Chapter 14
The moment that they had both finally been waiting for – the building they had been traveling to for what seemed like forever stood high in front of them. Mouths open and necks craned, both Trainers who began their journeys in Pallet Town looked up in awe at the Gym. It was a round tower that was the color of the city it inhabited, and a large platform topped it off like a hat. Windows spiraled upward, decorating it in a way that made it more resemble a cake than a building.
"I've seen some Gyms in my days, but none like this," Gary observed with a smile.
"It's even better than I'd thought it'd be!" Ash added. "And I can't wait to meet the Gym Leader so we can have our battle! And I can win my first Johto League Badge! Well, let's go inside and get started."
Just then, a shadow darted past the sun hanging high in the sky, blocking out the sunlight in their vision for just a moment. That moment was enough to grab their attention, and they looked to the sky. The sun mostly darkened the figure, but it was soaring through the air with a large red and white wingspan. "It's a Pokémon!" Ash gasped.
"Wait, I don't think so, Ash," Gary pointed out. "It looks like a hang-glider!" As the darkened blot soared further away from the sun, Ash saw that Gary's deduction was correct. There was a young man just a few years older than Brock was holding on to the contraption, and though navy hair covered one of his eyes, he was looking down at them with the other. On his shoulder was a Hoothoot, and he soon leaned forward to swoop down towards them.
"It looks like he's coming in for a landing," Ash commented. And he was correct in saying so. The young man looked like an expert on it, moving so fluidly through the wind that he looked to be flying himself. Both boys stepped out of the way as the wheels of the glider patted on the concrete, and it slowly came to a stop in front of them. Pulling himself off the ground, he smiled at the pair while his Hoothoot balanced on his shoulder. "That was amazing! You really looked like you knew what you were doing!"
"I've been hang-gliding for years," the young man replied. "But I really started gliding because I thought it would help me to understand my Flying Pokémon better."
"Wow, that's a great idea!" the younger boy said. "I always wondered what it would have been like when I saw my Pidgeotto flying up in the sky."
"Oh, so you've have Flying Pokémon?"
"Yes, we both do," Ash answered, gesturing to Gary. "Pidgeotto was the first Pokémon I ever captured, and it's been one of my most hard-working Pokémon."
"I can tell from the way that you talk about it that you had a real bond with your Pidgeotto. If you ask me, there's only one thing better than watching a Flying Pokémon in the sky, and that is flying around in the sky with it. They are reliable, trustworthy, and very brave Pokémon."
"You must be a Flying Pokémon Trainer," Gary surmised, and the newcomer nodded.
"I am. Someday I want to be known as the best Flying-type Pokémon Trainer than ever lived."
"Then you must be the Gym Leader here at Violet City." The young man's visible eyebrow rose, and he chuckled.
"Yes, I am."
Meanwhile, Ash gasped. "Did you say Gym Leader?! Gary, how did you know?"
"I do my research, unlike you," his rival responded. "While you were stuffing your face, I was researching what type of Pokémon the Gym Leader uses."
Upon Gary's mentioning of research, the Gym Leader's face darkened slightly. "I suppose you've heard a lot of Trainers say that Flying Pokémon don't stand a chance against Electric Pokémon. It gets me so mad when people put down Flying Pokémon."
"Then you'll be happy to know I didn't bring any Electric Pokémon to battle you with," Gary smirked. "As a Flying-type Gym Leader, I guessed you had strategies to counter their biggest weakness."
"This is Gary, and my name is Ash," Ash introduced, holding out his hand.
"I'm Falkner; hi." The young Gym Leader shook Ash's hand, and then looked at Gary. "I recognize you: you were the winner of the Pokémon League at the Indigo Plateau."
"Yup." Gary's nose stuck in the air, and Ash's eyebrows came together with jealousy.
"Well, from the way that you speak, it sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders, and I look forward to our match."
They made their way into the Gym and past the lobby to an elevator. Falkner pressed the button and the doors opened up immediately. The three all trickled into the small space, and he hit the button labeled 'R'. Soon, the elevator hummed to life as it started to rise toward the sky.
Falkner adjusted the sky and navy blue robes that covered his body and looked at them both. "I'm gonna guess from the looks of you that both of you are looking to challenge me."
