I would like to give you folks a couple of heads up, there are going to be some fourth wall breaks by Luis and Lucia in this story when I have the chance to put them in. Personally, I always thought that was my favorite gag. There will also be picking on other characters; mainly Luz, Eda, Amity and Boscha. Some of the comments might seem a little harsh, but if the situation calls for it, someone has to say them.
And I may be wrong about the Spanish translations, because that's what you get for using translator apps, sometimes they can be unreliable. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
And so without further ado, away we go!
A green-haired woman wearing a witch's outfit and holding a staff backflips onto a cliff before she grits her teeth and glares up at a large purple snake.
"Foolish child! I could swallow you whole!" The giant snake threatened her as he hisses.
"Do not underestimate me, Gildersnake, for I am the Good Witch Azura, warrior of peace!" The witch now known as Azura declared as the wind blew her hair. She then kneeled on one knee and held her staff like a bazooka. "Now eat this, sucka!" Azura fired fireballs from her staff at the Gildersnake.
"No! My only weakness! Dying!" The Gildersnake collapses with a thud.
In actuality, it was a reenactment with a doll of Azura and a green snake being held by a girl. She was Dominican-American, had tan skin, short dark brown hair in a pixie cut and hazel-brown eyes. She was wearing a half-indigo and half-white short-sleeve hoodie, dark leggings with jean high waist shorts over them and white slip-on shoes. This was Luz Noceda, "And that's the end."
She was also in the principal's office, where she was giving the presentation to the principal and her mother. She also had tan skin, with the same eyes behind a pair of glasses and her hair tied into a small bun. She was also wearing a medical scrubs uniform. This was Camila Noceda, her mother. "The end of what?"
"My book report." She answered as the snake hisses and bites the doll. "I think I knocked it out of the park."
"Yeah, I wouldn't go as far as to say that, sis." said a teenage boy who was sitting between Luz and another girl.
It was easy to tell that they were her older brother and sister. Like Luz, they looked to be Dominican-American with tan skin, matching eyes and hairstyles and color. Though there were some slight differences, such as both of them lacked Luz's baby face, the boy's pixie cut being spikier and the girl's having two big strands framing both sides of her face reaching just under her chin. Both also stood taller than Luz, with the boy's head hovering about two inches above the older girl's shoulders.
Luz's brother looked to be 15 years old and wore a navy blue flannel jacket with a gray hood attached. In addition, he had on black denim jeans with a wallet chain on his right side, and a pair of red sneakers with white soles, black highlights and laces. His jacket was unbuttoned by the top, revealing a maroon t-shirt and a necklace with a silver wolf pendant around his neck. Introducing, Luis Noceda.
Their big sister is 16 years old and wore an indigo beanie that covered everything but her strands and bangs in front of her hair. The rest of her clothing was a dark green shirt with a hood and long black sleeves with green stripes, a pair of dark blue jeggings with a tear on both knees, small black hoop earrings and indigo slip-on shoes with white soles. Ladies and gents, Lucia Noceda.
"From what we've heard, you scarred everyone in your class for life." The older sister said.
"Exactly why your book report is why you're in here." He gestures to the door, through which two students can be seen outside running by screaming, snakes biting their heads.
"Oh. That's where the backup snakes were." Luz said casually.
"Do we even want to know how you got that many snakes in school?" Lucia groaned as she rubbed the bridge between her eyes.
"And what were you going to do with this?" Camila asked her youngest child as she held up several firecrackers that were tied together.
Luz looked down sadly, "That was for the Act Three closer."
Camila bent down to hold her younger daughter's shoulder, "Mija, I love your creativity, but it's gotten out of hand. Do you remember why you were in the principal's office the last three times?"
Luz is seen on stage for a play audition for Romeo and Juliet, holding a spork. "O happy dagger, give me death!" Luz stabs the spork into her torso before tearing her dress, making several links of sausages fall out, and everyone else on stage runs away screaming.
In her art class, Luz is sewing a pigeon head onto a squirrel's body, on a platform labeled "baby griffin." "Now for the final anatomically correct touch, spider breath. When she opens the model's beak, many spiders crawl out, crawling over her, the table, and the class. People scream in terror, throwing objects everywhere.
Next was cheerleading tryouts, where the same girl with the hairstreak does a successful backflip, and other students applaud. "You think that's an impressive trick? Take a look at this." She throws her pom-poms to the side, turns around and back to reveal she flipped her eyelids inside out. "Bleep, bloop, bleep!" Everyone else screams and runs, and it sounds like at least one person is gagging.
"Gotta admit, I was both fascinated and repulsed by that last one." Luis spoke before he raised an eyebrow in confusion. "But why are we here?"
"You two here because you sent your fellow classmates to the nurse's office. Again," Principal Hal answered.
In geometry class, Luis is in class as all the students are conversing, socializing and getting their books out. Luis sat down on his seat, reading his textbook while listening to "Up 2 Speed" by Victor McKnight through wireless earbuds.
Suddenly, his focus is disturbed when he spots someone in trouble. A fellow student, who the class knew as Irving, found himself getting picked on by another student, who everyone knew as Paul. Luis, however, knew a little something more about him. Paul continued to push back Irving while he was holding up the student's book with a free hand. "Hey, knock it off! Give that back!"
Annoyed at this sight, Luis takes off his earbuds and begins to walk over, as the boy struggles to take his book back from Paul.
"It's mine! Give it you jerk!" Irving shouted.
"And what are you gonna do if I don't?" Paul mocked. He then felt someone poke his shoulder, and when he turned around, he was met with a geometry textbook to the face. He then fell back and held his face in pain, "Ugh! That was my face!"
Luis gives Irving his book back, "You good, Irving?" The boy nods before getting back to his seat.
"Not cool, Noceda." Paul got up, "We were just playing around. Not that it was any of your business."
"When someone is disrupting the peace, it becomes everyone else's business." Luis argued as he went on, "Besides, some of us are trying to study so we can avoid wasting three months in Summer School. But then again, some of us have a few too many failing grades already, isn't that right, Pauline?" Luis mocked him by exposing his real name.
"Oooooh!" The rest of the class laughed mockingly.
"Shut up! My Mom wanted a girl, okay?!" He exclaims in embarrassment.
"You're Mom could have ten girls for all I care," Luis told him. "Unlike you, we're actually willing to study to stay out of Summer School, because some of us have plans and jobs to go to. So I'm gonna give you this one chance to sit down, and keep your useless pie hole shut." His advice sounded more like a warning, "If I were you, I'd take it."
Luis turned back to go to his seat, but Paul was filled with anger, and threw a punch at the boy. Luis's instincts kicked in, and he grabbed Paul's fist with his back still turned.
"Okay," Luis sighs as he turns his head, "You probably shouldn't have done that." He punches Paul's face with the back of his fist, and gives a powerful roundhouse kick that sends Paul crashing into the whiteboard. Luis looks and shakes his head in disappointment. "Can't say I didn't warn him." He hears a loud gasp and turns to see his teacher by the doorway, shocked by the damage done. "Oh, crud."
Lucia was walking down the hall when she saw three of her classmates, two boys and a girl. Lucia was walking down the hall when she saw three of her classmates, two boys and a girl. The shorter boy was being pushed back by the taller one, who was trying to steal a kiss from the girl. Only two seconds of witnessing, she decided to walk towards them. She then grabbed the tall boy's arm, and started to twist behind his back.
"Ow!" He shouted before getting tossed to the ground. He then glared up at Lucia, who was responsible.
"Would you knock it off, and get to class already, Damian?" She was irritated by the guy's antics.
"What the heck's your problem, Noceda?" Damian asked, annoyed that she ruined the Moment.
"Oh, you mean besides braindead losers who can't take a hint of someone not being interested?" She asked rhetorically. "Briana, Aaron, you go on ahead."
"Thanks, Lucia," Briana said gratefully as they smiled and went off to class. "We owe you one."
"You proud of yourself?" Damian stood up, annoyed by her interference, "You ruined a good thing that was going on."
"The only thing going on was that you need to brush up on Body Language 101." Lucia crossed her arms as he scowled, "Hers said, 'Never in this lifetime.'" She quipped.
"Funny," Damian laughed playfully before throwing a punch that she caught with ease. Her grip tightened, and he winced in pain, "Ow! Ow, ow, ow, ow!"
"You know, I was in a good mood before I saw you," She looked down at him as he got to his knees. "But, I'm in a forgiving mood, and I'm giving you the option of knowing when to back off from now on."
"What are you going to do about it, toss me out a window?"
Outside, some teachers were walking by when suddenly they heard something fall into the dumpster. Startled, they looked to see that something was Damian in a daze from the fall and covered in garbage.
"'What are what are you going to do about it, toss me out a window?'" Luis mocked. "Idiota."
"I signed you two up for kung fu lessons so you could protect each other, not act like vigilantes." Camila sighed, "I begged your principal not to, but he and your teachers suggested that you two be sent to Bunker Hill Academy." She held a pamphlet for the academy.
"Wait, Bunker Hill? That's a…" Lucia was cut off by her Mom and principal.
"Military School." They finished.
"Whose lame idea was that?" Luis pointed at the brochure.
"It was actually recommended by one of the victims you two sent to the nurse's office." Principal Hal answered, "Make no mistake. You two are good students, but your habit of lashing out on others is a problem; despite them having it coming."
