Hello, I was reading through this and again I found I had missed a chapter, and posted a chapter twice. It should be fixed now. Thank you all again for reading.
Chapter 49- Callie
To be honest I was a little nervous as we pulled down the driveway. Sofia in the back, looking around, she had opened up more once Arizona said she could come home with us, and was in awe at the old house and property. And when she saw the dogs running up to the truck, she was in heaven. "we run a kennel here, where we board and train dogs" I explain "these 3" I say scratching Pen's ears "are ours" I watch as Sofia sits down and Pen runs to her, licking her face.
"she's so soft" Sofia says
"she's still a pup" Arizona says walking around the truck, hearing the screen door slam I look over and see Alex coming out of the house, he stops when he notices Sofia, I shrug, he shakes his head and walks closer "brought home another stray?" I hear him say to Arizona. I look at her, and see her nod, and shrug. I knew she'd tell him later, when they were unloading the flooring. I decide to do the introductions "Sofia, this is Alex"
"Alex, Arizona's brother" she says standing up, brushing her hands on her pants and holding out her hand "I'm Sofia" I can see Alex is flabbergasted but he takes her hand and shakes it.
"Zo let's get this unloaded" he says going to the truck and hopping in, starting it and driving it to the barn. "don't mind him" Arizona says "he's always grumpy"
"he called you Zo" Sofia says looking at her
"that's what my family calls me"
"did you want me to call you Zo?" she asks
"you call me whatever you feel comfortable calling me" she smiles, Alex hollers at her from the barn, I see her shake her head "go, I'll show Sofia around"
"thanks" she smiles at me, giving me a kiss she ran off. Daniel then comes out of the kennel "Callie, do you know where Zo is?" he looks right at Sofia "hello" he smiles
"hi" she says holding out her hand "I'm Sofia, Callie and Arizona brought me here after Callie found me trying to sleep in an alley" Daniel looks up at me, I laugh and shrug. He shakes his head "well hello Sofia, I'm Daniel, Arizona's dad" he takes her hand and shakes it.
"Arizona and that grumpy guy are in the barn" Sofia says, I have to laugh at how forward she was being, almost like she belonged with us.
"thank you" he says and walks away shaking his head. I think I heard him laugh but I wasn't sure. "well grab your bag and come on" I say leading her into the house, where my mom was standing at the sink, and Aria at the table with the notebook we've been writing stuff for the wedding in. My mom turns and makes eye contact with Sofia, who stops in her place "come on don't be shy now"
"I, I'm not" she studders
"mom this is Sofia, Sofia this is my mom Lucia, and the lady at the table is my sister Aria"
"wow, everyone lives here?"
"for now" I shrug. My mom had decided that morning to start looking for her own place, once the divorce was final, and as far as I know Aria still lived in Miami, but she'll be here until after the wedding. "hello, Sofia" mom says "would you like a drink or something to eat"
"Callie and Arizona took me to lunch, but a drink would be good" Sofia says setting her bag down and joining Aria at the table, I was a little surprised Aria hadn't said anything yet. Sofia leaned over "what you looking at?"
"notes for Callie and Zo's wedding" Aria says, Sofia then looks up at me "I thought you said you were already married"
"I, I" I start to say, but Sofia cut in "you said she was your wife, wife means you are already married"
"she's smart" Aria laughs
"shut up" I laugh "Arizona and I are getting married in a few weeks, I just thought it was easier to say she was already my wife" I explain.
"oh, ok" Sofia says and looks down at the notebook "what does this mean" she asks pointing to something on the paper. My mom sets the drink she had gotten for Sofia on the table in front of her and pulls me outside "where did you find her?"
"huh?" I ask the screen door slamming scaring me a little.
"where did you find Sofia?"
"oh" I shake my head to clear it "Arizona saw her sitting in the alley next to the lawyers" I say "oh that reminds me he wants Aria to stop in" I say
"so she was just sitting in the alley?" I nod "where is she from?"
"my guess would be a foster home in Burnsville, she said she came from there"
"and her parents?"
"she doesn't know" I shrug
"hmm" mom says "maybe someone should call Teddy, see if anyone has reported her missing"
"good idea" I said pulling out my phone. Scrolling through my contacts, I had Teddy's personal number in there, I find the name and hit the button. "hey Teddy, it's Callie"
"hey, how's the wedding planning going?"
"good, Arizona and Alex are putting the finishing touches on the barn, we'll be good to go" I smile. "but that's not why I called"
"oh"
"Arizona and I were in town earlier and found a girl in the alley way by the lawyers office my mom uses"
"how old is the girl?"