"Yes," Ash nodded.
"But I'll be going first," Gary spoke up, and Ash's head whipped around and he glared.
"Why do you get to go first?!"
"You heard him earlier, didn't you? He said he was looking forward to going up against me. It would be bad form to keep someone waiting."
Falkner looked between the pair and exchanged a chuckle with his Hoothoot. "You two seem to have a real rivalry. Very well, Gary. I'll battle you first." The elevator dinged as they reached their destination, and the doors opened and immediately, they were met with a gust of wind. "Well, this is it. Welcome to the Violet Gym." They all stepped out and walked forth onto the battlefield. It was on the roof, and the sides of the building looked down into the surrounding city. As Ash and Gary looked around in awe, others wearing white robes similar to Falkner's appeared through a stairwell off to the side and Falkner went over to speak with them. They talked for only a moment before Falkner took his side of the battlefield, and the others all stood behind him.
"That sure is a lot of people," Ash murmured as he and Gary walked over to the other side of the arena.
"It doesn't matter how many people he has behind him; I'm still going to win," the auburn-haired Trainer said. "Now why don't you go sit and watch how a real Trainer battles." Ash's lips pulled back from his teeth, and he glared at Gary before he spun on his heel and stomped over to the bench behind the challenger's box and sat down in a humph.
One of the white-robed boys with short brown hair stepped up between the arena. "The official Johto League battle between Gary, the challenger from Pallet Town, and Falkner, the Violet Gym Leader, will now begin. At stake is the Zephyr Badge. Each will use three Pokémon! Begin the match when ready."
"Ready," Gary spoke up.
"Then I am as well," Falkner replied, and turned to the Hoothoot on his shoulder. "Hoothoot, you know what to do."
"Hoo-hoooooo!" it chirped, and flew out onto the arena.
"I figured as much," the Pallet Town Trainer said, and took out his first Poké Ball. "Then I'll use... you!" He threw the ball, and it burst open, releasing Gary's own Hoothoot. The Pokémon hooted in a similar manner as Falkner's, and both Flying-types looked out at the other.
"Two Flying Pokémon battling head-to-head. This will certainly be a true-blue sky battle," Falkner stated with a smile.
"We haven't battled together much, Hoothoot, but I trust you'll do your best."
"Hoo!"
"Begin!" the referee called, and behind him, another student of the Gym hit a drum, and the hollow sound signified the start of the match.
"I'll let you make the first move, Gary."
"Thanks, but you'll come to regret that," Gary said with a smirk. "Hoothoot, use your Peck attack!" Hoothoot gave a throaty call and shot toward Falkner's Pokémon with its eyes locked on its target.
"Hoothoot, fly into the air and dodge it!" Falkner commanded. As fast as Gary's Hoothoot was, it was nothing compared to Falkner's, and it reacted to its Trainer's command instantly. As Hoothoot reached its opponent and reared its head back to drive its beak into it, Falkner's Pokémon flapped its wings, and had shot high into the air before Hoothoot knew what was going on.
"It's fast!" Ash exclaimed from the sidelines.
"Now descend and dive down into a Tackle attack!" The way that Falkner commanded his attacks was fierce and slightly intimidating, but his Hoothoot didn't hesitate at all. Tucking in its wings, it dove down at the other Hoothoot fast as could be.
"Hoothoot, fly up!" Gary called. Though he was trying to mimic the way that his opponent dodged his own attack, Hoothoot's speed wasn't quite up to par with Falkner's, and as it flapped its wings and flew higher into the air, Falkner's Owl Pokémon turned the direction of its wings, and like a hang-glider, skidded along the ground and plowed into Gary's Hoothoot.
"Hoo-hoo!" Gary's Pokémon cried as it spun backwards in the air.
"Don't let it get the chance to recover! Follow up with a Peck attack!" Falkner ordered hurriedly, and in a matter of moments, his Hoothoot had flown up to Gary's and began to jab at it with its beak. This forced Gary's Normal and Flying Pokémon to the ground, and it bounced off the stadium floor like a basketball, and managed to finally align itself before landing on its feet, but it stumbled around.
"Steady now, Hoothoot!" Gary encouraged, but Falkner was already up on his follow-up attack.
