Chapter 05: Progress
Sunday, October 5th 2008
"I've read the reports from Mitsuru and Ikutsuki, you fought a group of them this time?" Takeharu asked over the phone. He was currently sitting in his office in Kirijo Headquarters, alone.
"Yes, Kirijo-sama, but while they were all stronger than average shadows, only one of them was capable of speech," Ryuden confirmed.
"Right, you can understand them. Forgive me for forgetting that detail, it's still hard to believe."
"I understand, Kirijo-sama. If it's all the same to you, I still can't believe they can talk."
Takeharu took a deep breath, "So we've had two encounters with these special shadows, one solo and one group. While we're assuming they're aiming for you based on the previous encounter, we still don't know when and how they're going to strike until they're actually here." Takeharu stated.
"That is correct, Kirijo-sama. At least, we haven't identified a pattern based on the two days they've appeared."
Takeharu resisted the urge to groan, he hated this. These kids shouldn't be out fighting because of his fathers horrible actions. Alas, without a persona of his own, he could only provide support.
"It seems Mitsuru is keen on the training sessions the three of you have been doing. How's progress?" He asked.
"I believe it's going very well, Kirijo-sama. Sanada-san is able to close the distance between himself and his opponent very quickly, letting him fight one on one with a Laochra with ease. I might have Ojou-sama join me so he can practice fighting two on one," Ryuden sounded proud of the progress.
"What about Mitsuru?" Takeharu was interested in hearing what Ryuden had to say about his daughter.
"Ojou-sama has excellent footwork thanks to her fencing. That said, it's harder for her to land a strike against Laochra without relying on her persona. This is due to the range advantage spears have over swords. Sanada-san doesn't have this problem since he can just rush his opponent with his fists, but Ojou-sama needs to aim and strike with her blade," explained Ryuden.
"I see, I appreciate your honesty."
"Of course, Kirijo-sama. I gain nothing from lying to you about this, it could only result in someone getting hurt or killed."
"You'd be surprised at the things people would lie about... Anyway, is there anything you can think of to help her overcome the disadvantage?" Takeharu got them back on track.
"I'm not an expert fencer, but if ojou-sama continues to practice against me, I'm confident she'll have a breakthrough."
"Placing your faith in her?"
"Absolutely, Kirijo-sama."
"...alright, is there anything else that needs discussing?"
"That's everything of importance, Kirijo-sama," answered Ryuden.
"Good. Unless something happens, I'll hear from you next week. Until then."
"Yes, Kirijo-sama."
Takeharu hung up the phone, then rubbed the bridge of his nose. He sighed deeply. 'There must be something more I can do. Ikutsuki has been looking for additional persona users for months, but there must be something else.' He leaned back in his chair, thinking over things. 'Setanta. Cú Chulainn. The Táin…Táin…' Takeharu went onto his computer and started a search. After a few clicks, he found what he was looking for. "Táin Bó Cúailnge, let's give you a deep read. Maybe I can find something the others have been overlooking." He said out loud. 'If not, maybe I can dig into some of my father's old projects. There might be something in there that could help us.'
Thursday, October 9th 2008
Another school day, another day of Ryuden watching students mill about after classes. Today, however, Mitsuru had notified him that she'd be late once more. With this knowledge in hand, he made sure to stop by the school shop and pick up a snack or two to tie him over until dinner. He went with something sweet and something salty, melon bread and a bag of chips. Since he didn't know what dinner would be he opted for water to drink, just in case he wanted soda with dinner.
Ryuden was leaning against a pillar in the main entrance, enjoying his chips, and watching the students.
"Do you miss it, Ryuden?"
'It's weird. At the time, it was always a pain getting up for school, studying all the time, having to socialize…'
"But?" Setanta could tell there was more to be said.
'Maybe it's due to me never finishing, but I feel a but resentful. Like, things would have turned out differently if dad hadn't died.'
"It is true. However, had your father's death not come to pass, you most likely would not have been at the docks on the night of your awakening to the dark hour, and we may not have met at all."
'...I…yeah, you're right, but it doesn't change how I feel when looking at these students.'
"Far be it from me to tell you how to feel."
"Hey dude, got a second?" A voice spoke, interrupting Ryudens internal conversation. Looking at the person in question, Ryuden saw a tall, lanky boy in the school uniform, possibly a first year if he had to guess. His only standout feature was his baseball cap.
"Sure, what's up?"
The boy fidgeted a little, "So, like, my friend and I have seen you around school a bunch. We, uh, we were wondering…what's your deal?"
Ryuden tilted his head, "My deal?"
"Yeah, like, why are you here? You're not dressed like a student. My friend asked one of the teachers, and they said you're a security guard, but you're not dressed like one of them either."
Ryuden silently listened.
"Also, and this one might just be the rumor mill, some students said they've seen you spending a lot of time next to the Mitsuru Kirijo."
Ryuden didn't answer immediately, instead he ate another chip. Once finished, he smiled, "What's your name?"
"H-huh?" The boy faltered for a moment.
"Don't worry, I don't bite, but I'd like to know who I'm talking to."
The boy took a deep breath, calming himself down, "I'm Junpei Iori, first year."
Ryuden smiled, "I'm Ryuden Yamamoto. I've gotta say, I like you already Junpei, you're the first student here with the guts to just come up to me and ask what my deal is." Junpei exhaled like he was holding his breath, slouching over. Ryuden laughed, "Relax, as I said, I don't bite."
Junpei stood up straight, "Thank God. Not gonna lie, I was a bit nervous."
"I could tell," Ryuden ate another chip.
"So, umm, can you tell me?" Junpei asked.
"Tell you what?" Ryuden was screwing with him, he couldn't help it, Junpei seemed like the type of guy who would have some great reactions to this type of wordplay.