"There is the option of where we were going to send Luz." Camila brought up a pamphlet addressing it to all three of her children. "We all love that you express yourself just as much as Luis and Lucia are willing to stand up for others, but if you can't learn to separate fantasy from reality or if you two can't keep your hostility in check, you may need to spend the summer here."
"'Reality Check Summer Camp. Think Inside the Box.'" Lucia reads as Luz takes it. Then she gave a blank expression, "If it comes down to the choice, I'll take neither. Luis?"
"Military School or Summer camp? Tough call." He pretended to give serious thought, "But I'm going with the latter."
"Well, it's not coming to that. Don't worry, Mom. We won't let you down. No more weirdness! And no hostility!" When she stands triumphantly, the snake in her hand suddenly jumps out and bites the principal. He falls to the ground with a yell while the snake hisses. "That doesn't count, right?" Her siblings facepalmed themselves.
The three of them were standing in front of their house with a depressed Luz holding a satchel, Lucia and Luis had their own backpacks with the latter having a skateboard attached to the straps on his. It was a blue and black cruiser skateboard with a yin-yang design on the bottom.
"I'm gonna go with, yes," Lucia said with a dry expression.
"What are you talking about?" Luz asked.
"Oh, I think she was answering how the principal getting attacked by one of your snakes counts as your typical weirdness," Luis answered as his hands were in his jacket pockets.
"But I asked that question the other day." Luz raised an eyebrow in confusion.
"Yeah, but this scene felt right for the people." Lucia gestured at everyone watching. Luz however looked where she was, but didn't see anything or anyone.
"Who are these people you're talking about? And where are you looking at?" Luz was really confused.
"Probably best that you don't question it." The eldest replied, "Trust me. What grasp you have on reality is better off if you don't think about it."
Just then, three teens, two boys on skateboards and a girl with roller skates, came by. Luis smiled as they took off their helmets. "'Sup, Dante. Hey, M n' M."
The first boy's board was a carving longboard colored gray with white wheels. His name was Dante Mitchell, and he has been Luis's best friend since 4th grade. He is a boy who is half an inch as Luis and has brown skin and eyes, black hair in a high-top Afro fade(4c), and stud earrings. His attire consisted of a black sleeveless jacket over a dark red long-sleeve shirt with white hems, dark blue baggy jeans, and white high tops.
M n' M, whom he met on his first day of middle school when they first moved to town, were twins with fair skin, ash blonde hair, and green eyes. Their names are Malvin and Melina Terrace, but other than M n' M, some would call them Mal and Mel. The older twin, Malvin, stood roughly the same height as Luis had a skateboard that was black surfskate with red wheels and his hair was short and choppy. He wore a black baseball cap with a gray visor that was placed backwards with a tuft of hair sticking out of its closure. The rest of his clothes consisted of a dark red unbuttoned short-sleeve overshirt to reveal a black shirt with long sleeves, olive green cargo pants, and dark blue converse. His younger sister, Melina, was shorter than her brother and Luis by one inch. She had her hair tied in a low ponytail and white earrings. For clothing, she wore a white t-shirt with long purple sleeves with white stripes, a magenta jacket tied around her waist, a jean miniskirt, black leggings, and red and white checkered sneakers strapped to portable roller skates with two purple wheels on both skate plates.
"Hey, Luis." Dante greeted him with a one-arm hug before getting to why they were at their house, "We heard what's happened. Sorry, you and your sisters were sent to summer camp."
"Don't remind us," Luis groaned, knowing if he and Lucia didn't go along with this, they would go to reform school. "I know it's not ideal for some to spend summer, but anything beats spending the rest of our high school days at Military School."
"Well, if it makes you feel better, our vacation isn't going off on a stellar start as we thought, either." Dante said because their crew's summer vacation isn't going to be as enjoyable as he'd hoped, "With you gone, someone's gotta fill in for your shift at the theater until you get back."
"And at least you're going to keep yourself extra busy, and you're going out of town on something that's kind of an adventure," Malvin complained to Dante and Luis respectively. "Our parents are going to the Bahamas for their anniversary."
"But do we get an adventure?" Mel asked rhetorically, "No, of course not. The start of our summer vacation is spending the next week at our great aunt Carol's with her toe fungus."
"Ugh," Luis cringed at what the twins will be doing for the next few days. He then sighed and shook his head, "On second thought, maybe summer camp won't be so bad. It's better than picturing that in my head."
"Speaking of plans," Luz recalled as she turned to her sister, "Didn't you have some about traveling with your friends around the country for her dad for being picked to write the travel column for his job?"
Lucia saw something approaching behind Luis's crew, "Why don't you see for yourself."
Just then, a luxury RV came up in front of them, and they stood in marvel. It was silver with cyan-blue horizontal stripes and was moderately sized with a cabin on the top and three antennae on the roof.
Out of the camper steps a teenage girl who was the same age and height as Lucia. She had brown skin, dark brown shoulder-length hair, hazel eyes, red earrings, and a black studded wristband on her left wrist. She was wearing a green vest over a yellow shirt, magenta capri pants, and black flats. This was Lucia's best friend since 3rd grade, Zoey Willis.
Behind her was a sixteen-year-old boy who's known them since the 8th grade. The boy was taller by a couple of inches, and he had fair skin, short, straight black hair, blue eyes, and accessorized with a circle necklace around his neck. For clothes, he wore a charcoal short-sleeve hooded jacket over a white v-neck, a pair of blue jeans, and white sneakers with red highlights. This was Kyler Martin.
"Hey, everyone." Zoey greeted.
"Z! Ky!" Lucia hugged her friends, "Glad you two could make it."
"Yeah, but sorry you couldn't come with us for my dad's travel article." Zoey apologized to her.
"Eh… it's nothing to worry too much about." She shrugged to her friends, "It's not like we had much of a choice. No big deal."
Luz knew that wasn't true. Lucia has been looking forward to this trip for weeks, and she can't help but feel a little guilty for having part in ruining it for her. So she decides to focus on the RV.
"So," Luz clears her throat, "The RV your dad will be driving is nice."
"I'll say," Kyler agreed as he looked back at the luxury vehicle, "Her dad's boss really knows how to get her writers what they need to get their job done."
"All expenses paid, touring around the country to see the sights in this baby. We'll only be out of town for about two months." Zoey then looked at Lucia in a sad expression, "Really wish you didn't have to go to prison camp."
"Eh…" She just shrugged trying to be as optimistic as possible, "I'm sure it won't be that bad."
Just then, Camila exits the house, and sees the kids talking to her children, "Oh, what's everyone doing here?"
"Hiya, Mrs. N!" Mal politely greets her, "We were just stopping by to wish them a great summer before they left for camp."
Camila then noticed the camper in front, "Wow, Zoey, is this what your father is driving for his article?"
"That's right," She confirmed, "It's really a shame that Lucia's not coming with us."
"I told you, it's not that big a deal. I'm sure we can have just as much at camp." She tried to assure that even if she'd miss out on a cool road trip, she'd still have fun over the summer with her family.
"If you say so." Kyler and Zoey hugged Lucia and went back into the RV, "You guys have a great summer."
"Yeah, we gotta get to our first stop before the deadline," Zoey began to walk in the vehicle door. "See ya, Lucia."
"Yeah, we gotta go too," Dante, Mal, and Mel turned and were about to head out. "I gotta get ready for work in a few minutes." He gives Luis a fist bump.
"You three take it easy." Mel advised them as she and the boys rolled out as Luis waved goodbye.
"See ya when we get back," He shouted to his friends.
"Oh, my babies!" She gave the three of them a hug, and it was not returned by only Luz, who was still depressed. "Now, don't worry. Summer camp is only going to be for three months," She assured them that it won't be as bad as they think. "You'll be so busy balancing checkbooks and learning to...appreciate public radio, the time will fly by."
"But we don't like any of that stuff," Luz pointed out to her. "I like editing anime clips to music and reading fantasy books with convoluted backstories," She explains, taking out a book from her Good Witch Azura book.
"And I'm more into martial arts, skateboarding and would welcome any action and adventure in my life," Luis added in his piece.
"And I'm more into the pursuit of the arts, but I'm more interested in fashion," Lucia finished for them.
"I know you'd do anything to protect and support each other, but just think of the example you'll set for Luz if you gave this a chance." Camila said to Luis and Lucia before turning to her youngest daughter, "Mija, your fantasy world is holding you back. Do you have any friends?" She asked and the kids looked down in depression for the youngest child, "Real ones that she's made on her own without the aid of your brother or sister? And ones that aren't imagined or drawn or reptilian? And the kind of support their friends gave them, don't you want that in your life?" The kind Luz sees Camila's point and she walks slowly over to the trash bin. "Your hermanos aren't going to be around forever. Summer camp is a chance to make some friends, but you have to try. Can you do that?"
"Yes, Mom." Luz puts her book in the garbage.
Camila's phone vibrates, "Oh. I gotta go to work." She gave a kiss to Luis and Luz's foreheads and Lucia's cheek. "Your bus is coming soon. Text me when you get there. Cuídate mucho, mis hijos. Qué te vaya bien! (Take care of yourself, my children. Have a nice day!)"
"Lo prometemos, nos cuidaremos el uno al otro, mamá. (We promise, we'll look after each other, Mom.)" Luis told her, and kissed Camila's cheek. "Have a good day at work."
"We'll let you know how our day was once we've settled in. Cuídate, mamá. (Take care, Mom.)" Lucia kissed her Mom before she left.
