"Emily are you sure you're ready to see it?" Lucifer asked seeing the unsure expression on Emily face as she held Charlie's hand in support. This wasn't the first time she'd attempted this, nor the second or even third. This was however the only time she hadn't broken down crying when she saw her wingless reflection. To her right Charlie gave a reassuring thumbs up.
If he was being honest if it wasn't for Charlie, he was sure she'd shut down completely. Every time he visited which was every day he'd come to see the two of them talking or playing a game or simply spending time together. Not that either of them complained. Charlie jumped at spending time with Emily while Emily needed someone as positive as her right now.
Of course, when it came time for her treatment any courage of joy she had vanished. Each time she'd close her eyes as the bandages came off and her wounds cleaned. She'd been in the hospital for nearly two weeks and each time Bel had treated her back she'd essentially shut down murmuring that it was just a bad dream or that it was just a brief punishment, and Sera would come any day and get her. Each time however Charlie would help rebandage her as she looked around the room waiting for the golden portal that never came.
The first time though, that was the worst. Her stitches had come open during a pretty bad nightmare which woke up Charlie, and upon seeing the golden blood had screamed. Thus, leading to Emily waking up and upon seeing Charlie's hands covered in her blood triggered her, which led to her screaming just as loudly before panicking and falling off the bed. Vaggie upon hearing this all but burst down the door seeing the both of them panicking and in tears. Thankfully Vaggie remained calm enough to summon him and Bel. Suffice to say both of them only got worse when Bel summoned the needle filled with sedatives, one for Emily to calm her down and stich her back up and the other for Charlie who was freaking out. The sight of the two of them holding each other and begging Bel to make the shot painless was adorable at first but quickly broke his heart when he saw Emily cling to Charlie as Bel stitched her back up.
"I'm still dreaming right? Sera would never hurt me...she'd never take my wings...right?" Charlie didn't answer her, instead holding her tighter as she cried again.
Today though she'd deemed herself ready and now stood in the bathroom psyching herself up. "I'm ready...I-have to f-face what Sera did."
"Alright Emily." he started holding the mirror up when her eyes met his and he saw how nervously she was clutching at her gown her face growing redder. Realization hit him and he handed the mirror to Vaggie. "I'll just be right outside in case you girls need me." Emily quickly nodded and waited for the door to close before she slipped the gown off and opened her eyes and saw her back.
"...?" she'd expected bad. Expected to see her entire back with burn marks or scar tissue. Instead, all she saw where six patches of scar tissue where her wings used to be. If she was being honest, it wasn't that bad. Just the permanent physical reminder I'm no longer an angel.
"They're really gone, aren't they?" it hurt to admit but she knew she couldn't keep lying to herself.
Vaggie seeing her expression stepped forward. "I know it might not mean much but I know what you're going through. At least somewhat."
Emily did know. She'd told her that she used to be an exorcist and was punished for sparing a life before being found by Charlie. "Thanks Vaggie."
"Anytime Lady Emily."
"-just Emily." she said a bit sadly. "I'm not a seraphim anymore so no need for any fancy titles." Vaggie nodded while Charlie suppressed a grin knowing something they didn't.
After she redressed in one of Charlie's old dresses, one she brought so Emily wouldn't be stuck only wearing the gown. Of course, Emily had thanked her profusely for this gift but in true Charlie fashion she simply said she had entire walk-in closets full of clothes she didn't wear and if Emily wanted, she could have them all. Although she was a bit nervous wearing red as it was a unique color in Heaven, normally only worn by new winners before they switched to something more appropriate.
Still, this was a gift, and it would be rude not to wear it.
Plus, it has a cute little apple and crown on it. As she slipped it on she heard Charlie let out a small squeal. "You look adorable Emily."
"Thanks Charlie."
Opening the door they saw Lucifer waiting his smile growing bigger when he saw Emily in her new dress. "awwww don't you look adorable, guess It's all but official now...I mean How are you holding up Emily?"
"I still don't understand why Sera did it but I can't keep denying what I am." she took a breath readying to say that she was a fallen angel. "I-I'm in Hell and I'm a f-f-fffa...I can't say it." seeing her back was one thing but she couldn't admit it just yet.
Lucifer simply nodded remembering how long he'd taken. "Don't worry Emily. Trust me when I say nobody here is going to force you to say or do anything you don't want to do."
