The Grimm horde surged relentlessly forward, a sea of blackened claws, gnashing fangs, and glowing eyes. Their monstrous howls echoed off the walls, amplifying the oppressive atmosphere that came with them. Jaune wasted no time. His heart pounded, but his resolve held firm as he launched himself into the fray. His sword, Crocea Mors in greatsword form, blazing with a pale gold aura with a hue of red.
The first wave of Grimm barely stood a chance. Each swing of Jaune's sword left deep, smoldering scars across the cavern floor, the beasts dissolving into black smoke as his blade carved through them. But the overwhelming numbers kept pressing, a tide threatening to drown them with a thousand cuts and bites.
At his side, Pyrrha moved with unparalleled grace and precision, as expected of a Champion. Her weapon, Milo, transformed seamlessly between spear and rifle as she flowed from one attack to the next. Each thrust of her spear was lethal, each rifle shot unerring in its aim. Her shield, Akoúo̱, spun like a deadly discus, careening through the air and slamming into a group of Creeps before rebounding back to her arm.
"Nora, right flank!" Jaune shouted, his voice cutting through the din of snarls and battle.
"You got it!" Nora replied with a wild grin. She leapt forward with Magnhild, her hammer, swinging in devastating arcs. A single blow pulverized a Grimm's skull, and she used the momentum to sweep the legs out from another before slamming her weapon down in a shockwave that staggered a cluster of foes.
Ren moved like a shadow across the room. His aura-infused palms struck with pinpoint accuracy, finding weak points and felling Grimm in a flurry of precise blows. His Stormflower pistols barked softly, each shot taking down its target with mechanical efficiency. He was a whirlwind of calm in the storm.
For every Grimm felled, it seemed two more took its place. The team fought valiantly, their teamwork honed already through countless battles, but the sheer weight of the horde pressed down on them, threatening to overwhelm their defenses.
"Pyrrha, behind you!" Jaune's sharp warning came just in time.
Pyrrha spun gracefully, Akoúo̱ raised to intercept a leaping Beowolf. The force of the impact sent her skidding back, but she recovered quickly, using the momentum to deflect another attack and her spear's recoil for a quick deadly thrust that stunned the Grimm. Before the Grimm could recover, Jaune surged forward, Crocea Mors cleaving the beast in two with a single swing.
"Thanks, partner," Pyrrha said, her voice calm yet tinged with gratitude despite the intensity of the battle.
"Anytime," Jaune replied, his eyes scanning the battlefield with laser focus. "Keep pushing! We can't let them pin us down."
The team's cohesion was their greatest weapon. They covered each other's blind spots with practiced ease, their individual strengths blending into an unstoppable force. Jaune's aura-infused strikes created openings that Pyrrha capitalized on. Nora's raw strength shattered enemy lines, and Ren's precise movements kept their flanks secure.
But as the battle raged, Jaune began to notice something unusual. The Grimm's movements were too deliberate, too coordinated. They weren't attacking mindlessly like usual. Instead, they seemed to be herding the team, cutting off escape routes and forcing them deeper into the cavern.
"They're not fighting us head-on," Jaune shouted, his voice edged with urgency. "They're trying to trap us!"
Pyrrha's emerald eyes narrowed as she parried a Creep's lunge and, slammed her heel on the creep, before thrusting her spear forward to dispose it. "What should we do?"
Jaune's mind raced, assessing their options even as he blocked a Mutated Beowolf's claws with his shield. The beast snarled, its green-glowing spikes pulsing ominously, but Jaune's counterstrike sent it crashing into a group of its kin.
"Nora, Ren, clear the left side!" Jaune commanded, his voice firm. "Pyrrha and I will push through the center. We need to break their formation before they box us in."
"On it!" Nora shouted, already charging with Magnhild raised high. She smashed into the Grimm with unrelenting force, her swings creating shockwaves that scattered the creatures like leaves in a storm. Ren was close behind, his movements fluid as he struck down the disoriented Grimm with a palm strike that left them imploding and shot.
