The fire crackled softly as the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow across the lake. Rachel sat with her knees drawn up to her chest, staring out at the water. Coconut dozed in a patch of sunlight nearby, oblivious to the tension lingering in the air.
Finn poked at the fire with a stick, his gaze darting to Rachel every few seconds. He hadn't said much since the kiss, but the unspoken weight of it hung heavily between them.
"So…" Rachel finally broke the silence, her voice tentative. "Are we going to talk about it?"
Finn froze mid-motion, the stick hovering above the flames. "Talk about what?" he asked, though the awkwardness in his tone made it clear he knew exactly what she meant.
Rachel turned to face him, raising an eyebrow. "Don't play dumb, Finn. The kiss."
Finn set the stick down, rubbing the back of his neck. "Right. The kiss."
They sat in silence for a moment, the crackling fire filling the space between them. Rachel's heart raced, but she forced herself to speak.
"Why did you do it?" she asked, her voice softer now.
Finn looked at her, his expression serious. "Because you were freaking out, and I didn't know how else to get you to calm down. I just… I wanted you to feel safe."
Rachel blinked, surprised by his honesty. "Oh."
"But," Finn added quickly, "it wasn't just about that. I mean… I wanted to kiss you. I've wanted to for a while."
Rachel's breath caught, her mind spinning. "You have?"
Finn nodded, his cheeks flushing slightly. "Yeah. You're… kind of amazing, Rachel. Even when you're bossy and drive me crazy, you're the reason we're still standing. You don't give up, even when things seem impossible. That's… pretty incredible."
Rachel stared at him, her heart pounding. She hadn't expected this—hadn't realized he'd been seeing her that way. "Finn, I…"
"It's okay," Finn said, cutting her off. "You don't have to say anything. I just thought you should know."
Rachel swallowed hard, trying to sort through the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside her. She looked away, her gaze falling on the lake. "It's not that I don't feel something," she said quietly. "I just… I wasn't expecting it."
Finn nodded, his voice gentle. "I get it. This whole thing—being here, trying to survive—it's a lot."
Rachel turned back to him, her eyes searching his. "It is. But… that doesn't mean I didn't feel something when you kissed me."
Finn's lips curved into a small smile. "Yeah?"
"Yeah," Rachel admitted, a faint blush coloring her cheeks. "I just need time to figure it out."
Finn leaned back, his grin softening into something warmer. "Take all the time you need, Berry. I'm not going anywhere."
Rachel smiled, a sense of relief washing over her. For the first time in weeks, the uncertainty of the island didn't feel so overwhelming. With Finn by her side, she felt like she could face whatever came next.
As the stars began to dot the sky, they sat together in companionable silence, the weight of the day lifting. Whatever this was between them, it was something new, something fragile—but it was also something real. And that was enough for now.
The sun was warm but gentle as Rachel and Finn decided to take a day to rest. The tension of surviving on the island had left them physically and emotionally drained, and after the failed attempt to flag down the plane, they both agreed they needed a break.
Coconut seemed to sense the shift in mood, leaping from tree to tree, his playful chittering breaking the quiet of the morning.
"Where do you want to go?" Finn asked as they strolled along the edge of the lake, the jungle's edge to their left and the shimmering water to their right.
"Nowhere in particular," Rachel said, smiling softly. "I just want to walk and… enjoy something for once."
Finn nodded, falling into step beside her. For a while, they walked in silence, the only sounds the crunch of their footsteps and the distant calls of jungle birds. It was peaceful, almost serene, a stark contrast to the usual chaos of survival.
As they rounded a bend in the lake, Finn's hand brushed against Rachel's. It was subtle, accidental, but it sent a jolt through both of them. Rachel glanced at him, her cheeks warming, but Finn didn't pull away. Instead, he reached out, his large hand gently enveloping hers.
Rachel hesitated for a moment before letting her fingers intertwine with his. The warmth of his hand was comforting, grounding, and for the first time in a long while, she felt truly safe.
Finn glanced down at her, a small, sheepish grin tugging at his lips. "This okay?"
Rachel smiled back, her voice soft. "Yeah. It's okay."
As they walked further, Rachel's sharp eyes caught sight of a cluster of large, heart-shaped leaves growing low to the ground near the base of a tree. Her steps slowed, curiosity tugging at her.
"Wait," she said, tugging Finn toward the plants. "This looks familiar."
Finn knelt beside her, his brow furrowed. "What is it?"
Rachel studied the plant, her fingers brushing over the broad leaves and thick stems. "It's kava," she said, excitement flickering in her voice. "My dads went on a trip to Fiji once, and they brought back kava powder. It's used to make a drink that helps you relax."
"Relax, huh?" Finn said, his interest piqued. "Think it's safe to use?"
Rachel nodded, inspecting the plant more closely. "It looks fresh, and the roots are the part you use. If we prepare it right, it should be fine."
They spent the next hour carefully harvesting the roots, Rachel explaining the process as they worked. "You grind the root into a paste, mix it with water, and strain it. It's not the best-tasting thing in the world, but it's worth it."
Back at their camp, Rachel used a piece of cloth to strain the paste into a small bowl of water. The liquid turned a cloudy beige, its earthy aroma filling the air.
Finn sat cross-legged by the fire, watching her with curiosity. "So this stuff just… makes you chill out?"
Rachel laughed, handing him the bowl. "Something like that. Here, you try it first."
Finn raised an eyebrow. "What if it tastes terrible?"
"It will," Rachel said, smirking. "But it works. Trust me."
Finn took a hesitant sip, his face scrunching as the bitter, peppery taste hit his tongue. "Ugh. You weren't kidding."
Rachel laughed, taking a sip herself. The familiar taste brought back memories of her dads' stories, and for a moment, she felt a pang of longing for home.
As the kava took effect, the tension in their bodies began to melt away. They sat side by side by the fire, their shoulders brushing, a calm silence settling over them.
"This is nice," Finn said, his voice low and content. "We should do this more often. Just… slow down."
Rachel nodded, her head resting lightly against his shoulder. "We should. It's easy to forget to breathe out here."
Finn glanced at her, his expression soft. "You know, for a day that started with us doing nothing, this might be my favorite one so far."
Rachel smiled, her fingers brushing lightly against his. "Mine too."
As the fire crackled and Coconut curled up beside them, Rachel and Finn let themselves relax for the first time since the crash. The island's mysteries and challenges would still be there tomorrow, but for now, they could rest.