Junpei sighed, "Why are you here? The whole thing I talked about before?"
Ryuden chuckled, "I'm just messing with ya. Sorry, you just seem like the type that would have some funny reactions."
Junpei scratched his cheek, "Ehh-hehe, yeah…" Looks like Ryuden was spot on.
"So to answer your question…I am employed by the Kirijo Group as a bodyguard."
Ryuden could see the gears in Junpei's head spinning before it clicked, "Oh, that explains everything!"
"Looks like you figured it out."
"You're a bodyguard for Kirijo-san, aren't you?"
"Hit the nail on the head," Ryuden said, grabbing and eating another chip.
"That explains why you're seen with her so much, and why you hang around the school. That ought-a quiet the rumors," Junpei said with a smirk.
That did catch Ryudens interest, "Out of curiosity, what DID the rumors say about me?"
'This should be good,' Ryuden thought to himself.
"Eh, nothing too crazy. Things like you're her fiancé keeping an eye on her, or a crazed stalker. One of them said you're blackmailing her into a relationship."
The last one made Ryuden laugh out loud, "Me? Blackmail her? Trust me when I say there's no way in hell she'd EVER let someone blackmail her."
Junpei cracked a smile, "Yeah, I didn't believe that one for a second. Kirijo-san seems too proud to let someone get away with something like that."
"Damn right," Ryuden said with a smile, "She's a great person and I'm proud to serve as her bodyguard."
Junpei nodded, and looked like he had more to say.
"Hey, Iori!" Another male voice shouted while coming up to the pair, "We still heading to the arcade?"
Junpei's face looked like he had another realization, "Ah, crap, I forgot! Sorry, let's go." Junpei waved to Ryuden, "See ya later, Yamamoto-san."
Ryuden returned the wave, "Take it easy Iori-san. Have fun at the arcade." Ryuden watched as the two students left the school.
'What a lively guy,' Ryuden thought while finishing his chips, 'Wouldn't mind another chat with him…' he looked at the clock on the wall. 'Still got an hour…wonder if the music room is still open?'
Just like the last time they left late, Mitsuru again took Ryuden out to eat. He was not given a choice in the matter, they were eating out. He was, however, given the honor of choosing where they ate. Tonight, Ryuden was feeling ramen.
"Two specials please," Ryuden ordered.
"Coming right up!" came the reply.
Mitsuru was looking around, taking in the sights and sounds of yet another, "unfamiliar food establishment." Ryuden took notice.
"This place is a lot less Western, right? Has that distinct feeling that makes it Japanese," he commented, trying to start up a conversation.
"Oh, yes. I suppose it makes sense a ramen shop feels the way it does. Though I wonder, how do you think places like these perform in other parts of the world?" Mitsuru questioned.
"Hmm, I don't know, but I'd think any tasty food will do good no matter where you are in the world," Ryuden reasoned. He'd never been outside Japan, so he didn't know.
"You said before your father was American, right?"
Ryuden nodded, "Yeah, he was."
"Did he ever show you any American foods? Homemade food, I mean."
Thinking of his dad was still a bit of a sore spot, but he could still think of the happier times without feeling too burdened.
"Oh yeah, dad only knew a handful of dishes, but what he did know he cooked great. Guess it helped that his family heritage was Italian."
"Italian? Really?" Mitsuru was intrigued.
"Yeah, in the early 1900s his, I think great great grandparents, immigrated from Italy. Though I can't remember where in Italy."
"They say that America is a melting pot of cultures, it looks like your father's family is one such example."
"I wish I could have met them, but like I said before, something happened that soured their relationship with dad. To this day I still don't know what it was."
"Your mother hasn't told you?"
"I'm not sure because I HAVE asked before. Either she doesn't know or won't tell me."
Seeing that there weren't too many places to take the conversation from there, Mitsuru decided to change topics, "I know between watching me and…club activities," She said with some emphasis, "you probably don't have much free time, do you?"
"Not too much, but don't worry about it. I figured that would be the case when I signed up for the job. Besides, it's still more free time than I had prior," Ryuden was grateful for even a little free time.
"You have more free time now? Considering the amount of time you spend simply waiting at school I find that hard to believe."
"I was working two jobs just trying to help mom keep the house. Whatever time I wasn't working I was sleeping. No time for friends, hobbies, or anything of the sort. It was a tough time, very tough, but we got through it."
"I see, I'm glad it worked out for you two," Mitsuru said with a sad smile. Having come from money, she couldn't imagine the amount of work he and his mother put in simply to live, but she was cognizant enough to realize she couldn't relate to him in that regard.
"Order up!"
"Oh good, here comes our food," Ryuden said happily. He leaned over towards Mitsuru, "Just follow my lead, ramen is easy." Mitsuru nodded.
The two of them received their food. As Ryuden ate his ramen, Mitsuru studied him and copied his actions, ensuring she'd eat it correctly all the way down to the broth.
…
"Now THAT was some good ramen," Ryuden said after they ate. He and Mitsuru had jointly agreed to walk back to the dorm after their meal.
"I must admit, it was very delicious. Pity I couldn't get the recipe," Mitsuru lamented.
"You'll be hard pressed to get a chef like that to give away their secrets. Their recipes are their livelihood after all."
There was a few seconds of silence between them.
"Yamamoto-san, when we were talking earlier, you mentioned you had some hobbies?" She attempted to strike up another conversation.
"Oh, yeah, of course I do. Why the sudden interest?" Asked Ryuden.
"I still want to see if there's anything that might allude to your connection with Setanta," Mitsuru answered. "This is just another angle that I thought of."
"I see. Well, I don't have any problem telling you." He said while stretching his arms in the air. "Well, like most guys my age I enjoy video games, I have one of my consoles in my room." Mitsuru nodded, listening intently. "However, I recently rediscovered my love for playing piano."