"Bye, Mom," Once Luz saw Camila was out of sight, she rummaged through the garbage bin to find her book. "Where is it? Where is it?"
"She's got a problem," Luis stated dryly.
Just then they heard an owl hoot, and looked to see a little owl with a trash bag in its beak. her book sticking out of the bag in his beak. It then turns and flies away.
"Tiny trash thief!" Luz chased after it.
"Luz!" Lucia shouted as she and Luis chased after her.
Luz paused as siblings caught up to her. They reached a decrepit abandoned house, but the owl continued to hop inside. Luz stares at the house in hesitation but lets out a determined growl, and steeled her nerves, Luz runs inside followed by her brother and sister. The front door slams shut behind them, and the entire inside glows.
On the inside of what looks like a tent, a door with a large yellow eye unfolds in three parts before opening. The little owl hops through it, followed by the Nocedas.
"Stop adorably hopping away, you…Huh?" They look around the tent, which is full of old odds and ends. "Whoa. I thought I had a lot of weird stuff," She picks up a creepy-looking doll. But this? This is…" She trailed off.
"A dump?" Lucia guessed.
"The stuff of nightmares?" Luis followed up.
"I was gonna say 'impressive.'" Luz corrected.
"Finally, you're back," A woman's voice spoke up as the doll was moving its arms around. Luz ducked as the other two moved to the entrance. Luz follows and they open flaps to see they were in a marketplace, with other tents and stalls. In front of them was a tall, elderly-looking woman wearing a sleeveless two-tone maroon dress with a ripped-like hem design, gray leggings, and maroon high-heeled boots. She had ivory skin, her untamed hair was thick, long, and layered with two tones of gray with a green bandana with white polka dots covering her ears, and her orange nails were claw-like. The owl was resting on the table in front of her, placing down the bag. "Now, let's see what we've got here."
The little owl lands on top of the woman's staff and she turns it around, and it becomes a wooden fixture of the staff, causing the kids to gasp.
The woman took the back and started looking through it, holding up an iPhone, "Garbage," She tossed it to the side and held up a wedding that had a diamond on top. "Garbage," She tossed it again and held up a glowing gold chalice. "Garbage." She gasped at the next item and placed it over her face. "Now, this…" She turns to reveal she was wearing a pair of prop glasses that fell down as they were connected to slinkys revealing her golden eyes, along with maroon lips and a golden fang. "This will make me rich."
"A phone, a ring, and a golden chalice are viewed as junk, but those things are gonna bring in cash?" Lucia asked in a whispered tone to her younger siblings, "Call it a presumption, but I'm thinking this lady might have a few screws loose."
Next, she takes out Luz's book. "And this... Eh, this'll make good kindling." She held the book to a candle. It started catching fire, causing Luz to gasp.
She leaped out of the tent to snatch her book back, surprising the woman, "Excuse me, sorry, it's mine, thank you." Luz runs back into the tent and the three head for the door. It folds up before she can walk through it and disappears.
It is revealed to be because of the woman holding a key with an eye on it, the same eye that was on the door. "You three aren't going anywhere."
"Oh, yeah? Watch us!" Luis dared as he lifted the tent for them to escape as Luz shoved her book in her bag.
The three start running only to skid to a stop mere inches away from falling off a cliff. They were clearly no longer on Earth, let alone in their hometown. The town before them was being made up of far too many arms and teeth. A dragon flies by and is caught by one of said arms. Denizens of the town are going about their days. A cloaked figure holding an ice cream cone which eats someone, the legs of what appears to be a giant chicken, and a centipede-looking creature opens its mouth to let a winged creature fly out. The latter two kiss before going their separate ways.
"Dios mío." Lucia said in shock as they stepped back, "We are definitely not in Connecticut anymore."
"Oh, no, no, no, no! What's going on?" Luz shrieks as a fairy approaches her. "Oh, hello, little fairy. Are you going to tell us this is all a fantastical dream?"
"Give me your skin!" The fairy reveals having huge teeth as she moves closer.
"Nope!" Luis exclaims as he punches the fairy. "All the nopes!"
"Where are we? Did we die?" Luz questioned in a panic. "Are we in the bad place?" She grimaced at the thought.
"Why is that your first thought?" Lucia questioned in bewilderment at her sister. Then she felt a hand touch her shoulder. It was revealed to be the woman from earlier.
"You wish—" Lucia grabbed the woman's wrist, and jabs her stomach with her elbow. Lucia then tossed her over her shoulder to the ground opposite of the cliff, "Ow!" She clutched her stomach as she was in a lot of pain.
"Sorry about that. Reflex," Lucia apologized before recalling what the woman just said, "But why would anyone wish that?"
"Not important." The woman rubbed her wrist as she got back up, "What is important, is you kids are coming with me."
"Oh, yeah?" Lucia challenged, placing her hands on her hips, "Who says?"
"The way I see it, you three have two choices," She lowered her eyelids at the trio, "Come with me, or…" She trailed off looking off into the distance towards the town. The kids did the same, and they knew they'd rather go with her than take their chances. So instead of running, they followed her to her tent.
Then the three sat down on stools, "I'm so sorry! My sister didn't mean to hurt you!" Luz panicked, hugging her knees. "She was protecting us, and I just wanted my book!" She then offers her arm and closes her eyes. "If you're gonna eat my skin, just make it quick! Just do it now!"
"You wanna eat us, you're gonna have to fight us first," Luis challenged the old market seller.
"Eat you? Why would I eat...three potential customers?" The three dropped their guards upon looking at her sign that read 'Human Collectables'. There also was a bunch of random stuff stacked on her shelves that she was trying to sell to others. The first trinket she offered was a green croc, "Can I offer you a human foot filled with holes?" She then puts it aside and grabs a stick of deodorant. "A bar of green human candy? Oh, oh! How about this black shadow box that reflects only sadness?" The last thing was a portable TV, reflecting the trio.
The three glanced at each other and laughed because this woman was clearly no threat to them. "Okay, not exactly sure where to begin with all that." Luis chuckled, as the woman's stared in confusion.
"I guess, in order, that hole-filled human foot is actually half a croc," Luz pointed at the footwear.
"That 'bar of green human candy' you're licking is called 'deodorant,' which is used to reduce sweating when people rub them on their armpits." The saleswoman stopped licking and widened her eyes at Luis's intel. She then spat randomly to get the taste of her mouth.
"And this..." Lucia took TV from her, "Well, let's just show ya," She then grabbed two batteries from a dish labeled 'Human candy,' and puts them in. When she presses the power button, a jazzercise video starts playing with loud music. "Voilà!"
The attention of several other customers and vendors was then caught by it, "Huh?"
"What's that?" Another monster asked in puzzlement.
"The sound, it's so alluring."
Several monsters are now crowded around the TV in front of the stand. One holds up their money to the woman. "I'll pay 40 snails for the screaming box!"
"I'll pay a hundred!" Another shouted their offer.
"Can I eat the tiny person inside?"
The whole crowd started bidding, and the woman couldn't help but be impressed. She looks at the kids, "What did you say your names were?"
Luz introduced themselves, "We're the Nocedas. I'm Luz. This cool guy is my brother, Luis."
"Hiya." Luis greeted with his hands pocketed.
Luz gestured her hand to the final member, "And last and certainly never least, our older sister who tossed you over her shoulder, Lucia."
"'Sup?" She greeted her with a finger gun. "And again, sorry about that."
"Don't worry about it. You're tough and you got spunk, I like that," She complimented as she was taking people's money. "And I have to say Luz, Luis, and Lucia, that was pretty clever...for a trio of humans."
"That's kind of a weird thing for another human to say," Luz quirked an eyebrow in amusement.
"Oh, dear child," She takes off her bandana to reveal pointed ears. "I'm not like any of you." She then stood on top of the table. "I'm Eda the Owl Lady, the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles!" The woman now known as Eda the witch declared.
"A witch?" Luz questioned as her brother just stared.
"Funny, with those ears, my first thought would have been 'elf,'" Lucia quipped.
"That's funny, but go comparing me with those overzealous crackpots," She then continued her dramatic introduction, "For I am a respected, feared—"
"Busted!" Interjected a gruff voice before a fist breaks the TV starting everyone.
"Run! It's a guard!" All of the customers scattered from the stand away as Eda hops down from the table.
Before her stood a large, buff human-like creature, wearing dark and white garments with a metal cone face mask. The only thing visible was the eyes that were glaring at Eda.
"Eda the Owl Lady, you are wanted for misuse of magic and demonic misdemeanors," The guard held up a wanted poster of Eda, depicting her in an evil way with a furry creature in front of her.
"Whoa!" Luz said in disbelief and looked up at Eda, "Witch criminal!"
He grabs Eda's arm. "You are hereby ordered to come with me to the Conformatorium." Eda snatched her arm back.
"Would you guys quit following me around?" She crosses her arms, "I haven't done squat."
"And you three are coming too…" Luz exclaimed as he picked her and Lucia up by their hoods and grabbed Luis's arm, "For fraternizing with a criminal."
"Wh-What?" Luz hugs herself, "That's not cool!"
"That is all kinds of uncool!" The older sister said. She then tried to reason with the guard, "Listen, sir, we didn't do anything! We had no idea she was a wanted criminal."
"Yeah," Luis agreed, "In fact, we just met this broad." He pointed his thumb at Eda, who widened her eyes at the boy as he continued. "So why don't you let the three of us go, and we'll be on our way."
