Chapter 18: Go With the Flow, Part 1.
Obligatory beach scene. How original.
-(Wyvern's Folly; Royal Palace, Northern Doraegon)-
(Ruby's POV)
It was already the next day since we stayed in Wyvern's Family palace.
Since we had the opportunity to sleep-in, I was the first to awaken as the clock already reached 11:00 AM, minus the jet lag from the time zone differences between Doraegon and Vale City. Getting off my bed, changing into a set of casual home clothes, then brushing my teeth, I opened the door to exit my bedroom to lean down on the wooden railings of the second-floor deck. Conveniently, I saw Wyvern open the door to his room as he still had his bedhead even with his changed tank top and shorts. I saw him jump down to the kitchen, as his room was closest to the corner where it was located and began to look around for what to cook. That was when I decided to head downstairs as well, but using the stairs instead of doing something kind of dangerous while above the decors and displays below.
Wyvern heard me walk down one of the stairs and gave a small wave before saying, "Good morning, Ruby!"
"Morning!" I replied energetically as a sign that I slept pretty well. "Looking for something to make for us?"
"Yeah. Wouldn't want Sybille to cook for all of us yet again. Especially from a young lady like her who is always busy." Wyvern chuckled dryly and opened the pantry to take a look at the assortment of ingredients and pre-made foods. Mostly instant noodles. "You up for something specific?"
"Well, considering what time it is, it's not really breakfast anymore. So…" I blanked off from my sentence as I began to search in the pantry too. "A balanced-out lunch like sandwiches or stir-fried noodles?" I recommended suggestions known to have a mix of carbohydrates, fats, protein, and vegetables.
"Wait! Hold on!" The voice of Schnell called out as she was seen on the second deck before jumping down, with Amelie tiredly walking out of the same room as her.
"Why must you always take the riskiest method of going down instead of using the stairs?" Amelie sighed, revealing this was a common occurrence of hers. Nevertheless, she went downstairs using the stairs unlike Schnell.
As soon as Schnell was in the kitchen with us, she shut the fridge and pantry door with a rather excited smile. "I know you guys are probably hungry right now. But maybe hold it off until we head down below the mesa this palace is on." She suggested.
Wyvern gave this look as if he already knew where this was going and chuckled lightly. "I see. You want to head down to our private beach."
"Yes! There's a cooler down there containing things we can barbeque!" Schnell fidgeted and dropped her nightgown, revealing that she was wearing her silver two-piece swimsuit underneath them. "And I'm already prepared~!"
My jaw dropped as I didn't expect her to be THIS ready. She probably planned this out beforehand and made sure to have it all set. "I can't believe you slept in that…"
Schnell nodded. "It's not even a big deal." She glanced over at Wyvern, who still kept that straight face as if he was used to this sort of twist and surprises. "You're not even surprised about seeing me wearing this? Boooooring."
Wyvern cleared his throat and dramatically acted flustered in an exaggerated fashion. "Oh no~! My virgin eyes can't withstand the sight before me~!"
Amelie grabbed a dish rag and threw it at Wyvern's face to shield his eyes. "Then stop staring, pervert!"
"Why are you mad at me when Schnell was the one that revealed herself like that?" He sighed while removing the rag off his face.
"Whatever." Amelie rolled her eyes and went to the nearby espresso machine to get herself some coffee.
"Anyway," Wyvern looked at Schnell and asked, "did you already have today planned out for the beach? Because you never told me about this."
She shook her head and chortled. "Believe it or not, your mom recommended this idea yesterday. Just to see how athletic and further check how social your friends are. The standard "get to know your friends" sort of thing."
"If we're going to play some games down there, be sure to go easy on Jaune." He said as it was perfect timing, glancing over at a door opening on the second deck, which was Jaune in his pajamas. "I don't want you to send the poor guy into a coma."
"Relax. Gyo, your parents, and I already agreed to play fair towards your human friends." Schnell said with a warm smile. "And your one faunus friend too." She added.