That interested Mitsuru, "Really? You play piano?"
"It's been a bit since I've really practiced, but I played a bit when the music club asked right before the festival. I also stopped by earlier today."
"Playing a musical instrument has always been something I considered, but my schedule never fully allowed me the time to learn."
"I have a feeling you'd be good at it, and I'm not just saying that because of your studious nature."
"Really? What makes you say that?" Now she was genuinely curious.
"Well, take a look at your hands." Mitsuru did as instructed, "You have long, slender fingers. There are plenty of great musicians with large hands, but typically having hands like yours is a plus."
Mitsuru was still studying her hands. "When did you notice that?"
"About your hands?" Ryuden asked for clarification, to which Mitsuru nodded, "I noticed it during one of our morning sessions."
'Right,' Mitsuru realized, 'When he has to make contact with me for a minute in the morning.'
"Speaking of, thanks again for agreeing to help me with it," he said with sincerity.
"You're welcome. Now back to the topic at hand. Piano, anything else?" Mitsuru wasn't ashamed about the contact in the morning, but was eager to see if there was anything she could extrapolate from his hobbies.
"Well, there IS one other thing. I tell you this because I know you won't judge, but I like watching sumo," Ryuden admitted.
"Oh, you watch sumo? My father watches it from time to time, but I can't say I've ever sat down and really watched it before," she could remember when she was younger and her father would have it on in the background when there was a major tournament.
"Really? I wouldn't have guessed your father was a sumo fan. Guess I have something else to talk about during my next report, lucky me," Ryuden laughed. He didn't know many guys around his age, but if he had to guess, he wouldn't have pegged them as the sump type.
"You should, I'm sure he'd love to gush about it. I know he's a avid fan of Asashoryu," Misturu remembered that.
"Really? I wonder what his thoughts are about his injury."
"Injury? He got hurt?"
"Yup, elbow injury. It's doubtful he'll make it to the tournament next month, which sucks, cause I like it when he and Hakuho go head to head."
Mitsuru could see that Ryuden was getting excited just talking about it. "Your enthusiasm is very refreshing. It's always nice to see someone passionate about something they like."
"Well, what about you, ojou-sama? What are your hobbies?" Ryuden turned the question on her.
"Me? Well, we both know I fence, which I do enjoy. The fact that it helps with SEES is just an added bonus," Mitsuru was able to answer without much thought.
"Your dedication to it is clear when we spar. I can't hold back too much or you close the distance way too fast. Anything else? I'm sure there's something else more on the relaxing side."
"Hmm," She thought for a moment, "I've been told by others that I'm a connoisseur when it comes to tea. I think they're just embellishing."
"Oh, that's a really useful hobby! Drinking tea can help you focus or relax depending on the leaves and such, right?"
Mitsuru smiled, "Quite right, as well as how long you brew them and much more."
"You should see your smile right now, ojou-sama," Ryuden commented.
"Huh?"
"Your smile when you talked about tea just now was, perhaps, the happiest smile I've seen on you since I started working for you." Ryuden smiled back, "It's nice to see you also have something you're passionate about, outside of SEES."
Mitsuru looked up at the night sky, "I suppose you're right. I never gave it much thought before…" her face turned serious.
"Something the matter, ojou-sama?" Ryuden asked, concerned he may have said something to upset her.
"Well, it's…what you said just put something into perspective…" she didn't answer.
"Is everything alright?" Asked Ryuden.
"I'll be alright. Just need some time to think. I'm not upset at you, if that's what you're worried about. You just gave me something to think about. That's all."
Ryuden nodded, "Alright, I won't press the issue. Just know I'm here if you need someone to talk to."
"Thank you, Yamamoto-san," Mitsuru answered.
'Besides,' she thought to herself. 'How does someone admit they can't remember the last time they were truly, TRULY, happy…'

Dark Hour
For Ryuden, today had gone by like any other. Wake up, do the one minute routine with Mitsuru to fulfill the geas, accompany her to school, kill some time, and accompany her back to the dorm.
Tonight was not a group training night, but Ryuden still felt the need to be active. He was outside the dorm, swinging his sword while keeping his shield in position.
'Gotta be ready. Always be ready. We never know when the next Laochra will strike.'
"Unfortunately, if these ghosts of the past aren't showing up EXACTLY from my past, I'm not sure my memories will be of much help," Setanta spoke up.
'Yeah, fighting Dúngals was not what we expected. So we should be prepared for anything, even if it's the worst case scenario,' Ryuden thought while continuing his training.
"Dare I ask what you consider the worst case?"
'If we have to fight more intelligent Laochra than three at once.'
"Aye, that would be rough, but I believe you'd be fine."
'Really? You have that much faith in me?'
"Of course. I was able to do so, so by extension you should as well." Ryuden was silent, "Though if it really came down to it, I could offer you a geas that would tilt the battle heavily in your favor."
'Oh? You've got a geas that strong?'
"Interested?"
'You might as well tell me what it is first, and what the stipulations would be.'
Setanta explained the geas to Ryuden.
'Yikes…that could just as easily backfire.'
"It could, but it would ensure your survival."
'Would there be a way to stop it?'
"There's always a way to stop it, but I can't make it for you. You'd have to find it on your own."
Ryuden stopped his training, thinking about what he discussed with his persona.
"Yamamoto-san, are you training alone tonight?" The voice of Mitsuru got Ryudens attention.
"Ah, ojou-sama. Yeah, we can't be too prepared to fight." Taking a look at her, Ryuden realized she was geared for combat. "Did you detect one?" He asked, getting serious.
Mitsuru shook her head, "No, I did not. I came out here to ask if I could train with you tonight."
Ryuden was a little surprised, "We just had a group session last night, are you sure you want another one?"
Her eyes didn't show a bit of hesitation, "Yes, I'm sure. It's as you said, we can't be too prepared."