Jaune and Pyrrha pressed forward, their backs to each other as they carved a path through the swarm. Crocea Mors and Milo glinted in the green light, their aura-infused strikes leaving trails of destruction. Every step was hard won, the Grimm pressing in from all sides, but the duo held their ground.
"Pyrrha, switch!" Jaune called, and without hesitation, they rotated, their weapons weaving a deadly dance that cut through the advancing Grimm. Pyrrha's spear pierced through multiple foes in a single thrust, while Jaune's greatsword cleaved through the horde with devastating crescent arcs of aura.
The tide of Grimm showed no signs of abating, and the oppressive weight of their numbers bore down on the team. But Team JNPR refused to falter. They fought with the unyielding determination of Huntsmen, their bond unshaken even in the face of overwhelming odds.
Amidst the chaos, a new sound emerged — a deep, guttural growl that reverberated through the cavern. The Grimm's movements faltered for a moment, and the team instinctively braced themselves. From the shadows emerged a hulking Mutated Alpha Beowolf, its glowing green spikes larger and more pronounced than any they had seen before. Its armored skull gleamed under the sickly green light, and its eyes burned with an unsettling intelligence.
The creature let out a bone-chilling howl, and the horde surged forward with renewed ferocity.
Jaune's grip on Crocea Mors tightened. "Stay focused! We've got this!"
The battle intensified as the team faced the unrelenting assault. The Mutated Beowolf watched from the shadows, its presence a sinister reminder of the corruption that had taken hold of the mountain.
Jaune's golden aura flared as he charged the beast, his greatsword glowing with energy. His strike met the creature's claws in a clash that sent shockwaves through the chamber. The Mutated Beowolf snarled, its strength rivaling Jaune's as they grappled for dominance.
"Nora, cover him!" Pyrrha shouted, her spear spinning in a deadly arc as she fought off a group of Creeps.
"I'm on it!" Nora leapt forward, Magnhild crashing down on the Beowolf's spiked back. The impact shattered several of its green crystals, causing it to roar in pain and turn its attention to her.
Jaune seized the opening, his sword slicing through the beast's exposed side. The creature howled, its movements growing more erratic as it fought to stay upright.
Ren and Pyrrha joined the assault, their combined attacks driving the Grimm back. The team's coordination was impeccable, their movements seamless as they worked together to bring down the monstrous foe.
With one final, thunderous strike, Jaune's greatsword cleaved through the Mutated Beowolf's skull, the beast collapsing in a heap of black smoke.
"This ends now!" His pale golden aura then began to glow brighter, intensifying until it seemed like the sun itself was contained within him. Jaune gritted his teeth. His muscles tensed as he drew all of his aura inward, coiling it within his core like a spring ready to snap. The sheer power radiating off him caused the ground beneath his feet to crack.
Jaune turned to his teammates, his determined gaze meeting each of theirs. Pyrrha, Nora, and Ren understood immediately. There was no need for words. This was trust, the kind forged in battles and shared hardships. They nodded, resolute, placing their faith in their leader.
Jaune released the pent-up energy in an explosion of radiant light, an aura shockwave tearing through the air with a deafening roar. The wave surged outward, an unstoppable force that slammed into the Grimm. The creatures didn't even have time to howl as the golden energy washed over them, their bodies disintegrating into black smoke in an instant.
The chamber grew eerily quiet for a brief moment, the only sound being the faint hum of Jaune's lingering aura.
As the shockwave subsided, Pyrrha, Nora, and Ren felt a strange sensation coursing through them. Their auras flared to life, brighter and stronger than before, the golden hue of Jaune's energy intertwining with their own. Their fatigue melted away, replaced by a sense of renewal and boundless strength. With their Semblances surged to dangerous levels, humming with barely contained energy.
Nora grinned wide, her eyes lighting up with exhilaration. "Oh, I feel amazing!" she exclaimed, twirling Magnhild with renewed fervor. Her hammer glowed faintly, as if absorbing the energy Jaune had unleashed.