"Not happening," The guard denied.
"Okay, let me rephrase that for you," He looks at the guard more seriously. "Let the three of us go, or else."
The guard just scoffs, "Is this the part where I'm supposed to say, 'Or else what?'"
"Actually…yeah," Luis flips over the guard to twist his arm, causing him to yelp in pain, and release Luz and Lucia. Once his sisters are freed, Luis flips on the table and lands on his hands with his feet reeling back before launching them forward, giving a double kick to the guard's face, causing him to fly back on the ground. "He should've taken my first offer."
Eda whistled, "I like the spunk from you two." She spins her staff and taps the bottom of it on the table, making all her stuff float in midair. Lucia helps Luz up as she holds her book, "Whoops. Can't forget this." Eda reaches into her hair and pulls out the key, pressing the eye to summon the portal door. She closes her hand into a fist, making the tablecloth wrap itself around all of her stuff, sticks her staff through the bundle, and starts running. "Follow me, humans!" Not having any other choice, the trio does so as the guard gets up.
"This is crazy. If any of us die here, Mom's gonna kill us!" Luz panicked at the thought, causing her siblings to worry.
"Ha! I won't let 'em hurt you." Eda assured, then looked at the older two, "Course, after those moves your brother and sister pulled, I'd be a little more worried for the guards." She said. "Besides, humans like you are much more valuable to me alive than dead."
"I feel like I should be questioning that," Lucia raised a suspicious eyebrow.
"Yeah. What's that supposed to—" Luz was interrupted as Eda hooked her arm around the kids and jumped as they got on her staff. They took off into the sky as the guard caught up.
"You won't get away with this, Owl Lady!" He declared, shaking his fist. He then pauses for a moment, "Oh, all right. You did," He said looking down at his hands. "You got away with it. She got away with it, everyone!" He spreads his arms, exclaiming to no one around him. That said, with no more business around him, he walks away in defeat, "Typical."
The human trio had their eyes tightly shut while flying on Eda's staff. "You can open your eyes now, humans."
They do so and realize they are sitting on the staff from oldest to youngest, with Luz up front. Said girl yells and nearly falls off the staff when she sees the ground below them.
"You good?" Luis asked her.
"Yeah, just…having trouble processing all of this," She assured as she was hanging on for dear life. "Flying staffs, crazy monsters, the crazier lady behind us is a witch!"
"Hey! I'm right here," Eda remarked.
"Sorry. But what is this place?" She asked the Owl Lady as her brother picked her up and straightened her out.
"This is the Boiling Isles," She explained to them, "Every myth you humans have is caused by a little of our world leaking into yours." Among the various flying creatures, a griffin, extremely similar to the one Luz made at school, flies up next to them and screeches.
"A griffin!" Luz smiled up at it as the griffin barfs spiders. And she points in excitement, "I knew it!"
"I'm impressed, as well as disgusted," Lucia cringed at the cluster of spiders.
"Yep. Griffins, vampires, giraffes…" The last one Eda counted confused the humans.
"Giraffes?" They said in unison.
"Oh, yeah. We banished those guys," The four landed in an opening in the forest. "Bunch of freaks." Eda hops off, and Lucia and Luis follow as Luz stays on.
"So many questions about that, not entirely sure where to start." The former raised a brow at the younger duo.
Upon looking down, they notice Eda's hand still gripping the staff and witness it moving on its own. This startled the three, making Luz jump off the staff.
"Oops," Eda grabs her hand and screws it back on, "That happens sometimes."
"You may want to get that looked at," Luis looked at her arm.
"And I think we've had enough adventure for today." Lucia smiled as friendly as possible, still shaken over their most recent escapade, "Fun's fun, but it's best to stop before things escalate out of control."
"Agreed," Luz popped up to add her thoughts, "Especially since this is clearly not the PG fantasy world I always dreamed about." She walks in front of Eda before turning to her, "So, can you help us get back home?"
Eda levels her staff in front of Luz, startling her. "Only if you three help me first," She chuckles and walks off with her sack floating behind her. "Now, come along, humans."
Luz looks where Eda is headed and the other two marvel at the sight, "Whoa."
On top of a tower, an owl with an uncanny human face cackles and flies down to reveal the rest of Eda's home. It was a white brick cottage with a sloping blue roof, and a stained-glass window above the door that gave the impression of a large demonic eye, and next to the house was a crumbling stone tower with orange moss growing on it.
"Aren't you worried about those guards finding this place?" Luis asked as he pocketed his hands and looked back with his sisters.
"Nope," Eda dismissed any worries they had, "My house has a state-of-the-art defense system."
"Hoot-hoot!" Said defense system was her house's door knocker with the face of an owl. It just happened to be alive, because of course it was, "Password, please!" Eda pokes both of his eyes causing him to yelp in pain.
"We got no time for this, Hooty." She told Hooty in annoyance, "Let us in."
"All right, all right! Geez!" The door monster now called Hooty was just as annoyed at her. "You never want to have any fun! Ow! Hoot!"
Hooty opens his mouth wide enough to completely cover the door, allowing the four to step through, though Eda's bag stays outside. Hooty closes his mouth and burps.
Inside, the room was pitch black, "Welcome to…" Eda snaps her fingers, "The Owl House." Candles in the room were ignited, a fire in the fireplace started, a cauldron started stirring itself, a broom started sweeping the floor, and the ceiling began to glow overhead revealing an owl beast mural. The sight of all this made the three teens look around them in awe. "Where I hide away from the pressures of modern life. Also the cops. Mm, also ex-boyfriends." She snorts at the last part.
"This place is beautiful!" Luz marveled as she put her book on the coffee table.
"I'll say," Luis agreed as he placed his board on the wall and stared at the mural above.
Lucia looks at Eda, "Do you live here all alone?"
Thudding footsteps were then felt as they shook the house. Eda crossed her arms knowingly, "Actually, I have a roommate."
"Who dares intrude upon I, the king of demons?" A deep voice that later sounded more high pitched and squeaky reveals the 'king of demons' to be no threat as he was a magical canine creature with mostly dark gray fur, three fingers and two toes that looked like white claws, excluding his thumbs. He wore a red collar with a yellow tag and had pink eyes with yellow scleras. The highlight of his appearance was a skull, with a broken horn attached to his head that hid his mouth.
The appearance of this small creature made Luz gasp for joy with shining eyes, "Ay, que lindo! (Oh, how cute!)" She exclaimed as she scooped him up in a hug. "Eda, he's so cute! Who's a widdle guy? Who's a widdle guy? Is it you? Is it you?"
"No! I don't know who your little guy is!" He exclaims trying to get free "Eda, who is this monster?" He was rescued by Lucia, who pulled her sister by the hood. "Thanks," Then he looks up at the trio, "Wait, why are there three of them?!"
"Oh, this is Luz, Luis, and Lucia, the humans," Eda introduced them to the small creature. "They're here to help us with our little...situation."
"Oh. Hooray!" The small creature was now welcoming to them.
Lucia intervened, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, pasty wrinkles!" Eda quirked an eyebrow at her for the nickname, "Who says that we're helping you with anything?"
"Yeah, call me skeptic here," Luis had his arms crossed as he pointed to the accused individuals, "But between a witch criminal and a supposed king of demons, I'm not so sure about wanting to hear about this 'situation.'" He ended in quotes.
"Just...let me explain," Eda twirled both her hands into a golden flame circle. Then it gave them images of a vicious monster as she began explaining, "King was once a mighty king of demons, until his crown of power was stolen, and he became...this."
"You mean this little bundle of joy?" Luz asked as she hugged him.
"The crown is being held by the evil Warden Wrath and locked away behind a magical force field that only a human can break through. Humans like the three of you!" They continued staring at her as the flashback disappeared. "If you three help us retrieve his crown, we'll send you back to your realm. So what do you say?" She asked before picking him up by his cheeks, "Plus, who could say no to this cute face?"
"No! Please don't encourage her!" He begged as Eda dropped him. "Nyeh!"
"I mean, we're kinda your only way home." She pointed out.
"Actually, that portal door is our way home," Luis spoke to Eda. "We just need to get the key."
Eda laughs and then snorts, "And how exactly do you plan to—" She tries to take the key out of her hair, but couldn't find it. "Where's the key?"
"You lost the key?" King asked in shock, "Don't tell me you dropped it."
"Nah," Luis took the key out of his pocket and presented it to them, "But you might want to keep this on tighter wraps. Things to think about while the three of us head home and…" Luis was interrupted when felt a tug on his sleeve. He looked to see Luz pulling it, "Oh, don't say it."
"We have to help them."
"So, she says it," Her brother says in exasperation, "And I retort: No, we don't! And if we do, why?" He asks in disbelief.
"Because, as much as I want to leave, it's the right thing to do to help others who need it," Luz told him.
"True, but on the flip side," Luis brought up an important point for her, "If this crown is supposed to give its wearer powers, why hasn't the 'evil' Warden Wrath used it for himself?"
"Maybe it needs some sacred incantation or something to get it to work. Can you just roll with it?" Luz suggested before she looked more concerned, "Besides, it's not like she's not going to give that door just because we have the key."
"Hmm..." Luis thought for a moment before turning to a quiet Lucia, "What's your take on this, Lucia?"