He chuckled in response, "I suppose you're right. Well, come and get me." He said, hitting his sword against his shield.
Mitsuru descended the stairs, drawing her sword. She pointed it at Ryuden, "En garde!"
She charged, and their blades clashed. They were so engrossed with starting combat, they didn't realize Ryuden was using his sword this time. Normally, they would spar with him using his spear.
What was normal was Mitsuru pushing the attack. Since she didn't have to contend with a spear, she was physically closer to Ryuden. Mitsuru realized this fact first, and thought of how to use it to her advantage. She waited for Ryuden to strike, the put her hands and sword up to deflect the blow. When she did so, she charged forward, throwing her shoulder into Ryudens chest. Having not expected the attack, Ryuden was ill prepared to stop her. When they collided, Ryuden fell back. Mitsuru prepared to use this as her golden opportunity to strike and take the win. However, what she hadn't taken into account was Ryudens shield hitting her as he fell. The end result was Ryuden falling onto his back with Mitsuru landing right on top of him, her face at his chest level.
"Ugh," having dropped his sword, Ryuden put his hand on the back of his head, "That one hurt." He then realized that Mitsuru had fallen on him as well. "You okay, ojou-sama?"
"I'm unharmed, mostly." Mitsuru also realized the position they were in. "Oh! My apologies." She quickly got to her feet, doing her best not to touch Ryuden anymore than she already had.
"It's fine, it's all part of the sparring process." Once Mitsuru was off him, Ryuden got to his feet as well. He saw Mitsuru was averting her gaze. 'Hmm…was she bothered coming into contact with me? Either way, not going to touch that one.' He thought to himself. "Ready for round 2? You're not gonna be able to pull that fast one on me again."
Mitsuru took a deep breath, "...yes, let's go again." She turned around, and her face was serious again.
"Alright ojou-sama, en garde," He said, readying his weapons.
…
…
Mitsuru and Ryuden had finished their battle. Mitsuru had landed a few good blows on Ryuden, but nothing to the extent that she was aiming for. She sighed as she wiped the sweat from her brow.
"Are you sure you're okay, ojou-sama?" asked Ryuden, concerned.
"...to be honest, I'm annoyed by my lack of progress. After more than a month of training I was hoping to fare better against you."
Ryuden understood her concern, "I see. If it's any consolation, I'm sure you'd be winning a majority of our matches if we could use our persona."
"Is that your honest opinion, or are you just trying to cheer me up?" She asked with a bit of bite.
"I'm being honest. There's no point in me lying to you, ojou-sama. We both know what we're fighting for, and what our enemy is capable of."
"...right, please forgive my rudeness. I'm just…"
"Worried? Concerned?"
"Both sound right…we're getting stronger, but it's still just the three of us. What if we have to fight another large group of Laochra shadows, but all with the intelligence of Orlám? Will we be strong enough to win?"
Mitsuru was right to be concerned. She was mirroring the same concerns he and Setanta had just shared.
"Ojou-sama, you have every right to be worried. In fact, Setanta and I had been discussing the topic before you came outside."
"Hmm, then you know exactly what I'm talking about."
"I do, and while I can't claim that we'll come out unscathed, I can promise that we'll be in the best condition possible whenever we have to fight. If you want to train with me more, then I'm more than willing," Ryuden tried to encourage her, despite the fact he too was worried. He was sure Akihiko would also agree with them.
Mitsuru sighed, "Thank you Yamamoto-san, I'm sorry for burdening you with my worries."
"No apologies necessary. I'm here to help you however I can, both as your bodyguard and a member of SEES," Ryuden stood up straight, trying to seem as confident as possible.
His actions had the desired effect, Mitsuru smiled, "Thanks again, Yamamoto-san."
Despite everything they had been through so far, they were still maintaining their professional relationship. It would take a little more time before this relationship would change.
Sunday, October 19th, 2008
"She wants additional training with you?" Takeharu Kirijo asked Ryuden over the phone.
"Yes Kirijo-sama, she specifically asked for extra sessions of just her and I. She seems determined to defeat me in a sparring match," Ryuden answered his boss.
"Mitsuru has always been competitive when it comes to things like this, even if she won't admit it, but I have a feeling there's more to it than that."
"I agree Kirijo-sama, mind if I share my thoughts?"
"Go ahead."
"I think it's because the Laochra fight so similarly to me. So far, the only times she's fought one with a high level of intelligence, it's been with me taking the helm. I think she wants to be ready to fight one solo if the need arises," Ryuden only surmised this as the case, but still felt strongly enough about it to share his thoughts.
"I see…I'm inclined to agree with you. Do you think she's ready to fight one on her own?"
"Only if she uses her persona. Without it she's at a disadvantage," Ryuden hoped she could find a maneuver that would let her get the best of spears, but until then she'd have to be cautious.
"Hmm, then continue to train with her until you're both satisfied."
"Yes, Kirijo-sama."
"Anything else to report?" Asked Takeharu.
"Nothing else to report, Kirijo-sama, but I do have a question if you don't mind?"
"What is it?"
"Ojou-sama told me you're also a fan of sumo," said Ryuden.
"Oh did she now?" there was a hint of humor in his voice.
"She did. She also told me you're a fan of Asashoryu?" He posed it as a question.
"I was, up until last year," Takeharu answered firmly.
"Was it the match fixing allegations, or the football incident?"
Takeharu groaned, "We both know those allegations were bullshit."
Ryuden hummed, "I agree with you there. So, it was the football thing wasn't it?"
"That was the point I threw my hands up and said 'no more.' Backing out due to injury is fine, all rishiki get hurt and miss a day somewhere in their career; but backing out of a tournament claiming injury, and then showing up to a charity football game? No way a Yokozuna can get away with doing something like that," Takeharu mini ranted.