"she says she's 13"
"I don't think there's anything out there for a 13-year-old, but I can check, do you mind if I swing over and have a chat with her?" I look up at my mom who can hear the conversation, she shrugs "sure, that might be best, I just want to make sure no one is looking for her"
"I get it" Teddy says "I'm at home, I'll swing over in a few, I'll make sure not to have my uniform on, don't want to scare her"
"sounds good Teddy, thank you" I say and we hang up. I let out a deep sigh and shake my head. "I just don't understand how a 13-year-old can make it from Burnsville to Owatonna alone"
"you ran a way once"
"yeah to gramma's, down the street, this is how many miles" I shake my head "someone has got to be looking for her"
"let's hope" mom says and goes back into the house, I shake my head and look down the driveway, Teddy was already on her way walking, with one of her dogs. I decided to wait and go in with her. Maybe Sofia won't get scared off, that's all we need. Teddy gets closer and her dog goes running off to find ours. "I didn't mean you had to come right away" I laugh as I step off the porch to meet her.
"I was out in the barn when you called" she shrugs "not doing anything" she laughs.
"well" I sigh "she's inside with my mom and Aria"
"and you don't know much about her?"
"no" I shake my head "pretty much what I already told you"
"ok" she nods and starts towards the door, I take a deep breath and follow her. Sofia is still sitting with Aria at the table. I clear my throat as Teddy and I enter the kitchen, and they both look up. "Sofia this is my friend Teddy"
"hello" Sofia smiles
"hi" Teddy says sitting down, Aria gives me a confused look as Teddy starts talking "I'm actually the county sheriff, do you know what that is?"
"a police officer?" Sofia says, I was a little surprised that she was making eye contact with Teddy, I see Teddy nod, "not just that, but I'm the boss"
"cool" Sofia says
"Sofia" Teddy says her voice soft "I'd like to ask you a few questions"
"ok" Sofia says still making eye contact with Teddy, she was a very polite girl, and it made me wonder why no one was looking for her. I hear her answer all of Teddy's questions, and my heart broke when I hear her say that her mom was dead, and she didn't know who or where her dad was. She was apparently staying with a family member, or something, but when they started ignoring her and using drugs, she ran away. "I really don't know where I was going, I made it this far with nothing, I thought maybe I could just keep going" Sofia shrugs "that was until" she looks up at me "Callie and Arizona made me get into their truck, I was cold, hungry and honestly tired of sleeping on the hard ground, so when they said I could stay with them" she shrugs again, looking me in the eye "if it's not ok, I can be on my way" she pushes back her chair.
"no" I say, she gives me a confused look "we wouldn't' have brought you here if it wasn't ok"
"there is plenty of room here" my mom adds "and even more when I leave" she adds with a smile.
"you're leaving?" Sofia asks looking at my mom
"just to town, I'm getting my own place"
"I thought you and Arizona's dad were" Sofia says
"no" mom shakes her head as Aria and I laugh
"I'm so confused" she shakes her head and looks back at Teddy "no one is looking for me, I promise you that, but I understand if you need to check" Teddy nods, and pulls out a small notebook out of her pocket, Sofia, the smart girl she is smiles and says "my name is Sofia Robin Grey, my birthday is May 8, 2010, my mom was Lexie Grey, and like I said I don't know who or where my dad is"
"and who were you staying with in" Teddy looks down "Burnsville"
"an aunt, but I don't think she was my real aunt, maybe an old friend of my moms" Sofia shrugs
"and the name?"
"aunt Sadie" Sofia shrugs "I'm not sure her last name, I wasn't ever told"
"hmm" Teddy hums, closing the notebook "that's probably all I need, I'll call it in when I get back home" she sits back in the chair, looking around "where's Zo?"
"probably still in the barn with Alex" I see Teddy nod and smile "Sofia do you like horses?" Sofia's face lit up, and Teddy knew she said the right thing. "I have some, at my house across the road, you wanna come and go for a ride?"
"can I?" she asks looking at me, I shrug, I wasn't sure why she was asking me, it's not like I was her mom, or even her guardian. "ok" I say, and see Teddy laugh.
"come on then" Teddy stands
"are you coming Callie?" Sofia asks, I look at Aria who nods for me to go.
"ok, let's go" I say with a smile, even though I was deathly afraid of horses. Teddy seemed a little shocked by my answer knowing I hated the animal but went with it. Once we got outside she whistled, and her dog, Ali, came running. Sofia reached down and she went to her right away, licking and rolling on the ground for some belly rubs "I love that you all have dogs"
"just wait, tomorrow the kennel will be full" I say looking around to see if Arizona would pop her head out of the barn, which she does and I make a motion as to tell her I'm going with Teddy. I see her nod, and blow me a kiss. I catch it and put it to my heart, I can see her laugh, and she goes back into the barn "you two are so corny" Teddy laughs.
"yeah" I laugh and follow as Teddy leads us down the drive.