"Honestly, you're both right," Lucia spoke to the middle child, "On one hand, I don't want to be involved in something that'll prove to be a waste of time. On the other, they'll give us what we want, so the least we can do is help them get what they want. Besides, if anything happens, we could use them as decoys."
"Lucia!" Luz scolded her big sis.
"What?" Lucia felt no remorse for what she described them. "It's better than calling them 'bait'."
"Why are they talking about us like we're not here?" King asked Eda, who shrugged not having a clue.
"Alright, we'll help," Luz addressed the duo.
"Great!" Eda placed Luz over her shoulder and walked to the door, with the siblings following, "Now, we've got no time to lose."
King picks up his rubber duck, "Soon, Mr. Ducky, we shall drink the fear of those who mocked us," He declared running after the four.
Luz looked up at Eda, "Where are we going?"
"Somewhere super fun."
"Why do I get the feeling I'm not going like your definition of fun?" Luis asked the elderly woman.
Luis was looking up with a dry expression, "Because I was right."
Eda had taken the Noceda trio to a large castle-like building that was suspended in the air surrounded by large walls and most of its windows blocked by metal bars.
"Did you really just wait for us to come here so you could answer a random question, again?" Luz asked.
"It felt apt," Luis shrugged, "I can be really patient when I want until the moment is just right."
"But we've been flying over here for, like, twenty minutes." King also felt confused as he was on his shoulder.
"Yeah, but just imagine how funny it would be if you were a character continuing their line from a different scene while being completely oblivious to an outside observer watching pieces of a previous conversation," Lucia explained to the small demon. Then she winked at the fourth wall, causing Eda and King to look where she was staring at, but saw nothing.
"Should we be concerned about that?" Eda asked the youngest child, "What is she talking about, and who is she winking to?"
"I honestly have no idea." Luz told the woman honestly.
"Anyway, kids," Eda points her staff towards the building, "This is the Conformatorium, a place for those considered unsuitable for society."
"So on the first day in a different world, we team up with a pair of degenerates to break into a prison and steal a crown so they can send us home," Luis had his hands in his jacket pockets as he looked up at the building, "Great." He rolls his eyes.
"You're all gloom and doom, aren't ya?" Eda asked, causing him to swivel his hand from side to side.
Luz looks at the wall in front of her and takes off a wanted poster of Eda, "Whoa. These guys really have the hots for you."
"Whoa, look at those zeros!" Lucia looks over Luz's shoulder, "With a bounty this high, everyone should be charging at your doorstep. How have you not been caught yet?"
Eda stood in front winking at them, "We were never caught because we're too slippery."
"Try to catch me when I'm covered in grease. I'm a squirmy little fella," King lost his balance and fell off of Luis's shoulder. "The four of us will sneak up to the top of the tower, where they're holding my crown." He explained as Eda stood next to him.
"And I'm gonna make sure the warden's distracted."
Luz gasped in excitement, "Will we need disguises?"
"Uh…" Eda glances away awkwardly.
"I've been waiting to use this. Hoods up," They pull their hoods on. The other two were normal and Luz flicks up cat ears on hers. "Meow, meow."
King looked up at her, "It's hideous."
"I made her that as a gift," Lucia glared at the small demon, and he flinched.
"I meant that as a compliment?"
"Oh, you'll fit right in." Eda taps the bottom of her staff against the ground and steps away as she creates a glowing platform under the four. "Hang on tight."
The four were surprised as it lifted them off the ground, carrying them over to a window, where it dropped as soon as they reached it. Lucia managed to grab the window sill as Luis and Luz hugged her waist and King clung to Luz's feet.
Meanwhile, Eda tosses her staff and casually sits down on it as it flies by. "Meet you guys at the top of the tower." She says as she flies away.
King was first to climb up to the window and into the window. Following him were the three human kids, who climbed each other one by one and pulled through the window. Luz was first to climb through only to slip and fall on her face.
"Ha-ha! Cat's don't do that." King mocked her as Luis climbed up and pulled Lucia in.
The three looked in awe at the amount of prison cells before them, all of them occupied by shadowy beasts of varying shapes and sizes, though all of their eyes glowed in the light.
"Hey, cat lady and street hoodlums," Their attention is brought to a lady standing in a cell with her arms crossed. She had pointy ears, dark skin, black hair in a ponytail, upturned hazel eyes, and notorious fangs. She wore a purple dress that showed off her shoulders and her sleeves reaching half her forearms, calf-length blue-gray high-heeled boots, and accessorized with a gold choker. "How'd you get out of your cells?"
"We're the hoodlums, says the lady in a prison cell," Luis snarked as he and Lucia let down their hoods.
"More importantly, I'm not a cat." Luz corrected the inmate as she pulled her hood down, "Also, we're not criminals."
"Not yet, you're not." King grinned at her.
"Shut up, King," Luis said annoyed by how that wasn't helping. "Like my sister said, we're not criminals. Sorry for dropping in unannounced, miss… What's your name?"
"You can call me Katya," She introduced herself, "And we're not criminals, either. The stupid warden likes to lock people up who don't fit in. Like, I write fanfics of food falling in love," She explained as she pulled out a book of said fanfiction. "I like food, I like love... Just let me write about it."
"Hey, that actually sounds interesting," Lucia admitted as she looked at the pages. "Since we're sharing, I'm writing a story based on a girl being sent to a strange new world. The OC is a brother I made for her, and they try to find a way back home while having some personal growth on the way."
"Ooh," Katya sounded very interested in a story about characters having mystical adventures while finding self-discovery.
"I'm here because I like eating my own eyes." Another prisoner explained as he plucked an eye out of his head and ate it. The eye pops back into its socket.
"We are agents of fwee expwession!" Said a lisp coming from a small round prisoner with blueish eyes with yellow sclera. She also had reddish hair, no body with tiny limbs coming from her head, and a prominent nose. "They will never siwence us!"
"And what's her schtick?" Lucia points to the tiny-nosed creature.
"That's Tinella Nosa," Katya introduced with a pointed thumb, "She's really big into conspiracy theories." She rolled her eyes.
"The world is a simulation! We are but playthings for a higher being!" Tinella continued her rambling.
Luz felt some sympathy towards these people, "Wait. These aren't crimes. None of you actually did anything wrong."
"Now it makes more sense why Eda was never caught," Lucia spoke in agreement with her kid sister, "The coppers here arrest other people for the slightest whims out of having no real business capturing actual criminals." Katya sucked her teeth as she looked around seeing her point.
Luz realized something else and pulls out Eda's wanted poster, "You're all just a bunch of weirdos. Like me."
"No one should be allowed to be locked up for being themselves." Luis looked at them in empathy, "Whether it's having strange hobbies or bizarre traits, you're just being you. That shouldn't be a crime!"
Then, all of the sudden, the room started shaking at the sound of thudding footsteps coming their way.
"It's Warden Wrath!" Katya looked at the door before turning to the four, "Hide!"
Luz dropped the poster and exclaims as she looked around before Lucia pulled into an open cell and Luis followed them pulling the door down before they went deeper inside.
The footsteps continued until a door was pushed open by Warden Wrath, who is revealed to be a large, muscular creature. He wore a hood that was non-standard for a guard and a mask with yellow button-like lenses, resembling a medieval plague doctor. He wore a white sleeveless tunic with brass buttons and triangular badge, a leather belt with a brass buckle, and black trousers with the bottoms tucked into dark purple shoes.
"I can hear you." He warned them.
Luz whimpers as she holds King and Lucia, the latter holding a hand to her sister's mouth, and the four looking at the warden. "Holy, crud." Luis wheezed out, "That dude is freakin' huge!"
Wrath continued stomping forward in front of the cells. "Just what are you fools whispering about?" He asked suspiciously before looking down at Eda's wanted poster that Luz had dropped. "Ah. The Owl Lady." He picks up the poster and crumples it with a grunt and shifts his his fist into a hammer and slamming it into the door of the Nocedas' cell. "I'll get my hands on her soon enough." The demonic warden looks into the cell, where the four were still huddled in the corner.
"Fight against the oppwessor!" Tinella cried out, getting their attention, "We will wesist!" Wrath walks over to her cell. "We will conquer! We will never be afwaid of you, you old cweep!" The warden opens her cell and she stares up at the opening gate. "Hooway! I'm fwee!" That however was not the case as he gripped her in his entire fist.
He holds her up and points at the other prisoners, "Let this be a lesson to all of you. There's no place in society for you if you can't fit in." He tightens his grip, making Tinella squeak. Warden Wrath stomps away, crushing the crumpled-up wanted poster on his way out.
Once the door slammed, the Noceda trio opened their cell, and Luz ran over to the lever next to Katya. "Don't worry. I can get you out." She tried to pull on the lever, but couldn't lift it. "No! My weak nerd arms!"
"You kids just get out of here while you still can. Enjoy freedom for us," Katya solemnly walks deeper into her cell.
Luz felt a hand touch on her shoulder and looked to see Luis. He and Lucia gave her a sad smile, "We'll come back for them." He made a promise to her and they reluctantly walked out.
They walked down a corridor together with Luz still looking depressed. Eda flew in next to them. "Hey. I just checked," She jumped off the staff and landed next to them. "The warden is distracted, tormenting some tiny creature. He won't be coming around here anytime soon." They just ignored Eda as they walked past her, confusing the woman. Eventually, they reached a door labeled 'Contraband.'
"My crown! It's close," King ran over to the door in front of them, "I can sense its power," He started clawing at the door and jumped up on the doorknob, wiggling it to get it open, but it wouldn't budge.