She knew she could believe him. Since day one everybody here had been nothing but kind to her. "Thank you, sir."
Hearing the word sir he rolled his eyes. "Emily I'm not big on formalities, so please just call me Lucifer."
"I could never!" she quickly said. "You're still my elder and I am in your realm, actually I guess I'm one of your subjects now, aren't I? So, I guess it's your majesty now?"
He sighed watching her nervously fret about but held his tongue as he saw Charlie's grin. Should I tell her now? No, no I need to wait juuuuusst a little longer.
"Just hold off on the titles for now. Trust me I'll make sense later."
"If you say so."
With that settled they waited for Bel and for the final ruling. While one the one hand Emily did want to hear that she was healed she was also hoping that she wasn't. Not that she didn't want to get better, she did, she wanted to stop having panic attacks, she wanted to stop having nightmares but to her growing guilt she wanted more than anything just to stay here. When she was here, she had Charlie by her side keeping her happy and safe.
While here Lucifer, the king of Hell, the fallen one, someone Sera said had created evil. Would personally stop by to talk to her and take her on walks around the garden. Not because he had to but because he wanted to where his exact words when she'd asked him. He wasn't evil nor did he tempt her, no, instead he was friendly and even a bit goofy. He even promised to show her something called LuLu World when she was better. Then there was the teatime with Belphegor which often turned into a shared nap. Even Vaggie's presence helped.
She's actually pretty friendly. Must better then Lute ever was. Plus being here means I don't have to think about what comes after. She'd done her best not to think about that. But late at night when Charlie was asleep, or when she was in the terrifying few moments she was alone she couldn't stop herself. Each time unable to stop from imagining being harmed again. Or even wors left alone. I think Belphegor called it monophobia or something. I'm not afraid of being alone! I-I just don't want to be.
So, when Bel finished examining her, she heard the words that sent her into a small panic attack. "Good news Emily, I believe you're well enough to be discharged."
"R-really? I mean not that I'm doubting you but maybe I could stay just another week? Or maybe two?"
Bel gave her a sad smile seeing her taking a few steps toward Charlie. With a thought she sent out a calming wave of magic before gently placing her hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry my dear. I'm releasing you into Lucifer's care. He'll make sure you're safe and recover properly."
"Wait, really?" looking at him he nodded which calmed her down. Truthfully, she hadn't known what would happen after being discharged. Charlie had mentioned her hotel so that was where I was hoping to go. I doubt she'd turn me away but she did say it was for sinners seaking redemption.
Seeing her uncertainty he added "That is if you want to. Trust me when I say my palace has more than enough rooms and If I'm being honest, it would be good to have some company."
Hearing this Emily grew nervous. Me? Staying with Lucifer? In his palace!? I couldn't... Sera would never allow me; she'd freak out knowing I was... In Hell? Where she sent me after ripping of my wings!? Her feelings toward her sister were still confusing, often switching between sadness and anger, but she did know one thing. Whether she liked it or not Hell was her home now. And if the king of Hell was offering her a place to stay then it would be rude to refuse.
"If you truly don't mind sir-er...sire? Lucifer?"
"ehh we'll work on that. For now, let's get you discharged and then see about getting you some more clothes. As good as you look in Charie's you really should have your own. Agan sorry about your dress but it was beyond saving." she nodded but still felt said. That dress was the only bit of Heaven she'd technically been allowed to keep. "Don't worry Emily I'll make sure you find something cute. After all I can't have me new-"
"Charlie" Lucifer warned. Her hand went to her mouth. "Oh right, I meant my new friend get anything less than the cutest outfit."
"Okay, I suppose I have always wanted to try something other than white."
Belphegor cleared her throat getting everyone's attention. "Before you go one more thing." her candle lit up before a small pink container appeared. "Emily these should help with any nightmares and help with any lingering anxiety. Take one or two a day depending on how you feel."
Emily looked at the container and felt herself start to tear up. "Thank you."
"Anytime my dear." her eyes closed and to everyone's amazement she started sleeping standing up which they took as their cue to leave. One portal later and Emily found herself in the pride ring just outside Lucifer's palace.
"And here we are, home sweet home." he said walking them through the doors and into the also red interior where mere moments later Emily met two adorably fuzzy creatures. At first, she thought them fallen cherubs but then she noticed the bat like wings.
