Let me start off by saying, this is another dull chapter, or at least I consider it to be one compared to future ones, BUT some exciting news! I am so overwhelmed with the amazing reviews and kindness from all of you, that I wanted to give you a little treat. Instead of just a Sunday update, you can expect a whole weekend of updates! Your reviews have left my heart so full, I don't know how to pay you back because honestly I AM NOTHING, NOTHING WITH YOU! and I don't know how to give back other than with chapters! I warn you todays and tomorrows chapters will be a bit on the shorter side, but Sundays will be extra long and instead of stretching three chapters out for three weeks, you can have a whole weekend! The Denali's are a little hard for me, but I didn't just want to follow the books and not have Mare already be complete intergraded into the Cullens lives, and vampire kind, so this has to happen! Thanksgiving Dinner
"This looks really good." I say, carefully looking over everything laid out on the table. Slices of plump turkey with gravy, corn on the cob with slabs of butter and salt and pepper, a bowl full of fluffy-looking stuffing, a large glass Pyrex of green bean casserole with extra crunchy onions, rolls, and a delicate glass bowl full of whipped butter. Creamy looking mash potatoes and a gravy boat, a bowl filled with cranberry dressing and a glass dish of honey glazed carrots. Honestly, the amount of food is enough to serve everyone in the whole family, too bad they don't eat. Then again they all are sitting at the large dining table,
"I really hope it's good Mare." Esme smiles to my right, I nod looking at my empty plate.
After watching the parade and dog show (which Emmett and I both lost to Edward who picked the winning dog, of course, it was a Siberian husky) we spent the rest of the afternoon kinda just relaxing and meandering around. Honestly, it was nice. Tanya and Rose came back after 30 minutes and Alice, Jasper, Kate, and Irina followed soon after. I learned a little later, that Carmen was in the kitchen with Esme and Eleazar was out with Carlisle. Doing what, I don't know, just that they were out and still not back. I finished a game of chess with Kate (I lost) and then ended up watching the boys play Super Mario Bros, while Rose, Kate Tanya, and Irina disappeared. Alice stayed, but only for an ulterior motive,
"Can I braid your hair?" I furrowed my brows at her,
"Why?" She smiled, but theirs an evilness to it,
"I've wanted to get my hands on it, you haven't let me touch it for weeks." That's a fair point, I sat on the floor while she sat behind me on the couch, brush and small rubber bands in hand. Now theres five small braids woven together behind my head. I felt a memory rush back while she worked behind me. My mother had me in her lap, while she brushed my hair into a bun for ice skating practice. She would do it almost every day, then my grandmama would add a bow or a flower before I went on the ice...god how did I forget that?
When she finished she asked if she could pick out a new outfit for me to wear but luckily Esme called for dinner and to my surprise she asked everyone to sit at the table with me. Now I sit at the head while everyone sits around me awkwardly looking from me to the food, everyone but Irina who's no where to be seen. Emmett has his nose wrinkled and looks in pain,
"You don't have to sit here with me." I tell him,
"Thank god." Emmett gets to his feet, but Rose reaches out and pulls him back down, "Babe it stinks," he whispers to her, but she's not having it.
"It's Thanksgiving, family is supposed to sit around the table," Esme smiles. Family? I bite my cheeks,
"It's a beautiful tradition." Carmen quickly adds, her accent light on her lips.
"Isn't it weird to sit there and watch me eat?"
"It is," Emmett nods, "Ow!" He looks to Rose, it looks like she pinched him under the table. I turn to Esme,
"You don't have to, I promise." She looks around the table and then nods,
"Alright, Emmett you don't have to stay," This time he looks to Rose first. She waits for a second and then nods, he jumps to his feet and saunters out of the kitchen, Jasper watches him go, before turning to look back at me. I raise an eyebrow,
"You can go too." He doesn't even look to Alice, instead, he just follows Emmett out. I take a second to look around the table, "The rest of you really don't have to stay."
"I've always wondered what the big hype with Thanksgiving was," Kate says placing her hand on her cheek, "How can you celebrate a holiday on stolen land."
"Kate." Tanya rolls her eyes,
"Sorry."
"When I was a boy, Thanksgiving was on the last Thursday of November." Edward says, changing the subject, "My mother used to make mincemeat pies, I never thought they would fall out of favor here."
"My mother used to make jelly relishes...I'm glad they fell out of favor." Rose adds with a disgusted look on her face,
"There was no such thing as Thanksgiving when I was human, we would feast on celebration days, but nothing was truly set obviously." Tanya adds, how long ago were these women changed?! I'm not going to ask.
"I remember when Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving in the States, I thought it was a silly holiday," My mouth falls open before I can think about it.What does she mean she remembers Lincoln?I turn to Alice who's remained oddly quiet throughout this whole conversation.
"My father and I used to go turkey hunting!" Emmett calls from the living room, the sound of the TV playing in the background.
"Either join the conversation in here or be quiet," Esme calls, after a second Emmett grumbles but stays where he is. "Go ahead Mare, eat before it gets cold," Esme encourages. I take one more peak around the table. These people are really going to watch me eat eh? Alright then, I reach forward plucking a little off of every dish until my plate is full, and then dig in, choosing the mac and cheese first. I turn to Esme,
"This is amazing." She smiles gently,
"I don't know if it's better than pizza but-"
"It's better than Pizza," I tell her digging into the turkey next. Her smile widens and if I have to eat this whole meal with a table full of vampires to make Esme happy, then so be it. Just then the front door opens and closes, everyone turns their head as Carlisle appears at the front of the stairs and strolls into the kitchen, he stops when he sees everyone sitting,
"What is this?" He asks, a hint of a smile on his face,
"Thanksgiving." I say when no one answers,
"You're all just sitting watching the human eat?" Eleazar comments behind Carlisle. He has an amused smile on his lips and his eyes quickly find Carmen's, "Enjoying yourself, love?" Carmen only shrugs in his direction and gestures to the table,
"Humans are so interesting." Glad to be of service. Edward covers his mouth before anyone can see his lips tweak up into a smile.
"I didn't realize you wanted everyone to sit at the table." Carlisle comments, coming to rest his arms on Esme's shoulders,
"Isn't that what you do on Thanksgiving?" She questions, everyone at this table looks under the age of thirty, it's easy to forget most of them were born right after the turning of the 20th century. They probably have not celebrated Thanksgiving in over 70 or 80 years. For Carlisle and the Denali, it's been much longer.
"Is that what you and your mother do Mare?" Carlisle asks me as I'm still stuffing my face. I look between both of them before swallowing,
"Which answer will make you happy?"
"You don't have to make us happy Mare." Esme chides. Theirs a moment of silence before I answer,
"No we never sat at the table...this is nice." Esme smiles, and I reach for another roll,
"Mind if we disappear for a second?" Carlisle asks me gesturing to Esme,
"Of course not, watching me eat has to get old at some point." Carlisle chuckles reaching forward to place a soft kiss on the top of my head. This time I don't flinch. Esme smiles and pats my hand before getting up,
"Alice you too, please." Alice gets up slowly, looking at Edward before following them out.
"Mi Amour." Eleazar captures Carmen's attention, she stands as do Kate and Tanya, and together they exit the kitchen. I swallow watching them all leave, before turning to the only two people here,
"What's going on?" Edward says nothing, instead, it's Rose who speaks,
"Do you want seconds?"
