Mystic Memoir

The First Fight

Udonna had never fought before. Sure, there were some occasional squabbles back in the academy with some witches hailing from elitist families, thinking her sister and her did not belong there, but she had resolved those conflicts by wit not might.

Somehow, despite not being trained in combat like Leanbow, Niella and the others, fighting came easily. The sorceress had warned them that inheriting the wands would do more than imbue them with powerful armour which would protect them from the worst of injuries… that it would open their minds to the knowledge and expertise of their predecessors. It was both a relief and burden. Her senses were increased tenfold, her eyes somehow knew what to look out for, and her body moved on its own to fend off the attacks. It was uncanny… and though she knew it was her body, she did not necessarily feel in control.

From the corner of her eyes, she saw Leanbow, Lyon, Lena and Neville fight the same way they always did in their routine spars and tournaments. Perhaps, it was because they knew what they were doing.

She felt her hands move up, grab hold of a hidiac's shoulder and throw it over her shoulder. As she turned, she saw the pink mystic hover in the air, a pair of large butterfly wings manifesting over her back, as they flapped back and forth, unleashing strong winds that blew the hidiacs away.

Maybe, using magic instead of relying on the instincts of this enchanted armour was the key to establishing her own autonomy over it.

"Magi Staff!" She yelled, drawing her staff, which had the emblem of the mermaid on it. She felt her personal magic connect to the raw elemental power of the staff, and smirked.

Tendrils of water manifested out of thin air, and wrapped around the hidiacs, before clobbering them to the ground repeatedly till they dematerialized into specks of dark magic.

She looked around. The other rangers had also finished fighting the creatures, and the villagers were coming out from hiding, holding each other as they cried in relief and thanked them profusely.

Leanbow ran over to her immediately, calling off his armour.

"Are you alright, my love?"

"I am fine." She reassured him, as she let the power go as well, and the blue armour vanished in blue sparks, leaving her in her purple gown.

"Thank the saints." He murmured, and Udonna resisted the urge to snap at him. She was a warrior now, just like him… Not some damsel in distress, needing a knight to rescue her.

"You don't need to worry, Leanbow." She sighed.

"I know, but I still do." He said earnestly before his lips twitched. "You were incredible, Udonna."

Did he expect she would not be? Udonna could not fault him anyways. She had not been sure herself.

Udonna nodded. Part of her wanted to tell him, that it was not her… It was the power of the wand and the impulses of the armour that can think for itself, but she kept her mouth shut.

The sorceress had chosen her to be the blue mystic over many others, including fully trained combat witches, warlocks, and knights.

She should not doubt herself or her magic, and most of all she did not want Leanbow to get distracted during fights.

Leanbow wrapped his arms around her and kissed her forehead. She leaned into his embrace, as all the anxiety washed away.

She fought as one of the mystics against the foul creatures of the underworld, and she didn't just survive, she won!

Maybe things were not as dire as they had seemed a few days ago, when the Gates of the Underworld had risen and Morticon's forces had burst through, wreaking havoc across the lands.

Maybe, just maybe… things will be alright.

Udonna being the blue mystic before Madison was an idea I had for a while, and to be completely honest, this entire fic spun out of that idea.

We all know water and ice are merely alternate physical states of the same compound, and there is no reason why ice and water magic cannot be linked. Of course, there are reasons why they are NOT the same element, but that is for another chapter.