"Finish it, Hoothoot! Peck attack!"
"Hoooo!" his Pokémon hooted, and dove down once again and repeatedly jabbed its beak into the opposing Hoothoot's head. Hoothoot bounced off the ground once again and landed on its side, but this time it didn't get up.
"Hoothoot!" Gary cried.
"Gary's Hoothoot is unable to battle; Falkner's Hoothoot is the winner!"
"Poor Hoothoot..." Ash muttered. Despite Hoothoot pecking his head every time it came out of its Poké Ball, he still felt sorry by how quickly it got swept up by Falkner's Pokémon.
"Don't worry, Hoothoot – Falkner's Pokémon was at a much higher level," he assured it as he pulled it into its Poké Ball.
"If that's the best you've got, I'm gonna start to wonder if it was a fluke that you ended up winning the Indigo League," Falkner smirked with a hand on his hip. His Hoothoot fluttered and stood beside its Trainer, its eyes showing it was ready for its next battle.
"That was just a warm-up battle," Gary shot back, bringing out his next Poké Ball and bringing it to his lips. "This one won't be so easy to beat! I choose you, Arcanine!" The ball left Gary's fingertips, and in a matter of seconds, his reliable Fire-type Pokémon appeared with a howl. It landed on the floor with the wind from the sky running its fingers majestically through its fur.
With its opponent now in front of it, Hoothoot hopped forward onto the battlefield, standing with both legs planted firmly on the ground. "Begin!" the referee declared, and once again, the drum behind him was hit.
This time it was Falkner who decided to make the first move. "Attack Arcanine with your Peck attack, Hoothoot!" From how quickly he commanded, it was clear that Falkner was intimidated by Arcanine, and wanted to try and finish this round as quickly as possible. Hoothoot could sense this, and flapped its wings to hover off the ground, and then shot at Arcanine through the air.
Gary didn't respond, and both him and his Pokémon sat in silence as they waited for Hoothoot to close the distance between the pair. Both of their eyes were locked on Hoothoot, patiently waiting for their time to strike. Then, Gary's eyes flashed. "Arcanine, now!"
"Arroooo!" Arcanine cried out, and its eyes flashed as well. Throwing its head back it opened its mouth, and flames could already be seen flickering in the back of its throat.
"Fire Blast!" As soon as the words left Gary's lips, flames passed Arcanine's sharp teeth, and they quickly formed into the shape of a star, but it didn't soar for very long.
"Look out, Hoothoot!" Falkner yelled with panic in his voice and eyes. But because Gary and Arcanine had waited for the perfect opportunity to strike, the Fire attack made contact with the Flying Pokémon before it could fly out of the way. The attack exploded upon impact, and Falkner's cry could be barely heard over it. "Aack, Hoothoot!" The charred bird flew out of the smog and ash and landed on the ground with swirls in its red eyes.
"Arcanine is the winner!"
"Yes!" Even though Ash wasn't participating in the battle, he still cheered with a fist in the air. After all, it wasn't often he saw Gary battle against a Gym Leader, and as much as he hated to admit it, his rival was an excellent battler.
"That's enough, Hoothoot. Come back now," he said to his Pokémon, holding out its Poké Ball and pulling it inside.
"I wonder which Pokémon Falkner will use next..." Ash muttered under his breath as the Flying-type Gym Leader put away Hoothoot's Poké Ball.
Turning back to the battlefield, he smirked and replaced it with a new Poké Ball. "All right, time for a surprise!" He threw the Poké Ball forward and chuckled as it opened in the air. The light that poured out from inside it came together and formed into a three-headed bird Pokémon.
"It's a Dodrio!" Ash exclaimed.
"Unfortunately for you, none of my opponents have defeated Dodrio," Falkner told Gary, resting a hand on his hip. "Once they begin the battle, Trainers discover that three heads are much worse than one." His Dodrio let out a loud chirp in agreement.
"An interesting choice," Gary commented. "Especially since Dodrio can't fly." But his words made Falkner chuckle.
"If that's what you think, then you're wrong."
"You mean yours can?!" Ash exclaimed form the sidelines, and Gary's eyes widened. Falkner didn't bother to elaborate, and only left it to the referee to start the match.
"Begin!" he cried, and soon after, the drum behind him beat.
