but hesitated for a bit. The breeze was pleasant and cooled their dorm quite nicely. After all that talk… what do I have to do to get her to take this seriously? If a mission with Mathildaath doesn't do it, what would? My own style of punishments? Setting rules for the team? … I'm not actually gonna have to stalk her, am I?

That last thought made her shiver. Time for bed it seemed, until she clicked she'd have to somehow close this window. It was as easy as pulling it down from above, but it would be an awkward grip for her ears or feet, if she could reach with either. She stood on the windowsill to try, only to grumble in bother. This was a bad idea.

"Ooh, hellooooooo," an upbeat voice sung. Kayla paused for a moment, and then slowly peered outside. Kari was lounging on the grass right outside, looking straight up at her. She gave a jolly wave and smile. "Hiya!"

"What're you doing… out… here…" Kayla mouthed. She glanced back and forth, and then hopped out.

"Just chillin'. Literally. Hee hee, I'm a little too excited to sleep so I wanted to cool off. What about you?" Kari replied.

Kayla sighed and leaned against the wall. "Kinda annoyed. Pola seriously went out on a night like this. Even after I told her off and everything."

"Oooh, that's why she didn't wanna go," Kari replied. "S-sorry! I said she should."

"Wha-HUH? You?" Kayla flinched.

"I know what she's like, she can get kinda stressed when things get too tense. And stuff's kinda been for a while," Kari admitted. "I trust her though; she'll be good and back. You don't have to worry about a thing!"

"Somehow coming from you, that's a lot more reassuring," she sighed, calming right down. "You've known Pola for way longer than I have. I can only put faith in that."

"Aww, I hope I didn't get in the way of anything," Kari said. "If you had plans, or I made Pola break a promise or something, I'm sorry!"

"You're fine, it's cool! Honestly," Kayla said. "While I've got you, though…"

"Yeeeeeess?"

"… You think of a wish yet? Something I can dream for you?"

"Aww, silly Kayla!" Kari perked up, ears twitching cutely as she coiled up. "You're already granting my wish. I couldn't ask for more!"

"Wha?"

That set off the Furret's giggling, that infectious pep that always filled Kayla with warmth inside. "Team Daybreak, silly! You leading the team and all of us doing cool stuff is everything I ever wished for. And now, we're doing super duper well enough that Headmaster Gema's taking us on a mission to do with Mathildaath. Whether we do well or not, we're in the big leagues! I could only dream of something like this, but it's really happening!"

"Oh er… that's cool that I'm doing a good job and all but… wait uh…" Kayla didn't know how to respond.

"I'm serious! I guess it sounds pretty corny, but I'm so happy. You've been my dream come true ever since I met you. I dunno why you've been so nice to me, but it's me who owes you the world!" Kari squeaked. "You even went to prom with me when I was at my lowest. You've just, come to RSE and made everything so fun and nice for me."

"Aren't you scared or something? How long has the archfiend reigned, fifteen years or something? We're about to enter that one's world. All we know we'll face is what the scouts have told us. Anything could happen," Kayla teased her.

"I know, isn't that just the most eerie beerie exciting thing EVER? We're about to see a world no one else has ever seen before! Kinda, I think? Sorta? Maybe? And help save the whole world. We're awesome, I'm awesome, you're awesome!" the Furret stretched up high. She was probably meant to bounce with happiness. "We're about to become a part of history. For the first time ever, my life's about to mean something, and it's all thanks to you!"

Before she realised what was happening, Kari stretched over and cuddled Kayla tightly, making her yelp.

"So thank you, thank you so, so much Kayla! You're the bestest buddy a girl could ask for, in the whole wide universe!" Kari nuzzled her.

"U-u-uh… K-K-Kari," Kayla shuddered.

Kari froze, her eyes went wide, and then she yelped and flinched back to normal. "S-s-sorry! I-I didn't mean to get so touchy! I just got all excited and happy and when that happens I—"

"Kari, zoomies," Kayla giggled. The Furret clammed shut, paws over her mouth. "You can breathe! You don't have to… go quiet…"

"BWAH," Kari let out an exaggerated gasp. She still didn't say anything, letting Kayla look her up and down. Kari's tail was doing its funny wag still, and they were blushing a little, too.

She's too damn cute, Kayla admitted to herself, feeling her own cheeks heat up a little. It was only a few seconds ago, yet she could feel the chill of the night replace the warmth of Kari's hug, bothering her. "So uh… you don't have a wish I could dream? At all? It doesn't have to be a one off or a big thing like joining the team or a life goal. Just anything!"

"Anythiiiing?"

"Yeah, indulge yourself a little," Kayla started sweating. Kari started getting jittery enough to play with her paws.

"That food dream was really fun. I'd love to go there again! And eat whatever I want! Gummis and cake and ooh, you know those sprinkle covered doughnuts and stuff?"

Kayla's eyes widened. "Oh, right. I guess I could make it so you don't grow big or anything weird. If I can figure that out, you could eat as much as you wanted without restraint."

"Nah, what good is eating if you don't get full from it? And it could be useful, I could grow really giant and squash my enemies!" Kari got eager.