"I'm in complete agreement there, but he IS still outstanding when he fights."
"Yeah he is…but Hakuho is really making a name for himself."
"Oh yeah, just over a year in and he's really proving himself worthy of the title."
"Mark my words Yamamoto, that man is going to go on a hot streak soon. You can see it in his eyes. The November tournament is his, no two ways about it."
"Especially since it doesn't look like Asashoryu will be competing with that arm injury."
"Yeah, I can't wait to see how he does. Anyway, I hate to cut this short, but I've got a meeting coming up that I can't reschedule," said Takeharu. "Continue what you've been doing, and keep me informed if there are any changes."
"Understood, Kirijo-sama," at Ryudens confirmation, Takeharu hung up the phone. Ryuden took a deep breath, "If nothing else, it feels good that he trusts me."
Putting his phone away, Ryuden stepped out of his room and into the living room of the dorm. It was quiet. Akihiko had made plans of some sort, and Mitsuru was visiting company headquarters for reasons she didn't disclose. She didn't need his protection in a building full of guards, so she gave Ryuden the day off. He thought of what to do for a moment…and decided to send a text.
Ryuden: Hey, I'm off today. Mind if I come visit?
"I'm so glad you had time to visit today, Ryuden," said Asami Yamamoto with a smile on her face as she embraced her son.
"Me too, I was long overdue for a visit," Ryuden said, returning the hug.
"Well, come on in. It's still your home too, so don't be a stranger," Asami said, trying to pull him to the living room.
"Okay, okay, at least let me take my shoes off first," he said with some laughter.
Eventually the two of them settled into the living room. Ryuden sat down on the couch while his mother took a recliner.
"So, how have you been? Your phone calls and texts are good, but it's always better to see and hear from you in person," asked Asami, happy to see Ryuden again.
"Things have been good. Nothing crazy really happens during the day hours. Kirijo-san attends school so I just act as a glorified security guard."
"What about after school, and days off?"
"After school she either has club activities or student council stuff. Sometimes it causes us to get back late, but recently she's been treating me to dinner when that happens."
"Really? Mitsuru Kirijo treating you to dinner?" Asami asked, curious.
"Relax, it's nothing fancy, just fast food."
Asami made a face that said: There's more to it than that.
"You've told me about Kirijo-san a few times over the phone, mind telling me some more?" Asked Asami.
"Well, she's exceptionally studious. Kinda jealous to be honest. Oh, and her English is very good. We had a conversation in English just before her exams to help her study, she's very fluent," Ryuden talked like he was proud of her.
"Really? How are your English skills, young man? Still keeping up?" Asami said, testing Ryuden.
"I wouldn't want to lose this skill, too valuable, and too sentimental," came his reply.
Asami had a soft smile on her face, "I thought about it more while you've been gone. Your father would be proud of you for taking this job." Ryuden didn't respond. "I'll always fear for your safety, but as your mother I'll always worry about you, even if you worked a regular office job." She laughed at her attempt at humor. "Enough about me though, tell me more about your friends at the dorm."
Ryuden nodded, "Right, well, I've told you about Kirijo-san plenty of times. Other than her there's only one other boy, Akihiko Sanada. He's part of the boxing club and seems to take his physical strength and health extremely seriously. However, he doesn't talk about his part at all. From what little I've gathered, I think he may have been an orphan, but I can't say with certainty."
"Mmh, well how is he at the dorm?"
"He's respectful, cleans up after himself. I think the most we've done together is running and sparring."
"Sparring?" Asked Asami.
"W-well, he boxes, so we practice together," Ryuden recovered quickly, "I'm no professional, but I can at least throw a punch properly." His mother was eying him with suspension.
"I hope you both at least wear protective gear when you spar," said Asami.
"Of course. The last thing either of us needs is a broken hand or wrist." They were interrupted by the sound of Ryudens stomach. "Hehe, sorry. I haven't eaten lunch yet.
Asami smiled, "Well then, let's fix you something to eat. Do you want to stay for dinner as well?"
"I would love to."

Dark Hour
The dark hour had just commenced. Ryuden and Akihiko stepped outside the dorm. Akihiko was prepped as normal, but Ryuden was carrying his equipment with him, placing it at the bottom of the stoop.
"Bout time we follow up on this," said Akihiko.
"Right, especially after lying to my mom. At least after tonight it won't TECHNICALLY be a lie anymore."
Akihiko laughed, "I guess so. Here, catch." He tossed Ryuden a pair of boxing gloves. "We should have done this sooner, but with everything going on I forgot about it."
"Nah, no worries. What matters is that we get to do it," Ryuden said as he started getting one of the gloves on.
"That's the spirit, once we get started we can-"
The door opened quickly, "Change of plans gentlemen. We've got company tonight," said Mitsuru as she left the dorm. Ryuden dropped the boxing gloves and started getting his equipment attached.
"Not again," Akihiko groaned. "How many this time? Five? Ten? Twenty?" He said, aggrieved.
Mitsuru shook her head, "I believe it's only two this time."
Ryuden was almost ready, "You say two; but if I had to take a guess, I'd wager both of them have names."
Both Mitsuru and Akihiko nodded, "While I have no proof, my instincts are telling me the same thing."
Akihiko punched in fist into his open hand, "Then you and I will fight one while Yamamoto fights the other. A straight up fight suits me better anyway."
"While I appreciate your enthusiasm, Akihiko, let's remember that they are still very dangerous. Don't let your guard down, despite our training," Mitsuru warned.
"Yes, ma'am," answered Akihiko.
"Alright, I'm ready to move out," Ryuden spoke up.
"Good," Mitsuru put her 'leader face' on, "There's only two this time, but keep your guard up. Let's commence the operation."
…
The SEES trio made their way towards where Mitsuru sensed the shadows. They only slowed down when they approached the Iwatodai train station.