"Hold on a second." I stepped in with one problem. "I don't think I recall my team or Jaune's team packing up any swimwear. We didn't expect for a day at the beach from happening over here."
Wyvern lit up with an idea and smiled. "I can spare some swimming trunks for the two guys. For you ladies, I'm not sure exactly where to-"
"That's where I come in~!"
We turned over to see Charlotte as she walked down the stairs while still in her sleepwear while brushing her long hair. She looked at me with a smile and winked before continuing with her proposal.
"My wardrobe has just about enough options of swimsuits for you ladies to wear." Charlotte told us as she pointed back at the main palace's direction. "Whenever you girls are ready, let me know and we'll head over to the main palace to get you all dressed."
I bit my lip, not because this was very generous of her. But it only made me feel bad for using her things that don't belong to me. "Are you sure you're okay with that? You don't have to-"
"Nonsense. I don't want to exclude you girls from having a relaxing and fun time on our private beach! That'd be pretty selfish for a Queen." Charlotte chuckled sheepishly while looking away briefly. "So, what do you say?" She asked for my permission first.
"I suppose it wouldn't hurt, if you're okay with it." I smiled back warmly.
"More than it seems!" Charlotte smiled happily and bowed. "I have just the right kind of swimsuit for you, Ruby. Of course, you're free to look along my variety of sets when we get there."
With that level of excitement and smile shining out of her, I was a bit intimidated. But maybe I was overthinking it. Perhaps all that work as an Empress of an Empire could get on her shoulders enough where she wants to finally ease up occasionally. "How long has it been since you went to the beach?"
"One year, believe it or not." She answered, which was a surprise to hear.
"Oh my God…you poor woman…" Amelie gave a dry smile and shook her head.
"I know, I know." Charlotte giggled at Amelie's comment. "Come now. I'm sure you haven't been to one in a while too, correct?"
"I'm more of a lake person than a beach person, to be honest." Amelie shrugged. "But I suppose I can accompany you folks, if you'll have me."
"Of course! You may have been a former White Fang agent. But the information you provided through the years has helped us immensely. Think of all this as a repayment for your contribution." Charlotte said as she was willing to pardon even Amelie, which made me feel better as it assured Blake will be alright from them about her past.
"Can I get my repayment in Red Fins then?" Amelie asked eagerly as she was a fan of the most delectable, yet expensive fishes in the Drahënese market.
"Did you say Red Fins?!" Blake jumped into the conversation out of nowhere, still dressed in her pajamas; all because she hears about the luxurious fish.
Charlotte couldn't help but laugh as this bought both the feline girls' attentions. "Now, now. I'll be sure to make you wonderful ladies have a try of Red Fins. But first, I would like you both to allow me to pick your swimwear for the be-"
"DONE!" Amelie and Blake answered without hesitating.
"And that's all it took." I sighed while smiling a small bit. "So, where is this beach at?"
"Down beneath the mesa our Palace is on." Wyvern said as he opened the balcony door to point down over the railings.
I went over next to him to peek down and saw the white sandy beach below with some artificial rocks on the sides in order to create docks and maybe some protection from some harsh waves. Partly cloudy above with the air as fresh as it can be, it was perfect for a day to spend time outside. We were pretty high up, so I backed away from the railing and looked around before turning back to Wyvern.
"How do we get down there?" I asked. "We don't all have to jump…right?"
Wyvern chuckled. "Well, we never designed this entire place to have stairs or elevators outside. Since we zhulongs have wings. Soooooo…"
"Wyvy. Stop scaring her." Charlotte laughed as she stepped forward. "Don't worry, Ruby. There is an elevator in the center of the mesa, since the guards here need some way to go down there to patrol."
"I wasn't scared about that." I replied, somewhat truthfully, I'll admit. "Just wanted to make sure Jaune wouldn't have to worry about that. And the stuff we'll carry, of course."
"Well, ignore what I said just now. I was just pulling your leg." Wyvern said with a teasing smile. "Since my mom will be taking care of you ladies in the main palace, I'll have Gyo, Jaune, Ren, and my dad stay here since I have men's swimming shorts in my folly. While you're busy, we can handle bringing down and setting up the chairs and umbrellas."