"Aw, he gets so cute when he's thirsty for power." Eda gushed at him.
"It's not fair that they're all in here," Luz finally spoke, confusing Eda again, "They just want to be themselves. Why does everyone think that being a weirdo is so bad?"
"Different realm, same issues," Luis crossed his arms, "Some assume weirdos can't get accustomed to standard social norms." He explained as he looked at the group, "On the other hand, people don't understand how these days 'fitting in' falls on a long list of things that are overrated."
"Honestly, it's people with overzealous quirks that make life worth living for," Lucia said with her hands pocketed.
Before Eda could speak, they heard King grunt, and he threw the doorknob to the ground. King gleefully cackles as pushes open the door, before running through.
"Come on, before he hurts himself." Eda told them as they walked in. Then they heard a crackle in the room.
"Ow!"
"Too late," Luis commented.
Inside the room, there was a giant glowing pillar in the center. King stood in front of it rubbing his skull before charging at the pillar headfirst, only to get repelled and launched backwards. He landed on his backside and sat with a dry expression.
"We have humans, remember?" Eda reminded him as they looked at the said trio.
"Oh, yeah." He realized.
The siblings looked up at the pillar and Luz took a breath, "You guys up for this?"
"Stealing a crown in a pillar of light only accessible by humans in a monster prison of an otherworldly realm where witches, demons, and magic actually exist," Lucia stated with a straight face, before she shrugs, "Yeah, why not? Let's go for it."
"We came this far," Luis had a hand on his shoulder to pop his neck, "Might as well go all the way before we go home."
All three reached out to the pillar, and their hands were able to pass through as the rest of them walked in. Inside the pillar were piles of what can only be described as junk. Among the junk piles, the one in front of them had a shiny golden crown at the top.
"Wait a second," Luz noticed something off about it and they narrowed their eyes, "Is that a…"
They gave a blank look at each other, and the middle child spoke, "You can't be serious."
The three came out with Luz holding…a Burger Queen paper crown. The other two were glad they found it, but the three humans looked at it in disappointment.
"My crown!" King jumped in joy before taking the crown from Luz and placing it on his head. "Yes. Yes! I can feel my powers returning!" The small creature pointed at a stuffed rabbit with one button eye. "You, there. Nightmare critter." He picks it up, "I shall call you Francois, and you shall be a minion in my army of darkness. Ha-ha!"
The three deadpanned, "That crown doesn't give him any powers, does it?" Luz wondered to Eda.
"Uh, no…"
"So…" Lucia started with her hands on her hips as she shook her head with a scoff, "Just so I can fully understand what's happened here. You lied and dragged us here, risking our necks to break into a prison so we could help you steal a paper toy that doesn't have anyone any powers?" She summarized as they all looked at her, "Does that sum up the story?"
Eda looked at them awkwardly before she answered, "…Well, in a technical and cynical way of putting it, yes it does."
"Yeah, figures," Luis and Lucia knew the end result would be a disappointment, but he didn't expect this, "We knew this whole thing would turn out to be a total crock. All the more reason I suggested to leave in the first place."
"How'd you two know, anyway?" Eda questioned Lucia and Luis.
"Because we're not dumb," Lucia told her plain and simple, "But that's not the important question. It's, why do this? Why would anyone involve themselves in a waste of time like this?"
"Yeesh, when you put it like that, anything can sound bad," Eda raised an eyebrow at the older girl's question before she answered, "But come on, kids, look at us. King and I don't have much in this world. We only have each other," She explained in a way for the three to understand. "So if that dumb crown is important to him, it's important to me. And besides, us weirdos have to stick together, you know? And if it were for any one of you, you would do the same for each other, right?"
The kids looked at each other thinking that she may have a point. And Lucia broke the silence, "I guess you have a point. Growing up, there wasn't anything we wouldn't do for each other, so I guess we can understand your reasons," She ruffles Luz's hair causing her to grin with a blush.
"I think you understand more than you lead on," Eda smiled at the three of them, "Well, we owe you guys one. Now, let's get out of here before the warden finds us and loses his head." Unbeknownst, his shadow was looming behind her.
"Too late." Wrath's hand turns into a blade, and with an easy swing, he decapitates Eda. Luz catches her head and they all scream as Eda sticks her tongue out like a bad fake corpse.
"Ow!" She blinked her eyes, "Oh, I hate it when that happens," The Nocedas screamed even louder.
"Eda! Are you okay?" Luz asked her in a panic.
"Okay?!" Luis shouted, "She should be dead!"
"Thanks for that," Eda looked at the boy dryly before answering Luz, "But I'm fine. This just happens when you get older." She said grimly.
"Does it?" They asked as Luz held her up.
"Finally, I have you cornered, Eda the Owl Lady," Wrath transformed his hand back to normal, as he had guards standing behind him. He marched towards them, snatching King's crown as he came closer, and ignored the tiny creature trying to reach for it, "My guards could never get you, but I knew if I took your pet's toy, you'd come running," He explained as Eda's body tried to find her head. Wrath then crushed the crown, causing King to become devastated.
"No! My power!" King backed away, and sobbed as he fell on his knees.
"That was way uncool, man," Luis stated, as everyone glared at the warden.
"What do you want from me?" Eda demanded the warden. "I've never actually broken any of your stupid laws...in front of you." She then had her face punched by Lucia, "Ow!" The old witch glared at her.
"If you're not gonna help, shut up!"
"I want you…" Wrath began as he pulled out a large bouquet, "To go out with me."
All of them stared at the warden, stupefied at how he just asked Eda out on a date. Lucia was the first to break the silence, "Wayward Warden Wrath says whaaaaaa...?"
"Yeah, I'll second that," Eda agreed before addressing the demonic warden, "Wayward Warden Wrath says whaaaaaa...?"
"Go, boss!" One guard shouts as they both give him a thumbs-up, which he returns.
He continued as he got on one knee. "You've always eluded our capture. You've always been the one who got away," He explained, "I found that alluring." He said in a sultry tone.
Lucia whistled, "Wow."
"I hate everything you're saying right now." Luz commented on his confession.
"Me too," Luis agreed. "Where to begin? Where do I begin?" He taps his fingers per syllable in his last sentence before addressing, "First, of all the confessions I've heard to ask someone out, that has got to be the cheesiest. Second, really?" He took Eda's head from Luz, "This is what you're into?" He asks as held her up, and she narrows her eyes in annoyance at him. "I don't wanna sound judgmental. It's your choice, albeit a questionable one. But for the life of me, I don't see the appeal."
"Again, I'm right here," Eda said blankly as he was showing no regard for her presence.
"Third," Luis ignored the bodiless witch and tossed her back at Luz. Fortunately, she caught her and they glared as he continued, "You have your guards stalk her, then you chop her head off, and then you ask her out?" Luis finished, and looked at his sisters. "High levels of creepazoid readings, am I right?"
"I'll say," Lucia agreed with his assessment. "They say love makes you do crazy things, but I didn't think they meant creepy and stupid."
"I never asked for either of your opinions!" Wrath snapped at the two of them, "And even if I did, keep them!"
"Hey, we're just saying," Lucia spoke, holding her hands forward, "If it were one of us, we'd do a better job of making a first impression, which I'm betting isn't a forte here, is it?"
"Eh…" King and Eda looked at each other, and the former shrugged before answering, "Among other things, no."
"Like I told you, stay out of this!" Wrath tosses the bouquet over his shoulder, turning his now free hand into tentacles to grab the three of them. Luis grabs King as he rolls out of the way, Lucia backflips, and Luz is the only one captured as she drops Eda and is being held above the ground. Lucia charges in at Wrath, but he swings his wrist and knocks her into Luis and King. He then picks Eda's head up and holds her by the hair, "So how about it, Owl Lady? The most powerful witch of the Boiling Isles and the feared Warden Wrath. We'd be the strongest power couple ever," Eda widened her eyes at that, "I mean, it's—it's not like you can say no right now."
Eda glances up at Luz, who is struggling to free herself from the warden's grasp. She looks to King, Luis, and Lucia who are caught by the guards. King is wiggling in the guard's arms struggling for freedom. Luis and Lucia just stood in the other's grasp looking annoyed and making no effort to escape.
Seeing no way out, she sighs, "All right, Warden. You win," She seemingly concedes defeat, "I'd just like to say something first. Come closer." He pulls her head closer, "No. Just come a little bit closer. Just... Yeah, that's good." Once her head was close enough, Eda blew a raspberry in his face.
Wrath recoils and drops Luz, who yelps as he wipes Eda's spit off his mask while she laughs. "Impudent wench! Don't you know how many germs are in your mouth? Blegh!"
"Get over it." Eda argued with the burly demon, "Like the kid said, you had your guards stalk me, and then you cut off my head. I am not going out with you."
As they argued, Luis stepped on the guard's foot as they didn't have their legs locked. He yelled in pain and he inadvertently loosened his grip on the two of them. With him distracted, Luis charged at the warden as Lucia delivered a spin kick to the guard's face. With him falling over, she uses him as a springboard to launch herself to the other guard to give a knee to the face, making him drop King.
"You okay, little man?" She picked him up and placed him on her shoulder.
"Yeah. Thanks," He held on to her as she grabbed Eda's wandering body by the arm.
"If you don't accept, then I have no choice but to des—" Before he could finish his threat, he was cut off by a familiar voice.