"They were running along the tracks earlier, but I think they stopped somewhere around here," Mitsuru said, looking around for the two shadows.
"Eyes peeled then, maybe an ambush?" Akihiko asked while looking around.
Ryuden didn't say anything, but continued looking around cautiously.
"...it's far too quiet. I agree with Akihiko, watch for a surprise attack."
They all started making there way close to the station proper…
…
"GET DOWN!"
Ryuden dove to the ground the instant he heard Setanta shout. The moment he hit the ground, a spear was impaled in the ground right where he had been a moment ago.
"Yamamoto!" Akihiko and Mitsuru both shouted and ran to his side.
"Got your attention this time, didn't I?!"
Ryuden got to his feet quickly. Looking up, they saw a Laochra standing on the station roof. It, apparently, was the source of the spear now embedded in the ground.
'Setanta, recognize him?' Ryuden asked, hoping for a quick answer.
"He looks familiar, but I can't recall…"
It was unfortunate, but not necessary at the moment. He could probably fish the info out of the shadow. Speaking of, they saw another shadow walk up to the side of the Laochra on the roof. As far as they could tell, it looked like it was also intelligent.
"Well, we found them. Rather, they found us. What's the plan?" asked Akihiko.
"We'll have to get up to the rooftop. There's bound to be an access point somewhere. We might have to break a door open," said Mitsuru, taking the lead.
Before the trio could make their move, one of the Laochra jumped off the roof, landing a short distance from the group.
"Oh, NOW I recognize him! That's Maenén," Setanta said before laughing.
"Oh, him," Ryuden said, trying not to grin. "Ojou-sama, I'll go fight the one on the roof, you two take this guy."
"You recognize him, Yamamoto? Any advice?" Mitsuru asked.
Her question inadvertently made Ryuden laugh a bit, "Yeah, that's Maenén. My advice? Throw apples at him."
Both Mitsuru and Akihiko faltered at the strange reply. "Apples?" Mitsuru asked, "why apples?"
Ryuden laughed again, "One, that's what killed him, so it's bound to piss him off. Two, Setanta and I will find it hilarious." He was joking, but his weapons were out and he was ready to fight
"Now's not the time for jokes, Yamamoto," Mitsuru scolded.
"Sorry, just trying to alleviate the tension. Let's charge Maenén. I'll give you an opening on my way to the one up top."
"Alright, be careful. Ready, Akihiko?" Mitsuru confirmed.
Akihiko punched his fists together while smirking. "Let's wipe the floor with this guy."
"Good. Yamamoto, charge!" Mitsuru gave the order
"As you command!" Ryuden led the charge towards Maenén, Mitsuru and Akihiko close behind him.
Maenén looked pleased, "Finally, the fight I've been waiting for! Come at me, Hero of Ulster!"
'Perfect, keep your attention on me,' Ryuden thought as he charged.
Right before Ryuden entered the range of Maenéns spear, he crouched before jumping up and over Maenén entirely.
"Wha?! Hey!" Maenén watched Ryuden soaring over him. "Get back here!" Distracted as he was, he was ill prepared for the sword and fist that collided with him. Akihiko had aimed for the face, Mitsuru had aimed for the heart. To their fortune both attacks connected, but much to their chagrin, Maenén barely flinched, even though there was a rapier piercing him.
Twisting, Maenén batted away Akihiko with his shield, and did the same to Mitsuru with his spear.
"I am not here to fight children! I've come for the one carrying the spirit of Ulster!" Maenén shouted angrily. However, neither member of SEES could understand him.
"That didn't seem to phase him much. Next time I'll hit harder," Akihiko said, regrouping with Mitsuru.
"Treat it like our fights with Yamamoto," said Mitsuru, taking command.
"You got it," Akihiko said with a smirk. "The last group of these guys didn't stand much of a chance. Let's see what you're capable of Maenén," he said, goading the resurrected warrior.
Maenén seemed disinterested, "I said I have no interest in fighting children." He turned around in preparation to chase after Ryuden. The SEES duo used this moment to strike. Right as their attacks were about to land, Maenén rolled to the side, avoiding them completely. "Do you insist on getting in my way?!" He shouted angrily.
While they couldn't understand him, Mitsuru was pretty sure she understood his actions. Motioning for Akihiko to follow her lead, she moved herself in between Maenén and the train station, blocking him from following Ryuden. Akihiko followed her movements.
"If it's Yamamoto you want, you'll have to get through us first," said Mitsuru with determination.
Maenén grinded his teeth, "So that's how it is. Very well!" Maenén readied his spear, "I shall grind you both to dust!"
Ryuden landed on the other side of Maenén, and ran for the station. He could hear the Laochra calling out to him, followed by the sounds of conflict.
'They can take him together, I'm sure of it.'
"I agree, their teamwork is exceptional. Now focus on your opponent on the roof." Setanta reminded him.
As Ryuden reached the stairs leading up to the station he crouched again, this time focusing his strength, and jumped with enough might to clear the roof. Landing on top, he saw the other Laochra waiting patiently.
"Who do I have the pleasure of facing in combat?" said Ryuden, trying to get his opponent's name.
The Laochra pulled out his spear, and in his other hand a shortsword, forgoing a shield altogether. "You wouldn't recognize me would you? Considering how you first killed me without allowing me the chance to fight!" it shouted angrily before charging.
Due to the nature of dual wielding, Ryuden was put on the defensive to start. Their spears were playing keep away, while he used his shield to protect himself from fierce sword strikes.
'Damn, not enough time to summon Setanta this way. I'm on my own until I get an opening,' Ryuden thought while doing his best to block and guard the attacks coming in his direction. Despite the ferocity of the attacks, Ryuden didn't take a single step back as doing so would only push him towards the edge of the roof. He knew he'd survive such a fall, but it wouldn't be worth the pain and suffering, especially if he still had to fight afterwards.