"Need a hand too?" Schnell asked as she was already set with her swimwear. "I'm already all set, and you might need some extra hands with the rest."
"Sure. Why not?" He accepted her offer. "Ruby? Mind waking up your team and the other ladies soon before you head to the palace?"
I nodded and made a few stretches and yawned. "On it!"
-(Kumawaka Family Beach; Royal Palace, Northern Doraegon)-
Schnell whistled loudly and gave a thumbs up to our group. "Looking good, ladies~!"
Starting off with me (Ruby), I was wearing a crimson red colored swimsuit/skirtini that was outlined by carmine dark red fabric. An assortment of rose-like shapes were on both pieces. I just stood there, covering myself a bit while looking away as a sign that I wasn't used to wearing beach attire.
Weiss, the first thing to notice something different was that her ponytail was swept to her side, hanging on her front left shoulder. A lace-trimmed bikini that was obviously blended with the color of her hair, white, with the additions of sky-blue snowflakes and sparkles glittered from the sun.
Blake, similar to Weiss, had a black top with white laces along with a hairclip that represents a native flower from Kuo Kuana, holding up her bangs to give her a better field of view. A sarong covered a majority of her legs, with a curtain peek in the front of her light leg.
Yang had a yellow wrap top due to…reasons too "big" to explain…. As for what she wore in the bottom, it was an orange sports bikini bottom that was complimented with yellow flames, similar to her style. Even with a top not to somewhat skimpy compared to ours, my sister still looked like her body was showing off.
Nora wore a white bikini with carnation pink polka dots while also having white laces on the top and bottom, similar to Blake's. Pyrrha wore a skirtini like me, with the main colors of red and gold. Charlotte recommended to let her keep her tiara on her, since she says it matches.
Amelie wore a casual laced one-piece that had the colors white, purple, and grey. It was almost similar to a Victorian style dress, except it was in a swimwear form. As for Schnell, she had almost the same style as Amelie, except for the colors being sky blue and pale grey with some more skin being revealed. Her whole hair was now waving around freely from the breeze instead of a ponytail.
"Why did I have to wear something like this, when I'm not going anywhere near the water?" Amelie asked while staying under the shade from the underside of the hollow mesa, near the natural rocky pillars.
"Awww. The little kitten scared of a little water getting on her feet~?" Schnell teased.
"Nonsense! I'm more of that person to just sit on the beach and enjoy my surroundings. Maybe with a book or two…"
"You're sounding a lot like our friend here." I said while patting Blake's shoulder.
"What's wrong with reading a book on the beach?" Blake pouted at me.
"Nothing. I would almost do the same, but…Nora would've dragged me into the water." The voice of Ren said behind us before we turned around to see him carrying some umbrellas and towels. He was just wearing green swimming shorts with rash guard shorts underneath. His hair remained the same, which made me assume he wasn't much of a sun person as much as Nora, who was clearly the opposite.
Nora grinned and chuckled. "You're damn right I would~!" She said before starting to pose for him a bit. "How do I look?"
Ren scanned her and just gave a smile and said, "Looking good."
…
"That's all?" Nora pouted a little.
"Wait...why? What more is there to say?" He tilted his head cluelessly.
"Never mind." She glanced away disappointingly and went to one of the coolers to grab a can of soda.
I snickered and shook my head at him. "Hope you didn't ruin her day with that performance~."
"H-Hold on! What did I do?!" Ren asked, still confused.
"I think she wanted more compliments from you." Weiss finally stepped in to whisper it to him.
He blushed a bit and sighed. "You're talking as if compliments are easy to come up with on the top of your head."
"He makes a sound argument." Yang commented as I was immediately reminded of how we tried to have a conversation with Blake when we first met.
Schnell looked around and noticed something before asking, "Where's your Professor?"
Pyrrha pointed her thumb over at the closest rock pillar. "She's behind there. I think she's…pretty shy about wearing a swimsuit."