"We'll let him make the first move this time," Falkner told his Pokémon.
Gary didn't disagree with Falkner's choice, and looked at his Arcanine. "Arcanine, hit it with a Fire Blast!"
"Arrrrr!" Arcanine howled, and once again sent out a star-shaped blast of flames from its mouth out at Dodrio.
"Dodrio, fly away!" Falkner spat with a smirk. As the powerful Fire attack soared at it, Dodrio bent at the knees and leapt high into the air, jumping so high that both Gary and Ash had to crane their necks to look up at it.
"Nice move," Ash commented.
"So Dodrio jumps so high that it's almost like it can fly," Gary realized.
"Keep it up now, Dodrio! Use Drill Peck!" Dodrio's cry could barely be heard from the height it was at, but nevertheless it still came down toward Arcanine with its three sharp beaks spinning.
"Look out, Arcanine! Dodge it now!" Arcanine also bent at the knees, and its amber eyes locked directly on Dodrio. As Dodrio got closer, Arcanine jumped to the side, pushing off the stadium floor and moving safely out of the way as the Triple Bird Pokémon landed helplessly on the ground. Gary's calculating eyes watched the battlefield as he called for his next attack. "Arcanine, use Fire Spin!" Once again, Arcanine sent a stream of fire from its mouth at Dodrio, but this time the flames didn't form into anything, and instead hit the ground by Dodrio's feet. The six eyes all looked down as the red-yellow flames coiled around its feet, trapping movement in all directions instantly. Except for up, of course.
"Go Dodrio! Ascend again!" Falkner called, and Dodrio jumped high into the air once again. With no target, the Fire Spin attack billowed out, and embers were taken away by the brisk winds, but Gary didn't seem too disappointed about it. "That's it, Dodrio! Use your Fury Attack!" Dodrio cried out once again, and this time, it dove at Arcanine without its beaks spinning, but in the same manner as before.
This time, Gary was ready, and as soon as Dodrio began its descent, he waved his hand. "Arcanine, jump and use your Fire Blast right in the spot that Dodrio is going to land!" he instructed. Arcanine's massive paws jumped to the side and flames billowed from between its teeth, and Falkner gasped once he realized what was happening.
"Oh no! Dodrio can't change direction!" he cried with his eyes widening, and as Dodrio moved closer to the ground – eyes still locked on Arcanine – the Fire-type released its Fire Blast attack straight at the Normal and Flying Pokémon. The attack made contact with Dodrio seconds before the Triple Bird Pokémon was going to land, and it was swept up in the attack. When the flames cleared, Dodrio's feathers were burnt to a crisp and the Flying-type was lying on its side with no chance of getting up.
"Arcanine is the winner!" Falkner's referee announced, and Arcanine let out a small bark while Gary smirked.
A frown etched its way across Falkner's face, and he took out his Pokémon's Poké Ball. "That's okay. You showed plenty of spirit out there, Dodrio – you deserve a nice, long rest." A red beam shot out of the button on the face of the Poké Ball and pulled the Pokémon inside after converting it into energy.
"Now Falkner's down to his last Pokémon..." Ash muttered. "I wonder what it'll be." His answer was to be coming soon, as the Violet City Gym Leader retrieved his last choice from his robes.
"Pidgeot, go!" he declared. The ball opened and released a burst of light, and it condensed to form a large bird Pokémon with long yellow and red plumage trailing off the top of its head.
"Pijot-toh!" it squalled.
"It's a Pidgeot!" Ash cried, standing up in excitement at seeing the large bird Pokémon. He hadn't seen many Pidgeot in his time as a Trainer, but this was certainly one of the biggest ones he had ever seen.
Gary said nothing, and only took out his Pokédex and scanned the large Bird Pokémon. "Pidgeot, the Bird Pokémon. The evolved form of Pidgeotto. It can fly at twice the speed of sound at an altitude of nearly one mile."
"It may be fast, but let's see if it can keep up with you, Arcanine," Gary said to his Pokémon.
"Begin!"
"Arcanine, go in close! Use Take Down!" the Indigo League winner ordered, and immediately, his Pokémon bounded forward.
"Pidgeot, fly!" Falkner countered, and his Pokémon let out a short cry before opening its wings and beating them against the floor, sending it high into the air.