They continued clashing until the Laochra tried for a vertical strike with his sword. Ryuden blocked the strike while pushing his shield upwards. The shadow recovered by thrusting again with its spear. Ryuden released the grip on his spear, grabbing hold of his opponent's weapon as it passed to the left of his torso. Once Ryuden got a hold of the spear, he pulled as hard as he could. The Laochra hadn't expected such an unusual tactic. Combined with the fact that it had just thrust the spear forward, it was unable to prevent Ryuden from pulling the weapon out of its hand. In one swift movement, Ryuden spun, throwing the spear as far away as he could, before completing his spin and facing his opponent once more, finally stepping back from his shadowy adversary.
They were both tense, waiting for the other to make a move. Both took cursory glances at Ryudens' discarded spear. They both knew that having it would be a boon, but that reaching down to grab it would mean leaving an opening to attack. The two fighters stared each other down.
"Hmm, now that I look at him, I believe that's Orlám, but don't hold me to it," Setana chimed in.
'That doesn't tell me much, but thanks,' Ryuden thought in response to his persona. 'I have an idea, but it's not the safest…' Ryuden moved towards the spear, and Orlám mirrored his movement. Orlám attempted to hit Ryuden with his sword as they closed in. Ryuden jumped out of the way before swiping at the now open Orlám. The swing missed, and Orlám swung his arm into Ryudens sword arm, causing him to drop the weapon. Out of desperation, Ryuden used his shield to hit Orláms arm, disarming him as well.
'Well, there goes my plan,' Ryuden lamented.
The two then began a flurry of uncoordinated punches while they were still close. It wasn't until Ryuden tried to hit Orlám with his shield again that the shadowy warrior disengaged.
Both swords were at Ryuden's feet, but Orlám was making a break for the spear from before.
'Now's my chance!' He drew his evoker.
"Setanta!"
Setanta came forth in a burst of power, charging Orlám. The Laochra either disregarded the danger he was in, or didn't know the extent of it. Orlám had fetched the spear, and was ready to continue fighting. However, the moment he turned around he was impaled by the Setantas spear.
Ryuden wasted no time. Putting his evoker away, he grabbed the two swords from the ground and charged. Orlám struck out at Setanta, who vanished before the spear could impale him. Ryuden struck twice. The first attack, Orlám lost his arm. The second attack, Orlám lost his head.
With the vengeful shadow defeated, Ryuden sighed in relief, and dropped the now disappearing sword that once belonged to his opponent. Ryuden thought over the whole fight and swiftly came to a conclusion.
'Training in hand to hand combat is FAR different from actually fighting someone with it. I need to talk to Sanada about that,' he thought to himself.
After catching his breath, Ryuden gathered his belongings and went to the edge of the roof. He could see Akihiko and Mitsuru fighting Maenén. Mitsuru looked pretty bad, but based on how she was standing, she had plenty of fight left in her. He'd let them fight on their own, he knew they could handle it. If for some reason they couldn't…then he'd step in.
Maenén readied his spear, "I shall grind you both to dust!" He shouted before charging.
'He's fast,' both students thought.
Akihiko and Mitsuru had positioned themselves so Akihiko would be on Maenéns right, where his spear would be. That way, he could create more openings that could be exploited. They got to work immediately. Maenén, angry as he was, attempted to skewer Akihiko, but his attack was deflected when Akihiko pushed the shaft of the spear away. At the same time, Mitsuru rounded her opponent, getting behind him and attempting multiple strikes. Akihiko saw her movements, and made sure not to press forward too far. The last thing they needed was unintended friendly fire.
Instead, Akihiko tried to keep Maenén focused on him. It worked well, up until Mitsuru stabbed their opponent three times. It was obvious that Maenén was getting further enraged at this opposition. He swung his spear 360 degrees around him, forcing both SEES members to evade. Mitsuru jumped back to avoid the strike, while Akihiko ducked. While ducking down, Akihiko made his next move known.
"Polydeuces!"
His persona appeared above him, and with a swipe of his arm called down a bolt of electricity. As the electric strike hit, Maenén grit his teeth, and made to stab Akihiko again.
Akihiko was barely able to roll out of the way, the tip of the spear ripping the side of his uniform.
"Penthesilea!"
Mitsuru continued to attack, this time with her persona. It shot a large ball of ice at Maenéns back. However, the attack seemingly did nothing.
"Tch, ineffective," Mitsuru said out loud. Despite the attack not hurting him, Maenén turned around and gave Mitsuru a look of anger.
"Normally I wouldn't fight a woman, but if you're in my way then you'll die like any other!"
In the blink of an eye, Maenén ran up to Mitsuru and stabbed at her. Mitsuru dodged to the side, then moved forward to stab Maenén in return. Just like her spars with Ryuden, she was stopped by a shield.
There was a bang in the distance, and Maenén was punched by Polydeuces. Maenén was hit in the face, but remained on his feet, getting further enraged. He threw his spear at Polydeuces, gutting it. Mitsuru could hear Akihiko yell, having felt the pain of the strike. She attempted to pull her evoker out, but was surprised by Maenén kicking her just above the stomach.
She fell backwards with the wind getting knocked out of her. As she took a quick breath, she saw Maenén kneeling above her with a fist coming in her direction. Mitsuru attempted to block using her sword, but needed two hands to support her rapier from the heavy blows. However, her blocks were ineffective when Maenén struck her with his shield, the attack hitting her chest and face.
Despite the pain, Mitsuru continued to struggle underneath the angry warrior. She received a few more punches to the torso and head, until she was able to get her rapier through the barrage of attacks. Her sword embedded itself into Maenéns left shoulder, causing him to grab at it with his right hand out of instinct. This drop of his guard was all it took for Akihiko to punch Maenén in the face, knocking him off Mitsuru. Akihiko offered a hand and helped her get back on her feet.