Schnell sighed and yelled out, "Goodwitch! Get your big butt over here! Was Charlotte's guidance to dressing up really that bad?"
"No! Not at all!" Professor Goodwitch replied while peeking out. "And don't you dare call my butt big!"
"Relax. I didn't mean it like that. Just get over here."
Reluctantly, Professor Goodwitch walked out from behind the rock support and walked over to us. She was wearing a black casual one-piece swimsuit with some cleavage showing off, while wearing a sunhat in order to protect her fair sensitive skin. She embarrassingly looked downward and away as a sign that she wasn't used to wearing something this revealing. Especially in front of some of her students.
"If I see you taking any pictures, Ms. Gozen." Professor Goodwitch glared at Schnell.
"Whoa there. Relax." Schnell shook her head to assure her that she had no intention of doing that. "I'll admit though. You're looking pretty good for your age."
"Thanks. I suppose." Professor Goodwitch shrugged her shoulders.
Weiss blushed a small bit and looked at herself for a bit. "Wyvern's mom sure loves to play dress up. But, I'll admit, she did a pretty good job setting all of this up for us."
Yang chortled and began to stretch. "Shame we couldn't find a top that could fit on me. But this will do good just nicely." She said while fixing her top wrap, resulting in some noticeable physics.
Another sound behind us was heard, which was Jaune as he was somewhat struggling, but enduring it to carry the rest of the umbrellas and towels. He carefully placed them on the sand and collapsed next to it. He was wearing blue swimming shorts that were trimmed with white lining. His hair style remained the same except he was wearing a sweatband. "I'm okay…" He panted. "Just give me a moment…"
Nora, holding an extra can of soda, went over to her team leader and handed one over. "Tired already? You only carried half of what Ren brung down here." She giggled.
"That was because Wyvern decided to carry more of what I was supposed to carry."
"He almost down here?"
"Yup. He's right there." Jaune told her while pointing at the central elevator, which just reached the bottom. When he walked out, carrying out the gear and heading towards them, he sighed in relief. "Okay. He got the rest of the stuff. Break time!" He said before popping his soda.
"Sorry for the wait. Just got the last of the umbrellas." Wyvern said as he struck one down on the sand to provide some shade. He wore only gray swimming shorts as the rest of his body was covered in tattoos as if he was already wearing a shirt. For the left eye, instead of a usual eyepatch, it was a tilted headband that had a better grip and coverage, since he was still a bit uncomfortable revealing it for safety reasons. Lastly, his bangs were tied up in order to give him a better field of view for his right eye.
Schnell chortled and nudged Yang teasingly. "Quite the body he has. Doesn't he~?"
Yang rolled her eyes and chuckled back sheepishly. "Well, yeah. But there's nothing much going on with that." She blushed a little after giving a quick glance before Wyvern could notice.
I smirked at my sister and asked, "Yang~? Do I sense that yo-"
"Nope!" Yang answered immediately as she rushed over to the cooler to look for a drink to act preoccupied. "Who's thirsty?"
"Definitely you, after looking at you know who!" Schnell furrowed her brows while pointing her thumb at Wyvern.
"What's going on?" Wyvern asked, looking back at us after finishing up with the umbrellas being set up next to the towels.
"Drink, Wyvern? Think fast!" Yang tried to divert the conversation in a different direction, throwing the can of soda at him.
Due to her throwing it like a baseball instead of tossing it properly, Wyvern ended up getting hit in the forehead. "Ow! You mind not throwing it like that if you're offering me one?" He sighed while picking up the can she threw.
Yang bit her lip and blushed even more, letting out a chuckle to hide her embarrassment. "Sorry."
"You okay, son?" Xavior, Wyvern's father, asked as he walked with Gyo with the grill and charcoal for barbequing
Wyvern nodded and rubbed the spot where he was hit before opening his soda can, sipping it. "All good. It's nothing." He answered and realized Gyo carried a lot of bags of charcoal. "A feast, it seems?"
"What can I say? Barbequing is a necessary activity at the beach, don't you agree?" Gyo chuckled.
"No doubt there."