"We can still reach you at this height! Arcanine, jump!"
"Aroo!" Arcanine rushed forward to gain speed, and then leapt high into the air at the Normal and Flying-type.
"Pidgeot, Agility!" Seconds before Arcanine could make contact with it, Pidgeot disappeared in a blink of an eye, and reappeared some distance above, but by then, Arcanine had already missed its attack and came landing back on the ground. Gary's lips peeled back from his mouth and he pointed up at Pidgeot.
"Arcanine, Flamethrower!" he shouted. Whipping around and glaring at the sky, Arcanine sent forth a stream of fire from its mouth, but this too was dodged by the speedy Pidgeot. But Arcanine didn't let up, and shot a barrage of Flamethrowers, one after another. Three or four more and the Flying Pokémon was easily able to evade all of them, all by disappearing and reappearing in a different spot with its Agility. "No way!"
"Using its Agility, Pidgeot can reach speeds up to Mach 2," Falkner told his opponent with a superior smirk. "I suggest you give up before it's too late."
"Gary Oak doesn't give up!" Gary responded. "Arcanine, Fire Spin attack!"
"Pidgeot, Whirlwind attack!" Once again, Arcanine opened its mouth and sent out another stream of flames, but instead of dodging this one, Pidgeot opened its wings wide and soon began to flap them hard.
"Pijojojojojojojoh!" The flames stopped in midair and were quickly blown backwards. Arcanine flinched as the flames scorched its fur, but it was mostly flinching due to the fierce wind that was threatening to blow it away.
"Now Pidgeot, use your Wing Attack!" the Gym Leader commanded. Pidgeot tucked in its wings and swooped down at Arcanine, and the Fire-type Pokémon jumped to dodge. Unfortunately, Pidgeot was faster and easily changed its trajectory so it would swoop upward into Arcanine's jump. The Legendary Pokémon let out a yelp of pain as Pidgeot swept past it and sliced it with its wing. As it swooped back up and spun in the air, Arcanine fell to the ground.
"Arcanine!" Gary shouted. Hearing its Trainer's cry, Arcanine pulled itself up onto its feet and looked up at Pidgeot, but this didn't last long, and soon Arcanine fell to the floor.
"Pidgeot is the winner!" Gary grimaced as if the referee's words physically hurt him, and he took out Arcanine's Poké Ball and pulled his Pokémon back into it.
"Gary's down to his last Pokémon," Ash muttered. "This is a close one."
If Gary was worried, he certainly hid it well, and his face was cold as stone as he plucked his final choice of Pokémon from his belt and pressed the button to make it larger in his palm. All eyes were now on him as he threw his Poké Ball forward. "Nidoqueen!"
His final Pokémon was his trusted Nidoqueen, who appeared with a rhinoceros-like snarl and stomped on the stadium floor as it emerged from its Poké Ball. Across from it, Pidgeot landed on the ground and tucked in its wings, sizing up its opponent. "So, Nidoqueen is your last choice. Too bad this Pokémon is more grounded than the last."
"Begin!" the referee declared with a wave of his hand upward, and Falkner flew into action immediately.
"Pidgeot, use Quick Attack now!"
"Pijot-toh!" As soon as Pidgeot opened its wings, the speedy Flying Pokémon had made its way across the battlefield and plowed its beak directly into Nidoqueen's breastplate. The Poison and Ground Pokémon stumbled backwards and tried to strike out, but it simply hit at air, as Pidgeot was already airborne and far out of the Drill Pokémon's reach.
"Nidoqueen, let's hit it with all we can! Hyper Beam attack!" Gary commanded. Nidoqueen's navy blue eyes looked up at Pidgeot and it opened its mouth. Bright orange energy gathered between its powerful jaws, and an explosive blast of energy shot out in the form of an orange beam up at Pidgeot.
"Get out of the way Pidgeot!" Falkner exclaimed, a small amount of panic in his voice. Pidgeot tucked in one of its wings and soared to the right to avoid the blast, but Nidoqueen's sharp eye locked on the Bird Pokémon and it moved the beam accordingly. "Agility!" Seconds before the Hyper Beam could even singe one of Pidgeot's wing feathers, Pidgeot disappeared, and only reappeared some distance away when Nidoqueen's powerful attack ran out of energy and dissipated.
