Today is the day, Tails can do this. She's already done this two times before, hasn't she? Tails knows she can beat this stupid bird again. Despite reassuring herself many times, Tails still doubts herself. She has to make a constant reminder to herself that it's okay. She'll be fine. Tails gears up for the day and prepares for the race with no consequences. Almost falling asleep a few times but other than that, nothing. She'll be fine, racing is a lot more interesting than anything else she was doing when she fell asleep.
When the race comes she goes up on the track and goes next to Wave. Neither of them look at each other. Only getting on their boards and getting ready to race. Eggman starts the same announcement again. But soon enough, it concludes. The races start. Tails holds nothing back and immediately gets ahead, leaving Wave and any other potential challenger in the dust. Wave attempts to catch up but it is thwarted by Tails' speed on the board. Tails goes as fast as she can without being reckless. But she's probably still being reckless.
The first lap has a big lead for Tails, while Wave is left completely behind. She gains a bit, but still behind. The second lap is the same and all the other ones as well. Wave gains a bit, but if anything is still far behind. That's until the end, Tails slows down, a lot. Wave catches up to her easily. Wondering why she slowed down, to Wave's surprise. Tails is asleep. Wave attempts to wake her up. She succeeds but Tails skyrockets, way too fast. Before she crosses the finish line, Tails falls off of her board and shoots across the finish line. Landing directly on her face. The stadium goes silent. Really silent. Extremely silent. The silence is deafening.
Tails wins, however she's injured.
Tails doesn't care. She won. She won. She won, She won, She won! She couldn't be happier. Even if she almost died. She's fine. A few bandages should fix her right up, no problem. She doesn't even know why she fell asleep, it kinda happened. Apparently always being in front is a lot more boring than Tails thought it would be. She doesn't even know why she thought it would be a good idea to go days without sleep. But she still won. So everything is good and everything worked out. She's fine, no matter how much Jet worries over her yet pretends he doesn't.
After a rush to the infirmary, with the insistence of Jet. Tails is said to be largely fine and only has to be applied with some medicine and bandages. It didn't end up hurting her too much. Jet tells Tails to go to sleep. Tails agrees, she can rest, for now. Until she has to get Storm's gear ready and make sure it's prepared. But for right now, she can rest. Then she'll have to wake up early. She's not breaking any of Jet's rules, she can still do the check early. It's not like she'll be sleep deprived by then. It'll be fine, she still needs to do her job after all.
Wave feels bad. Really bad. Extremely bad. Even if it isn't her fault, she still has empathy for Tails. That looked like a nasty fall. A really nasty fall. Of course, Wave helped her up and all that. But she still feels bad. Really bad. She can't help it, stupid empathy! She laughs to herself getting mad over something like that. It doesn't matter now, she can't help but feel bad. Honestly she feels in a way that it's her fault. She doesn't even know why Tails fell asleep. But it couldn't have been intentional, that fall wouldn't have happened if she was faking it for taunting purposes.
The next day the races resume. With the final match. Between Knuckles and Storm. Tails made sure everything was ready. Wave also did. So it should be an even match, that's at least what Wave hopes. Tails hopes that Storm stays ahead and they defeat team Sonic, one and for all. After all of this, she will prove that she is the best. That she is valuable. With no competition. That she is the most valuable player possible. That she is the reason they got here in the first place.
The two take center stage and Eggman makes his announcement. The race starts. Neck and neck, like the first time and the time before this one. The first few laps stay the same. The final lap is where things get interesting. Knuckles actually gets ahead of Storm. For a while. Storm, realizing that he won't get back ahead, attempts to swarm Knuckles, of course, Knuckles retaliates. Which sends Storm spinning to a humiliating defeat. Flying off the track.
Tails wants to cry. To keel over and die. But she won't. Jet looks flabbergasted. Eggman for some reason smiles. Contrasting a lot with her and Jet's reactions. She hates this stupid prick. She can't wait to stop working with him after they're finished with this stupid scheme. She wants to sleep, after she stops yelling at Storm for a while. That'll make her feel better about losing. Maybe or maybe it won't. Tails is still going to yell at him for being stupid.
Eggman takes center stage. Baking in the audience. Congratulating the winners, with a small but meaningless speech but then, in a twist absolutely nobody could've possibly seen coming. Like absolutely no way anyone could've possibly predicted this at all. He presses a button and a new robot comes out and so does his signature mobile, taking him away. Into the sky, but of course not before taunting Sonic.
"Good luck getting the emeralds now, Sonic! I've won fair and square and now, I'm going to trap you!" Eggman flies away and the stadium seals. Trapping everyone inside with this new deadly robot. Sonic and his friends gear up for yet another battle with one of Eggman's robots. Will they make it in time to stop Eggman however? Maybe? Probably.