Her face hurt. She was sure it looked bruised, and she could feel some blood running down her face. Her chest also hurt, but it thankfully felt like her ribs held together.
"Damn, you alright? You took a few nasty hits," Akihiko said, concerned, but keeping his focus on the Laochra.
Wordlessly, Mitsuru pulled out her evoker and summoned Penthesilea. She was covered in a warm green glow. It helped ease the pain, and closed some cuts, but the blood didn't come out of her uniform.
"I'm fine. It seems he's immune to ice, so Penthesilea will have to be used for support only," Mitsuru remained stoic.
"Electricity didn't do too much either. Guess we'll be doing this the old fashioned way," Akihiko was still raring to go, having overcome the attack from earlier.
Mitsuru stole a quick glance towards the rooftop. She was able to see Ryuden approaching the edge of the roof. It looked like he had finished his fight, and was poised to step in, but he didn't.
'I'm sure he wants to see if we can finish this fight on our own.' Mitsuru thought to herself, 'We'll prove our strength to him here and now.'
Now returning her focus fully to the fight. She saw Maenén unbuckle his shield, and then throw it at them like a giant deadly frisbee. She and Akihiko were able to dodge it without difficulty, as the attack was very telegraphed. As soon as the dodged, they saw Maenén was now dual wielding his spear and sword.
"I'll take the spear?" asked Akihiko.
"Yes, let's take him down," Mitsuru confirmed. She summoned her persona once more, getting another quick heal before she returned to combat. She wouldn't let this shadow get another hit on her.
All three combatants charged. Mitsuru parried Maenéns sword with her blade. She had to give him credit, his footwork was making it hard for her and Akihiko to create an opening. Every time they came close, he would quickly backpedal to gain some distance, then restart combat. It reminded her of…
'Yamamoto,' she knew he was watching. He expected them to win. He expected her to come out victorious tonight… She wouldn't disappoint him. She'd show him the fruits of their training.
"Akihiko, call Polydeuces!" She shouted in the middle of the fight.
"Shit, now?!" Akihiko yelled out as he tried closing the distance to attack the shadow again.
"Yes! Lightning attack! You'll know when!"
Akihiko wasn't sure, but trusted Mitsuru. He jumped back and pulled out his evoker.
"Wrong move!" Maenén attempted to both skewer and stab Mitsuru with both his weapons.
Mitsuru saw her opportunity. It was slim, and she would probably get hurt, but there was no doubt in her mind. She would go for it.
Mitsuru stepped forward, twisting her body in the process. Using both hands, she redirected her opponent's sword, and pushed his arm and blade upwards. During this process, she could feel the edge of the spear cutting across her back. She grit her teeth, there was no time for that. She saw Maenén had his blade in the air.
*BANG*
The sound of Akihiko's evoker reverberated through the night, and a lightning strike came down on Maenéns sword. While he may have been resistant to lightning, even he couldn't hold onto his blade when all the electricity from Polydeuces ran through it. Maenén reflexively let go of his sword.
Mitsuru had him right where she wanted him, she thrust her sword right into Maenéns throat, "Touché!" she shouted as she thrust. However, she didn't let up, and continued to push her blade in all the way to the guard. As she did so, Maenén fell backwards onto the ground. Mitsuru managed to catch herself, stopping her fall, but let go of her blade in the process. Thankfully it didn't matter, as Maenén began to disintegrate upon hitting the ground.
Watching the Laochra disappear, Mitsuru summoned Penthesilea once more to try and patch up some of her wounds.
"Damn, you were something else in that fight, Mitsuru. It was really impressive," Akihiko commented.
"Thank you. The fruits of our training at work," She said, still catching her breath. She heard something hit the ground, and turned her head to see it was Ryuden landing on the ground. 'Looks like he jumped off the roof. If it were anyone else I'd say that was reckless, but I'm sure he's fine.' "You seem fine, Yamamoto-san. Did your fight go well?"
Ryuden nodded, "As well as it could, but in my opinion I need more unarmed combat practice." He looked over to Akihiko, "Care to help me with that, Sanada-san?" He said with a grin, since all three knew the answer.
"Oh hell yeah, you and I HAVE to go a few rounds. I'll help turn you into a boxing machine in no time," Akihiko said excitedly.
"Jokes aside, are you alright ojou-sama?" Ryuden asked, concerned about her wellbeing.
"I'll live. I've been through worse," she touched her face, wincing when she touched a bruise, "Covering up these marks up tomorrow is going to be quite annoying."
"I'm no expert in makeup, but please let me know if there's anything I can do to help," offered Ryuden.
"I will, thank you Yamamoto-san."
Ryuden smiled, "That said, from what I saw you two did great."
"Not being able to use our persona on these guys is clearly a big disadvantage given their intelligence," Akihiko mentioned, "Glad we have you around to help keep us in shape." Akihiko stretched, and looked around. "Looks like we avoided doing any major damage too."
"We're fortunate in that regard," said Mitsuru, "Not that it's too hard to cover these things up, but it's hectic when trying to organize and inform multiple people about what the cover story is."
Ryuden was looking around. He felt good about their victory tonight, everyone fought well…so why was something bothering him?
"Yamamoto, you good?" Akihiko noticed Ryuden went quiet.
"I'm good, just…something is nagging at me, and I'm not sure what it is."
"Perhaps you'll think better after a good night's rest," Mitsuru said before wincing, "I know I need one."
"Yeah, maybe that'll help," the three departed the train station, heading back to the dorm for the night.
Had to take a break from writing due to life stuff. Sorry to say you should all expect that from me, but I write on my phone whenever I DO get the time. See you all soon!