Ren flexed his fingers, the aura coursing through his veins making his movements feel effortless. He holstered his pistols, opting instead for his bare hands. "It's like I'm supercharged," he muttered, his usually calm demeanor tinged with excitement.
Pyrrha simply nodded, but her emerald eyes glimmered with determination. She reached out with her Semblance, and the metal panels lining the walls and ceiling trembled, groaning as they tore free.
Jaune, still glowing with golden light, hefted Crocea Mors onto his shoulder. His voice was firm yet invigorated. "Let's finish this."
The Grimm surged again, their numbers seemingly endless. But Team JNPR was no longer on the defensive — they were a storm, a force of nature.
Nora leapt forward, swinging Magnhild down with a mighty roar. The ground quaked as the hammer struck, sending shockwaves rippling outward and pulverizing a massive cluster of Grimm. Their bodies disintegrated in an instant, leaving only black smoke in her wake. "Take that, you overgrown pests!" she shouted, spinning her hammer like a whirlwind to knock back another wave.
Ren dashed into the fray, his movements a blur. His aura-infused strikes were precise and devastating. A single palm strike sent a Beowolf hurtling into a group of Creeps, and a powerful kick shattered a Mutated Grimm's glowing spikes. Ren ducked under a swipe from a Grimm, countering with an upward strike that tore through its jaw. His movements were fluid, an unrelenting torrent of skill and power.
Meanwhile, Pyrrha took control of the battlefield in her own way. With a graceful gesture, she unleashed her Semblance, commanding the torn metal panels to form a deadly tornado. The spinning blades sliced through the Grimm without mercy, leaving a swath of destruction in their path. "We have them now!" Pyrrha declared, her voice steady as she directed the metal storm with precision. The Grimm's glowing eyes flickered and dimmed as they fell to her onslaught.
Jaune was at the center of it all, a beacon of light cutting through the darkness. His speed was unmatched as he darted between the Grimm, striking with devastating efficiency. His greatsword cleaved through dozens of foes with a single swing, its golden glow leaving trails of light in the air. A Beowolf lunged at him, only to be met with a crushing strike to the skull, splitting it in two. A Creep leapt from the side, but Jaune swatted it away with his shield, the force sending it crashing into the wall.
The horde pressed harder, but for every Grimm that surged forward, Team JNPR struck back with unrelenting ferocity.
The Mutated Grimm, with their jagged green spikes and glowing eyes, seemed more determined than ever. Their snarls filled the chamber, and they attacked with a ferocity that set them apart from the usual mindless beasts. But Jaune and his team were undeterred.
Nora smashed through a wall of Mutated Creeps, her laughter ringing through the battlefield. "You call this a horde? I've seen Ren take down more spiders in the dorm!"
Ren, focused and silent, moved alongside her, his strikes calculated. He leapt into the air, spinning as he delivered a powerful kick to a Mutated Beowolf's chest. The creature crumpled, its glowing spikes shattering like glass.
Pyrrha's storm of blades continued to wreak havoc, the metal slicing through even the most armored of Grimm. She fought with fury, her spear and shield moving in perfect harmony as she cut down anything that came too close.
Jaune's strikes were relentless, his golden aura blazing like a wildfire. He roared as he cleaved through a line of Mutated Beowolves, his greatsword glowing brighter with each strike. "Come on! Is that all you've got?" he challenged, his voice echoing through the cavern.
Despite their ferocity, the Grimm's numbers began to dwindle. The relentless onslaught slowed, the once-overwhelming horde reduced to scattered groups of Mutated Grimm. Black smoke filled the air.
As the final Grimm fell, Jaune lowered Crocea Mors, his aura dimming slightly as the immediate danger passed. He glanced at his team, their forms illuminated by the faint glow of their auras.
Nora twirled Magnhild triumphantly, a grin plastered across her face. "Well, that was fun and exhausting!"
Ren exhaled, his stance relaxing as he surveyed the battlefield. "They're getting smarter," he remarked. "These Mutated Grimm… they're not like the ones we've fought before truly."