"You can do that anyway! Without eating mountains of food?" Kayla raised an eyebrow.

"Wait, I can? How?" Kari screeched.

"By… stretching into a giant? Like you usually do?"

"… Oh yeah. I can. But it's embarrassing when I do it that way!" she whined. Kayla opened her mouth to argue with the logic, but came to a conclusion without thinking about it. Instead she burst out laughing, more than she realised too, doubling over onto her back "K-Kayla?"

"Sorry, sorry. It's just, you don't put all this on, do you?" Kayla had to catch her breath. "Hah… hah, okay. You're not like anyone I've ever met, even Pokémon who say stuff without thinking. I never know what you're thinking or what's gonna come outta your mouth. I just realised it's what I find really fun about you!"

"E-er is that a good thing?" Kari was worried.

"Yes! A very good thing. Not ironically, or metaphorically or anything fancy like that. Just, never change, Kari. Seriously," she smiled warmly. "Food dream's easy to do, it's just, leaving you with that aftermath of a belly is a no-go. Er, mind if I do it after the Mathildaath thing, just in case I mess up?"

"Hey it's your powers, and I'm being selfish in asking. You can do it anytime, there's no rush! It's not even important," Kari calmed down at last. "You're so cool, wanting to grant everyone's wishes. Are you granting your own? I'm kinda nosy what your dreams are, Kayla. Not the bad ones, I mean the good ones that'd grant your own wishes!"

Kayla's eyes widened. "That's… actually a really good question."

"Hee hee, so caught up being cool to everyone else that you forgot to be cool to yourself, huh?" Kari teased.

What DO I want for myself? The human said I should let loose and just indulge in my powers, but when I actually stop and think about it, life's already cool enough that I'm not really looking for anything. Maybe this is why no one's got anything for me yet, she thought to herself. She started tapping her foot and turned to the sky. Tonight was cloudy, save for the two moons peeking through gaps in the grey. No wonder it was so chilly out, but hot inside. Then again… if I'm talking actually being true to myself and what I'm feeling…

She shifted and curled so that she was looking up at Kari. The Furret had gotten distracted by the sky too, and twitched with her usual peppy smile. For any other Pokémon, one would say something was wrong that was keeping her so jumpy. But to Kayla, she could tell Kari was the most relaxed she had seen her for a while. Relaxed and happy. That was what worked in this moment. They were both relaxed, happy, content, and that was all she wanted.

Dare I try? Kayla felt her heart speed up from just the thought. "Kari?"

"Yeah?"

Her heart beat even faster. What do I even say? How do I word this? Why the heck am I nervous?

"Are you alright?" Kari cocked her head.

"Y-yeah, j-just… ugh, the stammer doesn't help," she giggled at herself. "Can you like… maybe, uh…"

"Oh no, did I do something?" Kari stood up straight. "I'm sorry, if I did."

Kayla froze. "Y'know what? I dunno why I'm doing it this way, when I'm better at doing it this way."

With a short hop, then a bounce, she jumped into Kari's arms, surprising the Furret enough to yelp and fall over. That was what she wanted though, as she was able to sit on the grass and lean back into Kari's fur. That comfy warmth she got from the hug earlier came right back, and she relaxed. "There, just like that… uh-um, if it's not too much to ask, could you like… coil your tail?"

"Like this?" Kari whispered slowly, curling her tail around Kayla. She wrapped herself around the Buneary carefully so that only Kayla's head peeked out, letting her relax even more.

"Yeah, perfect," Kayla sighed, shutting her eyes. This felt far better than the dorm bed, and certainly better than any blanket she had used. If she could smother herself in this fluff, she would. Perhaps it was the instinct of wanting to nuzzle up to Lopunny fluff or something, something she never had. This was the next closest thing, and she was content with it. She could sleep like this, even knowing they had a perfectly good dormitory right there. Even her heart calmed and mind began to drift, returning only when she felt Kari's light touch on her belly, and she looked up at the Furret.

"S-sorry!" Kari retracted instantly. Her face was so red it was as if her fur colour had changed. "I-I-I er, do this all the time with the kids at the nursery… s-s-some of them like tummy scratches and stuff… f-force of ha-habit and all that!"

"Oh yeah, you're good at this carer stuff," Kayla relaxed again.

"G… g-g-guh… Kayla, are we, are you gonna," she squeaked, starting to breathe heavily as well.

"You okay?" that got Kayla to look up.

"S-sorry, I can't!" Kari screeched, and snaked back to her feet so suddenly Kayla fell right back. "We shouldn't- I mean, I shouldn't- I uh, erm—"

"Kari?" Kayla said, looking up at her in shock. Kari was still red, even more jittery than before, and this time, unable to look straight at her. And then she screamed at the top of her voice, enough to make Kayla cringe and roll down her ears, before bolting off back through their dorm. "Kari!"

By the time Kayla got to her feet and jumped back into the dorm, the Furret was nowhere to be seen, with the door still in motion as if it had hit the back wall. Kayla couldn't help but sit and stare a moment, and then sighed and hung her head. This is why I don't deal with this stuff. Good job Kayla, the biggest weirdo on the team is you.