"Yo, big guy," Wrath looked and saw Luis charging at him only to jump and start flipping backward to deliver a power kick towards his chin. As the warden fell on his back with a loud crash, Luis landed in a crouch.
Luz, holding Eda's staff, picks up her head and chuckles at the sight of what her brother did, "Nice!"
"I know. I'm awesome," He smirked.
"Modest too!" Luz teased him as he glared at her for that. Luz and Luis ran to the others, "Okay, we're going now." Once they were all together, they mounted the staff. And Owlbert unfurls his wings and hoots. Expecto...flying? Magicus...escapicus!"
Eda noticed Wrath waking up and snarling. And she didn't have time for Luz to get her staff to work, so…"Gun it, magic stick!" The staff takes off with the five of them hanging on tight as Wrath clamored to his feet.
"Owl Lady, I won't let you get away again!" Warden Wrath declared as he transformed his arms into a bundle of tentacles, which he used to chase after the staff.
The five flew around the corner past prison cells with Warden Wrath in hot pursuit. Upon their high-speed chase, they saw the lever for the gates.
"We got this one," Lucia assured them as she and Luis opened the cells of the prisoners they talked to earlier, with Tinella having a black eye.
"Told you we'd come back for 'em." Luis was really proud to give them back their freedom.
"Yeah, but espera un segundo. (hold on a second.)" She looks at her big bro and sis, "You two could've done that the first?"
"Duh," Lucia said dryly as her sister overlooked that they weren't as physically weak as her. "You need a workout routine. Serious."
They burst through an outer door hitting two guards in front of them as they fly downward with the warden still in pursuit as he flips off the pillar. Wrath extends one of his tentacles, at tge staff. Before it made contact, Luis and Lucia jump off as it hit the back of the staff and launching Eda, Luz, and King off. The two dragged their feet as they faced the warden and the rest rolled when they hit the ground, with Wrath shifting hand into a blade again.
"Ow, my bones!" King cried out.
"Walk it off!" Luis ordered as he dusted off his pants.
"That's easy for you to say!" Luz argued as Eda reattached her head, "If you two had time to dodge that, you could have tipped us off, too!"
"I'll make a note of that," Lucia dusted her shirt sleeve before she redirected who was really at fault for the tumble, "Then again, that's what you get for not being on your toes."
"You can pass blame over how we got hurt later," She reaches into her hair and pulls out the key to the portal door. "For now, kids, go back to the human world." She hands Luz the key and then runs at Warden Wrath.
"What about you guys?"
King stood up and ran into the fight with Eda, "If you think this guy is bad, you shoulda seen her last boyfriend!"
Eda dodged Wrath's swings and grabbed King. "Not my boyfriend," She jumped out of the way of another attack, and ran towards the trio, "Go, go!" She put them on her staff.
"But we…"
Luz couldn't finish as Eda smacked the staff from behind and it took off, with the trio yelling. With the humans gone, Wrath took off his mask to reveal a fanged mouth and small beady eyes just under his hood. He breathed a stream of flame at Eda, who spun a circle that the fire went through. She created another circle to redirect it back at him, knocking the demonic warden right off his feet into the wall. As for the human trio, they barely managed to get a grip on the staff and looked down to see Warden Wrath standing up. He transformed both his hands into axes and charged at Eda.
From the hole he made, the three prisoners from before were just watching. The three landed in front of them, "Why are you guys just standing there?" Lucia asks them since the warden was too distracted to notice them, "This is your chance to escape."
"The warden will catch us," The prisoner with multiple eyes stated in depression. "He always does."
"We belong here," Katya added.
"Self-doubt is a pwison you can never fwom," Tinella said.
"So, you have a different way of doing things, a different worldview," Luis said thinking it wasn't a big deal. Then he points a thumb to Luz. "Take it from someone related to the weirdest dork in the human realm." Luz was shocked to hear that and gave him a look, "People with quirks like that make them awesome in your own right. They're worth being around when you give 'em a chance."
"Why are you helping us?" Katya asks them.
"Because us weirdos have to stick together," Luz put on her cat hood, "And nobody should be punished for who they are." She jumped onto the staff, pumping a fist.
"Yay!"
"Heh," Luis chuckled, causing Luz to look at him in confusion.
"What's so funny?"
"Isn't it obvious? You are," He pointed up at her. "I never thought I'd see this side from you of all people. It's nice."
"Guess being surrounded by people who get you besides us must be a real eye-opener," Lucia smirked at Luz causing her to blush. "So, are we gonna stand here, or are gonna kick some butt?"
Luz had a smile filled with determination, "Let's get 'em!
"Yeah!" All of them charged in towards the warden.
"Luz, gimme a lift," Luz descended to Lucia and she jumped on behind her.
"I'll set him up for you." Luis sprinted ahead as his sisters ascended.
Eda landed on the ground and then caught King who was thrown. She glared up at the Warden as he walked up to her. "No more running away, Owl Lady. Today I capture you once and for all," He lifted up the axes over his head and King whimpered, hugging Eda's arm.
"Hey, ugly!" Wrath expected to hear Luis again, and looked to see him charging.
He swung his arm, only for the boy to leap forward under it. Luis landed on his hands and sprung forward under it. He landed on his hands in front of Wrath and reeled his feet before springing upward to double-kick him in the chin. Above, the sisters saw Luis accomplish his part, and Lucia started to stand.
"You're up, sis," Luz said as the oldest child backflips off the staff. As she descended, Lucia spun to gain momentum for her attack. Once she was close enough to the warden, she gave him a hard kick to the face.
"Ooh!" Eda and King winced at the sight knowing that had to hurt. With Wrath on the ground, Lucia performed a somersault and landed in a crouch.
"Payback." She glared at the muscle-bound demon.
"Lucia? Luis? Luz?" Eda asked, expecting them to have been halfway to her house by now.
"Who were you expecting?" Luis asked rhetorically, as the prisoners tackled Wrath.
Eda stood up with hands on her hips, "I thought I told you three to go back to your realm!" She scolded.
"Right, because you looked like you were handling things so well on your own." Lucia stated in a sarcastic manner, and Eda was about to retort but couldn't deny that she was losing, "Sorry, we have this thing we like to do called following our hearts."
"I ate my own eye!" The multiple-eyes creature grabbed the Warden, pushing him back.
"I think the world is a twiangle!" Tinella declared as she tripped him over using her body.
The last was Katya, who gripped his shirt, "And I practice the ancient art of fan fiction!"
The multiple-eyed man had finished tying the Warden in his tentacles and then turned him over. "You!" Wrath glared at the three humans, "Who do you three think you are?" He demanded as Luz descended between her siblings, away by a few feet.
"Do not underestimate us, Warden Wrath, for we are the Nocedas!" Luz declared.
"The oldest, Lucia!" She introduced herself with crossed arms
"Second child, Luis, at your service!" He stated with his hands in his pockets.
"And I am the youngest, Luz!" She finished, "We are siblings of the human world, warriors of peace." She declared dramatically as the wind blew in their hair.
Luz pulled her firecracker from her book report out of her bag and tossed it towards Lucia, who set it up in the air like a volleyball. Luis jumped as she locked her fingers together.
"Easy as one…" She launches him in the air towards the firecracker.
"Two…" The middle child performs a volleyball spike on it to go to Luz.
"And…three!" Luz finishes as she hits it with Eda's staff. "Now eat this, sucka!"
The firecracker lands in Wrath's flaming mouth and goes off, sending fireworks into the air. He runs away as the fireworks are still going off in his mouth, while the prisoners cheer.
"Whoo-hoo! We won!" Shouted the eye-eating former prisoner in gleefulness.
"We are victorious!" Tinella exclaimed as she jumped in victory.
Eda, with King on her shoulder, joins them and held onto Luz's shoulder. "That was actually one of her better breakups." He spoke to them.
"Not a breakup," Eda said before turning to the older duo. "And I gotta say, those were some sweet moves you two pulled."
"Thanks," Lucia said as they both turned around to the group. "When you're a pair of black belts in kung fu, you can pull a lot of slick moves."
"I have no idea what you're talking about, but I know I would want to see it again," King said in excitement.
"Anyway, let's bounce before any more monsters fall in love with me," Eda said as Lucia snickered.
"I honestly can't picture anyone falling in love with her," She told Luis honestly, causing him to chuckle, annoying Eda.
"You know I can just leave you here," She threatened.
Luis scoffed, "You're not gonna leave us." He dismissed her empty threat. "We have the key to your portal."
"Smart aleck," Eda couldn't help but smirk. The five of them flew off on the staff as the fireworks were still going off behind them.
"I just want to ask something about the firecracker," Lucia looked at Luz with an eyebrow raised in confusion, "You actually brought that thing with you?" She asked in disbelief.
"Weird, isn't it? Even by my standards," Luz smiled sheepishly.
They made it back to the Owl House, in the living room where Eda leaned her staff against the couch. "Well, a deal's a deal. Let's get you three home," She snapped her fingers and the key floated out of Luz's pocket and into Eda's hand. She presses the eye, and the portal door unfolds itself into its door form in front of the fireplace.
They stepped up to the door, and Luz hugged herself before looking back at them and King looked sad.
"Before we go," Luz dug into her bag and held up the Azura doll. "I know it's not the same, but a king shouldn't be without a crown." She took off the tiara from the doll and held it out.
He took it and put it on his head. "This shall suffice. You there, plant. You are now under my command."