"Oh no!" Ash cried. His brown eyes were locked on Nidoqueen; the attack had left it exhausted.
"Swoop down and come in for another Quick Attack, Pidgeot!"
"Pijot!" The cry signaled it agreed with its Trainer's command, and Pidgeot shot down in a blur of raw speed. Before any of them knew it, Nidoqueen was stumbling backward as Pidgeot hit it again, and then stumbled the other way as the Bird Pokémon came back with a second strike.
"We've got to slow it down," Gary murmured. "Nidoqueen, Rock Smash!"
Nidoqueen had finally recovered from its Hyper Beam attack, and steadied itself using its tail. Pidgeot was up in the sky once again, and it bent down and struck the ground with its fist. A crack trailed across the arena from the point of impact, and rocks sprayed out from the ground up into the air, but with a flap of its wings, Pidgeot flew higher into the air and managed to avoid getting hit by any of the rocks at all. A snarl seem to settle at the edge of Gary's throat as Falkner countered with his next attack.
"Pidgeot, blow away Nidoqueen with your Whirlwind attack!" Once again, Pidgeot held its body high in the sky and flapped its wings at its opponent, resulting in a powerful rush of wind. Gary used his arm to block his eyes from any dust, but Nidoqueen was getting the majority of the attack. Despite its bulky body, the Drill Pokémon was being pushed backwards. "We've got them right where we want them, Pidgeot! Finish it off with Wing Attack, now!"
"Pijot!" the Bird Pokémon cried, and tucked in its wings and shot at Nidoqueen like a jet.
At this point, Nidoqueen had taken a good chunk of Pidgeot's attacks, and now that the wind had faded, it still held its arms up as it sat and waited for both Pidgeot to come down to it and for its Trainer's attack. "Not yet, Nidoqueen," Gary told it. It grunted and took a step back.
Suddenly, Pidgeot appeared in front of it, and it opened its wing to slice across its body, but Nidoqueen had adjusted to Pidgeot's speed, and both Trainer and Pokémon locked onto Pidgeot. "Nidoqueen, Mega Punch attack!" Nidoqueen's powerful fist struck forward with the force to break down a brick wall, and Pidgeot was too close to dodge it. The fist made contact with Pidgeot's face, and the combination of the power on Nidoqueen's side, and the speed on Pidgeot's side resulted in a damaging blow. Pidgeot crumpled in the air, and if it was an old cartoon, there was no doubt that it would have turned into a tin can. But instead, the Bird Pokémon fell to the ground by Nidoqueen.
"Pidgeot, no!" Falkner cried in horror.
Behind him, his students began to chant. "Pidgeot get up! Pidgeot get up! Pidgeot get up!" The chanting seemed to encourage it to stand, but it only managed to pull its head up before collapsing fully.
"Are you okay?" Falkner asked with worry filling his face as he rushed up to his ace Pokémon.
"And the challenger, Gary Oak from Pallet Town, is the winner!" the referee announced, and Gary smiled and was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.

The sun was a bright ball of pink as it descended closer to the buildings touching the Violet City sky. They were standing out front of the Gym, with Ash and Gary on one side and Falkner and all his students on the other. "Using Nidoqueen's high defense and Pidgeot's speed to your advantage was a very smart move," Falkner complimented Gary. "You certainly lived up to your expectation in my book." The Flying-type Gym Leader stepped forward and reached into the chest of his robe before pulling something silver out and holding his hand forward with the palm facing up. "You definitely earned the Zephyr Badge."
"Thanks," Gary thanked, plucking the Badge from the young Gym Leader's hand. Ash admired it with wide eyes as his rival held it between his thumb and index finger. It resembled an upside-down 'U', but the ends were decorated similar to wings.
Falkner stepped back and turned to Ash. "Ash, I understand that you are looking for a Gym Battle as well, but my Pokémon are exhausted and could use a good rest. Please come back tomorrow, and we will have our match then." Slightly disappointed but trying not to show it, Ash only smiled and nodded at Falkner.
"Sure. And you better have one of those Zephyr Badges with my name on it, because there's no way I'm going to lose!"
"I look forward to our match very much."