"Emily meet Razzle and Dazzle. Think of them as your friends as well as servants and bodyguards." with a snap they saluted. "Got that you two? treat her like you would Charlie. In every way, understand?" they looked at him then to Charlie who hid a knowing smile which confused Emily.
Seconds later she was being embraced by their furry bodies, and she couldn't stop from laughing. "Looks like they like you. Can't really blame them though, you are pretty lovable."
"Right you are Charlie, so lovable in fact that I think it's time we make this a bit more permanent. Now despite what you may have been told I don't generally make deals, no reason to honestly but this is a very special exception."
Hearing this Emily grew a bit nervous but also slightly hopeful. If it meant she could stay here with the both of them she'd do anything.
Already lost in her thoughts she almost missed the words "bound" and "deal" words that she knew had a different meaning here. For a moment, a brief moment she wondered if Lucifer's and Charlie's hospitality had all been an act to lower her guard. That everything they'd done was all done to get her to sign away her soul.
She didn't want to believe it but when Lucifer summoned a piece of paper and handed it to her, she couldn't help but start to panic. "Now I know this is sudden but Charlie and I do think it's for the best."
"yo-you...want-ttt-to..." her heart was beating to loud, and her vision was starting to blur. Her ability to even breath was forgotten as the paper in her hands seemed to weigh a ton.
She vaguely heard her name being called before in a panic she tried to run only for her vison to turn black as she passed out.
When she came to she found herself once again in bed and for a moment sighed thinking it had just been a dream and she was still at the hospital.
A thought that was quickly shot down when she saw Razzle and Dazzle sleeping at the foot of the bed. She let out a small gasp waking them up which soon led to them letting out series of baas. The sound of running feet was heard before Charlie kicked down the door looking frantic. "Emily!"
"Ch-charlie?" she'd barely uttered her name when she launched herself across the room crawling up and hugging her with as she launched into a hysterical rant. "I'm sorry! Wethoughtlike it...but then you blackedoutand I'm so sorry!"
Lucifer appeared next looking equally worried as he sat down on the bed. Running a hand through his hair he let out a long guilty sight. "...I...I'm sorry Emily. Bel warned me I should give you some time to properly adjust before I offered to adopt you."
"It's fie sir I-...wait what?"
But he kept going clearly not hearing her. "It's just I thought if we got it out of the way now, you'd feel a bit safer, but I guess you assumed if you had a family, and Charlie was your sister you thought she'd betray you like Sera did."
"I'd never harm Emily! She's my precious little sister!" Charlie screamed clutching Emily even tighter.
In that moment Emily's head was spinning as she felt a series of things, thankfully all of them were good. "you wanted to adopt me?"
He looked at her confused before summoning the papers. "Yeah, didn't you see the word adoption in large print?"
She looked away ashamed and embarrassed.
It took him a few moments of feeling her feelings for Lucifer to know what had happened.
"Oh...oohhhhhh you thought...no no no no no no. Emily if you ever believe anything I say then believe me when I say we love you. What you partially heard me say was that if you became my second daughter then you'd be protected by the deal I made with Sera and Adam about extermination and that they'd be bound to honor it."
"Wha?"
"Yeah, that's how the pact works. Heaven can come down here once a year but Adam and his exorcists can't harm any member of the royal family. Not me, not Lilith, not Charlie, and you if you become the newest Morningstar."
Squirming free Emily looked over the adoption papers looking it over but seeing that it was straight forward. Unable to stop herself she asked the one question she needed answered. "And Sera?"
With a sad smile he summoned another paper this one bearing her name and seal. It hurt seeing her name, even more when she saw this was the official pact between the three of them. "As she originally signed the paperwork, she too would be bound by the pact. Never again would she be able to harm you in harm you. Then again... I personally swear they'll never get the chance." his form shifted and for a moment she saw the true king of Hell in all his demonic glory. Gazing upon it made her extremely thankful Charlie was holding her because she was sure her body was trembling. Part of her wasn't sure if it was fear or something else.
He took a breath and was back to his normal form. "Still it is your choice, if you want to stay with me or Charlie but not be adopted that's one hundred percent your choice. I still swear to-
"Emily!" his eyes shot open seeing Charlie freaking out as they saw Emily biting down on her finger to draw blood before quickly signing the name Emily Morningstar.
As the last letter was written all Lucifer could do was ask "Emily sweetie, why'd you use your blood?"
She just looked down at the contract and then to her new dad before simply saying "I was told that all demons use blood when they make contracts."