Gyo had rash guard/surfing shorts on while remaining shirtless, showing off not only his tattoos, but also the scars and he received from both combat and some…accidents involving weapons testing with Wyvern according to those two. He didn't seem embarrassed about it as he didn't wear a surfing shirt if he wanted to.
For Xavior, Wyvern's father, he just wore the same kind of swimming shorts as Wyvern but with a different pattern of colors; being navy blue and electric turquoise lining and stripes. Out of all the guys here, he was clearly the most muscular, which wasn't a surprise due to his strength in combat and the size of his armor.
"Where's mom?" Wyvern asked before sipping his drink while looking around.
"She's finishing up with one more bag to bring down to the beach." Xavior answered while beginning to stretch his body and zhulong wings.
"How much you want to bet she's gonna look like a bombshell in her bikini?" Nora smirked.
"Well, with a chest size like that when we were dressing up, I wouldn't be surprised." Pyrrha bit her lip while looking down at her own, concerned.
Weiss curiously looked over at Pyrrha and asked, "Why? How big were they? I didn't get a chance to see her."
"You'll see soon enough." Was all she replied.
Schnell nudged Weiss and asked, "Scared that Wyvern's mom will be able to outmatch you with the size of your treasures?"
"Not at all! I'm not insecure with my boob size at all." Weiss said with confidence.
Famous last words before Charlotte dropped down and landed on her feet, with her wings spread as a sign she dropped all the way from the top. She wore an O-ring red bikini set with a piece of cloth wrapped around her waist. But her massive "assets" from both sections, especially up there, were clearly stuck out; with her swimwear being the only available to handle her size. Additionally, she also had with her a white sunhat and two anklets on her left ankle.
"Underneath all that…are you serious?" Weiss enviously glared, defeating her own statement earlier.
"Holy Hell…" Yang's jaw dropped as she even looked down at her own chest in shame.
Amelie looked at Wyvern and glared. "You better cover your eyes, buddy!"
"That's my mom! What the hell do you think I am?!" Wyvern said in disgust. "You should be saying that to those two!" He said while pointing over at Jaune and Ren, admittedly staring at his mom like the other girls.
Charlotte looked over at our group and revealed she held a small bag of kitchen ingredients for the food later. "We're going to be eating well for lunch! And dinner too!"
"That's a lot of ingredients, even for all of us." I smiled wryly due to the amount and asked, "Is there enough food for them to be used?"
"Zhulongs tend to eat an even bigger portion due to some obvious reasons." Gyo said vaguely as he was rather embarrassed to talk more about their kind's diet. "All you humans, and one faunus (Blake), will get to experience what it's like to have a Zhulong plate."
Ren tilted his head and guessed, "Maybe twice the size of a human portion?"
Gyo chuckled and shook his head. "You'll find out soon enough."
"Well, we do have some big eaters here. So, it shouldn't be a challenge." Jaune said while pointing at my team, Nora, Amelie, and Wyvern.
Weiss clicked her tongue. "I don't eat THAT much on my plate!"
"There's no shame in saying you eat a lot. Especially if you're a huntress-in-training." Yang pointed out with a smirk. "Take me, for example. All that muscle and other stuff for my body comes from somewhere."
"Other stuff? Like what?"
Hesitating, Yang shook it off and tried to dismiss it from Weiss due to earlier. "Nothing. So~! What should we do first?!" She asked to change the subject as she was clearly excited to jump into the water.
"How about some fishing?" Wyvern recommended, which only resulted Yang and Schnell giving him the stink eye. "What? Someone has gotta catch us some lunch for later."
"That's not necessary. I've taken the liberty of gathering enough food for a barbeque for everybody." Charlotte revealed that she was the one responsible for the cooler's preparation down here.
Gyo winked and gave a thumbs up to us. "And I got the fire." He said before blowing out an OUTRAGEOUS amount of fire out of his mouth towards an empty space, due to his Zhulong abilities.
The sight was pretty intense that it even got my sister shaken. "Just try not to burn the food, okay?" Yang said with a dry smile.