Pyrrha nodded, her expression thoughtful. "We need to figure out where they're coming from. This can't be a coincidence."
Jaune's gaze hardened as he looked toward the far end of the chamber, where a chamber was.
"We're not done yet," he said, his voice steady. "Whatever's behind this… we're going to find it. And we're going to end it."
Team JNPR entered a massive laboratory. Jagged shards of glass lined the floor, the remnants of massive containment tubes scattered about the room. Each shattered vessel was enormous enough to house creatures far beyond the ordinary Grimm. The faint scent of chemicals and decay lingered, and the hum of machinery in the distance created an eerie backdrop.
At the center of the room, a massive Alpha Ursai stood. Its hulking form was grotesque, warped beyond recognition by glowing green spikes protruding from its back and shoulders. Veins of the same toxic green light pulsed through its fur, casting a sickly glow that illuminated the scars crisscrossing its body. The Grimm's low growl turned into a deafening roar as it locked its glowing green eyes onto the intruders.
Jaune stepped forward, Crocea Mors at the ready. He tilted his head slightly and glanced at his teammates, his tone steady and commanding. "Let's deal with this!"
Pyrrha was already moving, her shield Akoúo̱ raised as she sprinted beside Jaune. She ducked low, using her Semblance to hurl a piece of shattered glass embed with metal toward the Ursai's glowing eyes. The creature flinched, but before it could recover, Jaune's shield met its skull with a resounding clang. The force of the shield bash left the Ursai momentarily stunned, giving Pyrrha time to leap into position and slam her shield into its jaw with a satisfying crack.
Nora let out an exhilarated cry as she leapt forward. Her hammer, Magnhild, glowed faintly with her aura as she swung it with earth-shattering force, slamming the bone plating on the Ursai's head. The blow cracked the armor, sending jagged fractures through its surface.
Ren moved as well, aura-infused palms striking with deadly accuracy. He darted around the Grimm's massive claws and struck the weakened plating. The impact sent shockwaves through the creature's skull, leaving it reeling.
With the Ursai staggered, the four moved in perfect cohesion. Nora let out a rallying laugh. "Now for a Team JNPR Special!"
As one, they surged forward. Pyrrha and Jaune leapt high, their shields crashing into the Ursai's head, forcing it downward. Ren infused his fists with aura, delivering a bone-shattering uppercut. Nora followed, swinging Magnhild in a devastating arc.
The collective force of their strikes launched the Ursai's head upward, green spikes shattering as its skull caved in. The creature's roars turned into a guttural choke before its body slumped to the ground, disintegrating into a plume of black smoke.
Nora planted her hammer on the ground and grinned at the fading remains. "And that's a Team JNPR Special for you, monster!"
The silence that followed was shattered by a slow, deliberate clapping. The echo reverberated through the chamber, and the team turned to see an elderly man emerge behind a screen. His gray hair was disheveled, and his matching mustache and beard framed a face marked by claw scars. With his left eye, robotic and glowing red, scanned the room coldly. His right arm, also robotic, hummed faintly with power.
He wore a light gray jacket with a high collar and dark hexagonal patterns on the sleeves. Beneath it was a red shirt, barely visible under the lapels. His expression was one of amusement as he studied the team.
The man chuckled, the sound low and condescending. "Quite the show you've put on. Allow me to introduce myself. Doctor Merlot. Welcome to my humble laboratory."
Jaune tightened his grip on Crocea Mors, stepping protectively in front of his team. "Who are you, and why are you doing this?"
Merlot gave a small, dismissive wave, as if swatting away the question. "Ah, why does anyone pursue science? For understanding. For progress. The Grimm is a fascinating species, wouldn't you agree? Their raw aggression, their lack of sentience... They're the perfect vessel."
Pyrrha frowned, her shield raised defensively. "Perfect vessel for what?"
Merlot's robotic eye gleamed as his lips curled into a smirk. "For evolution, my dear. The Grimm are nature's ultimate weapon — unbridled, raw, unthinking. But what if they could think? What if we could guide their fury, refine their aggression, and make them allies instead of enemies?"
