A.N: I won't be producing any new stories anytime soon but this idea wouldn't get out of my head so I thought I'd write up a test chapter.

Plot: What if Dumbledore hadn't defeated a dark lord, what if it was somebody else?

Headmaster

'Am I too late?' Wondered Albus Dumbledore, transfiguration teacher of Hogwarts as he rushed towards the area where he believed Grindelwald would be.

He had been asked multiple times by multiple people to fight Grindelwald, they had asked and begged him to do it, but he had refused. He would not fight him, until now. Dumbledore rushed down the streets and turned a corner when he suddenly heard a lot of noise, noise that sounded a lot like screaming.

"Grindelwald," Breathed Dumbledore before he apparated forwards and turned a corner before he found himself face to face with a rather odd sight.

Apparently, it was not screaming he had heard, or at least not screams of fear, no, it had been cheering. Loud and extremely happy cheering, Dumbledore quickly made his way through the cheering crowd and suddenly froze when he spotted the sight in front of him.

A short distance away, he saw his old friend, Gellert Grindelwald, but the man was not standing victoriously, no, he was unmoving and on the ground. Was he dead or unconscious? Albus did not know, but he sincerely hoped that it was not the former. Another thing that attracted Albus's attention was the man that was standing next to Grindelwald's fallen body.

This man stood tall and proud, a wand in each hand, one of those wands being the wand that Dumbledore had seen Grindelwald hold in several newspapers. A grin appeared on the man's face, he was undoubtedly handsome, he had a nice face with nice and messy black hair. His emerald green eyes seemed to glow and Dumbledore couldn't help but notice the lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead.

"So," The man spoke, not even looking a little bit out of breath. "does anyone know anywhere good to eat? I'm a bit peckish."

"Now, ladies and gentlemen," Headmaster Dippet spoke during the most recent Hogwarts staff meeting. "I'm afraid to announce that Professor Broodwitch has chosen to retire this year, something about wanting to spend more time with his family."

"Such a shame, he was one of our best," Professor Slughorn commented.

"Indeed," The head of Ravenclaw house agreed. "But who is going to replace him?"

"Fortunatly, I've already found a willing applicant," Dippet grinned.

"That's quick," Dumbledore noted in a surprised voice.

"Actually, he came to me," Dippet confessed. "He questioned me on if the defence against the dark arts post was available and said that if it was not then he was also willing to take on the charms or transfiguration post if they were open."

"Unfortunately, for him, I don't believe I will be leaving my post anytime soon," Dumbledore said with a small smile.

"Me either," The charms teacher chuckled in agreement.

"He should be here any second," Dippet said just before a knock was heard on the door. "See, punctuality, I love it," He grinned. "Come in." He called.

The door opened and a second later a man walked in, the staff (with the exception of the headmaster) all stared at him with wide eyes, though none as wide as Professor Dumbledore who was staring at the grinning, green-eyed man.

"I'm not late, am I?" He asked.

"Right on time, actually," Headmaster Dippet chuckled before turning to the rest of his staff. "Ladies and gentlemen, I am delighted to introduce you all to the defeater of Grindelwald and our newest member of staff, Professor Harold Peverell."

"Hello," Harry greeted politely, waving his hand at them.

"I don't understand what the problem is, Albus," Professor Dippet sighed as he sat behind his desk while Dumbledore stood opposite him.

"I just don't understand why you are insisting on making Professor Peverell the deputy headmaster," Dumbledore replied. "I have been at this school far longer than he has, not to mention that I am - not to toot my horn as the muggles say - quite popular amongst the students in my class."

"Indeed, you are," Headmaster Dippet agreed. "But that doesn't take away from Professor Peverell's accomplishments in this school. The deputy head is not chosen just on who has worked here longer."

"And I suppose that him defeating Grindelwald didn't factor into it?" Professor Dumbledore asked with a challenging look on his face.

"Undoubtedly that has a part to do with it," Dippet said, not even bothering to deny it. "Politics is everywhere, Albus, even in something as simple as running a school. Having him become our deputy headmaster will be a popular move, not just with the board of governors but also with the parents of our students. But that's only part of it, Albus, the fact that he defeated Grindelwald shows his competence at magic, and his classes further prove that. Goodness, Albus, he had fifth-year students producing Patronus charms for Merlin's sake. I couldn't even imagine that happening. If any of our previous defence teachers had tried that with the seventh-year students then they'd likely only manage to get one or two students to do it, if they were lucky.

That's also not to mention the fact that nearly all of the students love him, the muggle-borns and purebloods all agreed on the fact that he's a great teacher. Even those that liked Grindelwald will reluctantly confess that he knows what he's doing. He hands out and takes away points fairly to the best o my knowledge and he's produced better results than Hogwarts has seen in years. In fact, we've skyrocketed in popularity thanks to him. "

"But what about that girl?" Dumbledore pressed. "He's keeping a girl in his room, that is highly unprofessional and..."

"Albus, Professor Peverell has already explained the situation to me," Headmaster Dippet cut him off. "Merope was recused by him from her abusive family. Mr Peverell has already explained it to me and the DMLE, he's working between the two of us on a way to try and get her properly educated while also working out a place for her to live. He swore to me that nothing unprofessional would happen between himself and Miss Gaunt and was even willing to provide a magical oath if need be."

Dumbledore let out a small sigh, feeling like he wasn't going to be getting that deputy position soon.