Xavior bit his lip and patted his wife's shoulder. "I don't know. Maybe a little bit more fish would be welcomed to our lunch. Especially for Blake." He said, pointing out that our feline teammate was fidgeting around excitedly.
Charlotte sighed and nudged his side with a smirk. "You just want to go fishing just like your son, don't you~?"
"I've been stuck with work and politics all week! At least let me do some of my hobbies!" He laughed.
"Alright, alright. Go on ahead. Catch a Red Fin, even better." Charlotte licked her lips at the thought.
"YOU HAVE RED FINS OVER HERE?!" Blake asked eagerly as she looked at the ocean, as if she was ready to fish even without the rod.
Yang grabbed Blake's shoulder and whistled. "Hold up there, kitten. Leave the fishing to the guys who know what they're doing." She chuckled. "In the meantime, what should we do?"
"How about before we take a dip…Volleyball time!" Schnell cheered with her zhulong wings spread out, raising the ball before smashing it upwards, only to land on Jaune's head and make him lose his balance near the waves as he already got soaked from it. "Oops. Sorry!"
"Without wings. That's a huge disadvantage for our humans and faunus friends." Gyo recommended as he was more of the man to play fair.
Schnell groaned and folded her wings back into her body. "Booooo. You're no fun at all."
"I assure you. You probably would've been aggravated if they used an advantage you were unable to face up against." Gyo rolled his eyes.
"He's right, sis. Don't play too roughly on their guests." Sybille's voice said from behind her, which made Schnell move out of the way.
"How long have you been there?" Schnell whistled, clearly startled.
Sybille was wearing a light blue casual off-shoulder one-piece swimsuit with her hair twisted into two braids, resting on her shoulders. A pair of sunglasses rested on top of her forehead as she was turned away from the sunlight at the moment. "Just got here after finishing up with Charlotte."
"You look amazing!" Jaune and Weiss exclaimed out upon laying their eyes on their idol.
Sybille blushed wildly as she wasn't used to getting compliments about her swimsuit. "Thank you so much."
"Jaune, Weiss, make a move on her, you'll be dealing with Schnell the hard way." Wyvern warned the two biggest fans of Sybille in order to contain them from any advances.
Weiss blushed and shook her head immediately saying, "I don't swing that way!"
"Just because you don't doesn't mean you can't be potentially considered dangerous." Schnell teased. "For Jaune, however…"
"Of course I won't do anything to her!" Jaune quickly responded after Weiss finished. "She's way out of my league!"
"Says the guy that tried to hit on Weiss before." I pointed it out with a smirk.
"That's because I didn't know who she was exactly!" Jaune said defensively.
Wyvern chuckled. "Suuuure. All that aside, you guys just going to play some volleyball while me and my old man start fishing?"
"You're not going to join in on a round, or set?" Gyo asked as he picked up the ball that Schnell accidentally hit Jaune with.
He sheepishly looked away for a bit and chuckled dryly. "I'm good at combat and all. But volleyball, for some reason, always has fate against me like soccer."
(A/N: Or "Football", for you Europeans reading)
"That's what makes it fun though." Schnell joked while catching it from Gyo, only for her to smack it up to have Wyvern have a chance to pass it back.
Wyvern did just that and smacked it up…only for his fist to redirect the ball to hit his face and have some of his soda spill, which admittedly made me laugh like the others. "See? Who will want me in their team if I suck at it this much?" He chuckled.
"Fair point. Let's play without him." Amelie smirked, playfully teasing him more.
"Hey!" Wyvern pouted. "No Red Fins for you then!"
As soon as Wyvern tossed it back to Schnell, he and Xavior went over to the piles of rocks in the corner that served as their fishing dock to the ocean. As for the rest of us, we all gathered around and were assigning each other into teams for the game of volleyball. I'm not really much of a sports girl myself, and I'm not so sure about the others. But Gyo and Schnell agreed to play fair and nice in order to get out heads and bodies to the game.
For now, ROUND 1!
Not too big of a fan on beaches. I'm more of that kind of guy that goes fishing. There, I said it.