Nora's voice cut through the tense air, dripping with disbelief. "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard!"
Merlot didn't flinch. Instead, he spoke with the calm, measured tone of a man convinced of his righteousness. "You call it madness, but it's the pinnacle of science. You've seen the results of my work, haven't you? Those Mutated Grimm are my masterpiece."
Jaune stepped forward, his voice sharp with disagreement. "You're playing with fire. The Grimm isn't just mindless beasts. They're destruction incarnate. You think you can control that?"
Merlot chuckled again, the sound grating in its arrogance. "Control? No, young man. Cooperation. Partnership. And yes, I will succeed where others have failed."
Before Jaune could respond, a shrill alarm blared through the laboratory. Red lights bathed the room as a mechanical voice announced, "Self-destruct sequence initiated. T-minus five minutes."
Merlot tilted his head slightly, a small smile playing on his lips. "Ah, I would love to continue this enlightening discussion, but I'm afraid I must bid you farewell. Good luck, students. Do try to survive."
The screen with Merlot in it fizzled out, leaving the team in a state of shock.
Jaune recovered first. "Move! We're not dying here!"
The team sprinted through the tunnels as the walls began to tremble. Pipes burst, spewing steam and debris into their path. The distant rumble of explosions grew louder, shaking the very foundation of the facility.
"Duck!" Jaune shouted as a low-hanging pipe burst in front of them. The team dropped to the ground, sliding under the obstacle before scrambling back to their feet.
Ren's voice came through, strained but steady. "We're heading deeper into the mountain!"
Jaune gritted his teeth. "No choice. Just keep moving!"
They leapt over broken rail tracks, climbed over fallen beams, and pushed through clouds of smoke. The heat was suffocating, and the roar of the explosions was deafening.
Ahead, they saw a massive chasm with visible light far below. Jaune's mind raced as the ground beneath them cracked ominously.
"Pyrrha!" Jaune shouted, signaling her.
Pyrrha nodded, her eyes determined. She extended her hand, using her Semblance to manipulate the metal debris around them. The shards coalesced into a makeshift platform, bridging the chasm.
"Go, go, go!" Jaune ordered, ushering the team across.
One by one, they made the jump, the platform wobbling under their weight. Pyrrha was the last to cross, and as she landed, the platform collapsed behind her.
An explosion ripped through the tunnel above them, sending chunks of rock and metal raining down. Pyrrha raised her shield, deflecting the debris as Jaune grabbed her arm, pulling her forward.
"We're almost there!" Jaune shouted, spotting an opening ahead.
The team plunged through the final stretch, the walls collapsing behind them. With one final leap, they burst into a wide station platform, landing hard on the cracked tiles as a massive explosion consumed the tunnel they'd just escaped.
Jaune lay on his back, Crocea Mors still clutched tightly in his hand. He stared at the ceiling, the sounds of the explosion fading into the distance. Slowly, he sat up, his body aching but alive.
Nora was the first to speak, her voice breathless but triumphant. "Well... that was something."
Ren chuckled softly, sitting cross-legged as he caught his breath. "Something indeed."
Pyrrha leaned against the wall, her shield resting at her side. She looked at Jaune, a small smile of relief on her face. "We made it."
Jaune nodded, his gaze hardening as he thought of Merlot. "Yeah. I think so—-"
Suddenly, the distant, rhythmic clatter of a train echoed through the station cut Jaune off, catching Team JNPR's attention. Jaune, still on edge from their narrow escape, pushed himself up to his feet. His team followed suit, their gazes snapping toward the source of the sound.
"A train? Here?" Jaune muttered, his brows furrowing. His grip tightened on Crocea Mors as the noise grew louder, accompanied by the sound of distant combat.
In the faint light of the ruined station, they spotted a train barreling along the tracks. Atop one of its cars was a familiar figure wielding a bat-like weapon to launch what seems to be a dog to hit a stolen Paladin.