"Hah. Now I actually see why Luz thought this was cute," Lucia kneeled down, smiling at him.
Luis snickers, "Is he always like this?"
"Only when he plays make-believe," Eda smiled at him before remembering something. She handed Luz her book and pamphlet, "Oh, and don't forget this." The girl takes it and stares in thought.
"It's been fun," Lucia told them honestly as she and Luis put their backpacks on, "Thanks for the day, and for showing our sister that being a weirdo isn't so bad; as long as you're with the right crowd."
"You guys take care of yourselves. And don't be strangers," Luis smiled with his board wrapped in his arm. "If you're ever in town, look us up. C'mon girls. Time to go home," The older duo walked towards the portal but noticed Luz not moving. She just continued staring at the pamphlet. "What's up, Luz?"
Luz between her book and her pamphlet then looked at herself in the mirror. With a gasp, she held up the book. Staring at it and then lowering it down. Comparing the cover to her, Eda and King. That's when Luz got her big idea, and she turned to them in excitement.
"Okay," Luz started, getting everyone's attention, "I know you got your head cut off, and we started some kind of prison riot, but this was the most fun I've—heck, any of us ever had, right guys?" She looked back at her brother and sister.
The two looked at each other and they knew they couldn't deny she had a point. "Okay, yes," Luis started with his opinions, "It's actually been the most thrilling time I've had in…a while."
"I'll say. To be honest, I'd pay to do it again," Lucia wondered why Luz would bring that up now, "But what are you getting at, sis?" Eda wondered also, as she blinked owlishly.
"What I'm getting at is I don't fit in at home." Their eyes softened a little recalling that fact. Then she turned back to Eda, "You don't fit in here. If we stay, we could not fit in together." She looked at the camp brochure and crumpled it, "I am not going back to summer camp."
Eda chuckled, "What's summer camp?" She asked in small curiosity. No one in their world has ever heard something like that before. "What are we talking about here?"
"I wanna stay and become a witch like you and Azura," Luz said, holding up her book.
"What?!" Eda, Luis and Lucia exclaimed wondering if she was out of her mind. The latter two thought wanting to know magic to be one thing, but running from home?
"All right, that's crazy." Said Eda pushing the book down, "Humans can't become witches." Humans studying magic in their world can only be described as insane.
"Maybe that's because they haven't tried," Luz winked at her, "If you teach me to become a witch, I'll do anything you want."
Eda crossed her arms and looked behind her, "What do your brother and sister think?" Luz looked back at them as they were not pleased with this idea.
"I'm just gonna come out and say it, sis," Lucia had her arms crossed, "This is crazy."
"What's more, there is absolutely no way that we are actually going along with this," Luis stated with his hands pocketed.
"Please, guys?" Luz begged them.
"Look, I know things have been…challenging back home, and none of us wants to go to summer camp," Luis then gestured to their surroundings, "But we can't stay in a demon realm. This place is full of freaks." Eda and King looked at each other at the term 'freak.'
"But guys, think of how much fun it'll be if all three of us learn to become witches," She pleaded to get them to change their minds.
"You honestly can't think we're going to go through with this," Lucia argued, before bringing up an important topic. "What about Mom and our friends back home?"
"Look it's clear that I'm not going to be able to do this on my own," Luz told them how she felt if they didn't stay with her. "You guys are always encouraging me to follow my heart, and you said you wanted an adventure. With what we did at the Conformatorium, you said you'd do it again." She reminded them, "You guys can stay here with me so we can all receive witch training together, and we can find a way to let everyone know what we've been up to when the time comes."
Both of them looked at each other, thinking that she had a point. If they were to stay, not only would they be able to learn more about magic and this realm, but it'd be an adventure no human had ever dreamt of experiencing. Plus, it might prove to help boost Luz's self-esteem, since things don't often go well for her back home.
Lucia closed her eyes and placed her hands on her hips as she let out a deep sigh. Then she looked down at her kid sis, "Well if you're that determined to stay, I might as well, too." She smiled slightly, before turning to their brother, "Luis?"
"Not like there's any other choice," He pocketed his hands and looked at his sisters. "We all stay, or we all go home. Simple as that."
"You really mean that?" Luz's eyes glistened.
They both nodded, "Don't see why we wouldn't. It'll be fun." Lucia smiled slightly.
"It's Triple LN against the world or not at all," Luz's eyes shined brighter at Luis mentioning their group name, "Or for this summer, us against the demon realm." The brother smirked.
"You two are the best!" Luz then looked back at Eda and King, "Looks like we're in agreement, all three of us."
Eda still wasn't sure, but King pulled on her dress, "Let them stay!" He begged before whispering, "They can make us snacks."
Eda gave a smile and picked him up, "Well, I could use a hand keeping this goofball out of the cupboards." Then she turned to the three of them to accept their offer, "All right. I'll teach you how to be witches. But you have to work for me before you learn any spells." Eda holds out her hand, "Deal?" Luz looks at it before grinning and crushing the two in a hug, causing her to yelp, "What's going on?"
"Too tight! Too tight!" King waved his arms.
"It's called a hug, dude," Luis told them as he and Lucia looked on. "Might as well get used to it."
"And by the way, 'Triple LN'?" Eda questioned the human trio's group name, "Is that what you guys call yourselves?"
"Yeah," Lucia rubbed the back of her neck, "We decided to give ourselves a name for people to address all three of us."
"Hmm," King replied in thought, "I actually kinda like it."
"Me too." Eda agreed with him, "Easy to remember, and it's catchy."
Later that night, the trio opened the door to a storage room and looked around to see it was filled with junk. All things considered, they thought it wouldn't be so bad and shared a smile. They unroll their sleeping bags, placing them in a triangle formation, and throw themselves on them, now wearing pajamas.
Luz gray sleeveless top, purple shorts with an orange moon and star on the right leg, and white-and-indigo socks. Luis wore a blue camouflage tank top, a pair of black sweatpants with red lines on the side, and black nordic slippers. Lucia had her beanie taken off to show her hair to be slightly longer than Luz's. For her sleepwear, she has on a grassy green shirt with dark red short sleeves and vertical stripes, hot pink pajama pants with white polka dots, white socks, and lilac slippers. Another difference to note about their appearance was compared to Luz's thin frame, they looked to have their own athletic physiques. Both looked slightly muscular than most teens along with Luis having a lean form as Lucia kept a slender figure.
Luz then turned over and took a picture of her and her family out of her bag, smiling as they hugged each other and goofed off. She places the frame in the center and their phones vibrate. They looked on the screen and had a text message from their Mom that read 'How's summer camp?' Luz's expression falls, and she moves her phone away from her face.
They heard someone cough and saw King standing in the doorway, holding Francois. "Your sleep cocoons look fluffy," Luz sat up patting her sleeping bag and he sat down, curling into a ball as he hugged the stuffed animal. Luz smiles at him and sees new messages on her phone.
The first was from Luis and it read 'It'll take a bit to get settled, but we'll manage.'
The was from Lucia 'Honestly, not as bad as we thought. Could end up having a great time.'
She looked at them and they smiled again. She returned the before looking at her phone and replied 'I think we're gonna like it here.' She gave one final look at the other two, "Thanks again for doing this with me. I promise you won't regret it."
"Eh," Luis shrugged, putting his phone away, "Like I said, anything beats Military School. But this is way cooler than a summer camp."
"You said it," Lucia agreed before she and Luz put their phones down. She then lets out a yawn, "Well, rest up. Big day tomorrow." All went to sleep, and outside the front of the house, the eye-like window blinked.
Season 1 Outro
Luz, Luis, and Lucia are seen walking down a part of Bonesborough called Thistle Street. Lucia had her hands behind her head, as Luis's were in his pockets with his skateboard wrapped in his arm as they all looked around in amazement.
The trio then walked through the marketplace with various stalls in it, especially blinking meat with multiple eyes. The meat horrified Luz and disgusted the other two.
Luz was in the Slayground, kicking a Grudgby ball. In the background, Lucia was break dancing and Luis was showing kids how to do a handstand on his board.
They are now walking through the hallway of Hexside greeting Willow and Gus while Amity can be seen leaning on a pillar. Willow blushed at Luis as Luz raised her eyebrows at him and Lucia was nudging her brother knowingly.
Lucia is walking through the Bonesborough Library before the book Lucia held flies out of her hands. Her younger brother and sister were reading manga at a desk.
The trio walked through a dark part of the Boiling Isles forest with bones on the ground. Luz looked around with her hood on and a frightened expression as her siblings seemed prepared to fight anything that may come out.
Luis was lightly pushing his foot against the ground as he skateboarded along a river path of the Boiling Isles while his sisters were sitting by the river as they all looked at the Titan's skull. After a kickflip, he turned his attention towards the skull as well.
Triple LN are running through the forest, and arriving at the Owl House where they see King chatting with Eda excitedly as Hooty watches them from the back with a happy expression. King and Eda noticed the trio and waved at them before the trio smiled back and ran toward them before the camera pans up, showing the clear purple sky.
And this has been the first chapter. It took some time, but I finally managed. And sorry if some parts of it seemed a little longer than you guys would've liked. I've just been having this stuff in my mind for a while. And when some ideas or edits pop up, I just have to add them. Plus I like to add in as many details as I think possible.
For those curious, I already picked who could be a nice fit to voice my friend OCs and who they would sound like, including my OC Basilisks.