"Is that… Professor Oobleck?" Pyrrha asked, her tone equal parts disbelief and concern for the small creature he just batted to a robot.
Oobleck's distinctive rapid movements were unmistakable, but what caught their attention even more was the sight of Team RWBY sprinting toward the front of the train. Ruby's red cloak fluttered behind her like a banner.
Ren hesitated for a moment, his normally calm demeanor replaced with uncertainty. "Should we…?"
"Of course we should!" Nora exclaimed, already hefting Magnhild onto her shoulder, her eyes gleaming with determination.
Pyrrha adjusted her gauntlets. "They're our friends. We can't just stand here."
Ren let out a slow breath, nodding. Whatever fatigue he felt from their recent battle vanished as his resolve hardened. "No arguments here."
Jaune sighed heavily, running a hand through his messy blonde hair, streaked with a faint streak of white. The exhaustion of the day hadn't dulled his humor. "You know, I was kind of hoping for a relaxing field trip…"
Nora grinned, the ever-present sparkle of mischief lighting up her face. "It's kinda too late for that, fearless leader."
Ren, ever calm, adjusted Stormflower in his grip, his voice carrying a tinge of disappointment. "I was the same. I bought a lot of supplies to cook once we're done with the control centers."
"Really?" Pyrrha asked seriously, her usual composed tone tinged with a trace of curiosity.
Ren nodded solemnly. "I had a whole meal planned. Something hearty to celebrate a successful mission. Guess that's off the table now."
"We can still do that later, after this," Jaune gave a short laugh, shaking his head. "I don't think any of us expected this… train-sized detour." His eyes shifted to the roaring behemoth ahead.
Adjusting the greatsword form of Crocea Mors on his back, Jaune straightened his posture. The playful exchange between his teammates grounded him, but the urgency of the moment was impossible to ignore. "Alright, no time to dwell on it. Let's move!"
Without hesitation, Jaune broke into a sprint, leading the charge toward the train. Pyrrha, Ren, and Nora fell in behind him.
When they finally reached the train, Jaune didn't hesitate. With a powerful leap, he grabbed onto the rear car's railing and hauled himself up. The others followed, moving like a well-oiled machine. Pyrrha landed next to him gracefully, her shield already in hand, while Nora bounded up with a grin, hammer at the ready. Ren brought up the rear, calm and composed as always, his sharp eyes scanning their surroundings.
Before Jaune could call out to his team, a loud, rapid voice cut through the chaos.
"Ah! Team JNPR! Wonderful timing!"
They turned to see Professor Oobleck, clutching a small, wriggling corgi in one arm while expertly swinging his thermos-weapon in the other. He smacked a Palading Fang across the side, sending it tumbling off the train, exploding.
"Professor!" Jaune called, steadying himself against the swaying car. "What's going on here?"
Oobleck adjusted his glasses, his words spilling out in rapid-fire succession. "The White Fang! Yes, they've commandeered this train! Likely full of explosives, as they often are! Must reach the front, yes, stop it before catastrophe strikes! And—what, may I ask—are you doing here, hm?"
Jaune opened his mouth, hesitating slightly. "It's... a very long story."
Nora interjected, grinning broadly. "We kicked a lot of butts! Oh, and we met this Dr. Merlot guy. Total creep, by the way."
The mention of Merlot made Oobleck pause, his expression growing unusually serious. His robotic movements stilled for a moment as he looked at Jaune. "Merlot, you say? That name brings... troubling memories. But no time for that now! If you're here, you can help stop this train!"
Jaune nodded firmly. "We're on it. Pyrrha — sorry to ask, but I need to amp you to the max."
Pyrrha turned to him, her green eyes steady and resolute. "It's fine, Jaune. Let's do this."
Jaune placed a glowing hand on her bare shoulder, his aura flaring with pale gold energy as he poured strength into her. Pyrrha's body glowed briefly, the aura coursing through her like a surge of power. She gave him a small, confident smile as she stepped forward.
"Alright, Team JNPR," Jaune said, hefting Crocea Mors. "We're stopping this train. Let's move!"
